RESUMEN

Oroxylum indicum(Linn.) Vent , the plant used in this study is one among the group of ten drugs named Dasamoola, widely used in Ayurvedic system of medicine. The officinal part of this plant, the root bark is often adulterated with the stem of the plant. Hence this comparative study of root and stem of this plant becomes highly significant. The Physico-chemical parameters, Thin Layer Chromatography and High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography studies of stem and root were carried out in this study separately. The TLC studies of three different fractions were isolated - (1) Lipids, fats and waxes (2) Glycosides, Terpenoids and Phenols (3) Alkaloids TLC studies showed that the phytochemicals isolated from root and stem separately are different from each other, thus helping to distinguish the part used. The review of Ayurvedic classical literature also reveals that the therapeutic actions of stem and root are different. The antibacterial activity of alcoholic extracts of stem and root were carried out separately using agar well diffusion method and found that the stem extract has more antibacterial activity especially against organisms causing diarrhea than root extract. This further validates therapeutic indications mentioned in Ayurveda.

RESUMEN

Argwadhadhi Kwatham is a compound preparation of 3 single drugs viz cassia fistula L. Azadirachta indica A., Tinospora cordifolia L. Literature survey show tat all3 ingredients are very effective for skin diseases. Kahayams prepared individually with these 3 drugs was found to be more effective for skin dideases. This paper deals with a comparative study of the chemical constituents present in aragwadhadhi kwatham and the individual kwathams, all the four kwarham were chemically analysed T.L.C. studies were mainly used for the comparative studies.

RESUMEN

This paper deals with the standardisation of Eladhi choornam . It is a compound preparation of 6 ingredients along with sugar, viz 1. Nagakesara, 2. Maricham, 3. Twak, 4. Ela, 5. Sunti, 6. Pippali. Chromatographic technique was used for the detection of the ingredients. Different solvent systems were developed for each ingredients and spots were visualized in Iodine vapours. Presence of spots with identical Rf values in the single drugs and finished product indicate the presence of the single drugs in the finished product the parameters evolved in this stud can be considered viable for this preparation.

RESUMEN

Standardisation of Ayurvedic medicines has become necessary to keep up their therapeutic efficacy. This paper deals with the standardization of Thaleesapatradi Choornam, a compound preparation of six drugs along with sugar. Chromatographic technique was used for the detection of the ingredients. Different solvent systems were developed for each ingredient, and spots obtained were visualized in iodine vapours. The presence of spots with identical value in the single drug and finished product indicate the presence of constituents of single drugs in finished product which in turn conforms its presence. These parameters can be considered viable for this preparation.

RESUMEN

Standardization of ayurvedic drugs has become necessary as in all other walks of life. This paper deals with the detection of Acorus calamus in Ayurvedic preparations. It is one of the most commonly used ingredients in ayurvedic preparations. This layer chromatographic technique was used for detection. Two solvent systems were developed and the spots were visualized in iodine vapour. The spot of Rf 0.85 in I and 0.70 in (ii) obtained for Acorus calamus was present in all the finished products, taken thus showing the present of Acorus calamus in the finished products. Co. T.L.C. was done to confirm the observation. This was further confirmed by testing o market samples containing Acorus calamus.

RESUMEN

Methods were evolved for the detection of Curcuma longa in ayurvedic preparations. A simple method was also found out for the estimation of Curcuma longa in Vachalasunyadhi Taila using the formula -a = b/.32. Where a is the actual weight of Curcuma longa in Vilupatra Tailam and b is the weight obtained from graph of concentration of Curcuma longa VS OD. The methods evolved are so simple that it does not require any sophisticated instruments and hence it can be carried out in any quality control lab.
