RESUMEN

We examined the effect of hydrogen on the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes in the aerosol (a specific case of the floating catalyst) chemical vapor deposition process using ethylene as a carbon source and ferrocene as a precursor for a Fe-based catalyst. With a comprehensive set of physical methods (UV-vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopies, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential mobility analysis, and four-probe sheet resistance measurements), we showed hydrogen to inhibit ethylene pyrolysis extending the window of synthesis parameters. Moreover, the detailed study at different temperatures allowed us to distinguish three different regimes for the hydrogen effect: pyrolysis suppression at low concentrations (I) followed by surface cleaning/activation promotion (II), and surface blockage/nanotube etching (III) at the highest concentrations. We believe that such a detailed study will help to reveal the complex role of hydrogen and contribute toward the synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes with detailed characteristics.

RESUMEN

We assess bithiophene (C8H6S2) as a novel sulfur-based promotor for the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in the aerosol (floating catalyst) CVD method. Technologically suitable equilibrium vapor pressure and an excess of hydrocarbon residuals formed under its decomposition make bithiophene an attractive promoter for the production of carbon nanotubes in general and specifically for ferrocene-based SWCNT growth. Indeed, we detect a moderate enhancement in the carbon nanotube yield and a decrease in the equivalent sheet resistance of the films at a low bithiophene content, indicating the improvement of the product properties. Moreover, the relatively high concentrations and low temperature stability of bithiophene result in non-catalytical decomposition, leading to the formation of pyrolytic carbon deposits; the deposits appear as few-layer graphene structures. Thus, bithiophene pyrolysis opens a route for the cheap production of hierarchical composite thin films comprising carbon nanotubes and few-layer graphene, which might be of practical use for hierarchical adsorbents, protective membranes, or electrocatalysis.

RESUMEN

The films of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are a promising material for flexible transparent electrodes, which performance depends not only on the properties of individual nanotubes but also, foremost, on bundling of individual nanotubes. This work investigates the impact of densification on optical and electronic properties of SWCNT bundles and fabricated films. Our ab initio analysis shows that the optimally densified bundles, consisting of a mixture of quasi-metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs, demonstrate quasi-metallic behavior and can be considered as an effective conducting medium. Our density functional theory calculations indicate the band curving and bandgap narrowing with the reduction of the distance between nanotubes inside bundles. Simulation results are consistent with the observed conductivity improvement and shift of the absorption peaks in SWCNT films densified in isopropyl alcohol. Therefore, not only individual nanotubes but also the bundles should be considered as building blocks for high-performance transparent conductive SWCNT-based films.

RESUMEN

Carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles (Fe@C) with a mean diameter of 15 nm have been synthesized using evaporation-condensation flow-levitation method by the direct iron-carbon gas-phase reaction at high temperatures. Further, Fe@C were stabilized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) coating, and their electromagnetic properties were evaluated to test their performance in magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT) through a specific absorption rate (SAR). Heat generation was observed at different Fe@C concentrations (1, 2.5, and 5 mg/mL) when applied 331 kHz and 60 kA/m of an alternating magnetic field, resulting in SAR values of 437.64, 129.36, and 50.4 W/g for each concentration, respectively. Having such high SAR values at low concentrations, obtained material is ideal for use in MHT.

RESUMEN

Chronic liver injury leads to advanced fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Genetical cell treatment related to the use of adenovirus (Ads) has proven to be beneficial and efficient in the recovery of hepatic diseases. Nevertheless, they are highly immunogenic and trigger an immune response where interferons type 1 (IFN-I) play a very important role. Three shRNAs against the Interferon-1 receptor (IFNAR1) were designed and cloned in pENTR/U6 plasmid and amplified in DH5α cells. Huh7 cells were transfected with these plasmids in the presence or absence of 1 × 109 viral particles/ml of adenovirus containing the green fluorescent protein gene used as a reporter. Transfection with the shRNA plasmids partially inhibited the IFNAR1 expression. This inhibition substantially decreased antiviral response, demonstrated by the decrease of IFNAR1, IFN-α, and TNF-α gene expression, and the decrease at protein levels of IFNAR1, Protein kinase RNA-activated (PKR), and phosphorylated STAT1, allowing higher adenoviral transduction and transgene expression. Interestingly it was seen shRNA inhibited macrophage activation. These results suggest that the inhibition of the IFN-I pathway could be a strategy to minimize the immune response against Adenoviral vectors allowing higher Adenovirus transduction extending the transgene expression.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Variants of 8q24 locus have been associated with prostate cancer (PCa) susceptibility. This study aims to analyze the genetic basis of PCa susceptibility in Mexican men by analyzing SNPs in the 8q24 locus for the first time. METHODS: A case-control study was performed in 875 men recruited from the Mexican Social Security Institute, 326 patients with PCa, and 549 non-PCa patients (88 with benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH and 461 healthy controls). The 8q24 locus SNPs: rs16901979, rs16983267, rs1447295, and rs7837328 were genotyped by allelic discrimination assays using TaqMan probes. Statistical analysis was performed using Epi Info statistical 7.0 and SNPstats softwares. RESULTS: All genotype frequencies were in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium. No differences were observed in genotype distribution between PCa and non-PCa patients for rs6983267. Under different inheritance models, the rs16901979, rs1447295, and rs7837328 SNPs were associated with PCa (OR = 2.8, 1.8, and 1.72, respectively; Pc < 0.001) when comparing PCa patients against controls. This association remains between PCa and BPH patients under different models (OR = 8.5, 2.2, and 1.9, respectively; Pc < 0.001). There were no significant differences in allele and genotype distribution among BPH patients and controls. The combined effect of the alleles CGAA for the SNPs rs16901979, rs6983267, rs1447295, and rs7837328 showed significant differences between PCa patients and controls (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.48-5.83, Pc = 0.008). Four 8q24 variants were not associated with D'Amico score, age at diagnosis, and bone metastases. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides the first confirmation that variants rs16901979, rs1447295, and 7837328 at 8q24 locus are associated with PCa susceptibility in Mexican men.

RESUMEN

Bovine lameness has relatively large negative economic and welfare implications on the U.S. dairy industry. Due to the ramifications, early lameness detection will aid in assisting dairy producers to mitigate downstream effects through early treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the minimum standing time required among 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 10 min time intervals to obtain an accurate weight distribution estimate for each leg when attempting to detect lameness. An embedded microcomputer-based force plate system was developed to measure vertical forces from individual cow limb weight distribution to detect bovine lameness when utilizing an induced synovitis lameness model. The force plate has four quadrants, with each load cell quadrant measuring the force placed on it from a single limb. The force plate recorded weight (kg) every second from each load cell quadrant, after which, a 60 s moving average for weight distribution was calculated. A sequential study design was employed to evaluate non-lame and induced lameness to ensure time requirements were consistent. Prior to induction, the force plate system was used to measure weight distribution every second for 15 min. After lameness induction, additional 15 min increments were recorded every 24 h for seven days. Lameness was induced by injecting the left hind distal interphalangeal joint in three cows with amphotericin B, 12 h prior to the start of the study. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed effect that included the fixed effects of day relative to lameness induction, time period, foot and injected foot. Cow within replicate was included as a random effect. Cumulative minutes were assessed up to 15 min by comparing the least square rolling 60 s cumulative means expressed as a percentage of each animal's BW percentage placed on each leg for 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 10 min intervals. Results indicate that the minimum time needed for accurate lameness detection in cows was 2 min.

Aim: To describe demographic characteristics and surgical treatment carried out on patients with a sternal fracture (SF) in the last 5 years. Materials and Method: Retrospective descriptive study of patients operated on for SF between January 2015 and January 2020. We analyzed age, sex, morbid history, hemodynamics on admission, causal mechanism and characteristics of sternal injury, associated injuries, surgical indication and complications. Results: During the period, 9 patients were admitted to our hospital (7 men) from 21 to 91 years old. All were operated. Most were admitted with stable hemodynamics. The mechanism was always traumatic. The surgical indications were: intractable pain, alteration of ventilatory mechanics, flail chest, deformity and aid in the rehabilitation of spinal cord trauma. Discussion: SF is an infrequent pathology, its surgical resolution reported worldwide being even scarce. Conclusions: We present the first report of a series of cases of SF operated in Chile. Sternal osteosynthesis allows the management of EF with good functional results with a low morbidity rate. The results obtained are comparable to those observed in the international literature.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of protease inhibitor (PI)-based dual therapy on CD4/CD8 ratio during the first year of therapy in antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve patients using data from randomized controlled clinical trials. METHODS: We pooled data from the GARDEL and ANDES studies, both randomized controlled clinical trials that recruited ART-naïve people living with HIV and randomly assigned them to receive PI-based dual therapy (DT) or triple therapy (TT) aiming to compare viral efficacy. We compared median CD4/CD8 ratios and the proportion of patients with CD4/CD8 ratio > 1 at 48 weeks after ART initiation in both treatment arms using the Mann-Whitney U-test and the χ2 test. We performed subgroup analysis for patients > 50 years old, with baseline CD4 counts ≤ 200 cells/µL, viral load > 100 000 HIV RNA copies/mL, and ritonavir-boosted lopinavir-based therapy. RESULTS: We analysed data from 571 patients: 292 on DT and 279 on TT. No differences were observed in CD4/CD8 ratio (0.632 vs. 0.617, P = 0.729) or in the proportion of patients with CD4/CD8 ratio > 1 (17.9% vs. 19.3%, P = 0.678) 48 weeks after ART initiation. Subgroup analysis showed no further differences. CONCLUSION: The impact of PI-based DT regimens on the CD4/CD8 ratio during the first year of treatment for ART-naïve patients is similar to that of TT.

RESUMEN

Immune checkpoint therapy to reverse natural killer (NK) and T cell exhaustion has emerged as a promising treatment in various cancers. While anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) pembrolizumab has recently gained Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer, other checkpoint molecules, such as T cell immunoreceptor with immunoglobulin (Ig) and immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibition motif (ITIM) domains (TIGIT) and T cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (Tim-3), have yet to be fully explored in this disease. We report expression of TIGIT, Tim-3 and PD-1 on subsets of peripheral blood NK (CD56dim/neg CD16bright/dim/neg and CD56bright CD16dim/neg ) and T cells. The percentages of these cells were increased in women with cervical cancer and pre-malignant lesions. PD-1+ NK and T cells were likely to co-express TIGIT and/or Tim-3. These cells, with an apparently 'exhausted' phenotype, were augmented in patients. A subset of cells were also natural killer group 2 member D (NKG2D)- and DNAX accessory molecule 1 (DNAM-1)-positive. PD-1int and PD-1high T cells were notably increased in cervical cancer. Soluble programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) was higher in cancer patient blood versus healthy donors and we observed a positive correlation between sPD-L1 and PD-1+ T cells in women with low-grade lesions. Within the cancer group, there were no significant correlations between sPD-L1 levels and cervical cancer stage. However, when comparing cancer versus healthy donors, we observed an inverse association between sPD-L1 and total T cells and a correlation between sPD-L1 and CD56dim NK cells. Our results may show an overview of the immune response towards pre-cancerous lesions and cervical cancer, perhaps giving an early clue as to whom to administer blocking therapies. The increase of multiple checkpoint markers may aid in identifying patients uniquely responsive to combined antibody therapies.

RESUMEN

We present an experimental analysis of the pulse profile variability within the mode-locked regions of an erbium-doped figure-eight fiber laser (EDFEFL). The tuning of the mode-locked regions was carried out by varying and recording the values of the angle of the polarization controllers in the ring section and in the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). Within the mode-locked regions, we obtained a large variability of the temporal profile, specifically amplitude and width of the noise-like pulses (NLPs). Subsequently, we recorded and studied the changes in the spectral domain. We identified the mode-locked regions where the temporal profile of the pulse remains constant (stationary state), and where it expels sub-packets (non-stationary state). Finally, a theoretical analysis of the power transmission through the polarizing in the ring section and in the NOLM switching characteristic as a function of wave plate angles is also performed, which allows an understanding of the existence of the multiple mode-locked regions and pulse profile adjustability. We analyze NLPs with a carrier wavelength of 1560 nm with duration of the order of nanoseconds and a repetition rate of 0.9 MHz.

RESUMEN

Because of the high frequency of late presentation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease in our population, we decided to explore the presence of myocarditis among people with HIV infection and advanced immunosuppression (less than 200 CD4+ cells/µL) and to describe the inflammatory changes observed after combined antiretroviral therapy initiation in an observational, longitudinal, prospective cohort. We performed both cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging and doppler transthoracic echocardiogram.

RESUMEN

Since the discovery of leptin in 1994, the adipose tissue (AT) is not just considered a passive fat storage organ but also an extremely active secretory and endocrine organ that secretes a large variety of hormones, called adipokines, involved in energy metabolism. Adipokines may not only contribute to AT dysfunction and obesity, but also in fat browning, a process that induces a phenotypic switch from energy-storing white adipocytes to thermogenic brown fat-like cells. The fat browning process and, consequently, thermogenesis can also be stimulated by physical exercise. Contracting skeletal muscle is a metabolically active tissue that participates in several endocrine functions through the production of bioactive factors, collectively termed myokines, proposed as the mediators of physical activity-induced health benefits. Myokines affect muscle mass, have profound effects on glucose and lipid metabolism, and promote browning and thermogenesis of white AT in an endocrine and/or paracrine manner. The present review focuses on the role of different myokines and adipokines in the regulation of fat browning, as well as in the potential cross-talk between AT and skeletal muscle, in order to control body weight, energy expenditure and thermogenesis.

RESUMEN

We report an experimental study of passive harmonic mode-locking in an all-fiber switchable dual-wavelength Er/Yb double-clad laser. The proposed scheme supports single- and dual-wavelength operation of mode-locked pulses with rectangular, h-like and trapezoidal shapes in a noise-like pulse regime. Single-wavelength emissions at λ1 = 1545.1 and λ2 = 1563.6 nm were obtained for pump power values of 9.42 and 6.31 W, achieving pulse durations of up to 18 and 11.8 ns, respectively. At an intermediary pump power of 7.5 W, dual-wavelength emission is obtained and pulses of around 3.59 ns are generated. Additionally, the transition dynamics until 4th-order harmonic mode-locking is also observed. Different laser operation regimes of fundamental and different orders of harmonic mode-locking, with rectangular, h-shaped or trapezoidal shaped pulses are obtained with the same laser configuration with simple and well-defined plates and pump power adjustments.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Intra-articular ozone infiltrations have been used as a therapeutic intervention in osteoarthritis of the knee with reports of favourable effects. However, this therapeutic procedure is still controversial due to the lack of scientific evidence to justify its use. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of intra-articular ozone infiltrations in patients with knee osteoarthritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search was performed in electronic databases such as Pubmed, Dialnet, Scielo, Medigraphic and other electronic sources from January 1990 to January 2018. We included controlled clinical trials that used intra-articular ozone infiltrations as a therapeutic intervention in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The variables analysed were the study design, risk of bias, clinical configuration, characteristics of the participants, characteristics of the interventions, results, length of follow-up and adverse events. RESULTS: Ten studies with a total of 400 patients treated with ozone vs 381 controls were included in the systematic review. Most studies had a high risk of bias. Intra-articular ozone infiltrations were more effective than placebo and were as effective as other interventional treatments in short-term follow-up. No adverse effects or serious adverse reactions were reported in the treated patients. CONCLUSION: Intra-articular ozone infiltration appears to be an effective therapeutic intervention in the short term. However studies with better methodological quality are needed to confirm its efficacy and to analyze long-term safety.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) during acute HIV infection is associated with favourable clinical and epidemiological outcomes. Barriers to prompt treatment initiation limit the benefits of universal access to ART in Mexico. We sought to create an algorithm for the immediate detection and treatment of patients with acute HIV infection. METHODS: A nationwide cohort of patients with acute HIV infection was created in 2015. In order to identify cases and treat them promptly at our centre, an interdisciplinary group coordinated through an instant-messaging tool using smart phones was established. When a probable case was detected, a discussion was initiated to confirm the diagnosis and facilitate the administrative processes to initiate ART as soon as possible. We compared time to ART initiation with that in a comparison group of patients with chronic HIV infection enrolled during the same period (May 2015 to February 2017) through routine care, using survival analysis estimators and log-rank tests. RESULTS: We recruited 29 patients with acute HIV infection. The median time to ART initiation was 2 days in these patients, in contrast to 21 days for patients with chronic infection. There were no significant differences in the percentages of patients engaged in care, on treatment or virologically suppressed at 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Implementing immediate ART initiation programmes is feasible in Mexico, in spite of the substantial administrative barriers that exist in the country. More extensive replication of this model in other centres and in patients with chronic infection is warranted to evaluate its effect on the continuum of care.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive persons is difficult, particularly in resource-limited settings. The relationship between TB culture status and mortality in HIV-positive persons treated for TB is unclear. METHODS: We evaluated HIV-positive adults treated for TB at or after their first HIV clinic visit in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Honduras, Mexico or Peru from 2000 to 2015. Anti-tuberculosis treatment included 2 months of isoniazid, rifampicin (RMP)/rifabutin (RBT), pyrazinamide ± ethambutol, followed by continuation phase treatment with isoniazid + RMP/RBT. RESULTS: Of 759 TB-HIV patients, 238 (31%) were culture-negative, 228 (30%) had unknown culture status or did not undergo culture and 293 (39%) were culture-positive. The median CD4 at TB diagnosis was 96 (interquartile range 40-228); 636 (84%) received concurrent antiretroviral therapy (ART) and anti-tuberculosis treatment. There were 123 (16%) deaths: 90/466 (19%) with TB culture-negative, unknown or not performed vs. 33/293 (11%) who were TB culture-positive (P = 0.005). In Kaplan-Meier analysis, mortality in TB patients without culture-confirmed disease was higher (P = 0.002). In a Cox model adjusted for age, sex, CD4, ART timing, disease site and stratified by study site, mortality in persons without culture-confirmed TB was not significantly increased compared to those with culture-positive TB (hazard ratio 1.39, 95%CI 0.89-2.16, P = 0.15). CONCLUSION: Most HIV-positive patients treated for TB did not have culture-confirmed TB, and mortality tended to be higher in patients without culture-confirmed disease, although the association was not statistically different after adjusting for other variables. Accurate TB diagnosis in HIV-positive persons is crucial.

RESUMEN

We analyze the water vapour-liquid and solid-liquid phase transitions from the perspective of hydrogen bond networks. Using molecular dynamics simulation data for the TIP4P/2005 and TIP4P/ice water models, we built hydrogen bond networks in the neighbourhood of the transitions. We studied the behaviour of some topological network properties: the average degree, clustering coefficient, and average path length. We found that these properties exhibit a discontinuity while approaching a phase transition region, similar to those that appear for some thermodynamic properties in the same region. This approach can be extended to characterize other water phase transitions. Besides, it can also be applied to study the phase transitions of other hydrogen-bonded substances or to other scenarios whose relevant "interaction" could be identified together with a "proper criterion" defined in an analogous way as in the case of hydrogen bonded systems.
