RESUMEN

Romosinuano is a tropically adapted Bos taurus breed, and some Mexican breeders aim to improve it genetically. The aim was to estimate allelic and genotypic frequencies for SNPs associated with meat quality in a Mexican Romosinuano population. Four hundred ninety-six animals were genotyped using the Axiom©BovMDv3 array. Only SNPs related to meat quality in this array were studied in this analysis. The Calpain, Calpastatin, and Melanocortin-4 receptor alleles were considered. Allelic and genotypic frequencies and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were estimated with the PLINK software. Alleles associated with meat tenderness and higher marbling scores were found in the Romosinuano cattle population. CAPN1_4751 was not found in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The rest of the markers could not be affected by selection and inbreeding. Romosinuano cattle in Mexico have similar genotypic frequencies in markers related to meat quality to Bos taurus breeds known for their meat tenderness. Breeders can choose a marker-assisted selection to improve meat quality characteristics.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of bee pollen (BP) and propolis (PRO) supplementation on rabbits' productive performance and serum metabolites through a meta-analysis. Sixteen peer-reviewed publications were included in the data set. The rabbit strains used in the studies included in the data set were New Zealand White, V-line, Rex, and V-line crosses. Weighted mean differences (WMD) between treatments supplemented with BP or PRO and control treatments were used to assess the magnitude of the effect. BP supplementation decreased (p < 0.001) daily feed intake (DFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR); however, increased (p < 0.001) average daily gain (ADG) and hot carcass yield (HCY). PRO supplementation reduced DFI (p = 0.041) and FCR (p < 0.001), and increased ADG (p < 0.001) and HCY (p = 0.005). In blood serum, BP supplementation increased total antioxidant capacity (TAC; p = 0.002) and decreased serum creatinine concentration (p = 0.049). Likewise, decreased serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were detected in response to BP supplementation (p < 0.05). PRO supplementation increased the TAC in blood serum (p = 0.018); however, decreased serum concentrations of AST, ALT, and MDA were observed (p < 0.05). In conclusion, BP or PRO supplementation can be used as a natural growth promoter in rabbits, and both can also improve rabbits' antioxidant status. However, BP or PRO supplementation does not affect rabbits' renal or hepatic health status.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of the Tropical Milking Criollo cattle (TMC) breed in Mexico through parameters derived from pedigree and genomic information assessment. The pedigree file consisted of 3780 animals. Seventy-nine bovines were genotyped with the medium-density single nucleotide polymorphism chip and considered a reference population for pedigree analysis. The effective population size and the probability of gene origin used to assess the evolution of genetic diversity were calculated with pedigree information. Inbreeding coefficients were evaluated based on pedigree (FPed), the genomic relationship matrix (FGRM), and runs of homozygosity (FROH) of different length classes. The average inbreeding was 2.82 ± 2.66%, −0.7 ± 3.8%, and 10.9 ± 3.0% for FPED, FGRM, and FROH, respectively. Correlation between FPED and FROH was significant only for runs of homozygosity > 4 Mb, indicating the FPED of a population with an average equivalent complete generation of five only recovers the most recent inbreeding. The parameters of the probability of gene origin indicated the existence of genetic bottlenecks and the loss of genetic diversity in the history of the TMC cattle population; however, pedigree and genomic information revealed the existence of current sufficient genetic diversity to design a sustainable breeding program.

The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of energy and protein supplementation on parasitological and hematological response during peripartum and lactation of productive and non-productive Pelibuey ewes in a tropical environment. Forty-eight Pelibuey ewes aged 3-5 years and with a body weight of 31 ± 5 kg were used. Four groups of 12 ewes, including non-pregnant and productive ewes, were formed. A factorial treatment design was formulated, where two levels of energy (low, 9.6 MJ/kg, n = 24; and high, 10.1 MJ/kg, n = 24) and two levels of protein (high, 15% crude protein in diet, n = 24; and low, 8% crude protein in diet, n = 24) were studied. Fecal and blood samples were collected to determine the fecal egg count (FEC) of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), packed cell volume (PCV) and peripheral eosinophil (EOS) count. These variables were rearranged with respect to the lambing date in a retrospective study. The high dietary protein level had a significant effect on reducing the FEC and increasing the PCV of ewes during lactation, in comparison with animals fed with the low protein level. Differences in the study variables were attributed to physiological stage. Lactating ewes showed the highest FEC values (2709 ± 359 EPG), the lowest PCV values (21.9 ± 0.7%) and the lowest EOS (0.59 ± 0.6 Cells × 103 µL). It is concluded that high levels of dietary protein improve the hematological response and reduce the FEC in Pelibuey ewes under grazing conditions. The non-pregnant ewes maintained some resilience and resistance to GIN infection compared to productive ewes.

A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed to elucidate genetic architecture of growth traits in Braunvieh cattle. Methods: The study included 300 genotyped animals by the GeneSeek® Genomic Profiler Bovine LDv.4 panel; after quality control, 22,734 SNP and 276 animals were maintained in the analysis. The examined phenotypic data considered birth (BW), weaning (WW), and yearling weights. The association analysis was performed using the principal components method via the egscore function of the GenABEL version 1.8-0 package in the R environment. The marker rs133262280 located in BTA 22 was associated with BW, and two SNPs were associated with WW, rs43668789 (BTA 11) and rs136155567 (BTA 27). New QTL associated with these liveweight traits and four positional and functional candidate genes potentially involved in variations of the analyzed traits were identified. The most important genes in these genomic regions were MCM2 (minichromosome maintenance complex component 2), TPRA1 (transmembrane protein adipocyte associated 1), GALM (galactose mutarotase), and NRG1 (neuregulin 1), related to embryonic cleavage, bone and tissue growth, cell adhesion, and organic development. This study is the first to present a GWAS conducted in Braunvieh cattle in Mexico providing evidence for genetic architecture of assessed growth traits. Further specific analysis of found associated genes and regions will clarify its contribution to the genetic basis of growth-related traits.

Abstract Background: Romosinuano cattle breed in Mexico has endured isolation and it is necessary to characterize it in order to facilitate sustainable genetic management. Objective: To assess the evolution of the structure and genetic diversity of the Romosinuano breed in Mexico, through pedigree analysis. Methods: Pedigree data was obtained from Asociación Mexicana de Criadores de Ganado Romosinuano y Lechero Tropical (AMCROLET). The ENDOG program (4.8 version) was used to analyze two datasets, one that includes upgrading from F1 animals (UP) and the other with only straight-bred cattle (SP). For both datasets, three reference populations were defined: 1998-2003 (RP1), 2004-2009 (RP2), and 2010-2017 (RP3). The pedigree included 3,432 animals in UP and 1,518 in SP. Demographic parameters were: Generation interval (GI), equivalent number of generations (EG), pedigree completeness index (PCI), and gene flow among herds. Genetic parameters were: Inbreeding (F) and average relatedness (AR) coefficients, effective population size (Nec), effective number of founders and ancestors, and number of founder genome equivalents. Results: The GI varied from 6.10 to 6.54 for UP, and from 6.47 to 7.16 yr for SP. The EG of the UP and SP improved >63% from RP1 to RP3. The PCI increased over time. No nucleus or isolated herds were found. For RP3, F and AR reached 2.08 and 5.12% in the UP, and 2.55 and 5.94% in the SP. For RP3, Nec was 57 in the UP and 45 in the SP. Genetic diversity losses were attributed mainly (>66%) to genetic drift, except for RP3 in the SP (44%). Conclusions: A reduction of the genetic diversity has been occurring after the Romosinuano breed association was established in Mexico, and this is mainly due to random loss of genes.


Resumen Antecedentes: La raza bovina Romosinuano ha estado prácticamente aislada en México y requiere ser caracterizada para un manejo genético sostenible. Objetivo: Evaluar la evolución de la estructura y diversidad genética de la raza Romosinuano en México, mediante el análisis del pedigrí. Métodos: Los datos genealógicos provinieron de la Asociación Mexicana de Criadores de Ganado Romosinuano y Lechero Tropical (AMCROLET). Los análisis se realizaron con el programa ENDOG (versión 4.8) para dos bases de datos, una que incluyó animales en cruzamiento absorbente (UP) a partir de F1 y la otra con sólo animales puros (SP). El PCI aumentó a través de los años, pero más para la SP que para la UP. No se encontraron hatos núcleo o aislados. Para RP3, F y AR alcanzaron 2,08 y 5,12% en la UP, y 2,55 y 5,94% en la SP. Para RP3, Nec fue 57 en la UP y 45 en la SP. Más de 66% de las pérdidas en diversidad genética se debieron a deriva genética, excepto para RP3 en la UP (44%). Conclusiones: una reducción de la diversidad genética ha estado ocurriendo después de que se formó la asociación de criadores de ganado Romosinuano en México, y es debida principalmente a pérdidas aleatorias de genes.

BACKGROUND: The in vitro gas production (GP) technique has been useful for evaluating the potential degradability of feedstuffs in ruminal environments; GP is related to the components of feedstuff ingredients. RESULTS: Linear models were generated and validated as alternatives of quantifying neutral detergent-soluble fiber, starch (St)/hemicellulose (Hem) and cellulose (Cel) through GP. Residuals of models obtained from the peaks of GP [0-8 h (GP-8), > 8-24 h (GP-24), > 24-48 h (GP-48) and > 24-81 h (GP-81)] of 0.02, 0.04, 0.08, 0.12 and 0.20 g of glucose (Glu), St and Cel respectively. The incubations were analyzed in mixtures of Glu, St and Cel. The best fitting models (r2 from 0.709 to 0.935) were tested on corn stover (CS) to quantify rapid fermentation fractions (RF; equivalent to Glu), medium fermentation fractions (MF; equivalent to St) and low fermentation fractions (LF48; equivalent to Cel); in CS, RF, MF and LF models had standardized residuals < 0.09. The analysis with Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala Lam. de Wit) and star grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst) consider high-protein ingredients. CONCLUSION: The in vitro GP of RF, MF and LF48 fractions equivalent to Glu, St and Cel are affected by maturity and harvest time even when the chemical composition remains similar, and so RF, MF and LF48 should be considered during the design of ruminant diets. In vitro GP could be used to quantify the components of some forages, although further studies are necessary. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Nutritional aspects modulate the parasitological and immune response in infected sheep. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the parasitological and humoral immune response of Pelibuey sheep experimentally infected with Haemonchus contortus that were fed diets with two different energy (n = 12) and protein (n = 12) levels. Twenty-four Pelibuey lambs infected with H. contortus were evaluated over 12 weeks. An additional six animals were considered as a control group. Fecal egg count (FEC) was determined, in addition to packed cell volume (PCV), total plasma protein (TPP), and immunoglobulin levels (IgA, IgG, and IgM) by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA). Data were analyzed by repeated measures over time. The lambs that received a high-energy (HighE) diet had the lowest FEC (P < 0.01) regardless of whether they received a high (HighP) or low (LowP) level of protein. The effect of energy level was also observed over time: FEC values decreased and PCV and TPP values increased. Higher immunoglobulin levels were obtained for females (P < 0.05) than males yet, overall, the energy and protein levels of the diets did not affect the response of the immunoglobulins. Over time, however, an increase in IgG and IgM was observed, whereas the IgA level remained basal.

Nitrogen plays an important role in the metabolism of living organisms due to the variety of physiological functions that involve molecules that contain it. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for milk nitrogen fractions and the casein:protein ratio in Mexican Brown Swiss population. Milk samples from 317 cows were used to determine total (TN), non-protein (NPN), and non-casein (NCN) nitrogen. Then, crude (CP), true (TP), and whey (WP) proteins, and casein (Cas) percentages were obtained. In addition, the ratios (%) Cas:CP (CCP) and Cas:TP (CTP) were calculated. (Co)variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using an animal model. The pedigree included 2616 animals. Heritabilities were obtained from single-trait and genetic correlations from bivariate analyses. The variation among cows was large for the studied traits. Heritability estimates could be regarded as high (> 0.7) for NCN, WP, CCP, and CTP, while for the rest of the traits, the estimates were from moderate to low magnitude. Genetic correlations estimates differed in magnitude, ranging from - 0.9 to 0.9. There is enough additive genetic variability to achieve genetic improvement for the traits studied; therefore, they could be considered in a breeding program for the studied population.

Heritable abnormalities can cause a reduction in productive performance, structural defects, or death of the animal. There are reports of hereditary abnormalities in Braunvieh cattle from several countries, but no evidence was found on their existence in Mexico. In this study, 28 genes associated with hereditary diseases were screened with the GGP-LD 30K array (GeneSeek®) in 300 Mexican registered Braunvieh animals. Allelic frequencies of the markers associated with illness were obtained for the following: citrullinaemia, spinal dysmyelination, spinal muscular atrophy, Brows Swiss fertility haplotype 2, congenital muscular dystonia, epidermolysis bullosa, Pompes, maple syrup urine, syndactyly, Weaver syndrome, crooked tail, deficiency of uridine monophosphate synthase, hypotrichosis, Marfan syndrome, and weak calf syndrome. The allelic frequency values were low for all the analysed loci (from 0.0015 to 0.0110), with exception of syndactyly (0.4145). Although homozygous animals for these genetic conditions were detected, no physical or physiological abnormalities associated with the clinical form of the diseases were observed in the sampled animals. Markers associated with a crooked tail, deficiency of uridine monophosphate synthase, hypotrichosis, Marfan syndrome, and weak calf syndrome were absent. The studied Mexican Braunvieh population does not present clinical or subclinical effects for ten diseases in homozygous animals. However, since the assessed animals are considered as breeding stock, the monitoring of carrier animals might be periodically necessary.

This study aimed to evaluate the hypothesis that mixed sequential grazing of dairy cows and breeding ewes is beneficial. During the seasons of spring-summer 2013 and autumn-winter 2013-2014, 12 (spring-summer) and 16 (autumn-winter) Holstein Friesian cows and 24 gestating (spring-summer) and lactating (autumn-winter) Pelibuey ewes grazed on six (spring-summer) and nine (autumn-winter) paddocks of alfalfa and orchard grass mixed pastures. The treatments "single species cow grazing" (CowG) and "mixed sequential grazing with ewes as followers of cows" (MixG) were evaluated, under a completely randomized design with two replicates per paddock. Herbage mass on offer (HO) and residual herbage mass (RH) were estimated by cutting samples. The estimate of herbage intake (HI) of cows was based on the use of internal and external markers; the apparent HI of ewes was calculated as the difference between HO (RH of cows) and RH. Even though HO was higher in CowG, the HI of cows was higher in MixG during spring-summer and similar in both treatments during autumn-winter, implying that in MixG the effects on the cows HI of higher alfalfa proportion and herbage accumulation rate evolving from lower residual herbage mass in the previous cycle counteracted that of a higher HO in CowG. The HI of ewes was sufficient to enable satisfactory performance as breeding ewes. Thus, the benefits of mixed sequential grazing arose from higher herbage accumulation, positive changes in botanical composition, and the achievement of sheep production without negative effects on the herbage intake of cows.

OBJECTIVE: From a review of published information on genetic association studies, a meta-analysis was conducted to determine the influence of the genes κ-casein (CSN3) and ß-lactoglobulin (LGB) on milk yield traits in Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, and Fleckvieh. METHODS: The GLIMMIX procedure was used to analyze milk production and percentage of protein and fat in milk. Models included the main effects and all their possible two-way interactions; not estimable effects and non-significant (p>0.05) two-way interactions were dropped from the models. The three traits analyzed used Poisson distribution and a log link function and were determined with the Interactive Data Analysis of SAS software. Least square means and multiple mean comparisons were obtained and performed for significant main effects and their interactions (p<0.0255). RESULTS: Interaction of breed by gene showed that Holstein and Fleckvieh were the breeds on which CSN3 (6.01%±0.19% and 5.98%±0.22%), and LGB (6.02%±0.19% and 5.70%±0.22%) have the greatest influence. Interaction of breed by genotype nested in the analyzed gene indicated that Holstein and Jersey showed greater influence of the CSN3 AA genotype, 6.04%±0.22% and 5.59%±0.31% than the other genotypes, while LGB AA genotype had the largest influence on the traits analyzed, 6.05%±0.20% and 5.60%±0.19%, respectively. Furthermore, interaction of type of statistical model by genotype nested in the analyzed gene indicated that CSN3 and LGB genes had similar behavior, maintaining a difference of more than 7% across analyzed genotypes. These results could indicate that both Holstein and Jersey have had lower substitution allele effect in selection programs that include CSN3 and LGB genes than Brown Swiss and Fleckvieh. CONCLUSION: Breed determined which genotypes had the greatest association with analyzed traits. The mixed model based in Bayesian or Ridge Regression was the best alternative to analyze CSN3 and LGB gene effects on milk yield and protein and fat percentages.

Background: a concern for breeders is whether an animal ranking based on genetic evaluations is similar to that obtained from show-ring judging. Objective: to determine the association between rankings for Braunvieh (BR) and Brown Swiss (BS) cattle of Mexico based on show-ring judging and their respective expected progeny differences (EPDs) or predicted transmitted abilities (PTAs). Methods: ranking values from judging were transformed using the rankit transformation. For each breed, Pearson correlation analyses were performed between the transformed rank values of the animals obtained from judging at the show-ring and their EPD or PTA values. Results: using the complete databases, in both breeds the correlation coefficient estimates were low (<0.18) but different from zero (p<0.05). The correlation coefficient considering PTAs for milk yield in BS was slightly higher than those obtained for any EPD for growth traits in BR. Correlations in adult animals (0.18 to 0.23) were different from zero (p<0.05) and higher than those of young animals or calves, while those within males or females were similar. Correlations within years of judging in the show-ring were variable and did not indicate any specific trend. Conclusions: show-ring rank results are associated with genetic evaluation of animals, although the magnitude is low. Selection of breeding animals based on show-ring judgment could be used as a complementary tool to genetic evaluation.


Antecedentes: una preocupación de los criadores es si la jerarquización de los animales basada en evaluaciones genéticas es similar a la del juzgamiento en la pista. Objetivo: determinar la asociación entre la jerarquización de animales con base en el juzgamiento en pista y sus respectivas diferencias esperadas en la progenie (EPDs) o habilidades de transmisión predicha (PTAs), para animales Pardo Suizo Europeo (BR) y Americano (BS) de México. Métodos: los valores jerárquicos del juzgamiento fueron transformados usando la transformación rankit. Para cada raza, análisis de correlación de Pearson fueron realizados entre los valores jerárquicos transformados de los animales obtenidos del juzgamiento en la pista y sus valores de EPD o PTA. Resultados: usando las bases de datos completas, en ambas razas los coeficientes de correlación estimados fueron bajos (<0,18) y diferentes de cero (p<0,05). El coeficiente de correlación considerando las PTAs para producción de leche en BS fue ligeramente mayor que los obtenidos con cualquier EPD de las características de crecimiento en BR. Las correlaciones en animales adultos (0,18 a 0,23) fueron diferentes de cero (p<0,05) y mayores que las de animales jóvenes o becerros; mientras que para hembras y machos fueron similares. Correlaciones por año de juzgamiento en pista fueron variables y sin tendencia específica. Conclusiones: la jerarquización de animales usando los resultados de juzgamiento en la pista y las evaluaciones genéticas están asociadas pero en baja magnitud. La selección de animales con base en su juzgamiento en pista puede usarse como herramienta complementaria a la evaluación genética.

Objetivo: determinar a associação entre a classificação de animais baseada no julgamento em pista e suas respectivas diferenças esperadas na progênie (EDPs) o habilidades de transmissão preditas (PTAs), para as animais Braunvieh (BR) e Brown Swiss (BS) do México. Métodos: os valores de classificação dos animais durante o julgamento foram transformados por meio da metodologia rankit. Para cada raça, análises de correlação de Pearson foram realizadas entre os valores de classificação transformados obtidos pela avaliação na pista de julgamento e seus valores de EPD o PTA. Resultados: usando a base de dados completa, em ambas as raças os coeficientes de correlação foram baixos (<0,18) e diferentes de zero (p<0,05). O coeficiente de correlação considerando as PTAs para produção de leite na BS foi ligeiramente maior que os obtidos com qualquer EPD das características de crescimento na BR. Correlações em animais adultos (0,18 a 0,23) foram diferentes de zero (p<0,05) e mais elevadas do que aquelas de animais jovens ou bezerros; enquanto que para as fêmeas e os machos foram semelhantes. Correlações por anos na pista de julgamento foram variáveis e sem tendência específica. Conclusões: a classificação de animais usando os resultados na pista de julgamento e as avaliações genéticas estão associadas, mas em baixa magnitude. A seleção de animais baseada nos resultados na pista de julgamento pode usar-se apenas como ferramenta complementar à avaliação genética.

Production of beef cattle is one of the most important economic activities in Mexico. However, anthelmintic resistance (AR) has affected animal productivity. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of AR in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) of beef cattle in Candelaria Municipality of Campeche State, Mexico. Sixty-five-month-old beef calves were selected for the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) and the inhibition of egg hatch (IEH) assay. These parameters were determined using albendazole (benzimidazole, BZ), ivermectin (IVM, Macrocyclic lactone, ML) and levamisole (LEV, imidazothiazole, IMZ). Allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) confirmed polymorphisms at codon 200 of isotype 1 of the ß-tubulin gene of Haemonchus placei. The results showed 32 % IVM toxicity by FECRT, indicating problems of AR in the GIN population. In contrast, BZ and LEV showed 95 and 100 % toxicity, respectively, against GIN from infected beef calves. The infective larvae (L3) of Cooperia, Haemonchus and Oesophagostomum were identified before anthelmintic treatment, and Cooperia L3 larvae were identified after treatment with IVM. The IEH assays had lethal dose 50 (LD50) of 187 nM to BZ, confirming the ovicidal effect of BZ. In contrast, the LD50 for LEV and IVM were 3.3 and 0.4 mM, respectively. The results obtained by AS-PCR confirmed two DNA fragments of 250 and 550 bp, corresponding to the resistant and susceptible alleles in the H. placei population. The nematode Cooperia showed AR against IVM, while the toxicity effect of BZ against GIN with both FECRT and IEH was confirmed.

The objective was to estimate the allelic and genotypic frequencies, genetic diversity and polymorphic information content for the β-casein, κ-casein and β-lactoglobulin genes. Blood and frozen semen samples were collected from 453 Jersey individuals registered by the Mexican Jersey Cattle Association. Twenty eight breed specific SNP primers for whole genes were used. The B allele of κ-casein had higher frequency (0.69) than the A (0.26) and E (0.05). For β-lactoglobulin, the highest frequency was for B (0.72), followed by A and C alleles (0.26 and 0.02, respectively). The β-casein allele with the highest frequency was A² (0.71), followed by A¹ (0.19), A³ (0.05), B (0.04) and C (0.01). The average genetic diversity (He) was 0.53. The average locus effective allele number was 1.79. These results indicate a high allelic diversity for κ-caseín, β-casein and β-lactoglobulin that could be included in breeding programs in the population studied, aimed to improve the milk quality traits of economic importance.

The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude of genotype by climate interaction (GCI) in the national genetic evaluation for weaning (WW) and yearling (YW) weights of Mexican Braunvieh cattle. The numbers of performance records and animals in the pedigree were 12,364 and 25,173 for WW, and 7,991 and 18,072 for YW, respectively. Performance records were clustered based on climatological variables into: dry tropic (DT), wet tropic (WT), and temperate (TE) climates. Animal models were used to estimate genetic parameters and predict breeding values in each of the climates. Bivariate analyses were carried out for pairwise combinations of climates on each trait, considering the same trait in different climates as a different trait. Criteria to evaluate GCI were genetic correlations (r g), correlations between predicted breeding values (r BV), and frequencies of coincidence (FC) in the ranking of the top 25 sires. Results of comparisons between pairs of climates were variable, depending on specific cases. For WW, the r g, r BV, and FC ranged from -0.36 to 0.84, -0.60 to 0.97, and 0.16 to 0.92, respectively; whereas for YW, they fluctuated between 0.23 and 0.99, 0.33 and 1.00, and 0.60 and 1.00, respectively. For both traits, the results suggest absence of GCI between DT and TE; however, GCI was detected in the other pairs of climates, where WT was involved. To maximize genetic progress, the joint genetic evaluation should be performed only for animals with performance data in DT and TE, whereas a separated evaluation is suggested for animals with performance records generated under WT conditions.

El objetivo fue evaluar la bondad de ajuste de 16 ecuaciones para ajustar curvas de lactancia en seis genotipos bovinos. Se analizaron registros semanales o mensuales de producción de leche de vacas Pardo Suizo Americano (n=826 lactancias), Bos indicus (BI, n=52), ¾BI»Bos taurus (BT, n=507), ½BI½BT (n=462), 3/8 BI 5/8 BT (n=167) y »BI¾BT (n=62). Los parámetros de las ecuaciones se estimaron, para cada lactancia individual, por regresión lineal y no lineal, y las comparaciones se realizaron con base en los cuadrados medios de residuales, mediante la jerarquización dentro de genotipo utilizando la prueba de Suma de Rangos de Friedman. Otros criterios adicionales fueron la proporción de casos con producción de leche diaria anormal y los casos con autocorrelación positiva. Existieron diferencias (P<0,05) en la bondad de ajuste de las ecuaciones a través de genotipos. Sin embargo, para todos los genotipos la ecuación de mejor ajuste (P<0,05) fue una reparametrización de la ecuación de Wood, la cual considera la primera fecha de muestreo como el tiempo cero.


The objective was to evaluate the goodness of fit of 16 equations to estimate lactation curves of six cattle genotypes. Monthly or weekly milk production records of Brown Swiss (n=826 lactations), Bos indicus (BI, n=52), ¾BI»Bos taurus (BT, n=507), ½BI½BT (n=462), BIBT (n=167) and »BI¾BT (n=62) cows were analyzed. Fitting of equations to individual lactations was performed by linear or non-linear regression. The residual mean squares obtained after fitting of the equations were ranked within genotype and compared by Friedman’s test. Additional criteria to compare the equations were the proportion of cases of abnormal daily milk production, and cases with positive autocorrelation. Equations differed (P<0.05) on their suitability to properly describe lactation curves across genotypes. However, for all genotypes the equation of best fit (P<0.05) was a reparameterization of Wood’s equation in which the first test date is considered as time zero. The use of this equation is recommended to fit lactation curves of cattle genotypes such as the ones evaluated in this study.

Se evaluó el efecto de factores ambientales en la producción de leche ajustada a 305 días (PLT), la producción (PP) y los días al pico (DPP) de lactancia, y la persistencia (PER) en vacas Holstein de agroempresas familiares con diferente nivel tecnológico (NT) en el estado de Jalisco, México. La información analizada (n= 4323 mediciones de producción diaria de leche de 537 lactancias) provino de 16 hatos. Las agroempresas se tipificaron como de bajo, medio o alto NT. El modelo mixto incluyó los efectos fijos de NT, número, año y estación de parto. La PLT en el NT bajo fue similar (P>0,05) entre épocas; sin embargo, en el NT medio la PLT en lluvias fue 11 por ciento mayor que en secas; mientras que en el NT alto la situación se invirtió, observándose una interacción similar para PP. Las vacas en bajo o alto NT presentaron más tarde (P<0,01) los DPP que aquellas en NT medio (68,7 y 77,2 vs 47,7 días). La PER en NT medio o alto fue similar entre épocas; sin embargo, en NT bajo fue más alta (P<0,01) en secas (60 por ciento) que en lluvias (44 por ciento). La producción de leche difiere por NT entre agroempresas familiares, lo cual debe ser considerado por los programas de desarrollo rural.

En este estudio se evaluó la fluctuación en la población de Haematobia irritans de febrero 2004 a febrero 2005, en Martínez de la Torre, Veracruz, México. Se utilizaron 15 vaquillas F1 (Holstein por Brahman) de 11 ± 2 meses de edad y 170 ± 19 kg de peso, infestadas en forma natural por la H. irritans. La población de moscas se correlacionó con cinco variables climáticas y se evaluó por medio de conteos semanales con observaciones directas a los bovinos a potrero. La mosca H. irritans estuvo presente todo el año (35,1 ± 35,2 moscas/animal); sin embargo, las mayores infestaciones con esta plaga se registraron en los meses de septiembre y octubre. El pico poblacional de H. irritans fue de 121 moscas/animal. El grado de infestación estuvo asociado principalmente con la precipitación acumulada (r = 0,70, P<0,05). Otros factores como la temperatura y humedad relativa, también fueron importantes en determinar la incidencia y nivel de infestación de ataque de este ecto-parásito. Se concluye que en esta región, el control de la H. irritans debe realizarse hacia el final de la época de lluvias y principios de la época de tormentas invernales.


The population fluctuation of Haematobia irritans was evaluated in this study from February 2004 to February 2005 at Martínez de la Torre, Veracruz, México. Distribution of horn fly throughout a year was monitored in 15 heifers F1 (Holstein x Brahman) of 11 ± 2 months of age and 170 ± 19 kg of weight. In addition, horn fly population was correlated with five weather variables and evaluated by weekly counts with direct observation on grazing cattle. H. irritans was present year round (35.1 ± 35.2 flies/cattle); however, higher infestations of this pest were registered during the months of September and October. Population peak of H. irritans was of 121 flies/cattle. The grade of infestation was mainly associated with accumulated rainfall (r = 0.70, P<0.05); nevertheless, other factors as temperature and relative humidity were also important to determine the incidence and severity of the attack of this ecto-parasite. It may be concluded that in this region, H. irritans control must be carried out at the end of the rainy season and at the beginning of windy winter season.
