RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the microhardness, roughness, profilometry and cross-sectional hardness of single increment materials submitted to different challenges. METHODS: Thirty-six disks of each material, Filtek Supreme XTE (FT), Filtek One Bulk Fill (BK), Ketac Molar Easy Mix (KT) and Equia Forte + Coat (EQ) were immersed in saliva, pH cycling and Coke for 15 days. Half of each surface was used as its own control. Superficial microhardness, roughness, perfilometry analysis were performed. All samples were sectioned, embedded in acrylic resins, polished and cross-sectional hardness were made. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The KT presented superficial microhardness superior than EQ. However, in depth, EQ showed superior values. FT, KT suffered the effects of challenges on microhardness values. The highest roughness and wear values were found for KT. RC do not suffer wear. All materials suffered the effects of Coke and pH challenges in depths 10 µm and 60 µm. CONCLUSION: The single increment restorative material that suffered less action on its surface was the bulk-fill resin. The coat present in the hybrid ionomer was able to resist to the immersion actions. In addition, Coke was the most aggressive challenge.

RESUMEN

Changes in the expression of the protein disulfide isomerase genes PDIA3 and PDIA6 may increase endoplasmic reticulum stress, leading to cellular instability and neoplasia. We evaluated the expression of PDIA3 and PDIA6 in invasive ductal carcinomas. Using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction, we compared the mRNA expression level in 45 samples of invasive ductal carcinoma with that in normal breast samples. Increased expression of the PDIA3 gene in carcinomas (P = 0.0009) was observed. In addition, PDIA3 expression was increased in tumors with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.009) and with grade III (P < 0.02). The PDIA6 gene showed higher expression levels in the presence of lymph node metastasis (U = 99.00, P = 0.0476) and lower expression for negative hormone receptors status (P = 0.0351). Our results suggest that alterations in PDIA3/6 expression levels may be involved in the breast carcinogenic process and should be further investigated as a marker of aggressiveness.

The effect of two sources of fat, calcium salts of soybean oil, Lac100® (Yakult), a source of omega-6 fatty acids or whole flaxseed (Linum usitatissiumum), a source of omega-3 fatty acids were evaluated to determine the apparent digestibility of dry matter (DDM), crude protein (DCP), neutral detergent fiber (DNDF), acid detergent fiber (DADF), and ether extract (DEE); and blood concentrations of HDL, LDL, VLDL, cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, calcium, phosphorus, N-urea, and progesterone. Ten lactating Holstein cows were allocated in two treatments and a completely randomized design was used. Cows fed Lac100® had higher values of DNDF (57.44 percent vs. 50.80 percent) and DEE (77.70 percent vs. 72.18 percent) compared to those fed flaxseed. Cows fed Lac100® had higher blood concentrations of LDL (111.00 vs. 45.46mg/dL), HDL (82.27 vs. 64.93mg/dL), and total cholesterol (203.60 vs. 116.13mg/dL) and lower N-urea (13.22 vs. 15.19mg/dL) compared to those fed flaxseed. Blood concentrations of glucose, calcium, phosphorus, and progesterone were similar between the treatments. These results suggest that dietary fat modifies DNDF and DEE and blood concentrations of LDL, HDL, VLDL, and total cholesterol in lactating dairy cows.

RESUMEN

Laryngectomy for treatment of laryngeal-pharyngeal carcinomas may impair the sensation in the larynx and epiglottis, with consequent impairment of esophageal motility. Our aim in the present study was to investigate the esophageal motility of laryngectomized patients. Esophageal manometry was performed on 17 patients submitted to laryngectomy 2 to 71 months (median 29 months) before the examination. Eleven were rehabilitated with esophageal voice and six could not speak. Ten swallows of a 5 ml bolus of water were recorded at the lower esophageal sphincter and at 5, 10 and 15 cm above it. The lower esophageal sphincter pressure was measured by the rapid pull-through method and the upper esophageal sphincter pressure by the station pull-through method. The results were compared with those obtained for a control group of 40 healthy volunteers. The amplitude of contractions was lower and the number of nonperistaltic contractions was higher in laryngectomized patients than in volunteers (P < 0.05). The duration of lower esophageal sphincter relaxation (7.4 +/- 1.5 s) was shorter in laryngectomized patients than in volunteers (8.8 +/- 1.6 s, P < 0.05). The upper esophageal sphincter pressure was lower (34.9 +/- 29.1 mm Hg) in laryngectomized patients than in volunteers (61.2 +/- 20.8 mm Hg, P < 0.05). There was no difference between groups in contraction duration or velocity, in the numbers of multipeaked or failed contractions, lower esophageal sphincter pressure or in the number of swallows followed by complete lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. In conclusion, laryngectomy causes esophageal motility impairment characterized by low contraction amplitude, nonperistaltic contraction and shorter lower esophageal sphincter relaxation duration.
