RESUMEN

PURPOSE: It has recently found that adipokines, play a numerous functional roles in inflammation, lipids and glucose metabolism and in the pathogenically conditions such as atherosclerosis and insulin resistance. Therefore, for the first time we aimed the present study to evaluating serum levels of CTRP5 and inflammatory cytokines patients with CAD and T2DM in comparison with controls. METHODS: This study was done on 44 patients with CAD, 45 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 41 CAD + T2DM and 41 controls. Serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6, MCP-1 and CTRP5 were investigated by ELISA method. RESULTS: The CTRP5 levels of all patients groups were lower in comparison with control group. There was a significant negative relationship between CTRP5 levels and cytokines concentration in the studied patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested a potential role of CTRP5 in inflammatory process of underlying atherosclerosis and diabetes; however, more studies are needed to support these finding.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed the possible association between obesity, dietary pattern, and depressive symptoms. Due to the lack of enough data to confirm the association of obesity and depression in the Middle East, here, we aimed to explore the possible mediatory role of adipokines Galectin-3, transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß), and endothelial plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) in the association between low carbohydrate diet (LCD) and depressive symptoms. METHODS: A total of 256 women aged 17-56 years old were grouped based on their LCD score. Depression anxiety stress scales-21 (DASS-21) self-administered questionnaire was used to evaluate the three negative emotional states of stress, depressive symptoms, and anxiety. Body composition and dietary intake were assessed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the serum levels of Galectin-3, TGF-ß, and PAI-1. RESULTS: No significant difference was observed regarding Galectin-3, TGF-ß, and PAI-1 levels between the groups with dissimilar adherence to LCD or the groups with different levels of depressive symptoms (P>0.05). However, there was a negative association between LCD score as a covariant and depressive symptoms as an independent variable (P = 0.02) and remarkably, a regression model linear analysis using Galectin-3, TGF-ß, and PAI-1 as confounding variables indicated the mediatory role of these adipokines in this association (P>0.05). In other words, adipokines eliminated the significance of the relationship between adherence to LCD and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: It seems that higher adherence to LCD is probably associated with a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms in obese adults through the mediatory role of adipokines.

AIMS: Adipokines play a major role in developing metabolic syndrome (MetS), and it has been found that there is a significant relationship between MetS and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in obese people. The present study aimed to investigate the mediatory effect of adipokines on the RMR-MetS relationship. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 263 obese and overweight women, mean BMI 33.28 (4.93) kg/m, and mean age 39.02 (11.60) who were assessed for RMR using indirect calorimetry. Moreover, using the body composition analyzer the Body composition was measured. Also, Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test provided a quantitative measurement of biochemical parameters. RESULTS: The results indicated that women in low RMR group had higher fat mass (P < 0.0001), FFM (P = 0.002), weight (P = 0.006), BMI (P < 0.0001), age (P = 0.01), and hs-CRP (P = 0.001). The results did not confirm any significant mediating roles for RBP4 (P = 0.051, ß = -0.28) and Vaspin (P = 0.06, ß = 0.32) in the RMR-MetS relationship. Additionally, after a binary regression test, Omentin-1 showed a significant mediating role (P = 0.25, ß = 0.04) as an interrelated agent to RMR and MetS. CONCLUSION: As this study shows, Omentin-1 was found to play a significant mediating role as a mediatory agent in relationship between RMR and MetS.

BACKGROUND & AIM: Previous studies have explored the relation of metabolic syndrome (MetS), its components and the risk of albuminuria/proteinuria but their results are inconsistent. Then, we aimed to conduct a meta-analysis in order to resolve these controversies. METHOD: PubMed and Scopus were systematically searched from their inception to 1 march 2018. Risk estimates and their 95% confidence intervals were extracted and pooled using the random-effects approach. RESULT: A total of 57 studies, 44 studies on albuminuria and 13 studies on proteinuria, with a total sample size of 10,603,067 participants, were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, MetS was contributed to higher risks of proteinuria (OR = 2.08, 95%CI = 1.85-2.34) and albuminuria (OR = 1.92, 95%CI = 1.71-2.15), independent of diabetes status; although, this relationship was more noticeable in studies that used the WHO definition of MetS and in non-East Asian populations. Also, the relationship between MetS and proteinuria was sex independent, while, for albuminuria was significant only in men. MetS components such as obesity, impaired fasting glucose, elevated blood pressure and hypertriglyceridemia were associated with significant increases in proteinuria and albuminuria risk, while lower HDL-Cholesterol was only linked to greater risk of proteinuria. Moreover, the total impact of MetS on proteinuria was more remarkable than each component of the syndrome and an escalating dose-response association was found between the number of MetS components and albuminuria risk. CONCLUSION: MetS and its components are potential risk factors for albuminuria and proteinuria.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that Vitamin D deficiency is very common globally. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with lipid metabolism. A relationship between vitamin D levels and waist circumference (WC) has been observed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and metabolic dyslipidemia and the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 265 healthy Tehran adults. Hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype (HTGWP) was described as serum triacylglycerol concentrations >150 mg/dL and concurrent WC > 88 cm (women) and >102 cm (men). Dyslipidemia was defined as: 1) TG level of >150 mg/dL 2) HDL > 40 mg/dL for men or >50 mg/dL for women, as has been previously described. RESULTS: Current study's results demonstrated that HTGWP was significantly associated with weight, age, WC, hip, fat percent, TG, lipid profile, ALT and BMI. We found 77% reduction in the chances of developing metabolic dyslipidemia in suficient satus of vitamin D in compare to deficiency, although the significancy was mariginal, OR: 0.33, 95% CI of 0.09 to 1.21, P = 0.09. However, our results revealed that vitamin D deficiency, compared with normal status, can increase the risk of phenotype 1 (high TG/high WC); OR: 3.86 and 95% CI from 0.86 to 0.99, p for trend = 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: Significant associations were found between vitamin D status and HTGWP. In addition, there was a relationship between vitamin D and lipid profiles. There is a direct correlation between TG and waist circumference in insulin resistance in healthy Tehran adults.
