RESUMEN

We report on the demonstration of a diode-pumped, Tm:YLF-based, chirped pulse amplification laser system operating at λ ≈ 1.9 µm that produces amplified pulse energies exceeding 1.5 J using a single 8-pass power amplifier. The amplified pulses are subsequently compressed to sub-300 fs durations by a diffraction grating pair, producing record >1 TW peak power pulses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest peak power demonstrated for any solid-state, near-2 µm laser architecture and illustrates the potential of Tm:YLF for the next generation of high-power, diode-pumped ultrashort lasers.

RESUMEN

We report on the generation of high energy, high power pulses in a tabletop diode-pumped Tm:YLF-based laser system, which delivers amplified pulse energies up to 108 J, as well as GW peak power performance when seeded with nanosecond duration pulses. Furthermore, the high power and efficiency capabilities of operating Tm:YLF in the multi-pulse extraction (MPE) regime were explored by seeding the experimental setup with a multi-kHz burst of pulses exhibiting a low individual pulse fluence, resulting in a 3.6 kW average power train of multi-joule-level pulses with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 19%.

RESUMEN

High peak and average power lasers with high wall-plug efficiency, like the Big Aperture Thulium (BAT) laser, have garnered tremendous attention in laser technology. To meet the requirements of the BAT laser, we have developed low-dispersion reflection multilayer dielectric (MLD) gratings suitable for compression of high-energy pulses for operations at 2 micron wavelength. We carried out 10000-on-1 damage tests to investigate the fluence damage thresholds of the designed MLD gratings and mirrors, which were found between 100-230 mJ/cm2. An ultrashort pulsed laser (FWHM = 53 fs, λ = 1.9 µm) operating at 500 Hz was used in the serpentine raster scans. The atomic force microscope images of the damage sites show blister formation of the underlying layers at lower fluences but ablation of the grating pillars at higher fluences. We simulated the dynamic electronic excitation in the MLD optics with a finite-difference in the time domain approach in 2D. The simulation results agree well with the LIDT measurements and the observed blister formation. This model is able to evaluate the absolute LIDT of MLD gratings.

RESUMEN

We report the demonstration of a diode-pumped Tm:YLF laser operating at 1.88 µm that produces pulse energies up to 3.88 J in 20 ns. The compact system consists of a Q-switched cavity-dumped oscillator generating 18 mJ pulses, which are then amplified in a four-pass power amplifier. Energies up to 38.1 J were obtained with long-pulse amplifier operation. These results illustrate the high energy storage and extraction capabilities of diode-pumped Tm:YLF, opening the path to high peak and average power mid-infrared solid-state lasers.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate the generation of 1.1 J pulses of picosecond duration at 1 kHz repetition rate (1.1 kW average power) from a diode-pumped chirped pulse amplification Yb:YAG laser. The laser employs cryogenically cooled amplifiers to generate λ=1030nm pulses with average power of up to 1.26 kW prior to compression with excellent beam quality. Pulses are compressed to 4.5 ps duration with 90% efficiency. This compact picosecond laser will enable a variety of applications that require high energy ultrashort pulses at kilohertz repetition rates.

RESUMEN

We report results of a study of the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) behavior of ion beam sputtered HfO2/SiO2 multilayer coatings on Yb:YAG using 1-on-1 and N-on-1 test protocols. The tests were conducted at ambient, vacuum, and cryogenic conditions using 280 ps pulses at λ=1030nm. The 1-on-1 LIDT of antireflection (AR) stacks is found to be only slightly reduced under vacuum and cryogenic conditions, while that of high reflectivity (HR) stacks is insensitive to environmental conditions within the uncertainty of the measurements. Cryogenic N-on-1 tests show the LIDT of the HR coating is almost the same as in the 1-on-1 tests. Conversely, the cryogenic N-on-1 test of the AR coating shows damage at ∼13J/cm2, a fluence lower than the 20.4J/cm2 of 1-on-1 tests. The AR damage behavior is found to be affected by imperfections at the Yb:YAG surface. These findings show that high surface quality is required to increase energy extraction from active mirror laser amplifiers.

RESUMEN

We report the demonstration of a pulse synthesizer based on spatial beam splitting and pulse stacking for the generation of picosecond laser pulses of Joule-level energy with arbitrary shape. An array of liquid crystals is used to control the amplitude of ten individual sub-pulses, and sliding retroreflectors are used to adjust their temporal separations. The synthesizer was used in combination with a λ=1.03 µm diode-pumped cryogenically-cooled Yb: YAG chirped pulse amplification laser to synthesize 1.3 J pulses or pulse trains of arbitrary shapes up to 9 ns duration with a temporal resolution as short as 8 ps. This pulse synthesizer offers the opportunity to incorporate a self-learning system to search for the optimal laser pulse shapes for various applications including optimized plasma conditions in laser-plasma based soft x-ray lasers and plasma sources for extreme ultraviolet lithography.

RESUMEN

Heat generation is a key obstacle to scaling high energy solid-state lasers to the multi-kilowatt average powers required for several key applications. We demonstrate an accurate, in situ, noninvasive optical technique to that makes three-dimensional (3-D) temperature maps within cryogenic amplifiers operating at high average power. The temperature is determined by analyzing the fluorescence spectra with a neural network function. The accuracy of the technique relies on a calibration that does not depend on simulations. Results are presented for a cryogenic Yb:YAG active mirror laser amplifier operating at different pump conditions. The technique is applicable to other solid-state lasers materials.

RESUMEN

Ta2O5/SiO2 high reflection (HR) interference coatings for λ∼1 µm offer superior performance at high irradiance conditions. However, these coatings are not good candidates for high peak power conditions in comparison to HfO2/SiO2 multilayer stacks. Here we show that the modification of the top layers design of a quarter wave Ta2O5/SiO2 high reflector leads to 4-5 fold increase in the laser damage fluence compared to a quarter wave (Ta2O5/SiO2)15 when tested at λ=1.03 µm using pulse durations of 0.19 and 4 ns and peak power densities of 43.5 and 216 GW/cm2. One of the designs achieved a laser damage threshold fluence of 174 J/cm2 at 4 ns, which is 10% higher than that of a HfO2/SiO2 quarter wave design.

RESUMEN

We report the demonstration of a diode-pumped chirped pulse amplification Yb:YAG laser that produces λ=1.03 µm pulses of up to 1.5 J energy compressible to sub-5 ps duration at a repetition rate of 500 Hz (750 W average power). Amplification to high energy takes place in cryogenically cooled Yb:YAG active mirrors designed for kilowatt average power laser operation. This compact laser system will enable new advances in high-average-power ultrashort-pulse lasers and high-repetition-rate tabletop soft x-ray lasers. As a first application, the laser was used to pump a 400 Hz λ=18.9 nm laser.

RESUMEN

We report the uninterrupted operation of an 18.9 nm wavelength tabletop soft x-ray laser at 100 Hz repetition rate for extended periods of time. An average power of about 0.1 mW was obtained by irradiating a Mo target with pulses from a compact diode-pumped chirped pulse amplification Yb:YAG laser. Series of up to 1.8 x 10(5) consecutive laser pulses of ~1 µJ energy were generated by displacing the surface of a high shot-capacity rotating molybdenum target by ~2 µm between laser shots. As a proof-of-principle demonstration of the use of this compact ultrashort wavelength laser in applications requiring a high average power coherent beam, we lithographically printed an array of nanometer-scale features using coherent Talbot self-imaging.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate the operation of a gain-saturated table-top soft x-ray laser at 100 Hz repetition rate. The laser generates an average power of 0.15 mW at λ=18.9 nm, the highest laser power reported to date from a sub-20-nm wavelength compact source. Picosecond laser pulses of 1.5 µJ energy were produced at λ=18.9 nm by amplification in a Mo plasma created by tailoring the temporal intensity profile of single pump pulses with 1 J energy produced by a diode-pumped chirped pulse amplification Yb:YAG laser. Lasing was also obtained in the 13.9 nm line of Ni-like Ag. These results increase by an order of magnitude the repetition rate of plasma-based soft x-ray lasers opening the path to milliwatt average power table-top lasers at sub-20 nm wavelengths.

RESUMEN

We have demonstrated an 18.9 nm Ni-like molybdenum soft x-ray laser, pumped by a compact all-diode-pumped Yb:YAG laser. The solid-state pump laser produces 8.5 ps pulses with up to 1 J energy at 10 Hz repetition rate. This diode-pumped laser has the potential to greatly increase the repetition rate and the average power of soft x-ray lasers on a significantly smaller footprint.
