RESUMEN

This work focuses on the nature of magnetic anisotropy in 2.5-16 micron thick films of nickel ferrite (NFO) grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). The technique, ideal for rapid growth of epitaxial oxide films, was utilized for films on (100) and (110) substrates of magnesium gallate (MGO). The motivation was to investigate the dependence of the growth induced anisotropy field on film thickness since submicron films of NFO were reported to show a very high anisotropy. The films grown at 850-875 C and subsequently annealed at 1000 C were found to be epitaxial, with the out-of-plane lattice constant showing unanticipated decrease with increasing film thickness and the estimated in-plane lattice constant increasing with the film thickness. The uniaxial anisotropy field Hσ, estimated from X-ray diffraction data, ranged from 2.8-7.7 kOe with the films on (100) MGO having a higher Hσ value than for the films on (110) MGO. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements for in-plane and out-of-plane static magnetic field were utilized to determine both the magnetocrystalline the anisotropy field H4 and the uniaxial anisotropy field Ha. Values of H4 range from -0.24 to -0.86 kOe. The uniaxial anisotropy field Ha was an order of magnitude smaller than Hσ and it decreased with increasing film thickness for NFO films on (100) MGO, but Ha increased with film thickness for films on (110) MGO substrates. These observations indicate that the origin of the induced anisotropy could be attributed to several factors including (i) strain due to mismatch in the film-substrate lattice constants, (ii) possible variations in the bond lengths and bond angles in NFO during the growth process, and (iii) the strain arising from mismatch in the thermal expansion coefficients of the film and the substrate due to the high growth and annealing temperatures involved in the LPE technique. The LPE films of NFO on MGO substrates studied in this work are of interest for use in high frequency devices.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac disease in pregnancy is a major cause of maternal mortality and morbidity in women, particularly in resource limited countries like Nepal. Rheumatic Heart Disease is the commonest cardiac disease complicating pregnancy. There is very limited data and evidence from Nepal regarding rheumatic heart disease complicating the pregnancy. The study aims to find out the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease among cardiac disease patients in a tertiary care hospital. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 41 women with cardiac disease who delivered babies at Chitwan Medical College from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2019, after taking ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee. A convenient sampling method was used. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used for data analysis. Point estimate at 95% Confidence Interval was calculated along with frequency and proportion for binary data. RESULTS: Among 41 pregnant women with cardiac disease, 32 (78%) (95% Confidence Interval = 65.32-90.68) had rheumatic heart disease. The mean age of the affected pregnant women was 24.9±4.49 years. Out of 32 patients with rheumatic heart disease, postpartum haemorrhage was the most common maternal complication 5 (15.6%) followed by hypertension 4 (9.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Rheumatic Heart Disease was highly common among pregnant women with cardiac disease.

We compared the validity of pancytopenia, the formol-gel test (FGT), the indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT), the direct agglutination test (DAT), and the rK39 dipstick test as diagnostic criteria for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Nepal. Between September 2000 and January 2002, 310 clinical suspects had a bone marrow aspirate, and if negative, a spleen aspirate smear examined for Leishmania donovani. Sensitivity and specificity of all tests were determined compared with parasitology and by latent class analysis (LCA). Compared with parasitology, the sensitivities of the other tests were as follows: pancytopenia = 16.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 11.3-22.5%), FGT = 39.9% (95% CI = 32.7-47.4%), IFAT = 28.4% (95% CI = 22.0-35.5%), DAT = 95.1% (95% CI = 90.8-97.7%), and the rK39 dipstick test = 87.4% (95% CI = 81.7-91.9%). Sensitivity estimates obtained by LCA were similar, but specificity estimates were substantially higher (DAT = 93.7% versus 77.8%; rK39 dipstick test = 93.1% versus 77.0%). The DAT or the rK39 dipstick test can replace parasitology as the basis of a decision to treat VL in Nepalese peripheral health services.
