To assess the value of the environmental benefits of the Sulphur Emission regulation (SECA) that came into force in 2015, changes in depositions of SOx and NOx from ship exhaust gas emissions were modelled and monetized for the Baltic Sea region for the years 2014 and 2016. During this period, the total deposition of SOx in the study area decreased by 7.3%. The decrease in ship-originated SOx deposition from 38 kt to 3.4 kt (by over 88%) was translated into a monetary value for the ecosystem impacts of nearly 130 million USD, according to the EcoValue08 model. This is less than the modelled health benefits, but it is not insignificant. For NOx, there was no decreasing trend. The exceedance of the critical loads of SOx and NOx was also estimated. The effect of Baltic shipping on the exceedance of critical loads of acidification after SECA is very small, but Baltic shipping still has a considerable effect on the exceedance of critical loads for eutrophication.

The presence of poorly sited wind farms raises concerns for wildlife, including birds of prey. Therefore, there is a need to extend the knowledge of the potential human-wildlife conflicts associated with wind energy. Here, we report on the movements and habitat use of post-fledging satellite-tagged white-tailed eagles in Finland, where wind-energy development is expected to increase in the near future. In particular, we examine the probability of a fledgling approaching a hypothetical turbine that is placed at different distances from the nest. We found that this probability is high at short distances but considerably decreases with increasing distances to the nest. A utilisation-availability analysis showed that the coast was the preferred habitat. We argue that avoiding construction between active nests and the shoreline, as well as adopting the currently 2-km buffer zone for turbine deployment, can avoid or minimise potential impacts on post-fledging white-tailed eagles.

RESUMEN

Scenarios for shipping traffic in the Gulf of Bothnia (GoB) by 2030 are described in order to identify the main factors that should be taken into account when preparing a Maritime Spatial Plan (MSP) for the area. The application of future research methodology to planning of marine areas was also assessed. The methods include applying existing large scale quantitative scenarios for maritime traffic in the GoB and using real-time Delphi in which an expert group discussed different factors contributing to future maritime traffic in the GoB to find out the probability and significance of the factors having an impact on maritime traffic. MSP was tested on transnational scale in the Bothnian sea area as a pilot project.

Cyanobacteria synthesize several types of bioactive secondary metabolites. Anabaena strain 90 produces three types of bioactive peptides, microcystins (inhibitors of protein phosphatases 1 and 2A), anabaenopeptilides, and anabaenopeptins (serine protease inhibitors). To investigate the role of the anabaenopeptilides in Anabaena, wild-type strain 90 (WT) and its anabaenopeptilide deficient mutant (MU) were cultured with various light and phosphate levels to evaluate the effects and coeffects of these growth factors on the concentrations of the three classes of peptides and the growth characteristics. WT and MU grew in comparable ways under the different growth conditions. The total peptide concentration in WT was significantly higher than that in MU (2.5 and 1.4 microg/mg [dry weight], respectively). Interestingly, the average concentration of anabaenopeptins was significantly higher in MU than in WT (0.59 and 0.24 microg/mg [dry weight], respectively). The concentration of microcystins was slightly but not statistically significantly higher in MU than in WT (1.0 and 0.86 microg/mg [dry weight], respectively). In WT, the highest peptide concentrations were usually found after 13 days in cultures grown at medium light intensities (23 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) and with the highest phosphate concentrations (2,600 microg liter(-1)). In MU, the highest peptide concentrations were found in 13-day-old cultures grown at medium light intensities (23 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) and with phosphate concentrations greater than 100 microg liter(-1). The higher concentrations of anabaenopeptins in MU may compensate for the absence of anabaenopeptilides. These findings clearly indicate that these compounds may have some linked function in the producer organism, the nature of which remains to be discovered.

The coexistence of Daphnia cucullata × galeata hybrids with the parental species D. galeata and D. cucullata was investigated by measuring areas and mesh sizes of filtering structures of these herbivorous zooplankton taxa cultivated at low and high food concentrations. The clearance rates and somatic growth rates were also determined. When reared at low food concentration, all taxa had larger filtering areas. Larger filtering areas also resulted in higher clearance rates. Differences between taxa in both filtering area and clearance rate were caused mainly by interspecific size differences. Hybrids had the largest absolute mesh sizes, and the parental species had smaller mesh sizes. Hybrids also showed heterosis in somatic growth rate at high food concentration. The observed taxon-specific differences in mesh size and somatic growth rate contribute to resource partitioning between the taxa and thus to their successful coexistence in lakes.
