RESUMEN

Increased plasma concentrations of glucagon (hyperglucagonemia) are reported in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and are considered a diabetogenic risk factor. Emerging evidence suggests that hepatic steatosis in obesity is causing a condition of resistance toward glucagon's effects on amino acid metabolism, resulting in an amino acid-induced hyperglucagonemia. We investigated the presence of hyperglucagonemia in individuals with biopsy-verified metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and whether body mass index (BMI), T2D, hepatic steatosis, and/or fibrosis contribute to this relationship. To dissect potential mechanisms, we also determined hepatic gene expression related to amino acid transport and catabolism. Individuals with MASLD had hyperglucagonemia {controls (n = 74) vs. MASLD (n = 106); median [Q1, Q3]; 4 [3, 7] vs. 8 [6, 13] pM), P < 0.0001} and were glucagon resistant (assessed by the glucagon-alanine index) {1.3 [0.9, 2.1] vs. 3.3 [2.1, 5.3] pM·mM, P < 0.0001}. These changes were associated with hepatic steatosis (P < 0.001, R2 > 0.25) independently of BMI, sex, age, and T2D. Plasma levels of glucagon were similar in individuals with MASLD when stratified on T2D status {MASLD-T2D (n = 52) vs. MASLD + T2D (n = 54); 8 [6, 11] vs. 8 [6, 13] pM, P = 0.34} and hepatic fibrosis {MASLD + F0 (n = 25) vs. MASLD + F1-F3 (n = 67); 8.4 [7.0, 13.3] vs. 7.9 [5.2, 11.6] pM, P = 0.43}. Obesity (BMI = 30 kg/m2) did not alter glucagon levels (P = 0.65) within groups (control/MASLD). The mRNA expression of proteins involved in amino acid transport and catabolism was downregulated in MASLD. Thus, relative hyperglucagonemia is present in individuals with biopsy-verified MASLD, and hepatic steatosis partially drives hyperglucagonemia and glucagon resistance, irrespective of T2D, BMI, and hepatic fibrosis.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) present with increased plasma levels of glucagon (hyperglucagonemia), irrespective of body mass index (BMI) and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, MASLD and the resultant hyperglucagonemia may act as a diabetogenic risk factor. Notably, hepatic steatosis was a significant contributor to the hyperglucagonemia in MASLD, potentially unveiling a pathway for the hyperglucagonemia in some patients with type 2 diabetes.

Autoimmune liver diseases are associated with an increased risk of diabetes, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the glucose-regulatory disturbances in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH, n = 19), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC, n = 15), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC, n = 6). Healthy individuals (n = 24) and patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, n = 18) were included as controls. Blood samples were collected during a 120-min oral glucose tolerance test. We measured the concentrations of glucose, C-peptide, insulin, glucagon, and the two incretin hormones, glucose insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). We calculated the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), whole body insulin resistance (Matsuda index), insulin clearance, and insulinogenic index. All patient groups had increased fasting plasma glucose and impaired glucose responses compared with healthy controls. Beta-cell secretion was increased in AIH, PBC, and MASLD but not in PSC. Patients with AIH and MASLD had hyperglucagonemia and hepatic, as well as peripheral, insulin resistance and decreased insulin clearance, resulting in hyperinsulinemia. Patients with autoimmune liver disease had an increased GIP response, and those with AIH or PBC had an increased GLP-1 response. Our data demonstrate that the mechanism underlying glucose disturbances in patients with autoimmune liver disease differs from that underlying MASLD, including compensatory incretin responses in patients with autoimmune liver disease. Our results suggest that glucose disturbances are present at an early stage of the disease.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Patients with autoimmune liver disease but without overt diabetes display glucose disturbances early on in their disease course. We identified pathophysiological traits specific to these patients including altered incretin responses.

Water scarcity poses a significant global challenge, particularly in developing nations like Iran. Consequently, there is a pressing requirement for ongoing monitoring and prediction of water quality, utilizing advanced techniques characterized by low implementation costs, shorter timeframes, and high accuracy. In the present study, the investigation and forecasting of the monthly time series of a single-variable river water quality index have been addressed using ten water quality parameters. Daily monitoring data from four stations in the Dez River from 2010 to 2020 have been utilized to obtain the river water quality index value from the dataset. The Shannon entropy method has been employed to assign weights to each water quality parameter. Utilizing the integrated autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, which ranks among the most extensively employed models for time series forecasting, and five deep learning models including Simple_RNN, LSTM, CNN, GRU, and MLP, the water quality index for the following year is predicted. The performance of the prediction models is evaluated using RMSE, MAE, MSE, and MAPE as evaluation metrics. The results indicate that the ARIMA model performs worse than the deep learning models, with the MSE, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE values for this model being 81.66, 9.037, 6.376, and 6.749, respectively. The deep learning models show results close to each other, demonstrating similar statistical index values. The outcomes of this study assist relevant decision-makers in planning and implementing necessary actions to enhance water quality, particularly freshwater resources in rivers.

When healthy women undergo caesarean section (CS) under sub arachnoid anaesthesia, transient electrocardiographic changes, such as ST-segment depression and T-wave abnormalities, are observed. During an elective caesarean section under sub arachnoid anaesthesia, about one-third of healthy parturient experience chest pain and ECG changes suggestive of myocardial ischemia. To assess the ST-segment and Rate Pressure Product changes with chest pain in patients with elective caesarean section under subarachnoid block. The Department of Anesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh was the site of this prospective observational study. The study included 86 healthy women between the ages of 20 and 35 who needed an elective caesarean section under a single shot sub arachnoid block and who visited the Department of Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Intensive Care Medicine at BSMMU in Shahbagh, Dhaka from January 2019 to June 2019. In comparison to the no chest pain group, ST-segment changes among the chest pain group at delivery, 5 minute, 10 minute after delivery and at the end of the surgery were highly significant (p=0.001). Comparatively, Rate Pressure Product changes were found to be significantly higher in the group with chest pain than in the group without chest pain (p=0.001). It is concluded that there is a substantial association of chest pain with rate pressure product and ST-segment changes after subarachroid block in caesarean section.

When performing infra-umbilical procedures, caudal epidural analgesia with bupivacaine is frequently used to provide both intra- and post-operative analgesia. Dexmedetomidine, an alpha 2 agonistsare extensively used in neuraxial blocks and peripheral nerve blocks to prolong the action of bupivacaine. To find out the effects of dexmedetomidine as an adjuvant to bupivacaine for caudal analgesia in children undergoing infra-umbilical surgery. This was a randomized, controlled double-blinded prospective observational study and was performed from July 2019 to December 2019. A total of 60 (Sixty) patients with different infra-umbilical surgical problems underwent different procedure under caudal anaesthesia in different operation theatre in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka were enrolled in this study. Elaborate personal history, meticulous clinical examinations and relevant laboratory investigations was done. Post-operative adverse effects also were monitored. All information from history of illness, clinical, laboratory findings, duration of analgesia and post-operative adverse effects were recorded in a preformed data sheet (Appendix-I) and statistical analysis was done by SPSS 22.0. Mean age of the children in Group A (dexmedetomidine + bupivacaine) was 5.50±2.61 years and in Group B (bupivacaine) was 5.66±2.75. Mean weight of the children in Group A was 19.22±8.58 kg and in Group B was 19.70±8.94 kg in this study. Mean duration of anaesthesia was 27.5±6.5 minute in Group A and 28.5±5.5 minute in Group B. The mean duration of analgesia was 4.32±0.54 hours for Group A and 2.12±0.32 hours in Group B. In Group A, 46.7% patients required 1 and 3.3% required 2 rescue analgesic but in Group B, 43.3% patients required single rescue analgesic and 33.3% required two rescue analgesics (p<0.05). In Group A, 6.7% patients had nausea/ vomiting and in Group B, 16.7% patients had nausea/ vomiting (p>0.05). It can be concluded that dexmedetomidine with bupivacaine for caudal analgesia in infra-umbilical surgery significantly prolongs the duration of postoperative analgesia when compared to bupivacaine alone without any side-effects.

Changes in land use due to urbanization, industrialization, and agriculture will adversely affect water quality at all scales. This study examined the possible effects of future land use on the water quality of the Dez River located in Iran. The QUAL2Kw dynamic model was used to simulate the water quality of the Dez River. Data and information available in July 2019 and 2013 were used for calibration and validation. According to the comparison of the RMSE, RMSE%, and percent bias error indices for the model during the calibration and validation period, the QUAL2Kw model of Dez River had high accuracy with acceptable values of errors. The land use changes in the Dez river basin were modeled and predicted by the LCM model after simulating water quality. The images from Landsat 8/OLI were used for 2013, 2016, and 2019, respectively. Based on the accurate evaluation of classified images, Kappa coefficients for 2013, 2016, and 2019 were 88.19, 87.46, and 89.91, respectively. Modeling land use and land cover changes was conducted to predict 2030. As a result of the study, agricultural and built-up areas and water bodies will increase in 2030. The possible effects of land use changes in 2030 on river water quality were examined as a final step. Based on the results of the water quality simulation in 2030, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and NO3 parameters exceeded the maximum permissible level of drinking standard. This study recommends frequent water quality monitoring and LULC planning and management to reduce pollution in river basins.

This case description reports an adult dog with multiple rib fractures that was initially suspected to be the victim of non-accidental trauma, but eventually was diagnosed with severe chronic interstitial nephritis and renal secondary hyperparathyroidism leading to fibrous osteodystrophy and multiple pathological fractures. The importance of the specific expertise of a dedicated expert panel on animal abuse is discussed. This case illustrates the significance of the identification of normal, pathological, and breed-related variations within an animal in addition to forensic expertise, emphasizing that the presence of multidisciplinary teams in an expert panel on animal abuse is crucial.

Impaired mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in liver tissue has been hypothesised to contribute to the development of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). It is unknown whether OXPHOS capacities in human visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) associate with NAFLD severity and how hepatic OXPHOS responds to improvement in NAFLD. In biopsies sampled from 62 patients with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery and nine control subjects without obesity we demonstrate that OXPHOS is reduced in VAT and SAT while increased in the liver in patients with obesity when compared with control subjects without obesity, but this was independent of NAFLD severity. In repeat liver biopsy sampling in 21 patients with obesity 12 months after bariatric surgery we found increased hepatic OXPHOS capacity and mitochondrial DNA/nuclear DNA content compared with baseline. In this work we show that obesity has an opposing association with mitochondrial respiration in adipose- and liver tissue with no overall association with NAFLD severity, however, bariatric surgery increases hepatic OXPHOS and mitochondrial biogenesis.

Upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are well-known for their capacity to convert near-infrared light into UV/visible light, benefitting various applications where light triggering is required. At the nanoscale, loss of luminescence intensity is observed and thus, a decrease in photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), usually ascribed to surface quenching. We evaluate this by measuring the PLQY of NaGdF4:Er3+,Yb3+ UCNPs as a function of size (ca. 15 to 100 nm) and shape (spheres, cubes, hexagons). Our results show that the PLQY of α-phase NaGdF4 Er3+,Yb3+ surpasses that of ß-NaGdF4 for sizes below 20 nm, an observation related to distortion of the crystal lattice when the UCNPs become smaller. The present study also underlines that particle shape must not be neglected as a relevant parameter for PLQY. In fact, based on a mathematical nucleus/hull volumetric model, shape was found to be particularly relevant in the 20 to 60 nm size range of the investigated UCNPs.

BACKGROUND: Whether all patients will require an opioid prescription after cardiac surgery is unknown. We performed a multicenter analysis to identify patient predictors of not receiving an opioid prescription at the time of discharge home after cardiac surgery. METHODS: Opioid-naïve patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting and/or valve surgery through a sternotomy at 10 centers from January to December 2019 were identified retrospectively from a prospectively maintained data set. Opioid-naïve was defined as not taking opioids at the time of admission. The primary outcome was discharge without an opioid prescription. Mixed-effects logistic regression was performed to identify predictors of discharge without an opioid prescription, and postdischarge opioid prescribing was monitored to assess patient tolerance of discharge without an opioid prescription. RESULTS: Among 1924 eligible opioid-naïve patients, mean age was 64 ± 11 years, and 25% were women. In total, 28% of all patients were discharged without an opioid prescription. On multivariable analysis, older age, longer length of hospital stay, and undergoing surgery during the last 3 months of the study were independent predictors of discharge without an opioid prescription, whereas depression, non-Black and non-White race, and using more opioid pills on the day before discharge were independent predictors of receiving an opioid prescription. Among patients discharged without an opioid prescription, 1.8% (10 of 547) were subsequently prescribed an opioid. CONCLUSIONS: Discharging select patients without an opioid prescription after cardiac surgery appears well tolerated, with a low incidence of postdischarge opioid prescriptions. Increasing the number of patients discharged without an opioid prescription may be an area for quality improvement.

The electronic band structure of complex nanostructured semiconductors has a considerable effect on the final electronic and optical properties of the material and, ultimately, on the functionality of the devices incorporating them. Valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) provides the possibility of measuring this property of semiconductors with high spatial resolution. However, it still represents a challenge for narrow-bandgap semiconductors, since an electron beam with low energy spread is required. Here we demonstrate that by means of monochromated VEELS we can study the electronic band structure of narrow-gap materials GaSb and InAs in the form of heterostructured nanowires, with bandgap values down to 0.5 eV, especially important for newly developed structures with unknown bandgaps. Using complex heterostructured InAs-GaSb nanowires, we determine a bandgap value of 0.54 eV for wurtzite InAs. Moreover, we directly compare the bandgaps of wurtzite and zinc blende polytypes of GaSb in a single nanostructure, measured here as 0.84 and 0.75 eV, respectively. This allows us to solve an existing controversy in the band alignment between these structures arising from theoretical predictions. The findings demonstrate the potential of monochromated VEELS to provide a better understanding of the band alignment at the heterointerfaces of narrow-bandgap complex nanostructured materials with high spatial resolution. This is especially important for semiconductor device applications where even the slightest variations of the electronic band structure at the nanoscale can play a crucial role in their functionality.

Membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzers offer a means to scale up CO2-to-ethylene electroconversion using renewable electricity and close the anthropogenic carbon cycle. To date, excessive CO2 coverage at the catalyst surface with limited active sites in MEA systems interferes with the carbon-carbon coupling reaction, diminishing ethylene production. With the aid of density functional theory calculations and spectroscopic analysis, here we report an oxide modulation strategy in which we introduce silica on Cu to create active Cu-SiOx interface sites, decreasing the formation energies of OCOH* and OCCOH*-key intermediates along the pathway to ethylene formation. We then synthesize the Cu-SiOx catalysts using one-pot coprecipitation and integrate the catalyst in a MEA electrolyzer. By tuning the CO2 concentration, the Cu-SiOx catalyst based MEA electrolyzer shows high ethylene Faradaic efficiencies of up to 65% at high ethylene current densities of up to 215 mA cm-2; and features sustained operation over 50 h.

Large-scale deployment of thin-film photovoltaics will be facilitated through earth-abundant components. Herein, selective area epitaxy and lateral overgrowth epitaxy are explored for the growth of zinc phosphide (Zn3P2), a promising earth-abundant absorber. The ideal growth conditions are elucidated, and the nucleation of single-crystal nanopyramids that subsequently evolve towards coalesced thin-films is demonstrated. The zinc phosphide pyramids exhibit room temperature bandgap luminescence at 1.53 eV, indicating a high-quality material. The electrical properties of zinc phosphide and the junction with the substrate are assessed by conductive atomic force microscopy on n-type, p-type and intrinsic substrates. The measurements are consistent with the p-type characteristic of zinc phosphide. Overall, this constitutes a new, and transferrable, approach for the controlled and tunable growth of high-quality zinc phosphide, a step forward in the quest for earth-abundant photovoltaics.

BACKGROUND: Despite the risk of new persistent opioid use after cardiac surgery, postdischarge opioid use has not been quantified and evidence-based prescribing guidelines have not been established. METHODS: Opioid-naive patients undergoing primary cardiac surgery via median sternotomy between January and December 2019 at 10 hospitals participating in a statewide collaborative were selected. Clinical data were linked to patient-reported outcomes collected at 30-day follow-up. An opioid prescribing recommendation stratified by inpatient opioid use on the day before discharge (0, 1-3, or ≥4 pills) was implemented in July 2019. Interrupted time-series analyses were performed for prescription size and postdischarge opioid use before (January to June) and after (July to December) guideline implementation. RESULTS: Among 1495 patients (729 prerecommendation and 766 postrecommendation), median prescription size decreased from 20 pills to 12 pills after recommendation release (P < .001), while opioid use decreased from 3 pills to 0 pills (P < .001). Change in prescription size over time was +0.6 pill/month before and -0.8 pill/month after the recommendation (difference = -1.4 pills/month; P = .036). Change in patient use was +0.6 pill/month before and -0.4 pill/month after the recommendation (difference = -1.0 pills/month; P = .017). Pain levels during the first week after surgery and refills were unchanged. Patients using 0 pills before discharge (n = 710) were prescribed a median of 0 pills and used 0 pills, while those using 1 to 3 pills (n = 536) were prescribed 20 pills and used 7 pills, and those using greater than or equal to 4 pills (n = 249) were prescribed 32 pills and used 24 pills. CONCLUSIONS: An opioid prescribing recommendation was effective, and prescribing after cardiac surgery should be guided by inpatient use.

Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) nanowires constitute prospective building blocks for next generation solar cells due to the combination of suitable optoelectronic properties and an abundance of the constituting elements in the Earth's crust. The generation of periodic superstructures along the nanowire axis could provide an additional mechanism to tune their functional properties. Here we present the vapour-liquid-solid growth of zinc phosphide superlattices driven by periodic heterotwins. This uncommon planar defect involves the exchange of Zn by In at the twinning boundary. We find that the zigzag superlattice formation is driven by reduction of the total surface energy of the liquid droplet. The chemical variation across the heterotwin does not affect the homogeneity of the optical properties, as measured by cathodoluminescence. The basic understanding provided here brings new propsects on the use of II-V semiconductors in nanowire technology.

When sawing bone for medical or medico-legal procedures, fine, airborne dust is produced (aerosols) that can pose a health hazard when inhaled. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of saw blade frequency and contact load, bone condition, test environment, and saw blade type, on the production of aerosol particles. A custom test setup was designed, manufactured and used in 8 bone sawing experiments, using a particle counter to determine the production of aerosol particles while varying the 5 chosen parameters. The number of counted particles was highest with higher saw blade frequencies, lower saw blade contact loads, in dry completely skeletonized bone compared to fresh bone, and using an electrical oscillating saw compared to hand-sawing. Under all conditions, the high amount of aerosol counted posed potential health risks. The ventilation system that we tested was adequate in removing the produced particles, but these high-tech systems are not always available in developing countries or emergency situations. The production of aerosols can be reduced by optimizing the sawing parameters. However, even the lowest number of aerosol particles counted during the current study was high enough to cause potential health risks to practitioners. Safety precautions should be taken, such as external ventilation, proper breathing gear, and adequate protocols, to truly minimize the risk in all bone sawing scenarios.

The lack of mirror symmetry in binary semiconductor compounds turns them into polar materials, where two opposite orientations of the same crystallographic direction are possible. Interestingly, their physical properties (e.g., electronic or photonic) and morphological features (e.g., shape, growth direction, and so forth) also strongly depend on the polarity. It has been observed that nanoscale materials tend to grow with a specific polarity, which can eventually be reversed for very specific growth conditions. In addition, polar-directed growth affects the defect density and topology and might induce eventually the formation of undesirable polarity inversion domains in the nanostructure, which in turn will affect the photonic and electronic final device performance. Here, we present a review on the polarity-driven growth mechanism at the nanoscale, combining our latest investigation with an overview of the available literature highlighting suitable future possibilities of polarity engineering of semiconductor nanostructures. The present study has been extended over a wide range of semiconductor compounds, covering the most commonly synthesized III-V (GaN, GaP, GaAs, GaSb, InN, InP, InAs, InSb) and II-VI (ZnO, ZnTe, CdS, CdSe, CdTe) nanowires and other free-standing nanostructures (tripods, tetrapods, belts, and membranes). This systematic study allowed us to explore the parameters that may induce polarity-dependent and polarity-driven growth mechanisms, as well as the polarity-related consequences on the physical properties of the nanostructures.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) offers an ample range of complementary techniques which are able to provide essential information about the physical, chemical and structural properties of materials at the atomic scale, and hence makes a vast impact on our understanding of materials science, especially in the field of semiconductor one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. Recent advancements in TEM instrumentation, in particular aberration correction and monochromation, have enabled pioneering experiments in complex nanostructure material systems. This review aims to address these understandings through the applications of the methodology for semiconductor nanostructures. It points out various electron microscopy techniques, in particular scanning TEM (STEM) imaging and spectroscopy techniques, with their already-employed or potential applications on 1D nanostructured semiconductors. We keep the main focus of the paper on the electronic and optoelectronic properties of such semiconductors, and avoid expanding it further. In the first part of the review, we give a brief introduction to each of the STEM-based techniques, without detailed elaboration, and mention the recent technological and conceptual developments which lead to novel characterization methodologies. For further reading, we refer the audience to a handful of papers in the literature. In the second part, we highlight the recent examples of application of the STEM methodology on the 1D nanostructure semiconductor materials, especially III-V, II-V, and group IV bare and heterostructure systems. The aim is to address the research questions on various physical properties and introduce solutions by choosing the appropriate technique that can answer the questions. Potential applications will also be discussed, the ones that have already been used for bulk and 2D materials, and have shown great potential and promise for 1D nanostructure semiconductors.

Using AlSb as the model system, we demonstrate that kinetic limitations can lead to the preferential growth of wurtzite (WZ) AlSb shells rather than the thermodynamically stable zinc-blende (ZB) AlSb and that the WZ and ZB relative thickness can be tuned by a careful control of the deposition parameters. We report selective heteroepitaxial radial growth of AlSb deposited by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) on InAs nanowire core templates with engineered lengths of axial WZ and ZB segments. AlSb shell thickness, crystal phase, nanostructure, and composition are investigated as a function of the shell growth temperature, Ts, using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron tomography, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. We find that ZB- and WZ-structured AlSb shells grow heteroepitaxially around the ZB and WZ segments of the InAs core, respectively. Surprisingly, at 390 < Ts < 450 °C, the WZ-AlSb shells are thicker than the ZB-AlSb shells, and their thickness increases with decreasing Ts. In comparison, the ZB-AlSb shell thicknesses increase slightly with increasing Ts. We find that the increased thickness of the WZ-AlSb shells is due to the formation and enhanced deposition on {112̅0} facets rather than on the more commonly grown {101̅0} sidewall facets. Overall, these results, which are in direct contrast with previous reports suggesting that heteroepitaxial radial growth of III-antimonides is always favored on the ZB-structure facets, indicate that the growth of WZ-AlSb is preferred over the thermodynamically stable ZB-AlSb at lower growth temperatures. We attribute this behavior to kinetic limitations of MOVPE of AlSb on ZB and WZ phases of InAs.

When sawing during autopsies on human remains, fine dust is produced, which consists of particles of sizes that may fall within the human respirable range, and can act as vectors for pathogens. The goal of this study was to explore the potential effects of saw blade frequency and saw blade contact load on the number and size of airborne bone particles produced. The methodology involved the use of an oscillating saw with variable saw blade frequencies and different saw blade contact loads on dry human femora. Released airborne particles were counted per diameter by a particle counter inside a closed and controlled environment. Results corroborated with the hypotheses: higher frequencies or lower contact loads resulted in higher numbers of aerosol particles produced. However, it was found that even in the best-case scenario tested on dry bone, the number of aerosol particles produced was still high enough to provide a potential health risk to the forensic practitioners. Protective breathing gear such as respirators and biosafety protocols are recommended to be put into practice to protect forensic practitioners from acquiring pathologies, or from other biological hazards when performing autopsies.
