The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (DS) can have a significant impact on functionality. The purpose was to describe 22q11.2DS children with functioning from a biopsychosocial perspective, focusing on the impact of children's health condition from domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional case series study with seven 22q11.2DS children. A questionnaire with an ICF checklist for 22q11.2DS was completed using a structured interview. The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) was used to determine the Intelligence Quotient (IQ). RESULTS: Seven participants from 7 to 12 years old, presented some level of IQ impairment. It was observed that 22q11.2DS children experience significant intellectual, cognitive, and speech impairments across ICF Body Function domains. Impairments related to nose and pharynx were found in only one patient. The most relevant categories considered limitations in the Activity and Participation components pertained to producing nonverbal messages, communication, handling stress, and social interaction. Family, health professionals, and acquaintances were perceived as facilitators in the component Environmental Factors. CONCLUSION: The sample has its functioning affected by aspects that go beyond impairments in body structure and function. The organization of information from the perspective of the ICF is a different approach that helps clinical reasoning.

Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania braziliensis can either respond well or poorly to the treatment or heal spontaneously; It seems to be dependent on the parasite and/or host factors, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. We evaluated the in situ immune response in eighty-two active lesions from fifty-eight patients prior to treatment classified as early spontaneous regression (SRL-n = 14); treatment responders (GRL-n = 20); and non-responders (before first treatment/relapse, PRL1/PRL2-n = 24 each). Immunohistochemistry was used to identify cell/functional markers which were correlated with the clinical characteristics. PRL showed significant differences in lesion number/size, clinical evolution, and positive parasitological examinations when compared with the other groups. SRL presented a more efficient immune response than GRL and PRL, with higher IFN-γ/NOS2 and a lower percentage of macrophages, neutrophils, NK, B cells, and Ki-67+ cells. Compared to SRL, PRL had fewer CD4+ Tcells and more CD163+ macrophages. PRL1 had more CD68+ macrophages and Ki-67+ cells but less IFN-γ than GRL. PRL present a less efficient immune profile, which could explain the poor treatment response, while SRL had a more balanced immune response profile for lesion healing. Altogether, these evaluations suggest a differentiated profile of the organization of the inflammatory process for lesions of different tegumentary leishmaniasis evolution.

BACKGROUND: The number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in prisons is higher than that in the general population and has been reported as the most common cause of death in prisons. This study evaluated the delay in the diagnosis and treatment of TB in Brazilian prisons. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between 2007 and 2015 using data from the five largest male prisons in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. TB case data was collected from the National Database of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN), GAL-LACEN, and prison medical records. The following variables were recorded: prison, year of diagnosis, age, race, education, HIV status, smoking status, comorbidities, number of symptoms, percentage of cures, delay in diagnosis, patient delay, provider delay, laboratory delay, and delay in treatment. Descriptive statistics were used for the variables of interest. RESULTS: A total of 362 pulmonary TB cases were identified. The average time between the first symptom and reporting of data was 94 days. The mean time between symptom onset and laboratory diagnosis was 91 days. The average time from symptom onset to first consultation was 80 days. The time between diagnosis and treatment initiation was 5 days. CONCLUSIONS: Delays were significant between reporting of the first symptoms and diagnosis and significantly smaller from the time between notification and start of treatment. Control strategies should be implemented to diagnose cases through active screening, to avoid delays in diagnosis and treatment, and to reduce TB transmission.

The in vitro feeding of ticks facilitates the conduction of studies involving the intrinsic vector-pathogen relationship, susceptibility tests, and resistance to acaricides, in addition to mimicking the use of experimental hosts. The objective of this study was to establish an in vitro feeding system using silicone membranes to supply various diets to the species Ornithodoros rostratus. Each experimental group included 130 first-instar O. rostratus nymphs. The groups were divided according to the diet provided: citrated rabbit blood, citrated bovine blood, bovine blood with antibiotics, and defibrinated bovine blood. The control group was fed directly on rabbits. Ticks were weighed before and after the feeding and monitored individually according to their biological parameters. The results of the experiment demonstrated that the proposed system was efficient in terms of fixation stimulus and satisfactory in terms of tick engorgement, which would allow the maintenance of O. rostratus colonies by using artificial feeding through silicone membranes. All diets provided were efficient for the maintenance of colonies, but the ticks that received citrated rabbit blood displayed similar biological parameters to those observed under in vivo feeding conditions.

Acquired hip dysplasia has been described in children with cerebral palsy (CP); periodic surveillance is recommended in this population to prevent hip displacement and dislocation. Children with congenital zika syndrome (CZS) may present a spectrum of neurological impairments with changes in tonus, posture, and movement similar to children with CP. However, the relationship between CZS and hip dysplasia has not been characterized. In this prospective cohort study, we aimed to describe the occurrence of hip dysplasia in patients with CZS. Sixty-four children with CZS from 6 to 48 months of age were included and followed at a tertiary referral center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with periodic radiologic and clinical hip assessments. Twenty-six (41%) patients were diagnosed with hip dysplasia during follow-up; mean age at diagnosis was 23 months. According to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), 58 (91%) patients had severe impairment (GMFCS IV and V) at the first evaluation. All patients with progression to hip dysplasia had microcephaly and were classified as GMFCS IV or V. Pain and functional limitation were reported by 22 (84%) caregivers of children with hip dysplasia. All patients were referred to specialized orthopedic care; eight (31%) underwent surgical treatment during follow-up. Our findings highlight the importance of implementing a hip surveillance program and improving access to orthopedic treatment for children with CZS in order to decrease the chances of dysplasia-related complications and improve quality of life.

RESUMEN

A velocidade de expansão dos casos de COVID-19 exige a organização de estratégias de vigilância local para planejar ações de enfrentamento. Trata-se de relato de experiência do Programa de Educação para o Trabalho em Saúde Interprofissionalidade da Universidade Federal do Oeste da Bahia na elaboração de Sala de Situação em Saúde da COVID-19 com quatro Equipes de Saúde da Família parceiras do programa em município de referência macrorregional do oeste baiano. A SDSS foi construída de forma remota, precedida de discussão coletiva referente ao conceito, aplicações, condicionantes histórico-político-institucionais, qualidade dos registros e dados em saúde, dimensões para implantação e desafios. Em sequência, foram coletadas informações dos usuários presentes nas fichas de notificação dos casos suspeitos e confirmados de COVID-19 das EqSF, registrados no período entre março e agosto de 2020, o que possibilitou a construção de banco de dados com apoio dos profissionais e gerentes das EqSF por meio de formulário eletrônico. Os dados foram apresentados e debatidos com diferentes atores da Universidade, da gestão e da assistência, em análise comparativa dos quatros territórios adscritos. Destacaram-se como desafios as fragilidades no registro das informações pelas EqSF nas fichas de notificação e o grande volume de informações a serem transferidas do formato manual para o banco de dados eletrônico. A SDSS teve como potencialidades a troca coletiva de saberes e vivências, o reconhecimento dos nós críticos do processo de trabalho e da necessidade de reorganização das ações, revelando-se como potente estratégia de vigilância, planejamento e gestão da situação local da COVID-19.

Understanding functioning and disabilities in children with Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is essential for health planning. We describe disabilities present in children with CZS followed in a reference hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, based on the biopsychosocial model of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). This was a cohort study of children >3 years of age with CZS. Disability was characterized through outcomes related to ICF components assessed via clinical and motor development evaluations. Among 50 children, with a median age of 40 months, 47 (94%) presented with severe impairment and 46 (92%) had microcephaly. Damage to the head and neck was found in most children, with abnormal central nervous system imaging universally present. Most children had cognitive impairment (92%), muscle tone problems (90%), and speech deficits (94%). We found movement limitations in all categories but more pervasively (80−94%), in postural transfers and displacements. The main environmental factors identified in the ICF model were the use of products or substances for personal consumption and access to health services. Children with CZS have extremely high rates of disability beyond aged 3 years, particularly regarding motor activity. ICF-based models can contribute to the assessment of health domains.

This integrative review aims to identify the main flavonoids present in some species of the Myrtaceae family. Studies published between 2016 and 2022 were selected, specifically those which were fully available and written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, and which were related to the fruits araçá (Psidium cattleianum), cambuí (Myrciaria floribunda), gabiroba (Campomanesia xanthocarpa), jabuticaba (Plinia cauliflora), and jambolan (Syzygium cumini). Scientific studies were gathered and selected in Google Scholar, Scielo, and Science Direct indexed databases, out of which 14 were about araçá, 7 concerned cambuí, 4 were about gabiroba, 29 were related to jabuticaba, and 33 concerned jambolan, when we observed the pre-established inclusion criteria. Results showed that the anthocyanins, such as cyanidin, petunidin, malvidin, and delphinidin, were the mostly identified class of flavonoids in plants of the Myrtaceae family, mainly relating to the purple/reddish color of the evaluated fruits. Other compounds, such as catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, and rutin were also identified in different constituent fractions, such as leaves, peel, pulp, seeds, and in developed products, such as jams, desserts, wines, teas, and other beverages. It is also worth noting the positive health effects verified in these studies, such as anti-inflammatory qualities for jambolan, antidiabetic qualities for gabiroba, antioxidant qualities for araçá, and cardioprotective actions for jabuticaba, which are related to the presence of these phytochemicals. Therefore, it is possible to point out that flavonoids are important compounds in the chemical constitution of the studied plants of the Myrtaceae family, with promising potential in the development of new products by the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries due to their bioactive properties.

Knowledge of how congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) impacts motor development of children longitudinally is important to guide management. The objective of the present study was to describe the evolution of gross motor function in children with CZS in a Rio de Janeiro hospital. In children with CZS without arthrogryposis or other congenital osteoarticular malformations who were followed in a prospective cohort study, motor performance was evaluated at two timepoints using the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and the Gross Motor Function Measurement test (GMFM-88). Among 74 children, at the baseline evaluation, the median age was 13 (8-24) months, and on follow-up, 28 (24-48) months. According to GMFCS at the second timepoint, 6 children were classified as mild, 11 as moderate, and 57 as severe. In the GMFM-88 assessment, children in the severe group had a median score of 10.05 in the baseline evaluation and a follow-up score of 12.40, the moderate group had median scores of 25.60 and 29.60, and the mild group had median scores of 82.60 and 91.00, respectively. Although a small developmental improvement was observed, the motor impairment of children was mainly consistent with severe cerebral palsy. Baseline motor function assessments were predictive of prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunctions are frequently found in the 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, being an aggravating factor in the impairment of social relationships and communication, strongly impacting the functionality of the individual. Increasing the knowledge regarding cognitive skills may provide contributions to the diagnostic process and the intervention planning. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the general, verbal, and non-verbal cognitive functioning of children and adolescents with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and case series study regarding 15 individuals between 7-18 years-old diagnosed with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. An assessment of the cognitive functions was performed using the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI). For data analysis we used a descriptive statistics analysis, having absolute frequencies for variables, and mean, median, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values for numerical variables. RESULTS: In the group analysis, we observed an important cognitive impairment degree. Most of the sampling (n=8; 53.33%) presented a considerably low total intelligence quotient score. Cases showing lower performances also presented greater difficulties regarding Visual Motor and Visuospatial coordination. Regarding the intelligence quotient representative punctuation in the WASI scale, the sample showed a large variability in the results (between 40 and 92 points), with the median total of 83. CONCLUSIONS: We observed important dysfunctions, cognitive difficulties, and intellectual, verbal, and non-verbal disabilities in the population studied. These findings indicate the need for an early intervention to assist not only the cognitive aspect, but also the socio-emotional development of children with the 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, aiming at their participation in society.


FUNDAMENTO: Disfunções cognitivas são frequentemente encontradas na Síndrome de Deleção 22q11.2, sendo um agravante no comprometimento das relações sociais e da comunicação, impactando fortemente na funcionalidade do indivíduo. O aumento do conhecimento sobre as habilidades cognitivas pode trazer contribuições no processo diagnóstico e no planejamento da intervenção. OBJETIVO: Estimar o funcionamento cognitivo geral, verbal e não verbal de crianças e adolescentes com Síndrome de Deleção 22q11.2. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal, descritivo, tipo série de casos, com 15 indivíduos entre 7-18 anos com diagnóstico da Síndrome de Deleção 22q11.2. A avaliação das habilidades cognitivas foi realizada com a Escala Wechsler Abreviada de Inteligência (WASI). Para análise dos dados, foi utilizada análise estatística descritiva, com frequências absolutas para variáveis, e média, mediana, desvio padrão, mínima e máximo para variáveis numéricas. RESULTADOS: Na análise do grupo, observou-se um importante grau de comprometimento cognitivo. A maior parte da amostra (n=8; 53,33%) mostrou quociente de inteligência total extremamente baixo. Os casos com desempenhos mais baixos apresentaram maiores dificuldades em relação às habilidades de coordenação visuomotora e visuoespacial. Em relação à pontuação representativa do quociente de inteligência na escala WASI, a amostra apresentou uma grande variabilidade de resultados (entre 40 a 92 pontos), com mediana total de 83 pontos. CONCLUSÕES: As dificuldades cognitivas encontradas indicam a necessidade de uma intervenção precoce para auxiliar não só no desenvolvimento cognitivo, mas socioemocional de crianças com a Síndrome de Deleção 22q11.2 visando sua participação na sociedade.

Little is known about the impact of congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure on growth in the first years of life. In this prospective cohort study,201 ZIKV antenatally-exposed children were followed at a tertiary referral center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eighty-seven were classified as congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) patients and 114 as not congenital Zika syndrome (NCZS); growth parameters were described and compared between groups and with WHO standard growth curves. Thirty-four (39%) newborns with CZS and seven (6%) NCZS were small for gestational age (p < 0.001). NCZS mean weight measures ranged from −0.45 ± 0.1 to 0.27 ± 0.2 standard deviations (SD) from the WHO growth curve median during follow-up, versus −1.84 ± 0.2 to −2.15 ± 0.2 SD for the CZS group (p < 0.001). Length mean z-scores varied from −0.3 ± 0.1 at 1 month to 0.17 ± 0.2 SD between 31 and 36 months in the NCZS group, versus −2.3 ± 0.3 to −2.0 ± 0.17 SD in the CZS group (p < 0.001). Weight/height (W/H) and BMI z-scores reached -1.45 ± 0.2 SD in CZS patients between 31 and 36 months, versus 0.23 ± 0.2 SD in the NCZS group (p < 0.01). Between 25 and 36 months of age, more than 50% of the 70 evaluated CZS children were below weight and height limits; 36 (37.1%) were below the W/H cut-off. Gastrostomy was performed in 23 (26%) children with CZS. During the first three years of life, CZS patients had severe and early growth deficits, while growth of NCZS children was normal by WHO standards.

Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is characterized by many impairments especially in the central nervous system, potentially compromising neurodevelopment and causing significant morbidity in affected children. The aim was to assess gross motor function in children with CZS. This was a cross-sectional investigation nested within a prospective cohort study of children with CZS based in a Brazilian referral hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Between March/2017 and February/2018, we performed gross motor function assessments using the Gross Motor Function Classification (GMFCS) and the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), estimating the mean and standard deviation of GMFM scores among GMFCS groups. The study sample included 72 children, with a median age of 13 months (7-25). Of these, 63 (87.5%) had severe motor impairment, 3 (4%) had moderate impairment, and 6 (8%) had mild impairment. The mean GMFM score for each group was respectively 11.6, 26.1, and 81.6, with statistically significant differences (p-value < 0.001). Severely affected children only achieved head control in the sitting posture when supported. Children with milder forms were able to develop walking skills.Conclusion: Most children with CZS have major motor disabilities and a poor prognosis. Better understanding of limitations and functionality in children with CZS can serve as a prognostic guide in their management. What is Known: • Severe motor impairment was present in 63 (87.5%) children with CZS. • The degree of neurological impairment was inversely associated with motor performance. What is New: • Microcephaly was more frequent among children with severe gross motor function impairment. • Children with CZS have major motor disabilities and a poor prognosis.

A Atenção Primária à Saúde apresenta-se como um setor de destaque para ações de Educação em Saúde, sobretudo nos momentos de sala de espera. O presente escrito trata-se de um relato de experiência que objetiva problematizar os momentos de Educação em Saúde nas salas de espera como espaços de produção de cuidado e trabalho interprofissional. As ações ocorreram em duas Unidades de Saúde da Família da cidade de Barreira, Bahia, no período de 1 ano com os acadêmicos dos cursos da saúde vinculados ao Programa de Educação para o Trabalho em Saúde Interprofissionalidade da Universidade Federal do Oeste da Bahia. A partir do diálogo dos discentes do programa com a equipe das unidades participantes, definiram-se temas que abordaram saúde da mulher e do homem, doenças crônicas, saúde mental, hábitos de vida, planejamento familiar, entre outros. Foram utilizadas metodologias como encenações teatrais, dinâmicas e rodas de conversa. Essas atividades não só possibilitaram encontros de saberes como também transformações na maneira de pensar a formação e o aprendizado. Percebeu-se que as atividades de extensão passaram a cumprir seu papel político em interface com o ensino e a pesquisa. Um dos grandes desafios enfrentados nas ações foi o compromisso com uma abordagem integral do sujeito. A Educação em Saúde, nas salas de espera, pode ser consolidada como uma prática de produção de cuidado em saúde. BACKGROUND: Treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) remains challenging since the drugs currently used are quite toxic, thus contributing to lethality unrelated to the disease itself but to adverse events (AE). The main objective was to evaluate different treatment regimens with meglumine antimoniate (MA), in a reference center in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODOLOGY: A historical cohort of 592 patients that underwent physical and laboratory examination were enrolled between 2000 and 2017. The outcome measures of effectiveness were epithelialization and complete healing of cutaneous lesions. AE were graded using a standardized scale. Three groups were evaluated: Standard regimen (SR): intramuscular (IM) MA 10-20 mg Sb5+/kg/day during 20 days (n = 46); Alternative regimen (AR): IM MA 5 mg Sb5+/kg/day during 30 days (n = 456); Intralesional route (IL): MA infiltration in the lesion(s) through subcutaneous injections (n = 90). Statistical analysis was performed through Fisher exact and Pearson Chi-square tests, Kruskal-Wallis, Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests. RESULTS: SR, AR and IL showed efficacy of 95.3%, 84.3% and 75.9%, with abandonment rate of 6.5%, 2.4% and 3.4%, respectively. IL patients had more comorbidities (58.9%; p = 0.001), were mostly over 50 years of age (55.6%), and had an evolution time longer than 2 months (65.6%; p = 0.02). Time for epithelialization and complete healing were similar in IL and IM MA groups (p = 0.9 and p = 0.5; respectively). Total AE and moderate to severe AE that frequently led to treatment interruption were more common in SR group, while AR and IL showed less toxicity. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: AR and IL showed less toxicity and may be good options especially in CL cases with comorbidities, although SR treatment was more effective. IL treatment was an effective and safe strategy, and it may be used as first therapy option as well as a rescue scheme in patients initially treated with other drugs.

Instrumentos de avaliação clínica foram criados a partir de experiências prévias de cuidados para outras condições crônicas complexas da infância, de modo a planejar e sistematizar ações. Contudo, é importante que tais instrumentos tenham validação externa e contemplem o atual conceito de saúde biopsicossocial. Uma interlocução com a Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde (CIF) poderia dar subsídio teórico e validação aos instrumentos criados. Objetivo: Identificar o conteúdo comum da CIF com o instrumento de avaliação clínica aplicado em população exposta ao vírus Zika em um ambulatório de doenças infecciosas em pediatria de um hospital de referência no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Métodos: A Ligação com a CIF foi realizada por dois revisores independentes, segundo a proposta de Cieza e colaboradores. O coeficiente Kappa foi utilizado para análise da concordância interobservadores. Resultados: O instrumento de avaliação clínica utilizado no ambulatório de referência é composto principalmente por categorias da CIF de estruturas do corpo (46,4%). Observou-se poucas categorias relacionadas aos fatores contextuais (13,1%). E, não foram encontrados itens relacionados às categorias de atividade e participação. Conclusão: A ferramenta de avaliação apresenta principalmente informações sobre as funções e estruturas do corpo, voltando-se a um olhar puramente restrito as funções fisiológicas e as estruturas anatômicas. A inexistência de categorias de atividade e participação pode comprometer a percepção das experiências vividas pelas crianças que foram expostas ao vírus Zika


The Zika epidemic and the emergence of a new health condition in Brazil, imposed a rapid organization on services to meet the current demand for care. Clinical assessment instruments were created, based on previous care experiences for other complex chronic conditions in order to plan and systematize actions. However, it is important that these instruments have external validation and include the current concept of health, biopsychosocial. An interlocution with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (CIF) could provide theoretical support and validation to the instruments created. Objective: To identify the common content among the clinical evaluation instrument applied to the population exposed to the Zika virus in a pediatric infectious disease outpatient clinic in a reference hospital in the State of Rio de Janeiro with the ICF. Methods: The link with the ICF was carried out by two independent reviewers, according to Cieza's proposal and the Kappa coefficient was used for interobserver analysis. Results: It was identified that the instrument is mainly composed of items of body structure (39; 46.4%). There were few categories related to contextual factors (11; 13.1%). And there were no items related to the categories of activity and participation. Conclusion: The assessment tool presents mainly domains of function and structure of the body, turning to a biomedical look. The lack of categories of activity and participation can compromise the perception of health status. A line of care in the light of the biopsychosocial model provides advantages for health services planning and actions

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the most typical and relevant categories of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) for patients with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. METHODS: Based on the Delphi technique an expert survey through e-mail was performed among health professionals' specialists in the 22q11.2DS. Data were collected in 2 rounds. Answers were analysed for the degree of consensus. RESULTS: 7 Experts recruited through e-mail distribution lists of professional organizations and personal networks participated in the study. Categories in all ICF components that were considered typical and/or relevant by at least 80% of the responders were added to a pilot ICF instrument for children with 22q11.2DS, with a total of 145 ICF categories. CONCLUSION: a list of ICF categories that are considered relevant and typical for 22q11.2DS condition by international experts was created. This is an important step towards identifying ICF Core Sets for chronic paediatric conditions in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Potentiation of neuromuscular blocking agents by local anesthetics has been described in various clinical and experimental studies. This study assessed the influence of epidural ropivacaine on pharmacodynamic characteristics of rocuronium. DESIGN: This was a prospective randomized clinical trial at the women's hospital, an university tertiary hospital in Brazil. Sixty-two patients underwent elective abdominal surgeries requiring general anesthesia. INTERVENTION: Patients were distributed into two groups: Group 1 (general anesthesia and epidural anesthesia) and Group 2 (general anesthesia). In Group 1, 0.2% ropivacaine at a dose of 40 mg (20 ml) was associated with 2 mg (2 ml) of morphine in a single epidural injection. The following parameters were assessed: clinical duration (DC25) and time for recovery of the train-of-four (TOF) 0.9 ratio (T4/T1 = 90%) after an initial 0.6 mg/kg dose of rocuronium. The primary outcomes were DC25 and TOF 0.9 ratio (T4/T1 = 90%). Secondary outcomes were total propofol and remifentanil consumption. RESULTS: Values were presented as median and interquartile range. The results for DC25 and TOF 0.9 of rocuronium were, respectively, 41.5 35.0-55.0 (25.0-63.0) in Group 1 and 44.0 37.0-51.0 (20.0-67.0) in Group 2 (P = 0.88); 88.0 67.0-99.0 (43.0-137.0) in Group 1; and 80.0 71.0-86.0 (38.0-155.0) in Group 2 (P = 0.83). There was no significant difference between the groups, in terms of pharmacodynamic characteristics of rocuronium. Propofol consumption did not show any difference between the groups. However, remifentanil consumption was significantly lower in Group 1 (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Epidural ropivacaine, in the dose studied, did not prolong the duration of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade. TRIAL REGISTRY NUMBER: ReBEC (ref: RBR-7cyp6t).

Abstract Introduction: Rare health conditions as mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) can directly influence functioning experiences. Mobility restriction, osteoarticular alterations, leads to delayed neuropsychomotor development are some of the negative impacts of MPS. Aims: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the functioning of children with MPS, from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) perspective. Methodology: It is a case series study with a sample of 15 children and adolescents with MPS with a median age of 12 years, followed in a tertiary hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Results: The patients were assessed by the model ICF and results were as following: regarding body functions, most categories presented slight impairment. For mobility of joints and gait, the impairment was severe. Activity and participation with most significant limitations were "learning to read/write", "read/write", "listening" and "performing multiple tasks." In self-care, the main limitations were in "drinking", "taking care of body parts" and "taking care of one's health." Also, there were restrictions on "doing household tasks", "basic economic transactions", "community living" and "religion and spirituality". Conclusion: MPS can have a significant impact in different body systems which act as limiting activities that require body mobility.
