RESUMEN

Using individual-level administrative data, we investigate the spatial patterns of unexplained shares of health care expenditures (HCE) at the municipality level. The focus is on the elderly population in the Italian Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia observed over the period 2017-2019. The empirical analysis comprises two steps. First, random-effects two-part models are estimated to analyze the effect of age, morbidity, and death on the probability and amount of positive individual total HCE and its components. Second, the unexplained shares of HCE at the municipality level are examined to identify areas with under- or over-spending and substitution among services. Results confirm the existing findings on the determinants of HCE and reveal geographic patterns in the unexplained shares of expenditures. We identify clusters of municipalities with observed HCE higher than predicted for each type of service and clusters with substitution between home care and all other services. These findings are associated with the degree of urbanization of these areas and, consequently, with the ease of access to health care. This is crucial from a policy perspective, as it indicates specific policy targets for public health intervention.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative inflammatory-based condition caused by a cascade of different intra-articular molecules including several cytokines. Among the cytokines, prokineticins (PKs) have recently been identified as important mediators of inflammation and pain. This observational study examined the potential involvement of PK2 in degenerative or traumatic knee disease. Fifteen patients presenting knee osteoarthritis (OA group) and 15 patients presenting a traumatic meniscal tear (TM group) were studied. Synovial fluid samples from affected knees were assessed for PK2, IL-10, and TNF-α using the ELISA method. At a long-term follow-up (minimum 5 years, mean = 6.1 years), patients in the TM group underwent clinical re-evaluation with PROMs (Tegner Activity Scale, IKDC, Lysholm, SKV); in addition, X-ray visualization was used to assess the presence of secondary OA. PK2 was detected in synovial fluids of both TM and OA patients and the levels were comparable between the two groups, while IL-10 levels were significantly greater in the OA group than those in TM patients. PK2 levels correlated with those of IL-10. PK2 levels were greater in blood effusions compared to clear samples, did not differ significantly between sexes, nor were they related to differences in weight, height, or injury (meniscal laterality, time since dosing). No correlation was found between PROMs and radiological classifications in patients in the TM group at final follow-up. These data are the first observations of PK2 in synovial fluid following traumatic meniscus injury. These findings suggest possible further prognostic indices and therapeutic targets to limit the development of secondary OA.

AIM: The effect of liposomes bi-functionalized with phosphatidic acid and with a synthetic peptide derived from human apolipoprotein E has been evaluated on the aggregation features of different amyloidogenic proteins: human Amyloid ß1-40 (Aß1-40), transthyretin (TTR) variant S52P, human ß2microglobulin (ß2m) variants ΔN6 and D76N, Serum Amyloid A (SAA). METHODS: The formation of fibrillar aggregates of the proteins was investigated by ThioflavinT fluorescence assay and validated by Atomic Force Microscopy. RESULTS: The results show that liposomes are preventing the transition of non-aggregated forms to the fibrillar state, with stronger effects on Aß1-40, ß2m ΔN6 and SAA. Liposomes also induce disaggregation of the amyloid aggregates of all the proteins investigated, with stronger effects on Aß1-40, ß2 D76N and TTR.SPR assays show that liposomes bind Aß1-40 and SAA aggregates with high affinity (KD in the nanomolar range) whereas binding to TTR aggregates showed a lower affinity (KD in the micromolar range). Aggregates of ß2m variants showed both high and low affinity binding sites. Computed Structural analysis of protein fibrillar aggregates and considerations on the multidentate features of liposomes allow to speculate a common mechanism of action, based on binding the ß-stranded peptide regions responsible for the amyloid formation. CONCLUSION: Thus, multifunctional liposomes perform as pharmacological chaperones with anti-amyloidogenic activity, with a promising potential for the treatment of a number of protein-misfolding diseases.Key messageAmyloidosis is a group of diseases, each due to a specific protein misfolding.Anti-amyloidogenic nanoparticles have been gaining the utmost importance as a potential treatment for protein misfolding disorders.Liposomes bi-functionalized with phosphatidic acid and with a synthetic peptide derived from human apolipoprotein E showed anti-amyloidogenic activity.

Introduction: Growth hormone secretagogues (GHSs) exert multiple actions, being able to activate GHS-receptor 1a, control inflammation and metabolism, to enhance GH/insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)-mediated myogenesis, and to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme. These mechanisms are of interest for potentially targeting multiple steps of pathogenic cascade in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Methods: Here, we aimed to provide preclinical evidence for potential benefits of GHSs in DMD, via a multidisciplinary in vivo and ex vivo comparison in mdx mice, of two ad hoc synthesized compounds (EP80317 and JMV2894), with a wide but different profile. 4-week-old mdx mice were treated for 8 weeks with EP80317 or JMV2894 (320 µg/kg/d, s.c.). Results: In vivo, both GHSs increased mice forelimb force (recovery score, RS towards WT: 20% for EP80317 and 32% for JMV2894 at week 8). In parallel, GHSs also reduced diaphragm (DIA) and gastrocnemius (GC) ultrasound echodensity, a fibrosis-related parameter (RS: ranging between 26% and 75%). Ex vivo, both drugs ameliorated DIA isometric force and calcium-related indices (e.g., RS: 40% for tetanic force). Histological analysis highlighted a relevant reduction of fibrosis in GC and DIA muscles of treated mice, paralleled by a decrease in gene expression of TGF-ß1 and Col1a1. Also, decreased levels of pro-inflammatory genes (IL-6, CD68), accompanied by an increment in Sirt-1, PGC-1α and MEF2c expression, were observed in response to treatments, suggesting an overall improvement of myofiber metabolism. No detectable transcript levels of GHS receptor-1a, nor an increase of circulating IGF-1 were found, suggesting the presence of a novel receptor-independent mechanism in skeletal muscle. Preliminary docking studies revealed a potential binding capability of JMV2894 on metalloproteases involved in extracellular matrix remodeling and cytokine production, such as ADAMTS-5 and MMP-9, overactivated in DMD. Discussion: Our results support the interest of GHSs as modulators of pathology progression in mdx mice, disclosing a direct anti-fibrotic action that may prove beneficial to contrast pathological remodeling.

Introduction: Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a life-saving approach in critically ill patients. However, it may affect the diaphragmatic structure and function, beyond the lungs. Levosimendan is a calcium sensitizer widely used in clinics to improve cardiac contractility in acute heart failure patients. In vitro studies have demonstrated that levosimendan increased force-generating capacity of the diaphragm in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Thus the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of levosimendan administration in an animal model of ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction (VIDD) on muscle contraction and diaphragm muscle cell viability. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats underwent prolonged MV (5 hours). VIDD+Levo group received a starting bolus of levosimendan immediately after intratracheal intubation and then an intravenous infusion of levosimendan throughout the study. Diaphragms were collected for ex vivo contractility measurement (with electric stimulation), histological analysis and Western blot analysis. Healthy rats were used as the control. Results: Levosimendan treatment maintained an adequate mean arterial pressure during the entire experimental protocol, preserved levels of autophagy-related proteins (LC3BI and LC3BII) and the muscular cell diameter demonstrated by histological analysis. Levosimendan did not affect the diaphragmatic contraction or the levels of proteins involved in the protein degradation (atrogin). Conclusions: Our data suggest that levosimendan preserves muscular cell structure (cross-sectional area) and muscle autophagy after 5 hours of MV in a rat model of VIDD. However, levosimendan did not improve diaphragm contractile efficiency.

The aim of this study is to quantitatively assess motor control changes in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients after bilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS), based on a novel muscle synergy evaluation approach. A group of 20 PD patients evaluated at baseline (before surgery, T0), at 3 months (T1), and at 12 months (T2) after STN-DBS surgery, as well as a group of 20 age-matched healthy control subjects, underwent an instrumented gait analysis, including surface electromyography recordings from 12 muscles. A smaller number of muscle synergies was found in PD patients (4 muscle synergies, at each time point) compared to control subjects (5 muscle synergies). The neuromuscular robustness of PD patients-that at T0 was smaller with respect to controls (PD T0: 69.3 ± 2.2% vs. Controls: 77.6 ± 1.8%, p = 0.004)-increased at T1 (75.8 ± 1.8%), becoming not different from that of controls at T2 (77.5 ± 1.9%). The muscle synergies analysis may offer clinicians new knowledge on the neuromuscular structure underlying PD motor types of behavior and how they can improve after electroceutical STN-DBS therapy.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable motor neuron disease whose etiology remains unresolved; nonetheless, mutations of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) have been associated with several variants of ALS. Currently available pharmacologic interventions are only symptomatic and palliative in effect; therefore, there is a pressing demand for more effective drugs. This study examined potential therapeutic effects of growth hormone secretagogues (GHSs), a large family of synthetic compounds, as possible candidates for the treatment of ALS. Human neuroblastoma cells expressing the SOD1-G93A mutated protein (SH-SY5Y SOD1G93A cells) were incubated for 24 h with H2O2 (150 µM) in the absence, or presence, of GHS (1 µM), in order to study the protective effect of GHS against increased oxidative stress. The two GHSs examined in this study, hexarelin and JMV2894, protected cells from H2O2-induced cytotoxicity by activating molecules that regulate apoptosis and promote cell survival processes. These findings suggest the possibility of developing new GHS-based anti-oxidant and neuroprotective drugs with improved therapeutic potential. Further investigations are required for the following: (i) to clarify GHS molecular mechanisms of action, and (ii) to envisage the development of new GHSs that may be useful in ALS therapy.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) in elderly patients is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease. The pathogenesis of PD is associated with dopaminergic neuron degeneration of the substantia nigra in the basal ganglia, causing classic motor symptoms. Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation have been identified as possible pathways in laboratory investigations. Nutrition, a potentially versatile factor from all environmental factors affecting PD, has received intense research scrutiny. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and WEB OF SCIENCE databases from 2000 until the present. Only randomized clinical trials (RCTs), observational case-control studies, and follow-up studies were included. RESULTS: We retrieved fifty-two studies that met the inclusion criteria. Most selected studies investigated the effects of malnutrition and the Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) on PD incidence and progression. Other investigations contributed evidence on the critical role of microbiota, vitamins, polyphenols, dairy products, coffee, and alcohol intake. CONCLUSIONS: There are still many concerns regarding the association between PD and nutrition, possibly due to underlying genetic and environmental factors. However, there is a body of evidence revealing that correcting malnutrition, gut microbiota, and following the MeDiet reduced the onset of PD and reduced clinical progression. Other factors, such as polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and coffee intake, can have a potential protective effect. Conversely, milk and its accessory products can increase PD risk. Nutritional intervention is essential for neurologists to improve clinical outcomes and reduce the disease progression of PD.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) arises from neuronal death due to complex interactions of genetic, molecular, and environmental factors. Currently, only two drugs, riluzole and edaravone, have been approved to slow the progression of this disease. However, ghrelin and other ligands of the GHS-R1a receptor have demonstrated interesting neuroprotective activities that could be exploited in this pathology. Ghrelin, a 28-amino acid hormone, primarily synthesized and secreted by oxyntic cells in the stomach wall, binds to the pituitary GHS-R1a and stimulates GH secretion; in addition, ghrelin is endowed with multiple extra endocrine bioactivities. Native ghrelin requires esterification with octanoic acid for binding to the GHS-R1a receptor; however, this esterified form is very labile and represents less than 10% of circulating ghrelin. A large number of synthetic compounds, the growth hormone secretagogues (GHS) encompassing short peptides, peptoids, and non-peptidic moieties, are capable of mimicking several biological activities of ghrelin, including stimulation of GH release, appetite, and elevation of blood IGF-I levels. GHS have demonstrated neuroprotective and anticonvulsant effects in experimental models of pathologies both in vitro and in vivo. To illustrate, some GHS, currently under evaluation by regulatory agencies for the treatment of human cachexia, have a good safety profile and are safe for human use. Collectively, evidence suggests that ghrelin and cognate GHS may constitute potential therapies for ALS.

Graphene is a 2D crystal composed of carbon atoms in a hexagonal arrangement. From their isolation, graphene nanoplatelets (nCD) have revolutionized material science due to their unique properties, and, nowadays, there are countless applications, including drug delivery, biosensors, energy storage, and tissue engineering. Within this work, nCD were combined with PLA, a widely used and clinically relevant thermoplastic polymer, to produce advanced composite texturized electrospun fabric for the next-generation devices. The electrospinning manufacturing process was set-up by virtue of a proper characterization of the composite raw material and its solution. From the morphological point of view, the nCD addition permitted the reduction of the fiber diameter while the texture allowed more aligned fibers. After that, mechanical features of fabrics were tested at RT and upon heating (40 °C, 69 °C), showing the reinforcement action of nCD mainly in the texturized mats at 40 °C. Finally, mats' degradation in simulated physiological fluid was minimal up to 30 d, even if composite mats revealed excellent fluid-handling capability. Moreover, no toxic impurities and degradation products were pointed out during the incubation. This work gains insight on the effects of the combination of composite carbon-based material and texturized fibers to reach highly performing fabrics.

Skin erosion is a hardware-related complication commonly described after deep brain stimulation (DBS). Hardware exposure is often associated with the development of infection that can lead to implant removal. However, in selected cases, it is possible to manage skin erosion without having to remove the hardware. This article presents the case of a patient with recurrent skin erosions above the IPG, who underwent multiple surgeries. Given the failure of less invasive approaches, a more complex surgery with the employment of a pedunculated flap of pectoralis major in order to cover the IPG was attempted. Nevertheless, the IPG removal was finally unavoidable, resulting in a rapid decline in clinical performance. This illustrative case suggests how, in patients with sustained stimulation who benefit from a good degree of autonomy, it may be useful to use invasive surgical techniques to resolve skin erosions and save the DBS system. In spite of everything, sometimes complete or partial removal of the implant still becomes unavoidable, but this can lead to a severe worsening of PD symptoms. Definitive removal of the system should therefore be considered only in cases of frank infection or after failure of all other approaches.

This study investigated modifications of microRNA expression profiles in knee synovial fluid of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Twelve microRNAs (26a-5p, 27a-3p, let7a-5p, 140-5p, 146-5p, 155-5p, 16-5p,186-5p, 199a-3p, 210-3p, 205-5p, and 30b-5p) were measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in synovial fluids obtained from 30 patients with ACL tear and 18 patients with knee OA. These 12 miRNAs were chosen on the basis of their involvement in pathological processes of bone and cartilage. Our results show that miR-26a-5p, miR-186-5p, and miR-30b-5p were expressed in the majority of OA and ACL tear samples, whereas miR-199a-3p, miR-210-3p, and miR-205-5p were detectable only in a few samples. Interestingly, miR-140-5p was expressed in only one sample of thirty in the ACL tear group. miR-140-5p has been proposed to modulate two genes (BGN and COL5A1100) that are involved in ligamentous homeostasis; their altered expression could be linked with ACL rupture susceptibility. The expression of miR-30b-5p was higher in OA and chronic ACL groups compared to acute ACL samples. We provide evidence that specific miRNAs could be detected not only in synovial fluid of patients with OA, but also in post-traumatic ACL tears.

Combined AntiRetroviral Treatments (cARTs) used for HIV infection may result in varied metabolic complications, which in some cases, may be related to patient genetic factors, particularly microRNAs. The use of monozygotic twins, differing only for HIV infection, presents a unique and powerful model for the controlled analysis of potential alterations of miRNAs regulation consequent to cART treatment. Profiling of 2578 mature miRNA in the subcutaneous (SC) adipose tissue and plasma of monozygotic twins was investigated by the GeneChip® miRNA 4.1 array. Real-time PCR and ddPCR experiments were performed in order to validate differentially expressed miRNAs. Target genes of deregulated miRNAs were predicted by the miRDB database (prediction score > 70) and enrichment analysis was carried out with g:Profiler. Processes in SC adipose tissue most greatly affected by miRNA up-regulation included (i) macromolecular metabolic processes, (ii) regulation of neurogenesis, and (iii) protein phosphorylation. Furthermore, KEGG analysis revealed miRNA up-regulation involvement in (i) insulin signaling pathways, (ii) neurotrophin signaling pathways, and (iii) pancreatic cancer. By contrast, miRNA up-regulation in plasma was involved in (i) melanoma, (ii) p53 signaling pathways, and (iii) focal adhesion. Our findings suggest a mechanism that may increase the predisposition of HIV+ patients to insulin resistance and cancer.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of ab-interno microcatheterization and 360° viscodilation of Schlemm's canal (SC) performed with OMNI viscosurgical system in open angle glaucoma (OAG) together or not with phacoemulsification. SETTING: Two surgical sites. DESIGN: Retrospective, observational. METHODS: Eighty eyes from 73 patients with mild to moderate OAG underwent ab- interno SC viscodilation performed with OMNI system. Fifty eyes (Group 1) underwent only SC viscodilation, while 30 eyes (Group 2) underwent glaucoma surgery + cataract extraction. Primary success endpoint at 12 months was an intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction higher than 25% from baseline with an absolute value of 18 mmHg or lower, either on the same number or fewer ocular hypotensive medications, without further interventions. Secondary effectiveness endpoints included mean IOP, number of medications and comparison of outcomes between groups. Safety endpoints consisted of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), adverse events (AEs), and subsequent surgical procedures. RESULTS: Primary success was achieved in 40.0% and 67.9% in Groups 1 and 2, respectively. Mean IOP at 12-month follow-up showed a significant reduction in both groups (from 23.0 to 15.6 mmHg, p < 0.001, and from 21.5 to 14.1, p < 0.001, in Groups 1 and 2, respectively). Mean medication number decreased in both groups (from 3.0 to 2.0, p < 0.001 and from 3.4 to 1.9, p < 0.001, in Groups 1 and 2, respectively). AEs included hyphema (2 eyes), mild hypotony (4 eyes), IOP spikes one month after surgery (1 eye). Twelve eyes (15.0%) required subsequent surgical procedures. No BCVA reduction was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Viscodilation of SC using OMNI viscosurgical systems is safe and relatively effective in reducing IOP in adult patients with OAG.

It is important to find objective biomarkers for evaluating gait in Parkinson's Disease (PD), especially related to the foot and lower leg segments. Foot-switch signals, analyzed through Statistical Gait Analysis (SGA), allow the foot-floor contact sequence to be characterized during a walking session lasting five-minutes, which includes turnings. Gait parameters were compared between 20 PD patients and 20 age-matched controls. PDs showed similar straight-line speed, cadence, and double-support compared to controls, as well as typical gait-phase durations, except for a small decrease in the flat-foot contact duration (-4% of the gait cycle, p = 0.04). However, they showed a significant increase in atypical gait cycles (+42%, p = 0.006), during both walking straight and turning. A forefoot strike, instead of a "normal" heel strike, characterized the large majority of PD's atypical cycles, whose total percentage was 25.4% on the most-affected and 15.5% on the least-affected side. Moreover, we found a strong correlation between the atypical cycles and the motor clinical score UPDRS-III (r = 0.91, p = 0.002), in the subset of PD patients showing an abnormal number of atypical cycles, while we found a moderate correlation (r = 0.60, p = 0.005), considering the whole PD population. Atypical cycles have proved to be a valid biomarker to quantify subtle gait dysfunctions in PD patients.

Recent advancements in bidimensional nanoparticles production such as graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO) have the potential to meet the need for highly functional personal protective equipment (PPE) against SARS-CoV-2 infection. The ability of G and GO to interact with microorganisms provides an opportunity to develop engineered textiles for use in PPE and limit the spread of COVID-19. PPE in current use in high-risk settings for COVID transmission provides only a physical barrier that decreases infection likelihood and does not inactivate the virus. Here, we show that virus pre-incubation with soluble GO inhibits SARS-CoV-2 infection of VERO cells. Furthermore, when G/GO-functionalized polyurethane or cotton was in contact SARS-CoV-2, the infectivity of the fabric was nearly completely inhibited. The findings presented here constitute an important innovative nanomaterial-based strategy to significantly increase PPE efficacy in protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that may implement water filtration, air purification, and diagnostics methods.

Androgens in women, as well as in men, are intrinsic to maintenance of (i) reproductive competency, (ii) cardiac health, (iii) appropriate bone remodeling and mass retention, (iii) muscle tone and mass, and (iv) brain function, in part, through their mitigation of neurodegenerative disease effects. In recognition of the pluripotency of endogenous androgens, exogenous androgens, and selected congeners, have been prescribed off-label for several decades to treat low libido and sexual dysfunction in menopausal women, as well as, to improve physical performance. However, long-term safety and efficacy of androgen administration has yet to be fully elucidated. Side effects often observed include (i) hirsutism, (ii) acne, (iii) deepening of the voice, and (iv) weight gain but are associated most frequently with supra-physiological doses. By contrast, short-term clinical trials suggest that the use of low-dose testosterone therapy in women appears to be effective, safe and economical. There are, however, few clinical studies, which have focused on effects of androgen therapy on pre- and post-menopausal women; moreover, androgen mechanisms of action have not yet been thoroughly explained in these subjects. This review considers clinical effects of androgens on women's health in order to prevent chronic diseases and reduce cancer risk in gynecological tissues.

The intra-articular synovial fluid environment in skeletally immature patients following an ACL tear is complex and remains undefined. Levels of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines change significantly in response to trauma and collectively define the inflammatory environment. Of these factors the resolvins, with their inherent anti-inflammatory, reparative, and analgesic properties, have become prominent. This study examined the levels of resolvins and other cytokines after ACL tears in skeletally immature and adult patients in order to determine if skeletal maturity affects the inflammatory pattern. Skeletally immature and adult patients with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and meniscal tears were prospectively enrolled over a 5-month period. Synovial fluid samples were obtained before surgery quantifying Resolvin E1, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IL-10 by ELISA. Comparisons between skeletally immature patients and adults, the influence of meniscal tear, growth plate maturity and time from trauma were analyzed. Skeletally immature patients had significantly greater levels of Resolvin E1 and IL-10 compared with adults with an isolated anterior cruciate ligament lesion. Among the injured skeletally immature patients Resolvin E1 levels were greater in the open growth plate group compared with those with closing growth plates. Moreover, levels of Resolvin E1 and IL-10 appeared to decrease with time. Our results suggest that skeletally immature patients have a stronger activation of the Resolvin pattern compared to adult patients and that synovial fluid Resolvins could play an antinflammatory role in the knee after anterior cruciate ligament lesion and that its activity may be synergistic with that of IL-10.

Hexarelin, a synthetic hexapeptide, exerts cyto-protective effects at the mitochondrial level in cardiac and skeletal muscles, both in vitro and in vivo, may also have important neuroprotective bioactivities. This study examined the inhibitory effects of hexarelin on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced apoptosis in Neuro-2A cells. Neuro-2A cells were treated for 24 h with various concentrations of H2O2 or with the combination of H2O2 and hexarelin following which cell viability and nitrite (NO2-) release were measured. Cell morphology was also documented throughout and changes arising were quantified using Image J skeleton and fractal analysis procedures. Apoptotic responses were evaluated by Real-Time PCR (caspase-3, caspase-7, Bax, and Bcl-2 mRNA levels) and Western Blot (cleaved caspase-3, cleaved caspase-7, MAPK, and Akt). Our results indicate that hexarelin effectively antagonized H2O2-induced damage to Neuro-2A cells thereby (i) improving cell viability, (ii) reducing NO2- release and (iii) restoring normal morphologies. Hexarelin treatment also reduced mRNA levels of caspase-3 and its activation, and modulated mRNA levels of the BCL-2 family. Moreover, hexarelin inhibited MAPKs phosphorylation and increased p-Akt protein expression. In conclusion, our results demonstrate neuroprotective and anti-apoptotic effects of hexarelin, suggesting that new analogues could be developed for their neuroprotective effects.
