RESUMEN

Preference cards are a foundation for perioperative inventory management processes; however, they can add to nurses' perceived workload, introduce variability into supply management processes, and increase costs. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement an automated perioperative inventory management system to decrease nurses' workload and increase their efficiency. Goals included improving preference card accuracy, decreasing add-on supplies, and decreasing the supply costs for each procedure. Using a preintervention-postintervention survey design, the project team evaluated the outcomes of workload, preference card accuracy, add-on supplies, and procedural cost. Nurses' perception of workload decreased in the supply management processes and cost of supplies categories and increased in the documenting supply use category. A four-month 7.7% improvement in preference card accuracy reduced the average procedure supply cost by $86.72 for each procedure and saved the hospital $260,467. The number of add-on supplies was reduced by 4,177 for a 20% reduction.

RESUMEN

Inequities between nursing workforce supply and demand continue to challenge nurse executives in creating the vision for a postpandemic nursing workforce. Health system's workforce redesign strategies must prioritize the changing needs of the multigenerational workforce to maximize the available supply of nurses willing to remain in the workforce. A test of a newly designed flexible workforce framework, aimed to meet the needs of the multigenerational workforce, resulted in increased fill rates and decreased costs of labor.

RESUMEN

The reimbursement structure of the US health care system is shifting from a volume-based system to a value-based system. Adopting a comprehensive data analytics platform has become important to health care facilities, in part to navigate this shift. Hospitals generate plenty of data, but actionable analytics are necessary to help personnel interpret and apply data to improve practice. Perioperative services is an important revenue-generating department for hospitals, and each perioperative service line requires a tailored approach to be successful in managing outcomes and controlling costs. Perioperative leaders need to prepare to use data analytics to reduce variation in supplies, labor, and overhead. Mercy, based in Chesterfield, Missouri, adopted a perioperative dashboard that helped perioperative leaders collaborate with surgeons and perioperative staff members to organize and analyze health care data, which ultimately resulted in significant cost savings.
