Scientific evidence regarding whether intellectually gifted children show similar physical activity habits and physical fitness levels in comparison to typically developed children, is inconclusive. This is in part due to the scant research that has directly compared both groups of people. In this study, physical activity prevalence, self-perceived and objectively assessed physical fitness levels, and body image were assessed in a sample of 74 intellectually gifted children (mean age 11.6 ± 1.2 years). Seventy-four non-gifted children matched by age and sex were selected as a comparison cohort. Results indicated that both groups showed similar self-perceived and objectively assessed fitness levels. Physical activity habits were also similar, although significant differences were observed indicating that intellectually gifted girls were less active in comparison with non-gifted girls. Both cohorts perceived their body image accurately, although intellectually gifted children were much more satisfied with their physical appearance.

To assess drug-resistant bacterial colonisation rates and associated risk factors in children with complex chronic conditions admitted to a national reference unit in Spain. Cross-sectional study that included all children admitted to our unit from September 2018 to July 2019. Rectal swabs were obtained to determine multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (MR-GNB) colonisation, and nasal swab to determine S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) colonisation. Medical records were reviewed. 100 children were included, with a median of four complex chronic conditions. Sixteen percent had S. aureus colonisation, including two MRSA. S. aureus colonisation was associated with technology-dependent children, while being on antibiotic prophylaxis or having undergone antibiotic therapy in the previous month were protective factors. The prevalence of MR-GNB colonisation was 27%, which was associated with immunosuppressive therapy (aOR 31; 2.02-47]; p = 0.01), antibiotic prophylaxis (aOR 4.56; 1.4-14.86; p = 0.012), previously treated skin-infections (aOR 2.9; 1.07-8.14; p = 0.03), surgery in the previous year (aOR 1.4; 1.06-1.8; p = 0.014), and hospital admission in the previous year (aOR 1.79; [1.26-2.56]; p = 0.001). The rate of S. aureus nasal colonisation in this series was not high despite the presence of chronic conditions, and few cases corresponded to MRSA. Antibiotic prophylaxis, immunosuppressive therapies, history of infections, previous surgeries, and length of admission in the previous year were risk factors for MR-GNB colonisation.

PRO-Mueve Relaciones Sanas (PRO-Mote Healthy Relationships) is a gender-based violence and dating violence prevention program targeted at adolescents. The program has been designed to be implemented during three consecutive courses [from the first to third year of Spanish mandatory secondary education (ESO)] in 8 annual sessions, imparted by university students who have been previously trained and supervised by university professors. The present study evaluates the effects of the program after the first year of implementation through a quasi-experimental design (Intervention Group N = 181; Quasi-control group N = 62; M age = 12.11; SDage = 0.57; 54.7% girls) and assesses whether there are gender differences in the outcomes. The results obtained evidenced a significant reduction in benevolent sexism in the intervention group compared to the quasi-control group. Regarding hostile sexism, it was found to increase significantly in the quasi-control group, while it remained stable in the intervention group. Thus, there were significant differences between both groups after the intervention. Likewise, romantic love myths were found to decrease significantly, and knowledge about gender-based violence increased significantly in the intervention group between the two time points assessed, although there were no significant differences with the quasi-control group. No gender differences in the outcomes of the program were observed. The obtained results supported the efficacy of the program during the first year of intervention in the first course of the ESO and laid the foundation for the following phases of intervention.
