RESUMEN

Although fluorescent lamps (FL) are extensively used worldwide, recycling rates in some countries are still low. If disposed of inappropriately and broken, FL can cause soil contamination. Hg toxicity in FL is extensively discussed in the literature; however, few studies address the other toxic metals present in the phosphorous powder of FL (PPFL). This paper presents a characterization of the environmental mobility with sequential extraction scheme (SES) of Cd, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in PPFL, and modeling the potential risks to human health, in case of direct disposal in soils. An after thermal treatment waste was used for safety reasons. The SES method included five fractions, and the quantification was performed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Human health risk assessment (HHRA) was conducted using RISC4® software. The PPFL showed the following mobility sequence: Cu (85%) > Ni (81%) > Hg (80%) > Zn (77%) > Cd (75%) > Mn (6%) > Pb (2%), which suggests that Cu, Ni, Zn, and Cd, besides Hg, could be of environmental concern in terms of availability. HHRA showed the potential hazard of Cd, for both children and adults, in the hypothetical scenario of vegetable ingestion, considering vegetables grown in soils contaminated with FL waste. The thermal treatment does not completely remove Hg from the matrix, and the residual Hg still poses a risk to children. These results show that Hg and Cd can be hazardous to humans and reinforce the importance of the correct disposal and treatment of PPFL.

The present study evaluated the ecological risk of metal contamination in sediments of Guanabara Bay (GB) by combining multiple lines of evidence (LOEs). Chemical analysis and a set of whole-sediment toxicity assays were conducted with Tiburonella viscana, Kalliapseudes schubartii, Anomalocardia flexuosa, and Nitocra sp. Results were integrated by multivariate analysis and qualitative methods. Additionally, a whole-sediment Toxicity Identification Evaluation technique (TIE) was applied to identify the chemical groups responsible for the effects. Sediments from harbor and industrial areas exhibited toxicity linked to moderate to high concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cr. The TIE technique confirmed such effects, but it also indicates the contribution of ammonia and organic compounds to the observed toxicity. Our results demonstrate that the combination of multiple LOEs improves the effectiveness of environmental risk assessment of chemical stressors and management of coastal ecosystems in tropical regions.

We present an alternative approach for establishing in situ bioaccumulation assessment of methyl-Hg (MeHg), total-Hg, Cd, Pb and Zn in bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana from four bays of Rio de Janeiro presenting varying degrees of eutrophication, acid volatile sulfides (2-55 µmol g-1), simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) and total metals (TM) in sediments. Using metal concentrations of composite samples from three size classes of bivalve and their incorporation rates (IR = metal concentration / total length), which depend on exposure time, we calculated asymptotic IR and respective consequent metal concentrations. Both IR and the metal concentration presented inverse relationships with total length (excepting MeHg) and bay contamination. Lead and zinc concentrations were above Brazilian legal criteria in the most anoxic and contaminated bay, suggesting significant metal bioavailability (SEM/TM between 8% and 63%).

RESUMEN

This study addressed the identification and monitoring of pollution sources of terrestrial origin in rivers (domestic sewage and industrial effluents) and critical fluvial segments in highly polluted environments under tidal influence (mixing marine and continental sources) from Guanabara Bay Basin, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The mass balance of contaminants was determined in conditions of continuous flow (low tide) during dry season (lower dilution capability). The results allowed the evaluation of the potential of contaminant mass generation by the different river segments and the estimation of their natural and anthropogenic components. The water quality of Iguaçú and Sarapuí Rivers were evaluated for metals and biochemical oxygen demand. The method gave an excellent response, including the possibility of sources identification and contaminated river segments ranking. The approach also offers fast execution and data interpretation, being highly efficient.
