RESUMEN

Numerous systemic diseases can be manifested at the cornea. Sometimes the corneal involvement is the first sign of the systemic process. It may be manifested in many different forms, such as an ulcer in the corneal periphery or a crystalline keratopathy. Therapy is interdisciplinary and primarily directed against the underlying disease.

RESUMEN

The motto of the German Ophthalmolological Society (DOG) Congress 2019 "Ophthalmology: our medical discipline with a future" raises the question of what "ophthalmological future" should really be, what are its driving forces and what are the foundations of its design. The design of the future, usually equated with "progress", naturally always takes place out of the present, which itself is a product of the past. History, like time and evolution, is always a continuum. Although we may not always be very clear about this, the history always influences the future. "Future through history" especially arises where lessons are learnt from "historical mistakes", where good but forgotten ideas are rediscovered and where history is used for a better understanding.

RESUMEN

Both high myopia and glaucoma can have devastating effects on the visual function. Diagnostic tests and treatment can be challenging when both diseases are coexistent. This article discusses some of the typical problems in the management of glaucoma in highly myopic patients.

RESUMEN

Not only the scientific successes but also his personality caused Albrecht von Graefe (1828-1870) to gain a worldwide reputation. His two foundations "Archive for Ophthalmology" in 1854 and the "(German) Ophthalmological Society" (DOG) in 1857 as well as his famous eye clinic in Berlin were important for his colleagues and patients from many countries and most continents. The 2017 DOG congress has the motto "German Ophthalmology internationally"; thus, it is worthwhile to be reminded of this great ophthalmologist.

RESUMEN

Canaloplasty is a recently introduced non-penetrating surgical technique for glaucoma, which seeks to improve the natural outflow of aqueous humor through Schlemm's canal and the collector channels. Just as in all forms of glaucoma surgery there are a certain number of failures of the procedure and further surgery is often needed to reduce the intraocular pressure in these cases. This article describes some of the revision procedures after canaloplasty.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Conjunctival amyloidosis is a rare disorder. It is often clinically not suspected or diagnosed. This study intended to demonstrate the clinical and histopathologic features of this infrequent disease, including an immunohistochemical search for amyloidotic proteins. METHODS: Retrospective case series of the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of six patients with conjunctival amyloidosis. Immunohistochemical analysis with respect to possible amyloidotic components of the conjunctival deposits was performed. RESULTS: The diagnosis of amyloidosis was not suspected in all six cases presenting with an amelanotic conjunctival lesion. In three patients a conjunctival tumor of unknown origin, in one case each a papillomatous alteration of the conjunctiva, a conjunctival granulomatous inflammation, and a lymphoma were assumed respectively. The diagnosis of amyloidosis was made by histopathology. Immunohistochemical examination found lambda and kappa light chains as well as prealbumin within the amyloid deposits in one of the six specimens. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of amyloidosis has to be kept in mind in cases with an unclear conjunctival mass or inflammatory process. Only a tissue biopsy is able to prove the diagnosis. A possible underlying systemic disease has to be ruled out.
