RESUMEN

The solution synthesis of rhodium nanoparticles (Rh NPs) was achieved from the organometallic complex [Rh(η3-C3H5)3] under mild reaction conditions in the presence of a polymer (PVP), a monophosphine (PPh3) and a diphosphine (dppb) as a stabilizer, leading to very small Rh NPs of 2.2, 1.3 and 1.7 nm mean size, with PVP, PPh3 and dppb, respectively. The surface properties of these nanoparticles were compared using a model catalysis reaction namely, hydrogenation of cyclohexene, first under colloidal conditions and then under supported conditions after their immobilization onto an amino functionalized silica-coated magnetite support. PVP-stabilized Rh NPs were the most active catalyst whatever the catalytic conditions as a result of a strong coordination of the phosphine ligands at the metal surface that blocks some surface atoms even after several recycles of the supported nanocatalysts and limit the reactivity of the metallic surface.

RESUMEN

We report measurements of the nonlinear refractive index, n(2), of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NPs) in toluene at 532 nm. The measurements were performed using the Z-scan technique with 80 ps laser pulses at 7 Hz. Large values of n(2) in the range of 10(-13)-10(-12) cm(2)/W were measured, and negligible two-photon absorption coefficient was estimated for colloids having NP filling fractions in the range of 10(-8)-10(-7).

RESUMEN

The main viruses involved in acute respiratory diseases among children are: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenzavirus (FLU), parainfluenzavirus (PIV), adenovirus (AdV), human rhinovirus (HRV), and the human metapneumovirus (hMPV). The purpose of the present study was to identify respiratory viruses that affected children younger than five years old in Uberlândia, Midwestern Brazil. Nasopharyngeal aspirates from 379 children attended at Hospital de Clínicas (HC/UFU), from 2001 to 2004, with acute respiratory disease, were collected and tested by immunofluorescence assay (IFA) to detect RSV, FLU A and B, PIV 1, 2, and 3 and AdV, and RT-PCR to detect HRV. RSV was detected in 26.4% (100/379) of samples, FLU A and B in 9.5% (36/379), PIV 1, 2 and 3 in 6.3% (24/379) and AdV in 3.7% (14/379). HRV were detected in 29.6% (112/379) of the negative and indeterminate samples tested by IFI. RSV, particularly among children less than six months of life, and HRV cases showed highest incidence. Negative samples by both IFA and RT-PCR might reflect the presence of other pathogens, such as hMPV, coronavirus, and bacteria. Laboratorial diagnosis constituted an essential instrument to determine the incidence of the most common viruses in respiratory infections among children in this region.

RESUMEN

The 5' splice site signal (5'ss) in Moloney murine sarcoma virus ts110 (MuSVts110) RNA was found to participate in the regulation of its splicing phenotype. This 5'ss (CAG/GUAGGA) departs from the mammalian consensus (CAG/GURAGU) at positions +4 and +6, both of which base pair with U1 and U6 small nuclear RNAs during splicing. A doubling in splicing efficiency and near elimination of the splicing thermosensitivity characteristic of MuSVts110 were observed in 5'ss mutants containing a U at position +6 (termed 5' A6U), even in those in which U1-5'ss complementarity had been reduced. At the permissive temperature (28 degrees C), the 5' A6U mutation increased the efficiency of the second splicing reaction, while at the nonpermissive temperature (39 degrees C), both splicing reactions were positively affected.
