RESUMEN

We present a theory and numerical evidence for the existence of a previously unexplored in-plane electric field in collisionless asymmetric magnetic reconnection. This electric field, dubbed the "Larmor electric field," is associated with finite Larmor radius effects and is distinct from the known Hall electric field. Potentially, it could be an important indicator for the upcoming Magnetospheric Multiscale mission to locate reconnection sites as we expect it to appear on the magnetospheric side, pointing earthward, at the dayside magnetopause reconnection site.

RESUMEN

The structural behaviour of CuInSe(2) under high pressure has been studied up to 53 GPa using angle-dispersive x-ray powder diffraction techniques. The previously reported structural phase transition from its ambient pressure tetragonal structure to a high pressure phase with a NaCl-like cubic structure at 7.6 GPa has been confirmed. On further compression, another structural phase transition is observed at 39 GPa. A full structural study of this high pressure phase has been carried out and the high pressure structure has been identified as orthorhombic with space group Cmcm and lattice parameters a = 4.867(8) Å, b = 5.023(8) Å and c = 4.980(3) Å at 53.2(2) GPa. This phase transition behaviour is similar to those of analogous binary and trinary semiconductors, where the orthorhombic Cmcm structure can also be viewed as a distortion of the cubic NaCl-type structure.

RESUMEN

Perfusion status of the critically ill and injured has, in the past, been assessed by indices such as blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and urine output. These indices represent global perfusion and may not reflect regional blood-flow abnormalities. These hypoperfused regions may lead to organ failure and subsequent death. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract remains one of these tissue beds that is extremely sensitive to low-flow states. Gastric tonometry is a noninvasive means in which these early symptoms of low flow may be monitored with early interventions to optimize tissue perfusion and patient outcome.

RESUMEN

Trauma is a serious threat in developing countries. Prevention efforts, which have been so effective in other countries in controlling the incidence of injuries, are almost nonexistent. The lifestyles make the population prone to injury and tribal cultures may practice rituals that create personal injury. Developing nations lack adequate health care services for a large section of the population. A trauma nurse who visited Papua New Guinea describes her experience with living and working in various health care settings.
