RESUMEN

Phenological shifts linked to global warming reflect the ability of organisms to track changing climatic conditions. However, different organisms track global warming differently and there is an increasing interest in the link between phenological traits and plant abundance and distribution. Long-term data sets are often used to estimate phenological traits to climate change, but so far little has been done to evaluate the quality of these estimates. Here, we use a 73-year long data series of first flowering dates for 25 species from north-temperate Sweden to evaluate (i) correlations between first flowering dates and year for different time periods and (ii) linear regression models between first flowering date and mean monthly temperatures in preceding months. Furthermore, we evaluate the potential of this kind of data to estimate the phenological temperature sensitivities (i.e. number of days phenological change per degree temperature change, ß60) in such models. The sign of the correlations between first flowering dates and year were highly inconsistent among different time periods, highlighting that estimates of phenological change are sensitive to the specific time period used. The first flowering dates of all species were correlated with temperature, but with large differences in both the strength of the response and the period(s) of the year that were most strongly associated with phenological variation. Finally, our analyses indicated that legacy data sets need to be relatively long-term to be useful for estimating phenological temperature sensitivities (ß60) for inter-specific comparisons. In 10-year long observation series only one out of 24 species reached ≥80 % probability of estimating temperature sensitivity (ß60) within a ±1 range, and 17 out of 24 species reached ≥80 % probability when observation series were 20 years or shorter. The standard error for ß60 ranged from 0.6 to 2.0 for 10-year long observation series, and 19 out of 24 species reached SE < 1 after 15 years. In general, late flowering species will require longer time series than early flowering species.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate trends in the practice of selective non-operative management (SNOM) for penetrating abdominal injury (PAI) and to determine factors associated with its failure. METHODS: The National Trauma Data Bank for 2002-2008 was reviewed. Patients with PAI were categorized as those who underwent successful SNOM (operative management not required) and those who failed SNOM (surgery required more than 4 h after admission). Yearly rates of SNOM versus non-therapeutic laparotomy (NTL) were plotted. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with failed SNOM and mortality. RESULTS: A total of 12 707 patients with abdominal gunshot and 13 030 with stab wounds were identified. Rates of SNOM were 22.2 per cent for gunshot and 33.9 per cent for stab wounds, and increased with time (P < 0.001). There was a strong correlation between the rise in SNOM and the decline in NTL (r = - 0.70). SNOM failed in 20.8 and 15.2 per cent of patients with gunshot and stab wounds respectively. Factors predicting failure included the need for blood transfusion (odds ratio (OR) 1.96, 95 per cent confidence interval 1.11 to 3.46) and a higher injury score. Failed SNOM was independently associated with mortality in both the gunshot (OR 4.48, 2.07 to 9.70) and stab (OR 9.83, 3.44 to 28.00) wound groups. CONCLUSION: The practice of SNOM is increasing, with an associated decrease in the rate of NTL for PAI. In most instances SNOM is successful; however, its failure is associated with increased mortality. Careful patient selection and adherence to protocols designed to decrease the failure rate of SNOM are recommended.

Six isolates of the purple non-sulfur bacteria, which upon primary isolation were naturally resistant to the herbicide atrazine, were characterized with respect to their taxonomic identity and the mechanism of their resistance. On the basis of electron microscopy, photopigment analysis, and other criteria, they were identified as strains of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, or Rhodocyclus gelatinosus. These isolates exhibited degrees of atrazine resistance which ranged from 1.5 to about 4 times greater than that of cognate reference strains (American Type Culture Collection) tested. Furthermore, all of the reference strains tested were more intrinsically resistant to atrazine than was Rhodobacter sphaeroides. No unique plasmids which might encode for herbicide degradation or inactivation were found in these isolates. Resistance to the herbicide in these isolates was not the result of diminished binding of the herbicide to the L subunit of the bacterial reaction center. Differences in herbicide resistance among the various species of this group may be the result of compositional and chemical differences in the individual reaction centers. However, the increase in atrazine resistance for the isolates characterized in this study probably occurs by undefined mechanisms and not necessarily by changes in the binding of the herbicide to the L subunit of the photosynthetic reaction center.

Tomato golden mosaic virus (TGMV), a member of the geminivirus group, has a genome consisting of two DNA molecules designated the A and B components. Both are required for infectivity in healthy plants, although the former has been shown to replicate independently in transgenic plants containing tandem direct repeats of the A genome component. In the studies presented here, petunia plants transgenic for either both components (A×B hybrids) or the A component alone were examined for the presence of virus particles and encapsidated, single stranded viral DNA. The results of DNase protection experiments and direct observation of extracts from transgenic plants by electron microscopy indicate that single stranded TGMV DNA is in both cases packaged into paired particles identical to those obtained from virus-infected plants. DNase-treated virions isolated from A×B hybrid petunia are infectious when inoculated onto healthy Nicotiana benthamiana. Likewise, virions obtained from transgenic A petunia are infectious for plants transgenic for the B component.Our observations of TGMV replication in transgenic plants indicate that TGMV A DNA encodes all viral functions necessary for the replication and encapsidation of viral DNA. The possible role of the B component in TGMV replication is discussed.

Several previous papers have indicated that MSH/ACTH-like neuropeptides facilitate the reversal of brightness discrimination in a runway task. The present experiment was undertaken to explore the development during both acquisition and reversal of stimulus control over an operant response. Male albino adult rats were treated daily with either 10 micrograms of MSH, 500 micrograms of corticosterone or a placebo in a double blind procedure during the establishment of an on-light control over availability of reinforcement. Having completed this regime the conditions were reversed so that reinforcement was present only when the chamber-light was off. The results indicated that treatment with MSH during acquisition produced a significant decrease in % correct responses compared to animals treated with either the placebo or corticosterone with neither of these latter groups differing from the other. During the reversal phase of training there was a trend for both MSH and corticosterone to lower % correct responses. The discussion focuses on other literature which has shown opposite effects of corticosterone on aversive and appetitively motivated tasks.
