RESUMEN

The effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements in patients with psoriasis vulgaris has previously been investigated, but interventions varied in source, composition, dose, administration route and duration of treatment. The observed beneficial effects in patients with psoriasis vulgaris using herring roe oil as a dietary supplement prompted this investigation. This randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled study was designed and performed to explore the efficacy and safety of herring roe oil supplementation in 64 patients with plaque psoriasis (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT03359577). The primary end-point was comparing the change in mean Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) scores in the herring roe oil treatment group and the placebo group from baseline to week 26. In the intention-to-treat population, a statistically significant improvement in the mean PASI score was observed with herring roe oil compared to placebo at 26 weeks. In the recruited patient group, the measured improvement was greatest in patients with a PASI score from 5.5-9.9 at baseline.

This randomized, single-blind, crossover trial assessed the bioavailability of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) from two different sources, each examined over a 12h period following consumption of a single serving and after 2-weeks of daily supplementation. Thirty-two adults with fasting triacylglycerol (TAG) concentrations between 100 and 399mg/dL were randomly assigned, with stratification by sex and age, to receive 12 capsules/day containing either phospholipid (PL)-rich herring roe oil (Romega® 30, 628mg/day EPA; 1810mg/day DHA; 137mg/day DPA) or TAG-rich fish oil (575mg/day EPA; 1843mg/day DHA; 259mg/day DPA) each for a 2-week period separated by a 4 week washout. The net incremental area under the curve from 0 to 12h for EPA, DHA, and EPA+DHA in plasma phosphatidylcholine (PC) were significantly higher (p<0.01 for all) after Romega 30 supplementation compared to fish oil. Similar results were observed when the data for the Romega 30 condition were normalized to fish oil EPA and DHA intakes (p<0.001 for all). After the 2-week supplementation period, fasting plasma PC EPA+ DHA was elevated by ~2.8 to 3.0-fold relative to baseline in both conditions (p<0.0001 for each), but there was no significant difference in the change from baseline (p=0.422) between Romega 30 (baseline=62.2±3.8µg/mL vs. end of study=172.9±11.7µg/mL) and fish oil (baseline=62.0±3.4µg/mL vs. end of study=185.4±11.2µg/mL) conditions. Similar results were observed for each individual LC n-3 PUFA in plasma PC after 2 weeks of supplementation. These data demonstrate that PL-rich herring roe is a well-tolerated and bioavailable source of LC n-3 PUFA.

The lipid characterization in tissues from the three deep-sea sharks leafscale gulper shark (Centrophorus squamosus), Portuguese dogfish (Centroscymnus coelolepis) and black dogfish (Centrocyllium fabricii) captured at Hatton Bank in the North Atlantic were examined. The objective was to determine the lipid content and the fatty acid composition in different tissues. In addition, the fatty acid composition in tissues and species was compared. The tissues examined were pancreas, heart, kidney, stomach, spleen and liver. The lipid content was high in liver (40-50%) and ranged from 1% to 5% in the other tissues. The dominant fatty acids were C16:0, C18:1 (n-9), C18:1 (n-7) and C22:6 (n-3) in all tissues. All tissues had a high content of unsaturated fatty acids.

The trans-10,cis-12 isomer of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) decreases TAG accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, reduces lipid accretion in growing animals, and inhibits milk fat synthesis in lactating mammals. However, there is evidence to suggest that other FA may also exert antilipogenic effects. In the current experiment, the effects of geometric isomers of 10,12 CLA on milk fat synthesis were examined using four Holstein-British Friesian cows in a 4 x 4 Latin Square experiment with 14-d periods. Treatments consisted of abomasal infusions of skim milk, or skim milk containing trans-10,cis-12 CLA (T1), trans-10,trans-12 CLA (T2), or a mixture of predominantly 10,12 isomers containing (g/l00 g) trans-10,cis-12 (35.0), cis-10,trans-12 (23.2), trans-10,trans-12 (14.9), and cis-10,cis-12 (5.1). CLA supplements were prepared from purified ethyl linoleate and infused as nonesterified FA. Infusions were conducted over a 4-d period with a 10-d interval between treatments and targeted to deliver 4.5 g/d of 10,12 CLA isomers. Compared with the control, trans-10, trans-12 CLA had no effect (P> 0.05) on milk fat yield, whereas treatments T1 and T3 depressed (P < 0.05) milk fat content (19.8 and 22.9%, respectively) and decreased milk fat output (20.8 and 21.3%, respectively). Comparable reductions in milk fat synthesis to 4.14 and 1.80 g trans-10,cis-12/d supplied by treatments T1 and T3 indicate that other 10,12 geometric isomers of CLA have the potential to exert antilipogenic effects. The relative abundance of cis-10,trans-12 CLA in treatment T3 and the low transfer efficiency of this isomer into milk suggest that cis-10,trans-12 CLA was the active component..
