RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Non-Candida albicans (NCA) species now account for a significant part of clinical candidiasis worldwide. In the present study, epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility profile of NCA isolated from various forms of candidiasis were studied with special focus on their phylogenetic relationship by ITS sequencing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-nine NCA isolates were isolated from skin and nail scrapings (67.0%), vaginal discharges (8.8%), blood (8.8%), sputa (5.0%), urine (5.0%), oral swabs (2.6%), biopsy and eye tumor, each (1.4%). These isolates were identified by morphological, biochemical and molecular (ITS sequencing) techniques. In vitro antifungal susceptibility of the isolates to fluconazole (FCZ) was tested according to the CLSI method (M27-S4). RESULTS: Among a total number of 79 cases of proven NCA infections, C. parapsilosis (36.8%) was the most prevalent species followed by C. glabrata (32.9%), C. orthopsilosis (11.4%), C. tropicalis (8.9%), C. krusei (5.0%) and C. guilliermondii (5.0%). The susceptibility to FCZ was assessed for C. parapsilosis (96.5%), C. orthopsilosis (88.9%), C. tropicalis (85.7%) and C. guilliermondii (50.0%). C. glabrata and C. krusei isolates were not susceptible to FCZ. NCA species were distributed in various phylogenetic clades including C. glabrata (1), C. tropicalis (3), C. parapsilosis (6) and C. orthopsilosis, C. krusei and C. guilliermondii (each 2). CONCLUSION: C. parapsilosis and C. glabrata were the most predominant NCA species involve in the etiology of candidiasis. C. orthopsilosis was reported from superficial candidiasis. Taken together, our results further substantiate the increasing importance of the involvement of NCA species in the etiology of candidiasis.

RESUMEN

A total of 936 one-day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) was used to evaluate the effects of dietary calcium (Ca) source (1.0 and 0.6% from Ca carbonate [CC], or 0.6% from Celtic sea minerals [CSM]) on broiler chick response to phytase supplementation (0, 500, or 2,500 FTU per kg of diet) in phosphorus (P) adequate diets. Birds were randomly assigned to 9 treatments, each replicated 8 times (4 repeats of male and 4 repeats of female birds; 13 birds per replicate) in a completely randomized design. Results showed that birds fed low Ca CC diets had significantly (P ≤ 0.05) lower body weight at 14 and 21 d; weight gain during 1 to 14 d; feed intake during 1 to 14 d and 1 to 28 d; and toe and tibia ash content, ileum ash, and Ca, and P contents at 28 days. Feed conversion ratio and feed intake between 21 and 28 d, and serum Ca, Fe, and alkaline phosphatase levels at 28 d of age were not affected by dietary Ca level. The negative influence of reducing the dietary Ca level on body weight and weight gain was less severe when CC was replaced with CSM, and birds fed the CSM diet had a significantly lower feed conversion ratio and higher tibia P content compared to CC. Phytase did not have a significant influence (P > 0.05) on most measured parameters, but significantly reduced ileum P and ash contents, especially at the higher level of 2,500 vs. 500 units of phytase per kg of diet. These results confirm that CSM has a valuable potential to improve feed conversion ratio, and that phytase was less effective in compensating for a significantly reduced dietary Ca level as it is for P.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of eucalyptus leaf powder (ELP) and eucalyptus essential oil (EEO) on growth performance and immune response of broiler chickens. A total of 160 broiler chicks were assigned randomly into five dietary treatments from 7-42 days of age. Dietary treatments included: a control diet, control diets plus 1,000 or 3,000 mg/kg of ELP, and control diets plus 250 or 500 mg/kg of EEO. Dietary inclusion of ELP decreased body weight gain (BWG) during 7-28 days of age. Broilers fed diet containing 3,000 mg/kg of ELP had lower feed intake (FI) during 7-28 days compared to the other treatments. Broilers fed ELP or EEO had greater primary antibody response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) compared to the control, but differences in secondary antibody response were not significant. In conclusion, dietary EEO has the potential to enhance immune response of broiler chickens.

RESUMEN

A novel poly propylene fumarate (PPF)-based glue which is reinforced by nanobioactive glass (NBG) particles and promoted by hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as crosslinker agent, was developed and investigated for bone-to-bone bonding applications. In-vitro bioactivity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and bone adhesion were tested and the results have verified that it can be used as bone glue. In an in-vitro condition, the prepared nanocomposite (PPF/HEMA/NBG) showed improved adhesion to wet bone surfaces. The combined tension and shear resistance between two wet bone surfaces was measured, and its maximum value was 9±59MPa. To investigate the bioactivity and biodegradability of the nanocomposite, it has been immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF). After 14days exposure to SBF, a hydroxyapatite (HA) layer formed on the surface of the composite confirms the bioactivity of this material. In the XRD pattern of the nanocomposite surface, the HA characteristic diffraction peak at θ=26 and 31.8 were observed. Also, by monitoring the weight change after 8weeks immersion in SBF, the mass loss was about 16.46wt%. It has been confirmed that this nanocomposite is a biodegradable material. Also, bioactivity and biodegradability of nanocomposite have been proved by SEM images. It has been showed that by using NBG particles and HEMA precursor, mechanical properties increased significantly. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of nanocomposite which contains 20% NBG and the ratio of 70/30wt% PPF/HEMA (PHB.732) was approximately 62MPa, while the UTS in the pure PPF/HEMA was about 32MPa. High cell viability in this nanocomposite (MTT assays, 85-95%) can be attributed to the NBG nature which contains calcium phosphate and is similar to physiological environment. Furthermore, it possesses biomineralization and biodegradation which significantly affected by impregnation of hydrophilic HEMA in the PPF-based polymeric matrix. The results indicated that the new synthesized biodegradable PPF/HEMA/NBG composite is suitable for biomedical applications especially as biodegradable bone glue in orthopedic surgeries.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Dermatophytosis is the most frequent fungal infection all over the world and its frequency is constantly increasing. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical features and epidemiological trends of dermatophytosis over the years 2010 to 2014 in Tehran, Iran. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 13,312 patients clinically suspected of cutaneous fungal infections were examined. Skin scales, plucked hairs, nail clippings and sub-ungual debris were examined by direct microscopy and culture. Dermatophyte species were identified at the species level by a combination of morphological and physiological criteria. RESULTS: Direct microscopy confirmed a contamination rate of 19.7% (2622/13,312 cases) of which 1535 cases (58.5%) were culture positive distributed in male (1022 cases) and female (513 cases). The most commonly infected age group was the 30-39 years old. Tinea pedis (30.4%) was the most prevalent type of dermatophytosis followed by tinea cruris (29.8%) and tinea corporis (15.8%). Epidermophyton floccosum (31%) was the most prevalent causative agent, followed by Trichophyton rubrum (26.2%) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (20.3%). CONCLUSION: Our results showed considerable distribution of dermatophytosis from zoophilic, anthropophilic and geophilic species among population with diverse age groups. Although anthropophilic fungi such as T. mentagrophytes, E. floccosum, and T. rubrum were the main etiologic agents of dermatophytosis, the prevalence of T. verrucosum showed a meaningful increase over the years, which highlights the importance of rural dermatophytosis mainly transmitted from large animals. This noticeable information improves our current knowledge about dermatophytosis and assists to establish effective prevention and therapeutic strategies to overcome the disease.

RESUMEN

AIM: Interrelationships between traditional dental variables are becoming more evident in far-reaching aspects of life such as psychosocial interaction, self-esteem, overall health and even occupational performance. This study compares quality of life in postmenopausal women with chronic periodontitis with that of healthy postmenopausal women. METHOD: A total of 128 randomly recruited postmenopausal women received a comprehensive periodontal evaluation and completed the Utian Quality of Life Survey. The participants were divided into healthy and periodontitis groups based on comprehensive periodontal examination. Mean scores were calculated for each quality-of-life item, domain and the overall summary score. Periodontitis patients' quality-of-life outcomes were compared to those of healthy patients using the t-test with threshold of significance at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Quality-of-life scores in all fields measured were significantly poorer in the periodontitis patients compared to the healthy patients, occupational (25.74 ± 8.25 vs. 21.40 ± 9.19), health (26.46 ± 5.93 vs. 19.64 ± 10.24), emotional (21.04 ± 10.20 vs. 16.40 ± 10.84), sexual (9.23 ± 4.92 vs. 5.96 ± 5.20), and total score (82.48 ± 23.74 vs. 63.69 ± 26.61). CONCLUSION: This study has identified that postmenopausal women with chronic periodontitis report significantly poorer quality of life than healthy patients. Clinicians caring for postmenopausal women should be aware that periodontitis also impacts quality of life when making referral decisions for oral health care.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Candidiasis is the most prevalent fungal infection affecting human and animals all over the world. This study represents the epidemiological aspects of superficial candidiasis in outpatients and in vitro antifungal susceptibility of etiologic Candida species. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical samples were taken from 173 patients including skin and nail scrapings (107; 61.8%), vaginal discharge (28; 16.2%), sputum (20; 11.6%), oral swabs (7; 4.0%), bronchoalveolar lavage (6; 3.5%) and 1 specimen (0.6%) of each eye tumor, gastric juice, urine, biopsy and urinary catheter and confirmed as candidiasis by direct microscopy, culture and histopathology. Susceptibility patterns of the isolated Candida species were determined using the disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods. RESULTS: Among 173 Candida isolates, C. albicans (72.3%) was the most prevalent species followed by C. parapsilosis (11.5%). Other identified species were C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. tropicalis, C. guilliermondii, C. intermedia and C. sake. Majority of the Candida isolates were susceptible to fluconazole (95.4%) followed by 5-flucytosine (89.6%), voriconazole (78.6%) itraconazole (48.0%) and ketoconazole (42.8%). Caspofungin was the most potent antifungal drug against C. albicans (MICs; 0.062-1 µg/mL), ketoconazole for C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis (MICs; 0.031-0.25 µg/mL) and itraconazole for C. krusei, C. glabrata and C. guilliermondii (MICs; 0.031-1 µg/mL). CONCLUSION: This study reinforces the significance of superficial candidiasis as an important fungal infection with multiple clinical presentations. Our results further indicate that susceptibility testing to commonly used antifungals is crucial in order to select the appropriate therapeutic strategies which minimize complications while improving patients' life.

RESUMEN

A simple solid phase extraction system based on the applying the nickel-aluminum layered double hydroxide (Ni-Al LDH) as a nano-sorbent was developed for the speciation analysis of chromium and manganese by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The method is based on the fact that Cr(VI) and Mn(VII) oxyanions could be adsorbed on the Ni-Al(NO(3)(-)) LDH and/or exchanged with LDH interlayer NO(3)(-) ions at pH 6.0, whereas Cr(III) and Mn(II) cations pass through the LDH-packed column without retention. The determinations of total Cr and Mn, and hence indirectly Cr(III) and Mn(II), involve the pre-oxidations of Cr(III) and Mn(II) to Cr(VI) and Mn(VII) with H(2)O(2) and acidic solution of KIO(4), respectively. Several important factors affecting the retention efficiency were investigated and optimized. In the optimum experimental conditions, the limits of detection (3S(b)/m) for Cr(VI) and Mn(VII) were 0.51 and 0.47 ng mL(-1), and the relative standard deviations were 2.5 and 3.2% (C=30.0 ng mL(-1), n=6), respectively. The presented method was validated by the analysis of a certified reference material, and applied to the speciation of Cr and Mn in drinking waters, surface waters and industrial wastewater effluents.

RESUMEN

Foxtail millet is well-suited to climatic conditions in semi-arid tropic regions where it is cultivated using both agro-ecologic and conventional cultivation practices. This study evaluated the nutritional value, digestibility, and physiological effects of agro-ecologic and conventionally cultivated foxtail millet in comparison with corn. Chemical and TME(n) analysis of foxtail millet cultivated conventionally and agro-ecologically indicated similar nutritional value. In total, 432 eight-day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks, using a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, were randomly assigned to 4 replicate pens for each of 6 isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets. Experimental diets were formulated by replacing corn with conventional or agro-ecologic millet at 3 levels (33, 66, or 100% of corn replacement). Body weight at 21 and 42 d of age was higher (P < 0.05) at 100% millet inclusion versus the lower inclusion levels. At 42 d of age, feed intake and feed conversion ratios were also improved (P < 0.05) at the 100% millet inclusion level. Similarly, the apparent ileal digestibility of CP increased (P < 0.05) for 100% millet diets. There were no differences in ileal digestibility of nutrients between millet growth conditions. Millet inclusion level significantly affected small intestinal morphology such that crypt depth was lowest (P < 0.05) in the 100% inclusion group for duodenum, jejunum, and ileum at 28 d of age, and for duodenum and ileum at 42 d of age. The villus crypt ratio was also highest (P < 0.05) in the 100% millet inclusion group for jejunum and ileum at 28 d of age, and duodenum, jejunum, and ileum at 42 d of age. Millet growth condition did not markedly affect small intestinal morphology. Serum antibody responses to Gumboro and Newcastle diseases were not affected by millet inclusion level or growth condition. In conclusion, foxtail millet could be considered as an alternate cereal for inclusion in the diet of broiler chickens. Broiler chicken performance and physiological responses to foxtail millet were similar whether grown conventionally or using agro-ecologic practices.

RESUMEN

The nickel-aluminum layered double hydroxide (Ni-Al LDH) was synthesized by a simple co-precipitation method and used as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for separation and pre-concentration of trace levels of salicylic acid (SA) from aqueous solutions. Extraction of analyte is based on the adsorption of salicylate ions on the Ni-Al (NO(3)(-)) LDH and/or their exchanging with LDH interlayer NO(3)(-) ions. The retained analyte on the LDH was stripped by 3 mol L(-1) NaOH solution and its concentration was subsequently determined spectrofluorometrically at λ(em)=400 nm with excitation at λ(ex)=270 nm. Various parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of SA on the Ni-Al (NO(3)(-)) LDH, such as pH, amount of nano-sorbent, sample loading flow rate, elution conditions, sample volume and matrix effects were investigated. In the optimum experimental conditions, the limit of detection (3s) and enrichment factor were 0.12 µg L(-1) and 40, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for six replicate determinations of 10 µg L(-1) SA was 2.3%. The calibration graph using the pre-concentration system was linear in the range of 0.3-45 µg L(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9985. The optimized method was successfully applied to the determination of SA in blood serum, willow leaf and aspirin tablet.

RESUMEN

The nickel-aluminum layered double hydroxide (Ni-Al LDH) was synthesized by a simple co-precipitation method with controlled pH and followed by hydrothermal treatment. The obtained nano-structured inorganic material was employed, for the first time, as a new solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent for the extraction and pre-concentration of trace levels of fluoride ions from aqueous solutions. An indirect method was used for monitoring of extracted fluoride ions. The method is based on the quenching effect of extracted fluoride ions upon the fluorescence intensity of Al-oxine complex via the forming of AlF(6)(3-), which was determined spectrofluorometrically at λ(em)=510 nm with excitation at λ(ex)=404 nm. The effect of several parameters such as type of interlayer anion in Ni-Al LDH structure, pH, sample flow rate, elution conditions, amount of nano-sorbent, sample volume and co-existing ions on the extraction efficiency of the analyte were investigated. The results showed that fluoride ions could be retained on the Ni-Al (NO(3)(-)) LDH at pH 6.0 and stripped by 1.2 mL of 3.0 mol L(-1) NaOH. In the optimum experimental conditions, the limit of detection (3s) and enrichment factor were 9.0 ng mL(-1) and 50, respectively. The optimized method was successfully applied to the determination of fluoride concentration in various water samples. The results obtained from the proposed method were successfully compared with those provided by standard SPADNS method.

RESUMEN

In this research, we combined ionic liquid-based dispersive liquid-liquid micro-extraction (IL-based DLLME) with stopped-flow spectrofluorometry (SFS) to evaluate the concentration of aluminum in different real samples at trace level. 1-Hexylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate [Hpy][PF(6)] ionic liquid and 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine), which forms a highly fluorescent complex with Al(3+), were chosen as the extraction solvent and chelating agent, respectively. The hydrophobic Al-oxine complex was extracted into the [Hpy][PF(6)] and separated from the aqueous phase. Then, the concentration of the enriched aluminum in the sediment phase was determined by SFS. Some effective parameters that influence the SFS signals and the micro-extraction efficiency, such as the suction and sending time, the concentration of the chelating agent, pH, the amount of the ionic liquid, the type of disperser solvent and diluting agent, ionic strength, extraction time, equilibration temperature and centrifugation time were investigated and optimized. In the optimum experimental conditions, the limit of detection (3s) and enrichment factor were 0.05microgL(-1) and 100, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for six replicate determinations of 6microgL(-1) Al was 1.7%. The calibration graph using the pre-concentration system was linear in the range of 0.06-15microgL(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9989. The developed method was validated by the analysis of certified reference materials and applied successfully to the determination of aluminum in several water, fruit juice and food samples.

RESUMEN

A simple dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction methodology based on the application of 1-hexylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate [HPy][PF6] ionic liquid (IL) as an extractant solvent was proposed for the preconcentration of trace levels of zinc as a prior step to determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Zinc was complexed with 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) and extracted into ionic liquid. Some effective factors that influence the microextraction efficiency such as pH, oxine concentration, amount of IL, ionic strength, temperature and centrifugation time were investigated and optimized. In the optimum experimental conditions, the limit of detection (3 s) and the enhancement factor were 0.22 microg L(-1) and 71, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for six replicate determinations of 13 microg L(-1) Zn was 1.92%. In order to validate the developed method, a certified reference material (NIST SRM 1549) was analyzed and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values. The proposed method was successfully applied to the trace determination of zinc in water and milk samples.

RESUMEN

Thirty-five male Afshari lambs (3.5 months old), with an average weight of 35 kg were randomly assigned to one of five experimental treatments relating to optimal replacement level of rice bran in lamb finishing diets. The lambs were fed a milled concentrate (3 mm screen) diet supplemented with 15% (DM basis) chopped (5 cm length) lucerne hay and chopped (5 cm length) maize silage or wet (80% moisture) sugar beet pulp. Barley grain in the lambs' diets was replaced by rice bran at either 0, 15, 30, 45 or 60% of the concentrate mixture on a dry matter basis. Results show that lambs fed 45 and 60% rice bran treatments weighed significantly less than those fed with 15 and 30% and control group (P < 0.05). Average daily gain in lambs fed with concentrate mixtures containing 45 and 60% rice bran were 33 and 47% lower than control, respectively (P < 0.05). Lambs that received diets containing 45 and 60% rice bran, had lower feed intake (P < 0.05) than other groups. Using rice bran in the finishing diet had no significant effect on dressing percentage, tail percentage, abdominal fat and visceral organ weights. These results suggest that barley can be replaced with rice bran up to 30% in the finishing diets of lambs without any adverse effect on lamb performance.

RESUMEN

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of soaking in water and different rumen digesta solutions on nutritional value of dry barley seeds. Treatments were included distilled water as control and rumen digesta that diluted with distilled water to obtain 20, 40 and 60% digesta solutions. Solutions have added to 10 kg of barley seed samples to achieve final 30% moisture content. After 21 days the chemical composition and energy content of barley seed were determined. Gross energy of barley seeds did not affected by different experimental treatments. Use of 20% rumen digesta solution resulted to a significant (p<0.01) increase in AME and AMEn content of barley seeds. Barley seed that treated with 40% of rumen digesta solution had highest TME and TMEn content and its different from seeds that treated with 60 and 100% rumen digesta solutions was significant (p<0.05). The chemical composition such as dry matter, crud protein, crude fat, crud fiber, ash and NFE were found to be similar and there was no significant difference. However, soaking in rumen digesta solutions increased crud protein, ether extract, crude fiber and ash content of barley seeds numerically.
