RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of ozone and low-level-laser therapy (LLLT) on postoperative pain after root canal treatment in symptomatic apical periodontitis on vital teeth. Eighty patients were divided into four groups using a web program as follows: LLLT placebo (mock laser therapy), LLLT, Ozone placebo (mock ozonated water irrigation), and Ozone. Postoperative pain levels for 7 days after treatment and percussion pain levels at the 7th day were recorded on the visual analog scale. A regression analysis, Cochran's Q test, Chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to analyze the data (P=.05). A regression analysis demonstrated that the most effective variables are "group" and "jaw" (P=0.01). Pain in the lower jaw is higher than the upper jaw. There was difference between the groups on postoperative pain at the days 1, 2, and 3; however, there was no significant difference on other days. LLLT and ozone groups had less postoperative pain and pain on percussion. Low-level laser and ozone therapy are useful methods on postoperative-pain in vital symptomatic teeth ,but they don't have superiority to each other.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Although living kidney donors have a minimal lifetime risk of developing end-stage renal disease, long-term complications and physiologic and psychologic sequelae resulting from donation remain unclear because of lack of optimum follow-up after transplant. Here, we evaluated renal function, complications, and physical and mental performance of living kidney donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 147 patients who donated living kidneys between 1981 and 2012 at Baskent University Hospital. We collected data on donor age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, hypertension before and after nephrectomy, proteinuria, estimated glomerular filtration rate according to the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease formula, and duration after donation. All donors answered the Medical Outcomes Study short-form general health survey; results were evaluated according to answers to 11 questions totaling 22 points. RESULTS: Body mass index of donors showed that 31 (21.1%) were in normal range, 66 (44.9%) had mild obesity (body mass index of 26-30 kg/m²), and 30 (34%) had moderate to high obesity (body mass index > 30 kg/m2). Results from the general health survey showed that 117 donors (80%) had no loss, 13 (9%) had mild loss, 12 (8%) had moderate loss, and 5 (3%) had high loss of ability. When we compared estimated glomerular filtration rates according to donor age, donors who were 18 to 34 years had a mean estimated glomerular filtration rate of 113.5 ± 40, donors 35 to 49 years had a mean rate of 95.01 ± 23.4, donors 50 to 64 years had a mean rate of 87.43 ± 25.4, and donors older than 65 years had a mean rate of 63.76 ± 11.35 mL/min/1.73 m², revealing a statistically significant loss of kidney function with aging (P = .001).. CONCLUSIONS: Careful evaluation of kidney donors before and after donation is essential for the most common risk factors, such as obesity, and for loss of kidney function, especially in older donors.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose was to determine the perceived social support and psychological symptoms of adolescents with leukemia. DESIGN AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 70 adolescents with leukemia. The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MPSSS), and a demographical data form were used for data collection. RESULTS: Scores of the Global Severity Index, Positive Symptom Distress Index (PSDI), and Positive Symptom Total (PST) of the BSI were higher than those of the healthy adolescents with the same age in other studies. There was a negative relationship between the MPSSS and negative self-image, depression, anxiety, PSDI, and PST of the BSI. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: It would likely be beneficial to increase adolescents' perceived social support in order to decrease psychological symptoms.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Increased viscosity may increase the risk of thrombosis or thromboembolic events. Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) is the key stone treatment in anemic ESRD patients with the thrombotic limiting side effect. We evaluated the influence of clinical and laboratory findings on plasma viscosity in MHD patients in the present study. METHOD: After applying exclusion criteria 84 eligible MHD patients were included (30 female, age: 54.7 ± 13.7 years). RESULTS: Patients with high viscosity had longer MHD history, calcium × phosphorus product, and higher rHuEPO requirement (356.4 versus 204.2 U/kg/week, P: 0.006). rHuEPO hyporesponsiveness was also more common in hyperviscosity group. According to HD duration, no rHuEPO group had the longest and the low rHuEPO dosage group had the shortest duration. Despite similar Hb levels, 68% of patients in high rHuEPO dosage group; and 38.7% of patients in low rHuEPO dosage group had higher plasma viscosity (P: 0.001). Patients with hyperviscosity had higher rHuEPO/Hb levels (P: 0.021). Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that rHuEPO hyporesponsiveness was the major determinant of hyperviscosity. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the hyperviscous state of the hemodialysis patients may arise from the inflammatory situation of long term HD, the calcium-phosphorus mineral abnormalities, rHuEPO hyporesponsiveness, and related high dosage requirements.
