RESUMEN

The determination of the atomic configuration of metallic glasses is a long-standing problem in materials science and solid-state physics. So far, only average structural information derived from diffraction and spectroscopic methods has been obtained. Although various atomic models have been proposed in the past fifty years, a direct observation of the local atomic structure in disordered materials has not been achieved. Here we report local atomic configurations of a metallic glass investigated by nanobeam electron diffraction combined with ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. Distinct diffraction patterns from individual atomic clusters and their assemblies, which have been theoretically predicted as short- and medium-range order, can be experimentally observed. This study provides compelling evidence of the local atomic order in the disordered material and has important implications in understanding the atomic mechanisms of metallic-glass formation and properties.

RESUMEN

Pd nanostructures have been synthesized by electrochemical deposition in a highly diluted solution. The morphology of the as-synthesized Pd nanostructures can be solely controlled by depositing potentials because the driving force for variable crystal nucleation and growth is only correlated with overpotentials. The as-prepared Pd nanostructures deposited at -0.25 V show a 3D feather-like dendritic morphology with a nanoscale structure, which exhibits high electrocatalysis activity towards ethanol electro-oxidation in alkaline media. Moreover, the present electrochemical method can be easily applied to fabricate other noble metal nanostructures.

RESUMEN

The influence of Nisaplin, which contains 2.5% nisin, on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in Karashi-mentaiko (red-pepper seasoned cod roe) was investigated. The MICs of Nisaplin for L. monocytogenes (10(8) CFU/mL) were measured; seven isolates showed a value of 1,600 microg/mL and one isolate showed a value of 800 microg/mL. All L. monocytogenes isolates had a MIC of 800 microg/mL at 10(6) CFU/mL. The number of L. monocytogenes in Karashi-mentaiko stored at 4 degrees C was decreased by Nisaplin added at 60 and 600 microg/g. These results indicated that Nisaplin effectively inhibits the growth of L. monocytogenes in Karashi-mentaiko.

RESUMEN

The performance of microfabricated piezoresistive cantilever array sensors has been evaluated using various vapors of volatile organic compounds including alkanes with different chain length from 5 (n-pentane) to 14 (n-tetradecane). We demonstrate that piezoresistive microcantilever array sensors have the selectivity of discriminating individual alkanes in a homologous series as well as common volatile organic compounds according to principal component analysis. We developed a new method to evaluate the sensitivity, taking advantage of the low vapor pressures of alkanes with longer chains, such as n-dodecane, n-tridecane and n-tetradecane, under saturated vapor conditions. This method reveals sub-ppm sensitivity and the cantilever response is found to follow the mass of evaporated analytes as calculated using a quantitative model based on the Langmuir evaporation model.

RESUMEN

Suppression of nucleation around a gold electrode during pentacene growth on a SiO2 channel is found by photoemission electron microscopy. Mass flow is driven by the difference between the molecular orientations on SiO2 and gold. The poor connectivity at the channel/electrode boundary causes degradation in the performance of a field-effect transistor, which is found to be improved by self-assembled monolayer treatment on the electrode (see figure; thickness in monolayers (ML)).

RESUMEN

We have measured one-dimensional (1D) plasmons in an atom wire array on the Si(557)-Au surface by inelastic scattering of a highly collimated slow electron beam. The angular dependence of the excitation energy clearly indicates the strong 1D confinement and free propagation of the plasma wave along the wire. The observed plasmon dispersion is explained very well by a quantum-mechanical scheme which takes into account dynamic exchange-correlation effects, interwire interactions, and spin-orbit splitting of the 1D bands. Although the qualitative feature of the plasmon dispersion is reminiscent of that of a high-density free-electron gas, we detected the substantial influence of electron correlation due to strong 1D confinement.

RESUMEN

Shear bands generally initiate strain softening and result in low ductility of metallic glasses. In this Letter, we report high-resolution electron microscope observations of shear bands in a ductile metallic glass. Strain softening caused by localized shearing was found to be effectively prevented by nanocrystallization that is in situ produced by plastic flow within the shear bands, leading to large plasticity and strain hardening. These atomic-scale observations not only well explain the extraordinary plasticity that was recently observed in some bulk metallic glasses, but also reveal a novel deformation mechanism that can effectively improve the ductility of monolithic metallic glasses.

RESUMEN

We compared T-cell responses to regions in residues 21-40 of A and B variants of bovine milk beta-lactoglobulin (beta-LG) that vary by two different amino acid residues at 64 and 118. Results showed that T cells from C57/BL6 and C3H/HeN mice immunized with peptide 21-40 or BALB/c mice immunized with peptide 21-32 or 25-40 responded more vigorously to beta-LG B than to beta-LG A. This difference in response to 25-40 in BALB/c mice was not observed when beta-LGs B and A were denatured, suggesting that the conformation difference affects display of the determinant 25-40. Reactivity of anti-beta-LG monoclonal antibodies and molecular modeling using molecular dynamics calculations revealed subtle differences in the three-dimensional structure of these two variants. Furthermore, substitution of two amino acid residues at sites distant from the T-cell determinant induced differential determinant display on antigen-presenting cells, possibly due to subtle conformational changes in beta-LG.
