RESUMEN

The underlying study was carried out aiming at transdermal drug delivery (TDD) of Goniothalamus macrophyllus as sono-photo-sensitizer (SPS) using microneedle (MN) arrays with iontophoresis (MN-IP), electroporation (MN-EP) in conjunction with applying photodynamic therapy (PDT), sonodynamic therapy (SDT) and sono-photodynamic therapy (SPDT) as an up-to-date activated cancer treatment modality. Study was conducted on 120 male Swiss Albino mice, inoculated with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) divided into 9 groups. We employed three different arrays of MN electrodes were used (parallel, triangular, and circular), EP, IP with different volts (6, 9, 12 V), an infrared laser and an ultrasound (pulsed and continuous wave) as our two energy sources. Results revealed that parallel 6 V TDD@MN@IP@EP can be used as effective delivery system for G. macrophyllus from skin directly to target EAC cells. In addition MN@IP@EP@TDD G. macrophyllus is a potential SPS for SPDT treatment of EAC. With respect to normal control mice and as opposed to the EAC untreated control mice, MN@EP@IP TDD G. macrophyllus in the laser, ultrasound, and combination activated groups showed a significant increase in the antioxidant markers TAC level and the GST, GR, Catalase, and SOD activities, while decrease in lipid peroxidation oxidative stress parameter MDA levels. In addition significantly increased apoptotic genes expressions (p53, caspase (3, 9), Bax, and TNF alpha) and on the other hand decreased anti- apoptotic (Bcl-2) and angiogenic (VEGF) genes expressions. Moreover significantly ameliorate liver and kidney function decreasing ALT, AST, urea and creatinine respectively. Furthermore MN@IP@EP@TDD G. macrophyllus combined with SPDT was very effective at reducing the growth of tumors and even causing cell death according to microscopic H&E stain results. This process may be related to a sono- and/or photochemical activation mechanism. According to the findings, MN@IP@EP@TDD G. macrophyllus has a lot of potential as a novel, efficient delivery method that in combination with infrared laser and ultrasound activation SPDT demonstrated promising anticancer impact for treating cancer.

Scientific backgrounds: Development of nanostructured biodegradable alloys has generated a great deal of interest in the recent years as they offer promising bioactive materials for reconstruction of bony defects following traumatic fractures or surgical excision of tumors. Objectives: The aim of the current study was to investigate the biocompatibility of Iron-Manganese -based alloys (Fe-Mn) with addition of copper (Cu), Tungsten (W) and cobalt (Co) to obtain 3 different alloys namely, Fe-Mn-Cu, Fe-Mn-W, and Fe-Mn-Co on normal oral epithelial cell line,and their possible anticancer effect on MG-63: osteosarcoma cell line. Materials and methods: The sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay was used to assess cell viability percentage of both cell lines after exposure to discs of the proposed experimental alloys. Moreover, the antibacterial effect of such alloys against Escherichia coli (E. coli) was tested using disc diffusion susceptibility (Kirby-Bauer method) and colony suspension method. Results: The cell viability percentage of oral epithelial cell line showed a significant increase in all the experimental groups in comparison to the control group. The highest percentage was observed in Fe-Mn-Co group, followed by Fe-Mn-W then Fe-Mn-Cu, at 24 and 72-h intervals, respectively. While the cell viability percentage of osteosarcoma cell line showed significant increase in all the experimental groups at 24-h intervals, it showed a significant drop in all the study groups at 72-h intervals. The lowest percentage was observed in Fe-Mn-Cu group, followed by Fe-Mn-W then Fe-Mn-Co. Moreover, all the examined study groups didn't show any inhibition zones against E. coli reference culture. Conclusions: The novel nanostructured biodegradable Fe-Mn-Cu, Fe-Mn-W, and Fe-Mn-Co metal alloys exhibit good biocompatibility on oral epithelial cell lines with the enhancement of cell proliferation in a time-dependent manner that favors bone regeneration. On the other hand, all the alloys manifested possible anticancer activity against MG-63: osteosarcoma cell line. Furthermore, our study sheds the light on the importance of Co, W and Cu as promising alloying elements. However, the antibacterial activity of the examined alloys is still questionable. Clinical relevance: The novel nanostructured biodegradable Fe-Mn-Cu, Fe-Mn-W, and Fe-Mn-Co metal alloys offer promising bioactive materials for reconstruction of bony defects following traumatic fractures or surgical excision of tumors, In addition, they could be excellent alternatives for undegradable or non-resorbable alloys that are commonly used. Moreover, they could be used as beneficial 3D printing materials to obtain patient-specific medical implants that favor bone regeneration in addition to manufacturing of plates and screws suitable for fracture fixation.

BACKGROUND: Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) is a common and disturbing issue in the postmenopausal period. Unlike vasomotor symptoms, it has a progressive trend. Our study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of oxytocin gel versus placebo gel in postmenopausal women with GSM. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis synthesizing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from Web of Science, SCOPUS, PubMed, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases on January 18, 2023. Keywords such as "oxytocin," "intravaginal," "vaginal," "atrophic," and "atrophy" were used. We used Review Manager (RevMan) version 5.4 in our analysis. We used the risk ratio (RR) for dichotomous outcomes and the mean difference (MD) for continuous outcomes; both were presented with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) and were calculated with the Mantel-Haenszel or inverse variance statistical method. Cochrane's Q test and the I2 statistic were used as measures of statistical inconsistency and heterogeneity. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for RCTs was used for the quality assessment of the included studies. RESULTS: Seven studies with 631 patients were included. Regarding the maturation index, there was a statistically insignificant increase in the oxytocin arm (MD = 12.34, 95% CI (-12.52-37.19), P = 0.33). Clinically assessed vaginal atrophy showed a statistically significant reduction in the oxytocin group (RR = 0.32, 95% CI (0.23 - 0.10), P < 0.00001). For dyspareunia, vaginal pH, and histological evaluation of vaginal atrophy, there was a statistically insignificant difference between the two groups (RR = 1.02, 95% CI (0.82-1.27), P = 0.84), (MD = -0.74, 95% CI (-1.58-0.10), P = 0.08), and (MD = -0.38, 95% CI (-0.82-0.06), P = 0.09), respectively. There was no significant difference in the safety profile between the two groups as measured by endometrial thickness (MD = 0.00, 95% CI (-0.23-0.23), P = 0.99). CONCLUSIONS: Although oxytocin has been proposed as a viable alternative to estrogen in the treatment of GSM, our findings show the opposite. Larger, high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm or refute our results. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO registration number CRD42022334357.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Most patients with heart failure (HF) are diagnosed following a hospital admission. The clinical and health economic impacts of index HF diagnosis made on admission to hospital versus community settings are not known. METHODS: We used the North West London Discover database to examine 34 208 patients receiving an index diagnosis of HF between January 2015 and December 2020. A propensity score-matched (PSM) cohort was identified to adjust for differences in socioeconomic status, cardiovascular risk and pre-diagnosis health resource utilisation cost. Outcomes were stratified by two pathways to index HF diagnosis: a 'hospital pathway' was defined by diagnosis following hospital admission; and a 'community pathway' by diagnosis via a general practitioner or outpatient services. The primary clinical and health economic endpoints were all-cause mortality and cost-consequence differential, respectively. RESULTS: The diagnosis of HF was via hospital pathway in 68% (23 273) of patients. The PSM cohort included 17 174 patients (8582 per group) and was matched across all selected confounders (p>0.05). The ratio of deaths per person-months at 24 months comparing community versus hospital diagnosis was 0.780 (95% CI 0.722 to 0.841, p<0.0001). By 72 months, the ratio of deaths was 0.960 (0.905 to 1.020, p=0.18). Diagnosis via hospital pathway incurred an overall extra longitudinal cost of £2485 per patient. CONCLUSIONS: Index diagnosis of HF through hospital admission continues to dominate and is associated with a significantly greater short-term risk of mortality and substantially increased long-term costs than if first diagnosed in the community. This study highlights the potential for community diagnosis-early, before symptoms necessitate hospitalisation-to improve both clinical and health economic outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a subtype of lung cancer, the second most common cancer diagnosis worldwide. Currently, there is little published qualitative research that provides insight into the disease-related symptoms and impacts that are relevant to patients living with SCLC as directly reported by patients themselves. METHODS: This qualitative, cross-sectional, noninterventional, descriptive study included concept elicitation interviews with participants diagnosed with SCLC and the development of a conceptual model of clinical treatment benefit. RESULTS: Concept elicitation interview data from 26 participants with SCLC were used to develop a conceptual model of clinical treatment benefit that organized 28 patient-reported concepts into two domains: disease-related symptoms (organ-specific and systemic) and impacts. Organ-specific symptoms included cough, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. Systemic symptoms included pain, fatigue, appetite loss, and dizziness. Impacts included physical functioning, role functioning, reduced movement, impact on sleep, and weight loss. CONCLUSION: As evidenced by this study, people with SCLC experience considerable and significant symptoms and impacts, including physical and role functioning challenges, that affect their quality of life. This conceptual model will inform the design of a patient-reported outcome (PRO) questionnaire for a future SCLC clinical trial, helping to establish the content validity of the items and questionnaires used in the trial and ensuring that the questionnaires and items selected are appropriately targeted to the population. This conceptual model could also be used to inform future SCLC clinical trials.

Graphene based nanomaterials are explored in the field of cancer bioimaging and biomedical science and engineering. The luminescent nanostructures with a low toxicity and high photostability can be used as probes in bioimaging applications. This work is aimed to prepare graphene/folic acid-zinc oxide (GN/FA-ZnO) nanocomposite with dual-mode emissions (down-conversion and up-conversion) to be used in cancer bioimaging. The dual mode emissions offer long luminescence lifetime, multicolor emissions detected by the naked eyes after excitation and narrow band absorption and emission spectra. ZnO nanospheres and nanorods structures were prepared using co-precipitation technique and were conjugated with FA to separate the bulk graphite layers electrostatically into GN. The optical, morphological, surface charge and structural properties of the prepared nanostructures were investigated and discussed using different characterization techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), Zeta potential, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). GN/FA-ZnO nanocomposites were injected into Swiss albino mice implanted with Ehrlich Tumor and the bioimaging was investigated using photon imager and digital camera. The results showed clear fluorescence and confirmed that the green design of GN/FA-ZnO nanocomposite with targeting behavior was capable of selective bioimaging of the tumor. This study presented a novel dual mode emission nanocomposite for tumor targeting and is a promising strategy for the fabrication of a new design of spectral encoding.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal myeloproliferative disorder. CML cells contain a BCR-ABL gene, not typically found in normal cells that produce a protein (BCR-ABL) causing CML cells to proliferate. CML occurs in three phases: chronic, accelerated and blast crisis. Disease staging is primarily based on percent of blasts in the blood and bone marrow. Most cases of CML are diagnosed in chronic phase (CP). The major objective in CML clinical management is to prevent progression from chronic to accelerated and blast crisis phases. While earlier treatments, such as cytoreductive chemo- and interferon therapies increased overall survival rates among patients, the advent of tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have changed the CML treatment landscape. Despite the widespread use of these therapies, there have also been associated side effects that could potentially affect its use. Also it is necessary to avoid all deaths and complications related to the treatment, by limiting as much as possible the side-effects of the treatment while ensuring the compliance of the patients. The aim of this work was to measure the serum estrogen and its soluble receptor levels in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in order to extrapolate their possible clinical significance. The present study included 40 (20 males and 20 females) healthy volunteers clinically free from any disease, 40 (20 males and 20 females) patients of newly diagnosed CML. Blood samples were collected from all subjects and the level of serum estrogen (E2) and serum soluble estrogen receptor (ER) were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The level of serum E2 (pg/ml) in both male and female patients groups with CML was significantly higher than in control group. The level of serum ER (ng/ml) in both male and female patients groups with CML was significantly lower than in control group. Estimating the serum level of E2 and soluble ER is of informative diagnostic value. Estimation serum level of E2 and soluble ER in patients with CML is of value in deciding use of antiestrogen as therapeutic target in treatment protocol. Using the auto combustion flash method, Ni1-x+2Mgx+2Fe2+3O4 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.6, 0.8 and 1) nano-ferrites were synthesized. All samples were thermally treated at 973 K for 3 h. The structural analysis for the synthesized samples was performed using XRD, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and FTIR. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was undertaken to explore the surface morphology of all the samples. The thermal stability of these samples was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD data show the presence of a single spinel phase for all the prepared samples. The intensity of the principal peak of the spinel phase decreases as Mg content increases, showing that Mg delays crystallinity. The Mg content raised the average grain size (D) from 0.084 µm to 0.1365 µm. TGA shows two stages of weight loss variation. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement shows that magnetic parameters, such as initial permeability (µi) and saturation magnetization (Ms), decay with rising Mg content. The permeability and magnetic anisotropy at different frequencies and temperatures were studied to show the samples' magnetic behavior and determine the Curie temperature (TC), which depends on the internal structure. The electrical resistivity behavior shows the semi-conductivity trend of the samples. Finally, the dielectric constant increases sharply at high temperatures, explained by the increased mobility of charge carriers, and decreases with increasing frequency.

MnP-YC4, a newly constructed manganese peroxidase-producing yeast consortium, has been developed to withstand lignin degradation inhibitors while degrading and detoxifying azo dye. MnP-YC4 tolerance to major biomass-derived inhibitors was promising. MnP induced by lignin was found to be highly related to dye decolorization by MnP-YC4. Simulated azo dye-containing wastewater supplemented with a lignin co-substrate (3,5-Dimethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde) decolorized up to 100, 91, and 76% at final concentrations of 20, 40, and 60%, respectively. MnP-YC4 effectively decolorized the real textile wastewater sample, reaching up to 91.4%, and the COD value decreased significantly during the decolorization, reaching 7160 mg/l within 7 days. A possible dye biodegradation pathway was proposed based on the degradation products identified by UV-vis, FTIR, GC/MS, and HPLC techniques, beginning with azo bond cleavage and eventually mineralized to CO2 and H2O. When compared to the phytotoxic original dye, the phytotoxicity of MnP-YC4 treated dye-containing wastewater samples confirmed the nontoxic nature.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of the glenoid fossa as an anchorage for the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc repositioning in patients with a disc displacement (DD) without reduction. A prospective case series study included patients with DD without reduction. According to the Wilkes staging system for the TMJ internal derangement, preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and clinical examinations determine the stage of the DD. The discopexy treatment consists of combined endaural/preauricular incision on the tragus, and freeing the anteromedial displaced disc from its attachments. An intra bony hole was drilled 2 mm away from the postero-lateral lip of the glenoid fossa and perpendicular to it. The disc was securely fixed to the roof of the fossa via a Prolene 0 suture in a double-pass suture fashion. The functional assessment was based on the pain visual analogue scale (VAS) and measurements of the maximum inter-incisal opening (MIO) after 1, 6, 12, and 18 months. P values ≤ 0.05 were considered significant. Thirteen of 25 joints were diagnosed with Wilkes stage III. The mean VAS score significantly decreased to 2.2 ± 1.0 and the MIO also significantly improved with a mean of 35.9 ± 3.5 mm after 18 months (P < 0.001). The rest of the cases (12 joints) were diagnosed with Wilkes stage IV, and the VAS score decreased to 1.6 ± 0.7. The MIO increased to 34.2 ± 3.3 mm at the end of the follow-up (P < 0.001). Within the limitations of the study, it seems that using the glenoid fossa as anchorage for the TMJ disc might have some clinical relevance and therefore might be taken into consideration whenever it is deemed appropriate.

The aim of this study is to perform a retrospective analysis of the feasibility of the clinical application of SLNB using methylene blue dye (MBD) for the identification of SLN followed by frozen section biopsy to detect occult metastasis in clinically N0 necks. Hence, to know the reliability of MBD in reducing the need for extensive surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinic pathological data of 48 patients with early oral cancer.The SLN identification rate (IR) was calculated in SLNB with MBD and the false-negative rate (FNR). Intra operative frozen section biopsy was done for all patients was compared with post-operative paraffin histopathology report and the prognosis of patients was analyzed. RESULTS: Analysis of the 48 SLNB cases showed that there were significant differences in SLN successful detection rate among patients with different site (p = 0.043) and clinical presentation (p = 0.007). Similar significant results (p < 0.05) were observed with intra-operative frozen and post-operative paraffin histopathology sections. SLNs were successfully detected in 37(77.1%) patients out of 48. The intra operative frozen histopathology completely matched with the post-operative paraffin histopathology showing 39 (81.2%) negative and 09 (18.8%) positive cases. A prognostic analysis of SLN detection based on 48 patients showed that the 5-year survival rate was 100%. CONCLUSION: MBD has acceptable SLN identification rate and a low FNR(false negative report) in frozen sections. Stained SLNs with no SLN metastasis are associated with disease-free survival (DFS). Hence, MBD-SLN biopsy has significantly reduced the need for extensive neck dissection in N0 neck with less morbidity.

This study aims to investigate the expression of SIX1, EYA2, and E-cadherin in ovarian cancer (OC). It was conducted on 97 cases of surface epithelial tumors (SEOTs). Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining for the three markers was applied to archival paraffin-embedded sections. Results of semi-quantitative scoring were statistically compared, correlated with clinic-pathologic parameters, response to therapy and with patient survival. RESULTS: There was a significant association of SIX1 expression in the intratumoral stroma (ITS) with malignant cases (P < 0.0001). There was a significant direct correlation between tumour cell expression of SIX1 and EYA2 (P = 0.03) and an inverse correlation between SIX1 and E-cadherin (P = 0.03). Additionally, there were direct correlations between SIX1 expression and larger tumour size (P = 0.05), high mitosis (P < 0.0001), and advanced FIGO stage (P = 0.06), and between EYA2 expression and LN metastasis (P = 0.02), and low apoptotic index (P = 0.007). Only SIX1 expression in ITS affected the patient survival by univariate analysis (P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: SIX1/EYA2 complex may have a poor prognostic role in OC. SIX1 expression in ITS may be used as a predictive marker of stromal invasion in ovarian borderline tumors and could affect patients' survival in OC. SIX1, EYA2, and E-cadherin may constitute a pathway that could be targeted to stop the progression of SEOTs.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the existence of ductal changes in diabetics using sialendoscopy. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty patients and 10 volunteers received bilateral parotid diagnostic sialendoscopy. Group I included 10 patients with uncontrolled diabetes (UCD); group II, 10 patients with controlled diabetes (CD); and group III, 10 nondiabetic controls (CG). Expected ductal changes were examined in 3 proposed distinct zones. A χ2 test was used to compare groups. RESULTS: Ductal pathologic conditions were significantly higher in diabetic patients in all zones. Abnormalities were classified as stenosis, hyperemia, or others. In UCD, stenosis percentage was 55%, 90%, and 100% in zones 1, 2, and 3, respectively, compared with 30%, 40%, and 55% in CD and 5%, 5%, and 0% in CG (P < .01). Hyperemic changes in UCD were 90%, 90%, and 40% compared with 50%, 50%, and 20% in CD (P < .01) and 0% in CG. Comparing zones in UCD and CD indicated that stenosis increased significantly toward the proximal end, whereas hyperemia prevailed toward the distal end. CONCLUSIONS: Significant ductal abnormalities were detected in the parotids of UCD and CD patients compared with CG. Ductal changes were higher in UCD compared with CD.

the present study the was done to evaluate chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic anti-tumor potential of some Egyptian plant extract (moringa, graviola, ginger garden cress and artemisinin) against 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA)-induced mammary carcinogenesis in Swiss albino mice. chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic evaluation was assessed by monitoring the tumor incidence and tumor volume as well as by analyzing the status of (a) biochemical markers (maspin, survivin, livin, caveolin-1, osteopontin and Fucosyltransferase 4 gene expressions), oxidative stress related profile including; total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione reductase (GR) activity, glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activity assay, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity and lipid peroxidation (MDA), renal and hepatic toxicity markers (urea, creatinine, alanine transaminase (alt) activity, aspartate aminotransferase (ast) activity, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) Activity and γ-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) activity also study of (b) biophysical markers (trace and heavy metals (lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn)), dielectric properties and body water distribution) finally (c) histopathological examination oral administration of increasing dose of moringa, graviola, ginger garden cress and artemisinin extracts, respectively significantly prevented the tumor incidence and tumor volume as well as brought back the status of the above mentioned biochemical and biophysical variables. Histopathological changes also confirmed the formation of tumor tubules and neovascularization after the treatment. Overall, these results suggest that treatment with moringa, graviola, ginger garden cress and artemisinin extracts provided antioxidant defense with strong chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity against DMBA-induced mammary tumors.

The underlying work was conducted aiming at cancer targeted therapy using the sono-photodynamic therapy (SPDT) in combination with sonnelux (SLux) as a sono-photosensitizer loaded on folic acid conjugated nanographene oxide nanoparticles (FA-NGO-SLux) as an up-to-date treating cancer modality. Study was conducted on A total of 130 male Swiss albino mice with age 60-65 day, weighing 20 ±â€¯25 g, inoculated with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) subdivided into 13 group. Two sources of energy were used; namely infrared laser and Ultrasound (pulsed and continuous wave mode). Results revealed that Nano-SLux is a potential photosensitizer and sonosensitizer for photodynamic or sonodynamic treatment of Ehrlich ascites tumor tissue. Nano-SLux can play important roles in inhibiting tumor growth and even inducing cell death, which might be attributed to Photo and/or sono-chemical activation mechanism. Infra-red laser in combination with ultrasound in the presence of Nano- SLux has a potential antitumor effect. Sonocation followed by light photon irradiation proves its excellent efficiency as an anticancer therapy. The results suggest that folic acid-conjugated nano-graphene oxide loaded with sono-photo-sensitizers (FA-NGO-SPSs) could be used as a novel nanomaterial with great potential as effective drug delivery system in targeting sono-photo-dynamic-therapy (SPDT).

BACKGROUND: HIV infection in India is unique as it occurs predominantly by CCR5-utilizing isolates that exhibit no co-receptor switch. OBJECTIVES: To study HIV-1 co-receptor dynamics on T cells and monocytes following viral infection. STUDY DESIGN: HIV co-receptor expression was evaluated by flow cytometry on various cell subsets in HIV-infected Indians and in vitro in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells infected with CCR5- or CXCR4-utilizing HIV-1. Transfection of the T cell line CEM-CCR5 (which expresses CD4, CCR5 and CXCR4) with HIV-1 Nef or Vpu expression vectors, or treatment with recombinant soluble gp120 from CCR5- and CXCR4-tropic HIV-1, was carried out to determine their effects on co-receptor expression. RESULTS: Indian HIV patients had fewer CD4+CCR5+ T cells and CCR5-expressing activated CD4+ T cells, but higher CXCR4-expressing activated CD4+ T cells compared with controls. Expression of CCR5 was not different on monocytes in HIV patients as compared to controls. The CCR5 downregulation on T cells was HIV infection specific and was governed by the co-receptor-utilization phenotype of the virus. The Nef and soluble gp120 proteins induced CCR5 downregulation, the latter in a co-receptor-utilization phenotype specific manner. CONCLUSIONS: The HIV-1 co-receptor dynamics in Indian patients is distinct from western patients and depends upon the virus surface protein. We propose this to be a viral survival strategy.
