Disinfection commonly follows conventional treatments in wastewater treatment and remediation plants aiming at reducing the presence of pathogens. However, the presence of the so called "micropollutants" has emerged as a serious concern, therefore developing tertiary treatments that are not only able to remove pathogens but also to degrade micropollutants is worth investigating. Nowadays, UV-C photo-degradation processes are widely used for disinfection due to their simplicity and easy operation; additionally, they have shown potential for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern. Conventional mercury lamps are being replaced by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that avoid the use of toxic mercury and can be switched on and off with no effect on the lamp lifetime. This work aims to comparatively evaluate the performance of several photo-degradation technologies for the removal of two targeted micropollutants, the pharmaceutical dexamethasone (DXMT) and the herbicide S-metolachlor (MTLC), using UV irradiation doses typical of disinfection processes. To this end, the technical performance of UV-A/UV-C photolysis, UV-A/UV-C photocatalysis, UV-C/H2O2 and UV-C/NaOCl has been compared. The influence of operating conditions such as the initial concentration of the pollutants (3 mg L-1 - 30 mg L-1, concentrations found in membrane or adsorption remediation steps), pH (3-10), and water matrix (WWTP secondary effluent, and ultrapure water) on the degradation efficiency has been studied. The economic evaluation in terms of electricity and chemicals consumption and the carbon footprint has been evaluated. UV-C photolysis and UV-C photocatalysis appear as the most suitable technologies for the degradation of DXMT and MTLC, respectively, in terms of kinetics (1.53·10-1 min-1 for DXMT and 1.96·10-2 min-1 for MTLC), economic evaluation (1 € m-3 for DXMT and 32 € m-3 for MTLC) and environmental indicators (0.5 g-CO2 for DXMT and 223.1 g-CO2 for MTLC).

RESUMEN

The increasing life expectancy has led to a higher incidence of age-related neurodegenerative conditions. Within this framework, neuroinflammation emerges as a significant contributing factor. It involves the activation of microglia and astrocytes, leading to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and the infiltration of peripheral leukocytes into the central nervous system (CNS). These instances result in neuronal damage and neurodegeneration through activated nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat containing (NLR) family pyrin domain containing protein 3 (NLRP3) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) pathways and decreased nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activity. Due to limited effectiveness regarding the inhibition of neuroinflammatory targets using conventional drugs, there is challenging growth in the search for innovative therapies for alleviating neuroinflammation in CNS diseases or even before their onset. Our results indicate that interventions focusing on Interleukin-Driven Immunomodulation, Chemokine (CXC) Receptor Signaling and Expression, Cold Exposure, and Fibrin-Targeted strategies significantly promise to mitigate neuroinflammatory processes. These approaches demonstrate potential anti-neuroinflammatory effects, addressing conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease. While the findings are promising, immunomodulatory therapies often face limitations due to Immune-Related Adverse Events. Therefore, the conduction of randomized clinical trials in this matter is mandatory, and will pave the way for a promising future in the development of new medicines with specific therapeutic targets.

RESUMEN

This research proposes a methodological approach to search floating bodies or floating body parts in rivers using hydroinformatic tools. These tools may allow possible search locations and potential release sites to be determined. The approach draws from hydrometric field information, two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic modeling, particle tracking (PT) models, and large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV). This methodology was applied to a case study of the La Miel river in Colombia, where existing reports of deceased persons are available. A series of hydraulic accidents have been defined to represent the hydrodynamic and transport processes that occur in such situations. The results indicate that potential search locations, namely places where human floating bodies or floating body parts may be found, are principally on the left and right shores of recirculation systems.

The Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disease caused by the pathogenic mutation of the folliculin gene, which is mainly expressed in three organs that include the lung, the skin and the kidney, and produces lung cysts, and renal and skin tumors. From the respiratory point of view, it doesn't have many symptoms, but cysts have high risk of pneumothorax, so it is indispensable to carry out the correct radiological semiology of the cysts for a timely diagnosis. The most important tumors are the renal, because they include several types of renal carcinomas; that is why they require strict follow-up and, in many cases, surgery. We present two cases of patients with this syndrome: one confirmed by the genetic mutation, and the other one by the histological confirmation of fibrofolliculoma, both major criteria for the diagnosis of this disease. The early diagnosis of this entity is of fundamental importance, according to what has been previously presented, so we conduct this review with a broad discus sion about lung involvement, the radiological semiology of the cysts, and diagnostic criteria.

RESUMEN

Aquaculture has been the fastest growing agricultural sector in the past few decades and currently supplies about half of the fish market. A range of environmental and management concerns including limited land and water availability have led to intensifying fish production by recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Fish's diet contains 30-60 % protein and about 4-10 % nitrogen (N). As fish assimilate only 20-30 % of the feed to produce body mass, the unassimilated N is released in the form of toxic ammonium that deteriorates water quality and compels its degradation. Widely extended biological nitrification is not efficient in the removal of nitrites nor other chemicals and pharmaceuticals used during fish culture. Electrochemical oxidation, a less developed alternative, reports several advantages such as, i) simultaneous degradation of ammonianitrogen (TAN) and water disinfection in the same step with considerable simplification of the whole process, ii) easy adaptability to different production scales and periods of fish growth, and iii) no generation of harmful by-products and no use of chemicals, among others. Besides, in the case of marine aquaculture, the technology benefits from the high conductivity of seawater; thus, electrochemical oxidation is positioned in a very good place to satisfy the water treatment needs of the increasing production rate of marine aquaculture fish. Here, we report the analysis of the performance of a RAS demonstration plant aimed at farming gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and provided with electrochemical remediation of culture water. The performance of the plant, with 20 m3 of seawater operating at a recirculation rate of 0.9-1.4 h-1, has been analysed in terms of TAN removal, water disinfection, make-up water intake and energy consumption and compared to data of conventional RAS provided with biofilters. The benefits and advantages of the innovative electrochemical remediation of RAS water are highlighted.

RESUMEN

In this experimental protocol, the objective was to evaluate the biological behavior of two xenogenic scaffolds in alcohol-induced rats through histomorphometric and Picrosirius Red staining analysis of non-critical defects in the tibia of rats submitted or not to alcohol ingestion at 25% v/v. Eighty male rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 20 each): CG/B (water diet + Bio-Oss® graft, Geistlich Pharma AG, Wolhusen, Switzerland), CG/O (water diet + OrthoGen® graft, Baumer, Mogi Mirim, Brazil), AG/B (25% v/v alcohol diet + Bio-Oss® graft), and AG/O (25% v/v alcohol diet + OrthoGen® graft). After 90 days of liquid diet, the rats were surgically obtained, with a defect in the tibia proximal epiphysis; filled in according to their respective groups; and euthanized at 10, 20, 40 and 60 days. In two initial periods (10 and 20 days), all groups presented biomaterial particles surrounded by disorganized collagen fibrils. Alcoholic animals (AG/B and AG/O) presented, in the cortical and medullary regions, a reactive tissue with inflammatory infiltrate. In 60 days, in the superficial area of the surgical cavities, particles of biomaterials were observed in all groups, with new compact bone tissue around them, without complete closure of the lesion, except in non-alcoholic animals treated with Bio-Oss® xenograft (CG/B), where the new cortical interconnected the edges of the defect. Birefringence transition was observed in the histochemical analysis of collagen fibers by Picrosirius Red, in which all groups in periods of 10 and 20 days showed red-orange birefringence, and from 40 days onwards greenish-yellow birefringence, which demonstrates the characteristic transition from the formation of thin and disorganized collagen fibers initially to more organized and thicker later. In histomorphometric analysis, at 60 days, CG/B had the highest volume density of new bone (32.9 ± 1.15) and AG/O the lowest volume density of new bone (15.32 ± 1.71). It can be concluded that the bone neoformation occurred in the defects that received the two biomaterials, in all periods, but the Bio-Oss® was superior in the results, with its groups CG/B and AG/B displaying greater bone formation (32.9 ± 1.15 and 22.74 ± 1.15, respectively) compared to the OrthoGen® CG/O and AG/O groups (20.66 ± 2.12 and 15.32 ± 1.71, respectively), and that the alcoholic diet interfered negatively in the repair process and in the percentage of new bone formed.

RESUMEN

Shipping is a very important source of pollution worldwide. In recent years, numerous actions and measures have been developed trying to reduce the levels of greenhouse gases (GHG) from the marine exhaust emissions in the fight against climate change, boosting the Sustainable Development Goal 13. Following this target, the action of hydrogen as energy vector makes it a suitable alternative to be used as fuel, constituting a very promising energy carrier for energy transition and decarbonization in maritime transport. The objective of this study is to develop an ex-ante environmental evaluation of two promising technologies for vessels propulsion, a H2 Polymeric Electrolytic Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC), and a H2 Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), in order to determine their viability and eligibility compared to the traditional one, a diesel ICE. The applied methodology follows the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) guidelines, considering a functional unit of 1 kWh of energy produced. LCA results reveal that both alternatives have great potential to promote the energy transition, particularly the H2 ICE. However, as technologies readiness level is quite low, it was concluded that the assessment has been conducted at a very early stage, so their sustainability and environmental performance may change as they become more widely developed and deployed, which can be only achieved with political and stakeholder's involvement and collaboration.

RESUMEN

To assess the effects of chronic alcoholism on the repair of bone defects associated with xenograft. Forty male rats were distributed in: control group (CG, n = 20) and experimental group (EG, n = 20), which received 25% ethanol ad libitum after a period of adaptation. After 90 days of liquid diet, the rats were submitted to 5.0-mm bilateral craniotomy on the parietal bones, subdividing into groups: CCG (control group that received only water with liquid diet and the defect was filled with blood clot), BCG (control group that received only water with liquid diet and the defect was filled with biomaterial), CEG (alcoholic group that received only ethanol solution 25% v/v with liquid diet and the defect was filled with blood clot), and BEG (alcoholic group that received only ethanol solution 25% v/v with liquid diet and the defect was filled with biomaterial). In the analysis of body mass, the drunk animals presented the lowest averages in relation to non-drunk animals during the experimental period. Histomorphologically all groups presented bone formation restricted to the defect margins at 60 days, with bone islets adjacent to the BCG biomaterial particles. CEG showed significant difference compared to BEG only at 40 days (17.42 ± 2.78 vs. 9.59 ± 4.59, respectively). In the birefringence analysis, in early periods all groups showed red-orange birefringence turning greenish-yellow at the end of the experiment. The results provided that, regardless of clinical condition, i.e., alcoholic or non-alcoholic, in the final period of the experiment, the process of bone defect recomposition was similar with the use of xenograft or only clot.

RESUMEN

This study evaluated the effect of ethanol on the repair in calvaria treated with beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP). Forty rats were distributed into 2 groups: Water group (CG, n = 20) and Alcohol Group (AG, n = 20), which received 25% ethanol ad libitum after an adaptation period of 3 weeks. After 90 days of liquid diet, the rats were submitted to a 5.0 mm bilateral craniotomy in the parietal bones; the left parietal was filled with ß-TCP (CG-TCP and AG-TCP) and the contralateral only with blood clot (CG-Clot and AG-Clot). The animals were killed after 10, 20, 40 and 60 days. The groups CG-Clot and AG-Clot showed similar pattern of bone formation with a gradual and significant increase in the amount of bone in CG-Clot (22.17 ± 3.18 and 34.81 ± 5.49) in relation to AG-Clot (9.35 ± 5.98 and 21.65 ± 6.70) in periods of 20-40 days, respectively. However, in the other periods there was no statistically significant difference. Alcohol ingestion had a negative influence on bone formation, even with the use of ß-TCP, exhibiting slow resorption and replacement by fibrous tissue, with 16% of bone formation within 60 days in AG-TCP, exhibiting immature bone tissue with predominance of disorganized collagen fibers. Defects in CG-TCP showed bone tissue with predominance of lamellar arrangement filling 39% of the original defect. It can be concluded that chronic ethanol consumption impairs the ability to repair bone defects, even with the use of a ß-TCP biomaterial.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on qualitative, quantitative, and functional aspects in the facial nerve regeneration process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two male Wistar rats were used, randomly divided into a control group (CG; n = 10), in which the facial nerve without lesion was collected, and four experimental groups: (1) suture experimental group (SEG) and (2) fibrin experimental group (FEG), consisting of 16 animals in which the buccal branch of the facial nerve was sectioned on both sides of the face; an end-to-end epineural suture was performed on the right side, and a fibrin sealant was used on the left side for coaptation of the stumps; and (3) laser suture experimental group (LSEG) and (4) laser fibrin experimental group (LFEG), consisting of 16 animals that underwent the same surgical procedures as SEG and FEG with the addition of laser application at three different points along the surgical site (pulsed laser of 830 nm wavelength, optical output power of 30 mW, power density of 0.2586 W/cm2, energy density of 6.2 J/cm2, beam area of 0.116 cm2, exposure time of 24 sec per point, total energy per session of 2.16 J, and cumulative dose of 34.56 J). The animals were submitted to functional analysis (subjective observation of whisker movement) and the data obtained were compared using Fisher's exact test. Euthanasia was performed at 5 and 10 weeks postoperative. The total number and density of regenerated axons were analyzed using the unpaired t-test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Laser therapy resulted in a significant increase in the number and density of regenerated axons. The LSEG and LFEG presented better scores in functional analysis in comparison with the SEG and FEG. CONCLUSIONS: LLLT enhanced axonal regeneration and accelerated functional recovery of the whiskers, and both repair techniques allowed the growth of axons.

RESUMEN

Air quality assessment, required by the European Union (EU) Air Quality Directive, Directive 2008/50/EC, is part of the functions attributed to Environmental Management authorities. Based on the cost and time consumption associated with the experimental works required for the air quality assessment in relation to the EU-regulated metal and metalloids, other methods such as modelling or objective estimation arise as competitive alternatives when, in accordance with the Air Quality Directive, the levels of pollutants permit their use at a specific location. This work investigates the possibility of using statistical models based on Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to estimate the levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) in ambient air and their application for policy purposes. A methodology comprising the main steps that should be taken into consideration to prepare the input database, develop the model and evaluate their performance is proposed and applied to a case of study in Santander (Spain). It was observed that even though these approaches present some difficulties in estimating the individual sample concentrations, having an equivalent performance they can be considered valid for the estimation of the mean values - those to be compared with the limit/target values - fulfilling the uncertainty requirements in the context of the Air Quality Directive. Additionally, the influence of the consideration of input variables related to atmospheric stability on the performance of the studied statistical models has been determined. Although the consideration of these variables as additional inputs had no effect on As and Cd models, they did yield an improvement for Pb and Ni, especially with regard to ANN models.

The imbalance in bone turnover resulting from the effects of chronic alcoholism is related to apoptosis of osteocytes, decrease of trabecular and cortical bone thickness and changes in activity and differentiation of osteoblasts. Due to the need for regenerative and reconstructive treatments associated with alcoholism, xenografts has provided a therapeutic possibility as a filling material of bone defects. Therefore, the aims of this study were to analyze the Bonefill® biomaterial behavior in critical defects created on the calvaria of rats; to compare the interference of experimental alcoholism in bone formation, as well as to evaluate the influence of 2 type of liquid diet on animal body weight. 40 male Wistar rats were used (Rattus norvegicus), with 60 days of age. The rats were randomly separated into Control Group (CG, nº = 20), which received water as liquid diet and Experimental Group (EG, nº = 20), these rats consumed ethanol 25%. CG was subdivided into WCG (Water Clot Group), corresponding to the right calvaria defect and WBG (Water Biomaterial Group), left side defect of the calvaria. EG was subdivided into ECG (Ethanol Clot Group), corresponding to the right calvaria defect and EBG (Ethanol Biomaterial Group), left side defect of the calvaria. A circle osteotomy of 5 mm in diameter was performed in the right and left parietal bone. The bone defects in WCG and ECG were filled with blood clot and the defects in WBG and EBG were filled with inorganic bovine bone. 5 animals from each group were euthanized at periods of 10, 20, 40 and 60 days after surgery. The histological analysis showed that at 10 days, WBG and EBG, the particles of bone graft were surrounded by granulation tissue and inflammatory cells, it also showed a small immature bone formation mainly at the margins of the defects. At 20 days it was observed blood vessels in WBG and EBG and some graft particles partially surrounded by new bone...

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to identify the shape and route of the bony canal of the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) and posterior superior alveolar nerve (PSAN) using different identification methods, including computed tomography (CT), panoramic radiograph, and macroscopic evaluation (corpse and dry skull). Twenty-four patients were analyzed by CT and panoramic and posterior anterior (PA) radiographs; additionally, 90 dry skulls and 21 dissected anatomical specimens were examined. Three-dimensional-CT revealed that the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus resembled a tunnel format in 60% of the treated patients. Out of all 24 patients, the panoramic radiograph identified the bony canal in only one patient; whereas the PA radiograph identified it in 80% of the patients. The dry skulls showed tunnellike routes of the PSAA and PSAN in 65% of the cases. Moreover, the pathway was also visibly observed in the dissected anatomical specimens as a straight shape in 85% of the cases. Thus, our results demonstrated that the most common shape of the bony canal of the PSAA and PSAN is the tunnel format with a straight route by 3D-CT, posterior anterior radiography, and macroscopic evaluation. However, in the panoramic radiographs, it was difficult to identify this canal.

Ileoscopy is endoscopic exploration of the ileum. It can be performed using two procedures: single or double balloon endoscopy or capsule endoscopy. We have little information about ileum pathologies in our environment.

Objective: Describe findings from ileoscopies performed through colonoscopies without prior indications. Calculate the frequency of these findings. Materials and methods: 3701 reported colonoscopies performed in the Neiva University Hospital were examined between 1996 and 2009. 417 colonoscopies were selected for ileoscopies, which were performed from 29 biopsies. Results: 417 reports were included for analysis. 92.9% were normal. 7.1% (34 patients) presented pathologic characteristics. Of those 34 patients, 28 were chosen for biopsies. Tithe most frequent diagnoses were chronic inflammation (56%) and lymphoid hyperplasia (28%). No complications were reported from the use of endoscopic procedures. Conclusions: Ileoscopy is a procedure with low productivity regarding distal ileum pathologies. We cannot recommend this procedure for routine examinations. It must be practiced with discretion by specialists depending upon the availability of other methods, experience and costs.
