RESUMEN

Two experiments evaluated the effects of injectable trace minerals (ITM) administered 11 d before artificial insemination (AI) on body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), ovarian structures, pregnancy rate, and antioxidant response of Nellore cows. In Experiment 1, 20 multiparous cows were assigned to one of two treatments: subcutaneous injection (6 mL/cow; 11 d before AI) of saline solution or ITM (60, 10, 5, and 15 mg/mL of Zn, Mn, Se and Cu, respectively) and BW, BCS, ovarian structures and blood were evaluated. In Experiment 2, 1,144 multiparous cows were assigned to same treatments described in Experiment 1 and pregnancy rate on d 30 was evaluated. In Experiment 1, ITM did not affect (P ≥  0.23) BW, dominant follicle size, ovulation rate, and plasma concentrations of haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin and progesterone (P4). The ITM treatment tended to increase (P =  0.06) cow BCS and reduce (P ≤  0.06) corpus luteum (CL) diameter and volume. Furthermore, ITM treatment tended to increase (P =  0.06) plasma concentrations of SOD and increased (P =  0.007) GSH-Px compared with saline injection. In Experiment 2, ITM treatment tended (P =  0.06) to increase pregnancy rate of cows with BCS ≤ 5.0 but not cows with BCS > 5.0 (P =  0.99). The ITM treatment did not alter BW, plasma P4, and acute phase response, but enhanced plasma concentrations of antioxidant enzymes, and tended to enhance BCS and pregnancy rates to AI of cows with BCS ≤ 5.0, even though there was a smaller corpus luteum size.

One of the most relevant issues in discussion worldwide nowadays is the concept of sustainability. However, sustainability assessment is a difficult task due to the complexity of factors involved in the natural world added to the human interference. In order to assess the sustainability of beef ranching in complex and uncertain tropical environment systems this paper describes a decision support system based on fuzzy rule-approach, the Sustainable Pantanal Ranch (SPR). This tool was built by a set of measurements and indicators integrated by fuzzy logic to evaluate the attributes of the three dimensions of sustainability. Indicators and decision rules, as well as scenario evaluations, were obtained from workshops involving multi-disciplinary team of experts. A Fuzzy Rule-Based System (FRBS) was developed to each attribute, dimension and general index. The essential parts of the FRBS are the knowledge database, rules and the inference engine. The FuzzyGen and WebFuzzy tools were developed to support the FRBS and both showed efficiency and low cost for digital applications. The results of each attribute, dimension and index were presented as radar graphs, showing the individual value (0-10) of each indicator. In the validation process using the WebFuzzy, different combinations of indicators were made for each attribute index to show the corresponding output, and which confirm the feasibility and usability of the tool.

A sustainable alternative to improve yield and the nutritive value of forage is the use of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) that release nutrients, synthesize plant hormones and protect against phytopathogens (among other mechanisms). Azospirillum genus is considered an important PGPB, due to the beneficial effects observed when inoculated in several plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diversity of new Azospirillum isolates and select bacteria according to the plant growth promotion ability in three forage species from the Brazilian Pantanal floodplain: Axonopus purpusii, Hymenachne amplexicaulis and Mesosetum chaseae. The identification of bacterial isolates was performed using specific primers for Azospirillum in PCR reactions and partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA and nifH genes. The isolates were evaluated in vitro considering biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production. Based on the results of BNF and IAA, selected isolates and two reference strains were tested by inoculation. At 31 days after planting the plant height, shoot dry matter, shoot protein content and root volume were evaluated. All isolates were able to fix nitrogen and produce IAA, with values ranging from 25.86 to 51.26 mg N mL-1 and 107-1038 µmol L-1, respectively. The inoculation of H. amplexicaulis and A. purpusii increased root volume and shoot dry matter. There were positive effects of Azospirillum inoculation on Mesosetum chaseae regarding plant height, shoot dry matter and root volume. Isolates MAY1, MAY3 and MAY12 were considered promising for subsequent inoculation studies in field conditions.
