Enactment: Listening to psychic gestures.

The growing acceptance since the turn of the millennium of a psyche open to exchanges with others from the earliest stages of life has prompted the conception of clinical approaches for listening psychoanalytically to the effects of this archaic link on the mind. On the basis of clinical material, the author advocates analytic listening through the medium of enactment, which he sees as a conceptual tool to facilitate psychoanalytic understanding of what is dramatized by the analytic couple, over and above the semantic content of the patient's words. In addition to the dyad of free association and evenly suspended attention for gaining access to the dynamically repressed, the author contends that listening through the medium of enactment is the royal road to what he calls the psychic gesture. This is a form of image-based psychic registration of the early interaction with objects that preserved the infantile subject from primal representational helplessness. The author argues that what is enacted by the analytic couple is an irreducible intermediate stage in any analytic process, since it enables the patient to gain insight into the intersubjective genesis of his psyche and to take ownership of his destiny.

A partir de um material clínico, é descrito um processo identificatório encontrado na escuta analítica que articula o pulsional intrapsíquico com o histórico intersubjetivo. Postula-se que dito processo ataca a capacidade de pensar do sujeito, condenando-o a repetir compulsivamente um passado que jamais pôde ser. O autor considera que, embora a identificação seja inevitável do ponto de vista diacrônico evolutivo, porque estruturada subjetivamente, será somente uma estação de trânsito e não de chegada, pois contém a potencialidade da heteronomia

Metapsychology or metapsychologies? Some comments on Paul Denis's paper 'The drive revisited: mastery and satisfaction'.

In this commentary on Paul Denis's paper 'The drive revisited: mastery and satisfaction', the author defends the idea of a plurality of metapsychologies that must be contrasted with and distinguished from each other while avoiding incompatible translations between models. In this connection he presents various theoretical approaches to aggression and the death drive, and demonstrates the differences between the drive model and the model underlying the theory of internalized object relations. The author holds that the concept of the internal object differs from Freud's notion of the representation (Vorstellung). He also considers that the imago as defined by Paul Denis in fact corresponds to the concept of the internal object. Lastly, he addresses the complex issue of listening to archaic forms of psychic functioning and their non-discursive presentation within the analytic process, which affects the transference-countertransference link.

Second thoughts on Agieren: listening to the enacted.

The author proposes an expanded notion of the concept of Agieren, introduced by Freud in his theory of transference, and to this effect discusses three metapsychological articulations. Firstly, the idea of the psyche is proposed containing different co-existing modalities of representing emotional experience. One is a verbal inscription governed by the logic of the dynamically repressed, and another is the registration of a mode of being, in the form of sequences of psychic gestures that the subject exchanges with his objects. The author proposes that the psychic gesture is the ideopictographic representation for certain emotional states never verbally thought and, consequently, its metapsychological status is unconscious but not repressed. Secondly, these unconscious registers contain specific modalities of processing reality, created by the projective attribution of the parental unconscious. Finally, by conceiving this model of unconscious, ideopictographically represented as psychic gestures, the author proposes that a patient's emotional state, becoming a psychic gesture of the analytic pair, is enacted within the analytic stage. His proposal departs from the frequent view of enactment as a result of the non-represented aspects of the psyche. It is assumed that what is played out by the analytic pair pertains to the unconscious imaginary represented.

Partindo da suposição de que a noção de regressão libidinal pertence a um modelo de psiquismo estático, encerrado no vínculo com o outro e organizado de forma invariante, o autor considera que a apresentação do arcaico na sessão analítica pressupõe um modelo de psiquismo como uma Organização Funcional, com diferentes níveis de funcionamento e de representação simbólica. Propõe-se a ideia de um psiquismo arcaico, conceitualizado como inconsciente não reprimido e resultante das atribuições projetivo-traumáticas do inconsciente parental, que busca expressão e representação através da colocação em ato nos diferentes contextos em que se processa a realidade psíquica. O autor considera que a ideia de um psiquismo, que se manifesta por meio do que é repetido a partir da colocação em ato dramático, é a consequência de um psiquismo aberto à geração de significado emocional no encontro com o outro do espaço intersubjetivo, o qual deixou de ser um objeto contingente. Considera-se que a noção freudiana de Agieren pressupõe uma mudança implícita na teoria da escuta psicanalítica, dado que a transferência deixa de ser apenas o deslocamento da representação intrapsí-quica para constituir-se em fenômeno intersubjetivo indissoluvelmente ligado à contratransferência. Postula-se finalmente que a utilização instrumental da apresentação do arcaico no processo analítico implica que o enquadre, ao conter a representação cênica de certa configuração intrapsíquica arcaica do analisando registrada como gestos-psíquicos-não-pensados-verbalmente, cria as condições para uma nova forma de representação compatível com a lógica verbal do Eu, distanciada da repetição em ato e suscetível de ser ressignificada infinitamente.

Supposing that the notion of libidinal regression belongs to a model of static psychism, ending at the link with the other and organized in an invariable way, the author considers that the presentation of the archaic in the analytic session implies a model of psychism as a Functional Organization with different levels of functioning and of symbolic representation. The idea of an archaic psychism is suggested, conceptualized as a non-repressed unconscious which results from the projective-traumatic characteristics of the parental unconscious, and which seeks to represent and express itself through the placing in action in the different contexts in which psychic reality is processed. The author considers that the idea of a psychism, which manifests itself through what is repeated from the placing in dramatic action, is the consequence of a psychism open to the generation of emotional meaning in the encounter with the other of the intersubjective space, whom is no longer a contingent object. It is observed that the Freudian notion of Agieren assumes an implicit change in the theory of psychoanalytic listening, given that transference no longer is merely the dislocation of the intrapsychic representation and becomes an intersubjective phenomenon inextricably linked to countertransference. Finally, it is claimed that the instrumental use of the introduction of the archaic in the analytic process implies that the frame, by containing the scenic representation of a certain archaic intrapsychic configuration of the analysand registered as psychic-gestures-not-verbally-thought, creates the conditions for a new form of representation which is compatible with the verbal logic of the ego, far from action repetition and susceptible to being infinitely resignified.

Se propone la idea de un psiquismo arcaico, conceptualizado como inconsciente no reprimido, efecto de las atribuciones proyectivo-traumáticas del inconsciente parental, que busca expresión y representación a través de la puesta en acto en los diferentes contextos donde se procesa la realidad psíquica. With the assumption that the notion of libidinal regression pertains to a model of static psyche, closed to the relationship with the other and organized in an invariant form, the author considers that the presentation of the archaic in the analytic session implies a model of psyche as a Functional Organization with different levels of functioning and symbolic representation. It is proposed the idea of an archaid psyche, conceptualized as non-repressed unconscious, originated by the projective traumatic attributions of the parental unconscious and looking for expression and representation through enactment within the different contexts where psychic reality is worked through. It is considered that this idea of a psyche, expressing and representing through repetition in dramatic act, is the logical consequence of a model of an open psychic subject generating psychological meaning in the encounter with the inter-subjective other, no more view as a contingent object. The author argues that the Freudian notion of agieren supposes an implicit change in the theory of psychoanalytic listening as transference is no longer considered the displacement between intra-psychic representations but an inter-subjective phenomenon linked to counter-transference. Thus transference is considered exceeding both the model of the first drive theory as well the first Freudian topography. It is postulated that the instrumental use of regression in the analytic process implies that the setting, containing the scenic representation of certain archaic intra-psychic configuration of the patient registered as not-verbally-thought-psychic-gestures, creates the conditions for a new form of representation compatible with Ego´s verbal thinking, apart from repetition n act and liable to be resignified infinitely (AU)

Se realiza una revisión del concepto de Agieren diferenciándolo de la noción de acting out, sea del paciente o del analista y se propone traducirlo como puesta en acto o escenificación. Se postula que esta noción de puesta en acto, introducida por Freud en 1914, ha adquirido un sentido patologizante en la literatura psicoanalítica de mediados del siglo pasado debido a conceptualizarlo según la primera tópica freudiana en la que lo actual no simbolizado verbalmente queda, por definición, por fuera del aparato psíquico descargándose como actos que no conducen a la elaboración. Se postula que una consecuencia lógica de la introducción de la segunda tópica freudiana, con un Ello concebido como un continente de mociones pulsionales no pensadas verbalmente, que tienden a la representación mediante el acto psíquico, supone un cambio en la escucha analítica. El autor propone que la presencia imaginaria del enigmático objeto transferencial, con el cual el analista es identificado en el encuentro, deviene pensable a posteriori de una puesta en acto que le proporcione figuración escénica. Se postula que, aunque una mirada superficial del fenómeno de la puesta en acto pudiera llevar a considerar que lo que estaría en juego sería sólo la percepción sensorial de una conducta del analista, de lo que verdaderamente se trata es de la representación escénica de cierta configuración transfero-contratransferencial, inconsciente para ambos miembros de la pareja analítica, que requiere de un trabajo de significación a posteriori (Nachtrdglich) (AU)

The concept of Agieren is revised, differentiating it from the notion of acting-out, either by the patient or by te analyst; its translation as enactment or dramatization, is suggested. The author proposes tat the notion on enactment, introduced by Freud in 1914, acquired a pathological meaning in the mind-twentieth century psycho-analytic literature due to it having been developed according ti the first structural theory, in which what is actual, not verbally symbolized, remains outside of the psychic apparatus, being discharged as acts not conducive to working throug. A logical consequence of the introduction of the second structural theory, with an Id conceptualized as a container of drive motions which have not been thought verbally, tending towards representation by means of a psychic act, implies a change in analytic listening. The author suggests that the imaginary presence of the enigmatic transferencial object, with which the analyst is identified in the encounter, becpmes thinkable a posteriori of having been eacted, which may provide dramatic figuration. Even though a superficial view of the phenomenon of enactmen may suggest that what is at stake is just the perception of the analyst´s behaviour, the larger issue has to do with the dramatic representation of a certain transferencial and countertransferential configuration, which is unconscious for both members of the analytic couple, and which requires a work of signification a posteriori (Nachträglickeit) (AU)

A partir de un material clínico se describe un proceso identificatorio hallado en la escucha analítica que articula lo pulsional intrapsíquico con lo histórico intersubjetivo. Se postula que dicho proceso ataca la capacidad de pensar del sujeto condenándolo a repetir compulsivamente un pasado que jamás pudo ser. El autor considera que, aunque la identificación sea inevitable desde el punto de vista diacrónico evolutivo porque estructura subjetivamente, será sólo una estación de tránsito y no de llegada, debido a que contiene la potencialidad de la heteronomía (AU)

Using clinical material, an identificatory process is described, in which historical ad intersubjective.
