RESUMEN

Warmer temperatures and higher sea level than today characterized the Last Interglacial interval [Pleistocene, 128 to 116 thousand years ago (ka)]. This period is a remarkable deep-time analog for temperature and sea-level conditions as projected for 2100 AD, yet there has been no evidence of fossil assemblages in the equatorial Atlantic. Here, we report foraminifer, metazoan (mollusks, bony fish, bryozoans, decapods, and sharks among others), and plant communities of coastal tropical marine and mangrove affinities, dating precisely from a ca. 130 to 115 ka time interval near the Equator, at Kourou, in French Guiana. These communities include ca. 230 recent species, some being endangered today and/or first recorded as fossils. The hyperdiverse Kourou mollusk assemblage suggests stronger affinities between Guianese and Caribbean coastal waters by the Last Interglacial than today, questioning the structuring role of the Amazon Plume on tropical Western Atlantic communities at the time. Grassland-dominated pollen, phytoliths, and charcoals from younger deposits in the same sections attest to a marine retreat and dryer conditions during the onset of the last glacial (ca. 110 to 50 ka), with a savanna-dominated landscape and episodes of fire. Charcoals from the last millennia suggest human presence in a mosaic of modern-like continental habitats. Our results provide key information about the ecology and biogeography of pristine Pleistocene tropical coastal ecosystems, especially relevant regarding the-widely anthropogenic-ongoing global warming.

The vertical distribution of radiocarbon (14C) was examined in two bottom sediment cores, taken from Lake Druksiai which had been used as a cooling pond for the Ignalina nuclear power plant (INPP) with two RBMK type reactors. The aim of this work was to reconstruct 14C amounts in the lake ecosystem during an 8-year period after the INPP was closed, as any official monitoring of 14C in liquid releases from the INPP was not performed. The possibility of comparing the variation of the 14C specific activity in the corresponding layers of the same period of 3 different cores (one taken in 2013 and two in 2019) revealed the variability of the determined values of liquid radiocarbon discharges from the INPP into the lake. Cores taken in 2019 showed a permament14C release rate of 0.76±0.06 GBq/y all eight years after the closure of the INPP. The 14C release rate established from radiocarbon measurements in both cores did not differ by more than 0.8 GBq/y. However, including data from the core taken several years ago, the estimated radiocarbon release rate values varied within 1.3 GBq/y.

The primary environmental concern related to nuclear power is the production of radioactive waste hazardous to humans and the environment. The main scientific and technological problems to address this are related to the storage and disposal of the nuclear waste and monitoring the dispersion of radioactive species into the environment. In this work, we determined an anomalously high 14C activity, well above the modern natural background, on surface and seasonal snow sampled in early May 2019 on glaciers in the Hornsund fjord area (Svalbard). Due to the lack of local sources, the high snow concentrations of 14C suggest long-range atmospheric transport of nuclear waste particles from lower latitudes, where nuclear power plants and treatment stations are located. The analysis of the synoptic and local meteorological data allowed us to associate the long-range transport of this anomalous 14C concentration to an intrusion event of a warm and humid air mass that likely brought pollutants from Central Europe to the Arctic in late April 2019. Elemental and organic carbon, trace element concentration data, and scanning electron microscopy morphological analysis were performed on the same snow samples to better constrain the transport process that might have led to the high 14C radionuclide concentrations in Svalbard. In particular, the highest 14C values found in the snowpack (> 200 percent of Modern Carbon, pMC) were associated with the lowest OC/EC ratios (< 4), an indication of an anthropogenic industrial source, and with the presence of spherical particles rich in iron, zirconium, and titanium which, altogether, suggest an origin related to nuclear waste reprocessing plants. This study highlights the role of long-range transport in exposing Arctic environments to human pollution. Given that the frequency and intensity of these atmospheric warming events are predicted to increase due to ongoing climate change, improving our knowledge of their possible impact to Arctic pollution is becoming urgent.

Mobile capabilities of 137Cs, 239,240Pu and some stable element physicochemical forms were studied in soil layers at a depth of 6-8 cm (maximum concentrations of radionuclides) of non-boggy and waterlogged soil cores sampled on the shores of Lake Bedugnis (Lithuania). Soil samples were acidic with small amount of clay (muscovite). The radionuclide activity concentrations were about 2.5 times higher in non-boggy soil. It was explained by different conditions of deposition of radioactive fallout at these sampling sites and density of the soil samples. The value of the exchangeable fraction of radionuclides is shown to be an indicator of their migration capabilities in the soil. Under anaerobic conditions in waterlogged soil (stagnant pore water conditions) and due to the presence of clay admixture, ∼90% of 137Cs was concentrated in the residual fraction and its mobility was low. 239,240Pu was concentrated mainly in organic matter with rather large exchangeable fractions (∼9.6-∼13.9%). Under oxidizing conditions in non-boggy soil (dynamic pore water conditions in the case of rain), 239,240Pu was mostly concentrated in the oxide fraction. Its exchangeable fractions were less than those in waterlogged soil and, respectively, its mobility was lower. In non-boggy soils, exchangeable fractions of 137Cs were large and varied in the range of 10.1-12.2%, which indicated its high mobility. In the case, 137Cs adsorption by clay materials was reduced and its residual fraction did not exceed 71.3%. The obtained data show that in the area of Lake Bedugnis, the migration capabilities of 137Cs and 239,240Pu change in antiphase.

BACKGROUND: Chromium (Cr) contact allergy is frequent in many industrialized countries. The knowledge of the factors that can influence percutaneous penetration is very important assessing the risk of human exposure. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the concentration of Cr in various skin layers using 2 different vehicles. METHODS: Full-thickness (approximately 1 mm) porcine ear skin was mounted in Franz-type diffusion cells. Duplicate potassium dichromate preparations in 0.5% petrolatum (pet) and 0.5% in aqua (aq) were applied to the donor compartment facing the epidermis for 24 hours. After the experiment, the porcine skin samples were cut with a microtome. All samples were analyzed for total Cr concentration by inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry. The limit of detection was 0.001 µg/cm3. RESULTS: Chromium was detected in both recipient phases. The distribution of Cr in the skin is similar for pet and aq preparations, but the concentration of Cr detected in the skin was almost 2 times lower for pet comparing aq preparations. CONCLUSIONS: Both vehicles were suitable for penetrating the skin. Less Cr is found in the skin when pet is used as a vehicle. Acid wipe sampling and finger immersion test results might be false-negative for Cr in occupations involving contact with Cr salts in aq solutions.

The wide applications of the radiocarbon (14C) approach in environmental, archeological, and geological research often necessitates the analysis of microgram-sized samples. The ability to measure low carbon samples is particularly relevant for aerosol particle filters, especially for samples from pristine environments. For this purpose, we investigated the sample dilution method for graphitization of low-carbon samples (20-200 µg C) with an Automated Graphitization System (AGE-3), and applied a mass balance equation for the calculation of 14C values. Materials with known 14C values (standards NIST-OXII and IAEA-C7) were diluted with 14C-free phthalic anhydride (PhA) until sufficient mass (500 µg C) for graphitization with the AGE-3 system was acquired. Reliable 14C values were obtained for samples with carbon amount in the range of 40-200 µg. Next, we adapted the dilution method for estimation of aerosol sample 14C values. Using it, we attained a precision of 0.71 ± 0.83 pMC for 14C measurements of aerosol samples containing 40-200 µg C. A shift of radiocarbon values to 5.07 pMC (average 3.08 ± 1.7 pMC) was observed for samples with low carbon content (<20 µg C). We determined that a precision of 2-3 pMC is acceptable for aerosol particle source apportionment studies. Using the sample dilution method, graphitization with AGE-3 of aerosol samples with carbon content >40 µg becomes a viable and efficient way of sample preparation for 14C analysis.

The tradition of burying horses in Lithuania lasted from the Early Roman period until the late 14th C AD. It was the longest-lasting custom in Europe, which has left about 2000 known horse burials. This paper publishes the osteometric data and age of horses found in Lithuanian cemeteries and castles of the 3rd-14th C AD, over 200 individuals in total. These are the remains of all the horses still stored in Lithuanian institutions. The paper discusses the dynamics of horse body size in order to test previously suggested hypotheses regarding the relationship between large horse body size and its military use, possibly non-local breed, and high social status of the owner. Moreover, we are publishing the AMS 14C dates of 13 horses previously assigned to the Migration period. The research results corrected the existing chronology. The abundant data also allowed an assessment of the development of the size and age of the horses in Lithuania between the 3rd and 14th C AD. Osteometric analyses have shown that Late Roman-post-Migration-period horses were unusually large compared to the Viking and medieval horses in Lithuania. Meanwhile, we suggest that the semi-slender-legged 118-125-cm-tall horse, which predominated in the Viking period, is the most consistent with the local horse type. In general, the horses in Lithuania in the 3rd-11th C AD were small compared to those in Central and Western Europe or Scandinavia. More significant changes can be observed in the Middle Ages. In the 12-14th C AD, there was a much greater variety of horses and the expansion of taller (140-150 cm) individuals. However, the continued abundance of small horses in the medieval times, found buried with saddles and other equipment, allows one to renew the debate on the formation of the cavalry, the tactics of combat, and the social composition of horsemen in Lithuania.

BACKGROUND: Metalworkers are said to have heavy exposure to metals, but the amount of released metal ions from alloys and deposition on the hands is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To analyze nickel, cobalt, and chromium in vitro release to the artificial sweat from nails and wire made of different alloys, and to test metal deposition on the fingers of metalworkers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six different samples of nails and wire were kept in artificial sweat for 24 hours and one week, respectively. The metal release was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Eighty-eight consecutive metal plant workers immersed their index fingers and thumbs in separate laboratory tubes filled with deionized water for 2 minutes. The sample analysis for metals was carried out with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). RESULTS: The average released concentration of Ni was 0.0012 µg/cm2 , for Co it was 0.0007 µg/cm2 , and for Cr 0.0037 µg/cm2 after 24 hours and 0.0135, 0.0029, and 0.0042 µg/cm2 , respectively, after 1 week. There was a statistically significant increase in released concentration of Ni during one week: 0.0012 µg/cm2 vs 0.0135 µg/cm2 (P = .04). Medians of the detected Co amount on fingers reflected a statistically significant difference between workplaces: 0.004 µg/cm2 for metalworkers vs 0.001 µg/cm2 for office staff (P = .04). CONCLUSION: Nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and chromium (Cr) can be released in different concentrations from nails and wire. Detected Ni and Cr levels can elicit dermatitis in already sensitized patients. Co can be extracted from alloys even if not mentioned on material safety data sheets. The finger immersion technique was used for cobalt and chromium detection on fingers for the first time.

The vertical distribution of radiocarbon (14C) was examined in the bottom sediment core, taken from Lake Druksiai, which has served as a cooling pond since 1983 for the 26 years of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) operation using two RBMK-1500 reactors (Russian acronym for"Channelized Large Power Reactor"). 14C specific activity was measured in alkali-soluble and -insoluble fractions of the sediment layers. Complementary measurements of the 210Pb and 137Cs activity of the samples provided the possibility to evaluate the date of every layer formation, covering the 1947-2013 period. In addition, 14C distribution was examined in the scales of pelagic fish caught between 1980 and 2012. Our measurements reveal that, during the period 1947-1999, the radiocarbon specific activity in both fractions exhibits a parallel course with a difference of 5 ± 1 pMC (percent of modern carbon) being higher in alkali-soluble fraction, although 14C specific activity in both fractions increased by 11.4-13.6 pMC during the first 15 years of plant operation. However, during the 2000-2009 period, other than previously seen, a dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) → aquatic primary producers → sediments 14C incorporation pattern occurred, as the radiocarbon specific activity difference between alkali-soluble and -insoluble fractions reached 94, 25, and 20 pMC in 2000, 2006, and 2008, respectively. Measurements in different sediment fractions allowed us to identify the unexpected organic nature of 14C contained in liquid effluences from the INPP in 2000-2009. The discrepancy between 14C specific activity in fish scales samples and DIC after 2000 also confirmed the possibility of organic 14C contamination. Possible reasons for this phenomenon might be industrial processes introduced at the INPP, such as the start of operation of the cementation facility for spent ion exchange resins, decontamination procedures, and various maintenance activities of reactor aging systems and equipment.

In paleoecological studies, molecular markers are being used increasingly often to reconstruct community structures, environmental conditions and ecosystem changes. In this work, nodularin, anabaenopeptins and selected DNA sequences were applied as Nodularia spumigena markers to reconstruct the history of the cyanobacterium in the Norwegian fjords. For the purpose of this study, three sediment cores collected in Oslofjorden, Trondheimsfjorden and Balsfjorden were analyzed. The lack of nodularin in most recent sediments is consistent with the fact that only one report on the sporadic occurrence and low amounts of the cyanobacterium in Norwegian Fjords in 1976 has been published. However, analyses of species-specific chemical markers in deep sediments showed that thousands of years ago, N. spumigena constituted an important component of the phytoplankton community. The content of the markers in the cores indicated that the biomass of the cyanobacterium increased during the warmer Holocene periods. The analyses of genetic markers were less conclusive; they showed the occurrence of microcystin/nodularin producing cyanobacteria of Nostocales order, but they did not allow for the identification of the organisms at a species level.

Various studies have shown that stable isotope analysis has the potential to verify the geographic origin of foods and drinks. However, stable isotope composition is not always constant in the environment and can even change in the same area. Dairy products are of particular interest as a group of foods that play an important role in feeding the population. The composition of milk is fundamentally dependent on the feeding of the cows, and thereby on a particular environment. To better understand the amount of variation in δ18O, δ13C, and δ15N values in the milk from the same area, we measured stable isotope ratios in cow milk water, artesian water, and precipitation (δ18O) as well as in bulk milk samples (δ13C and δ15N) collected in 2014⁻2016. Different water and food sources were available during the winter (artesian water only and dry grass) and summer (artesian water and fresh grass), and spring and autumn seasons reflected transitional periods. Oxygen stable isotope ratios in milk water were relatively lower in winter and transitional seasons and higher in summer, showing the dependence on the main water source. δ13C values reflected particular food sources. This study shows the applicability of the stable isotope ratio method in linking cow milk to specific environments and reveals the amount of variation in stable isotope ratios in the same area. These results could be valuable for other studies on geographical origin determination of dairy products.

In the present study, a combination of the stable carbon isotope ratio (13C/12C) with radiocarbon data (14C) allowed us to perform the aerosol source apportionment. Filter samples of PM1 were collected during the warm and cold periods in rural and urban sites in Lithuania. The 14C/12C ratio of total carbon (TC) was measured using the single stage accelerator mass spectrometer quantifying of fossil and non-fossil derived aerosol emissions. The δ13C value was measured using an elemental analyser interfaced with an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. We have found that the highest fraction of contemporary carbon (fc = 0.82) was measured during a warm period in a rural location. A higher fraction of fossil fuel-derived carbon was observed for air masses transported from highly industrialized Western European regions during both seasons. Isotope mass balance calculations revealed that the traffic emissions composed 15 and 25 % in rural and urban sites, respectively, and did not change during either season. Input from coal-derived aerosol particles was estimated to be 15 % at an urban site during the cold period. The combination of the stable carbon isotope ratio with the radiocarbon data allowed us to distinguish coal, liquid fossil fuel combustion, and non-fossil derived aerosol particle emissions.

Stable nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) are used as indicators of trophic position (TP) of consumers. Deriving TP from δ15N of individual amino acids (AAs) is becoming popular in ecological studies, because of lower uncertainty than TP based on bulk δ15N (TPbulk). This method would also facilitate biomagnification studies provided that isotope fractionation is unaffected by toxic exposure. We compared TPAA and TPbulk estimates for a sediment-dwelling bivalve from two coastal sites, a pristine and a contaminated. Chemical analysis of PCB levels in mussels, sediments, and pore water confirmed the expected difference between sites. Both methods, but in particular the TPAA underestimated the actual TP of bivalves. Using error propagation, the total uncertainty related to the analytical precision and assumptions in the TP calculations was found to be similar between the two methods. Interestingly, the significantly higher intercept for the regression between TPAA and TPbulk in the contaminated site compared to the pristine site indicates a higher deamination rate due to detoxification as a result of chronic exposure and a higher 15N fractionation. Hence, there is a need for controlled experiments on assumptions underlying amino acid-specific stable isotope methods in food web and bimagnification studies.
