BACKGROUND: Hemibagrus punctatus (Jerdon, 1849) is a critically endangered bagrid catfish endemic to the Western Ghats of India, whose population is declining due to anthropogenic activities. The current study aims to compare the mitogenome of H. punctatus with that of other Bagrid catfishes and provide insights into their evolutionary relationships. METHODS AND RESULTS: Samples were collected from Hemmige Karnataka, India. In the present study, the mitogenome of H. punctatus was successfully assembled, and its phylogenetic relationships with other Bagridae species were studied. The total genomic DNA of samples was extracted following the phenol-chloroform isoamyl alcohol method. Samples were sequenced, and the Illumina paired-end reads were assembled to a contig length of 16,517 bp. The mitochondrial genome was annotated using MitoFish and MitoAnnotator (Iwasaki et al., 2013). A robust phylogenetic analysis employing NJ (Maximum composite likelihood) and ASAP methods supports the classification of H. punctatus within the Bagridae family, which validates the taxonomic status of this species. In conclusion, this research enriches our understanding of H. punctatus mitogenome, shedding light on its evolutionary dynamics within the Bagridae family and contributing to the broader knowledge of mitochondrial genes in the context of evolutionary biology. CONCLUSIONS: The study's findings contribute to a better understanding of the mitogenome of H. punctatus and provide insights into the evolutionary relationships within other Hemibagrids.

The present study demonstrates the spatial analysis and mapping of fish and different measures of environmental parameters and fish diversity of Pong reservoir, Himachal Pradesh, using Kriging spatial interpolation methods for geographical information system mapping. Seasonal data on environmental parameters, potential fish habitat and fish diversity was collected from lentic (dam), lentic (reservoir), transitional and lotic zone of the reservoir.. Important environmental parameters like water temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, water depth and transparency showed variations across the different zones of the reservoir. The sediment of the reservoir was sandy clay loam in nature as per texture analysis. Fish species richness, Shannon index and evenness index showed a similarity of the lotic and lentic (reservoir) zones of the reservoir. Six potential fish breeding grounds were identified in the reservoir indicating high conservation significance. The analysis of data showed a declining trend in fish production from 456.9 tonnes during the decade 1976-1987 to 347.91 tonnes during 2009-2020. The factors like anthropogenic climate change, predation of a stocked fish juvenile by water birds, undersized fish stocking and unscientific management are the probable reasons for the decreasing fish production. The spatial variation pattern of the water spread area, environmental parameters, fish catch and potential fish breeding grounds depicted in the GIS platform can be used as an important information base by the policy makers for fisheries management. The stocking of large size fish as a stocking material and adequate protection of the potential fish breeding grounds are the key advisories for the sustainable enhancement of fisheries as well as conservation.

Lymphadenopathy is a common problem encountered in day to day clinical practices in Bangladesh. It is an abnormal increase in size and/or altered consistency of lymph nodes. The condition generally is not a disease itself but a symptom of one of many possible underlying problems. So it is very much essential to achieve a correct diagnosis of patients presenting with lymphadenopathy. This cross sectional study carried out at the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Mymensingh over a period of 6 months from January 2014 to June 2014. This study was carried out to evaluate the clinical presentations and to see the ultimate diagnosis by appropriate investigations of lymphadenopathy patients. It is a male predominance study. Metastatic carcinoma (Met. Ca) belonged to relatively higher age group, tuberculosis (TB) and acute leukaemias belonged to younger age group and lymphoma belonged to middle age group. Among 50 cases metastatic carcinoma comprises total 14(28%), lymphoma 13(26%), tuberculosis (TB) 12(24%), acute leukaemia 7(14%), non-specific (Non Sp.) 4(8%) cases. Among lymphoma non Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) was 10 (20%) then Hodgkin's disease (HD) was 3(6%) and among acute leukaemia acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) was 5(10%) and acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML) was 2(4%) cases. Most of the patients belong to younger age groups, 32% cases were from 18-30 years. Most of the patients had generalized lymphadenopathy. Biopsy of lymph node was done in 60% cases. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was done in 24% cases. Bone marrow study (BMD) was done in 14% cases include all cases of leukemia. Among 50 patients correct clinical diagnosis were found 100% cases of ALL and non-specific infection, 80% cases of metastatic carcinoma, 66.66% cases of AML and NHL, 62.5% cases of TB, 50% cases of HD. AML and ALL were diagnosed by bone marrow study. Over all 70% of clinical diagnosis were found correct in this study. In conclusion malignancy, lymphoma and tuberculosis were the most common cause of lymphadenopathy patients. Most of the cases were diagnosed by taking appropriate history and examination but FNAC, biopsy and bone marrow study were need for final diagnosis.

Eutrophication level in lakes and reservoirs depends on both internal and external phosphorus (P) load. Characterization of sediment P fractionation and identifying the P pollution sources are important for assessing the bio-availability of P and the dominant P source, for effectively controlling the water pollution. For determining the availability and sources of sediment P and eutrophication status, spatio-temporal variation in different P fractionation of sediment of hyper-eutrophic Krishnagiri reservoir, Tamil Nadu, India, was investigated. Sediment average total P (TP) content ranged from 4.62 to 5.64 g/kg. Main phosphorus form was the inorganic P (IP), and it makes up to 73.4-87.7% of TP. Among the different P fraction, viz. calcium bound (Ca-P), iron bound (Fe-P), aluminium bound (Al-P), exchangeable (Ex-P) and Organic-P (Org-P), Ca-P was the dominating fraction in both IP and TP. Trend of IP fraction was as follows: Ca-P > Fe-P > Al-P > Ex-P in pre-monsoon season, Fe-P > Ca-P > Al-P > Ex-P in monsoon and Ca-P > Al-P > Fe-P > Ex-P in post-monsoon. Overall the trend was as follows Ca-P > Fe-P > Al-P > Org-P > Ex-P. Bio-available-P (BAP) fractions ranged from 35.2 to 64.0% of TP, indicating its comparative higher value. Pearson's correlation matrix revealed that there was strong correlation among the different P fractions. Factor analysis indicates that different fractions of P were the dominating factor than the other sediment parameters. The observed variation in sediment P fractionation indicate the differences in source and characterization of P which is very helpful for implementation of effective management practices in controlling pollution that arises due to phosphorus in this hyper-eutrophic reservoir.

Disease of the spinal cord is called myelopathy which are frequently devastating. They produce motor weakness in the form of quadriplegia or paraplegia, sensory impairment, with a definite anatomical level, and loss of sphincteric function far beyond the site of damage. Many spinal cord diseases are reversible if known and treated at an early stage. Purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical presentation and aetiology of myelopathic patients on the basis of history, clinical examination and investigations. Patients getting admission in indoor of Medicine, Neuromedicine and Neurosurgery units of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Rajshahi, Bangladesh from March 2013 to August 2013, having complains of spastic paraplegia and quadriplegia or flaccid type of paralysis with sensory level or bowel bladder disturbance. This cross-sectional descriptive study was done with total 44 myelopathic patients were evaluated. Out of 44 patients, 75% were male and 25% were female (ratio 3:1), mean age 35±13.9 years (range 13-65 years). Among them 54.5% patients had paraparesis and 45.5% patients had quadriparesis. Sensory disturbance had 70.45%, 68.18% had urinary sphincter disturbance and 22.72% had bladder sphincter disturbance. Among the aetiology of myelopathy the commonest cause was cervical spondylotic myelopathy 31.8%, second cause was acute transverse myelitis 20.5% and third cause was Pott's disease 18.2%. It was observed that majority (75%) of them had compressive type and 25% patients had non-compressive type of involvement. Myelopathy was three times more common in male than female. Cervical spondylotic myelopathy & transverse myelopathy was the main aetiology of compressive and non compressive myelopathy respectively.

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Bangladesh is increasing. Chronic kidney disease refers to an irreversible deterioration in renal function which classically develops over a period of years. Initially, it manifest's only as a biochemical abnormality. Eventually loss of excretory, metabolic and endocrine functions of the kidneys leads to clinical symptoms and signs of renal failure, which are referred to as uraemia. In our country the number of CKD patient is increasing day by day, probably due to having uncontrolled DM, GN(Glumerulonephritis), uncontrolled hypertension, interstitial nephritis in addition to indiscriminate drugs & using of chemicals in fruits and foods. Objective of the study was to find out the morphological pattern of anaemia in patient with chronic kidney disease. This was a cross sectional observational study. This study was carried out at the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from January 2011 to June 2011. Patients admitted in medicine ward male or female who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study were taken as study subjects. The socio demographic characteristics, presenting symptoms, risk factors, investigations and findings of diagnostic modalities and outcome were recorded. Mean age was 55.8 years of the patients who were included in this study, youngest patient is of 19 years old & older one is of 85 years. In this study 33 patients were male & 17 patients were female. Thirty three (33) patients were suffering from normocytic normochromic anaemia, 11 were suffering from microcytic hypochromic anaemia & rest 6 were suffering from combined deficiency. Female patient were suffering mainly from microcytic hypochromic anaemia (58.8%) & male patient suffered from normocytic normochromic anaemia (69.7%). CKD patients also suffered from microcytic hypochromic anaemia & also from combined deficiency.

Factor-XI deficiency (FXID) is inherited as autosomal lethal recessive disorder of carrier Holstein-Friesian bulls. A 76 base pair segment insertion into exon 12 in Factor-XI gene causes FXID in cattle. Keeping this in view the present study was conducted to screen breeding bulls of both indigenous and exotic breeds for mutation in Factor-XI gene and to find out the frequency of FXID carrier animals in breeding bulls. A total of 120 bulls of different age group maintained at Frozen Semen Bull Station, India were randomly selected from different cattle breeds to screen presence of FXID syndrome in breeding sires. Genomic DNA was isolated from blood of the selected bulls. PCR parameters were standardized to obtain 244 and 320 bp amplicons. The results showed that 2 Sahiwal bulls out of 120 animals were carrier for FXID. Amplicons of the carrier animals were sequenced and annoted, which confirms a 76 bp insertion in the exon 12. Bleeding and clotting time showed considerable discrepancy in the carrier animals as compared to the normal animals. The findings of relative mRNA expression of Factor XI transcript revealed identical tendency in the carrier. The frequency of carrier animals and mutant allele was 2.5 % and 0.025 respectively. This study recommends for screening of breeding at AI bull centers in the country for FXID. The study also stands a merit for identification of FXID carrier in Bos indicus for the first time.

DNA barcoding is a promising technique for species identification using a short mitochondrial DNA sequence of cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene. In the present study, DNA barcodes were generated from 72 species of freshwater fish covering the Orders Cypriniformes, Siluriformes, Perciformes, Synbranchiformes, and Osteoglossiformes representing 50 genera and 19 families. All the samples were collected from diverse sites except the species endemic to a particular location. Species were represented by multiple specimens in the great majority of the barcoded species. A total of 284 COI sequences were generated. After amplification and sequencing of 700 base pair fragment of COI, primers were trimmed which invariably generated a 655 base pair barcode sequence. The average Kimura two-parameter (K2P) distances within-species, genera, families, and orders were 0.40%, 9.60%, 13.10%, and 17.16%, respectively. DNA barcode discriminated congeneric species without any confusion. The study strongly validated the efficiency of COI as an ideal marker for DNA barcoding of Indian freshwater fishes.

Our goal in developing Microphysiological Systems (MPS) technology is to provide an improved approach for more predictive preclinical drug discovery via a highly integrated experimental/computational paradigm. Success will require quantitative characterization of MPSs and mechanistic analysis of experimental findings sufficient to translate resulting insights from in vitro to in vivo. We describe herein a systems pharmacology approach to MPS development and utilization that incorporates more mechanistic detail than traditional pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) models. A series of studies illustrates diverse facets of our approach. First, we demonstrate two case studies: a PK data analysis and an inflammation response--focused on a single MPS, the liver/immune MPS. Building on the single MPS modeling, a theoretical investigation of a four-MPS interactome then provides a quantitative way to consider several pharmacological concepts such as absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion in the design of multi-MPS interactome operation and experiments.

OBJECTIVE: Patient-provider communication about complementary health approaches can support diabetes self-management by minimizing risk and optimizing care. We sought to identify sociodemographic and communication factors associated with disclosure of complementary health approaches to providers by low-income patients with diabetes. METHODS: We used data from San Francisco Health Plan's SMARTSteps Program, a trial of diabetes self-management support for low-income patients (n=278) through multilingual automated telephone support. Interviews collected use and disclosure of complementary health approaches in the prior month, patient-physician language concordance, and quality of communication. RESULTS: Among racially, linguistically diverse participants, half (47.8%) reported using complementary health practices (n=133), of whom 55.3% disclosed use to providers. Age, sex, race/ethnicity, nativity, education, income, and health literacy were not associated with disclosure. In adjusted analyses, disclosure was associated with language concordance (AOR=2.21, 95% CI: 1.05, 4.67), physicians' interpersonal communication scores (AOR=1.50, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.19), shared decision making (AOR=1.74, 95% CI: 1.33, 2.29), and explanatory-type communication (AOR=1.46, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.09). CONCLUSION: Safety net patients with diabetes commonly use complementary health approaches and disclose to providers with higher patient-rated quality of communication. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Patient-provider language concordance and patient-centered communication can facilitate disclosure of complementary health approaches.

First principle calculations with generalized gradient approximation were carried out to analyse the electronic and optical properties of armchair and zigzag graphyne nanotubes (GNTs). The possible application of these NTs in optoelectronic devices was also investigated. The GNTs were doped with boron (B) and nitrogen (N) atoms and the resulting band gap tuning was studied with respect to the B/N substitution site and increasing diameter of the NTs. The basis of this variation was examined using the partial density of states and crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis. A decreasing trend in the optical response was seen with an increase in the diameter of the NTs. The reported systems showed anisotropic behaviour in the low-energy region. The origin of the optical responses was monitored from the infrared to the UV region depending on the doping site of the B/N. As a result of the large band gap, low reflectivity and low refractive index, B/N GNTs have been established as a suitable system for novel optoelectronic devices. The strong absorption peaks in the UV region mean that they are a good choice for use in UV light protection.

AIM: On the basis of identified source of major bacterial infections at four agro-climatic zones in West Bengal the cost-effective biosecurity strategy was formulated for backyard poultry farmers. The aim of the present study was to assess the adoption. So, the study was aimed to detect the adoption level of the formulated biosecurity strategy to mitigate the Salmonella and Escherichia coliweek post-hatch period chicks were contamination level in the sources and its correlation with egg production in West Bengal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was prepared querying regarding the biosecurity measures presently followed by the farmers, if any and egg production of their birds. Subsequent to the interview the formulated biosecurity strategy was conveyed. After 3 months, the interview with the same questionnaire was conducted to the same farmers to detect their adoption level. RESULTS: The change in practices were noted in certain parameters which differs significantly (p<0.01 or p<0.05). As a consequence, the average egg production/flock was increased in 3 months after adoption of the strategy (618.2±37.77/flock) in comparison to last 3 months average before adoption of the strategy (495.3±30.00/flock) which also differs significantly (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: The present study detected the implementation of the biosecurity strategy in backyard poultry farming in West Bengal can substantially benefit the farmers in terms of increased egg production.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory tract infections due to viral etiology were studied with an objective to identify and compare the pathogens between Hospital Indoor and Outdoor Units. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among children below 12 years over a period of one year. The throat and nasal swabs were collected from both the Units and screened for viral infections by real time RT-PCR technique. RESULTS: Out of 880 samples collected, 87% and 13% were from outdoor and indoor Department with total viral positivity rate of 30% and 25% respectively. Influenza B virus (IBV) (n=126, 16%) was more prevalent in Outdoor Unit, whereas respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (n=18, 16%) among indoor admitted cases. The multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that both RSV and Influenza viruses were predominant in children of pre-school age groups < 5 years. In the year 2010-11, the prevalence of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) was low. The pandemic influenza A virus (pH1N1/2009) accounted for 4% (n=29) and 0.8% (n=1) cases among Outdoor and Indoor Units respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The Outdoor Department outnumbered the Indoor Unit in terms of patient attendees and the rate of viral infections. An effective vaccination and continuous surveillance program is the need of the hour.

The present study examined a total of 446 samples of Ompok bimaculatus and describes the condition factor, gonadosomatic index, length-length relationships, sex ratio, size at first maturity. The regression parameter 'b' ranged from 3.06 to 3.76 (r2 > 0.90). During the pre-monsoon, the allometric coefficient 'b' of the LWR was close to isometric value (b = 3.06) while that of overall was positive allometric (b = 3.31) although it suggested positive allometric growth in monsoon (b = 3.21), and post-monsoon (b = 3.76), periods. The values of condition factor ranged from 0.524 to 0.573. In the study, sex ratio ranged from 1:1.03 to 1:1.3. Males ranged from 14.0-26.6 cm while females varied from 11.2-29.0 cm in length. A significant difference in length at 50% maturity (p < 0.05) was found between both the sexes. First maturity stages in males and females were 22.3 cm and 23.2 cm, respectively. The smallest mature female was 22.0 cm L; the largest immature female was 26.8 cm L. The smallest mature male was 20.0 cm L; the largest immature male was 24.5 cm L. The results of the study could be useful to help in sustainable fisheries management in the Ghaghara River.

This study is based on the length-weight relationships (LWRs) of 2148 fishes, belonging to 8 families, 12 genera and 15 freshwater fish species (Wallago attu, Rite rita, Sperato seenghala, Sperota aor, Mostacembalus armatus, Macrognathus puncolus, Gudusia chopra, Clupisoma garua, Puntius sophore, Puntius ticto, Rasbora daniconius, Amblypharyngodon mole, Chanda noma, Colisa fociatus and Colisa sota) captured from river Ganga, Gomti and Rapti during May 2011 to March 2012. The growth coefficient (b) values varied between 1.30 and 3.07, with the mean b = 2.03 at p< 0.001. The condition factor (K) varied considerably from 0.76 and 2.95, with a mean K = 1.43 which may be attributed to different environmental conditions of the river basin. The objective was to evaluate the pattern of LWRs and condition factors of the freshwater fish species of the main Ganga and tributaries which serves as baseline for other tropical Indian rivers and tributaries.

This study was done to assess the relationship between proteinuria and ischemic stroke in subjects with diabetes mellitus, and to determine whether proteinuria is an independent risk factor for stroke. This comparative study was conducted in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital from January 2009 to June 2010. It was done to establish the relationship between proteinuria (Microalbuminuria) and ischemic stroke among diabetic patients. Other risk factors were also assessed. Patients were divided in Group A - diabetic patients with ischemic stroke (n=50) and Group B diabetic patients without stroke (n=50). Mean age of the Group A & B were 60.16±8.33 and 57.19±7.73 years (p=0.068). Mean Blood sugar (2 hours after Break Fast) was 14.68±4.32mmol/L in Group A and 14.75±4.02mmol/L in Group B (p>0.05). Albumin Creatinine ratio was abnormal in 84.0% in Group A and 22.0% in Group A (p=0.001) [Odds ratio (95%CI) = 18.61 (6.78-51.09)]. Logistic regression analysis has also shown that microalbuminuria (ACR) is an independent risk factor for ischemic stroke (p=0.001), [Odds ratio (95%CI) = 19.811(5.915-66.348)]. In diabetic patients increased urinary protein is a risk factor for stroke. Estimation of urinary protein (Microalbuminuria) may be used as a predictor for ischemic stroke in patients with diabetes.

AIM: A total of 625 faecal specimens of diarrheic cases (n-313) and non diarrheic controls (n-312), were screened by RT-PCR to detect Noroviruses in children aged below 5 years in Kolkata, India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of the 313 fecal specimens (cases) screened using CDC primer set, 10 (3.19%) showed amplification in reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for Norovirus. These included 5 of 260 (1.92%) from hospitalized and 5 of 53 (9.43%) from out patients departament (OPD) cases. RESULTS: Nine (90%) of Norovirus positive cases belonged to genogroup GII and one specimen (10%) was positive for genogroup GI. Among the 312 non diarrheic controls 2 (0.63%) were positive for Norovirus GII. Partial RNA dependent RNA polymerase gene (RdRp) sequences corresponding to the six Norovirus GII positive samples showed homology to the sequences of Djibouti (horn of Africa), Brazil, Italy, Japan and US norovirus strains. CONCLUSION: This study shows the detection of newly emerging Norovirus strains among diarrheic and non diarrheic children in Kolkata.

To understand the source of discrepancy in the qualitative trends in the reactivity of the spherically confined atoms/ions when the high pressure is generated through the use of a proper Dirichlet boundary condition [J. Chem. Sci. 2005, 117, 379; Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2008, 10, 1406] and of a cutoff function [Chem. Phys. Lett. 2003, 372, 805; J. Phys. Chem. A 2003, 107, 4877], a modified Herman-Skilman program is run. Results obtained from different formulas of reactivity parameters are analyzed. Change in reactivity for different electronic configurations is also reported. It is observed that the use of different formulas is the major source of discrepancy and not the Dirichlet condition, although the latter is highly recommended. As the cutoff radius of the confining spherical box decreases, the energy of the atom/ion increases, the electronegativity decreases, and the hardness increases and ultimately slightly decreases in an ultraconfined situation. For small R(C) values, softness decreases and electrophilicity increases and attains relatively small values. The reactivity of confined atoms/ions is put in a proper perspective.

BACKGROUND: Noroviruses (NoVs) are one of the major causal agents of acute gastroenteritis among different age groups. Some of the recent studies reveal that NoV genome is highly prone to mutation and recombination which often leads to emergence of new strains. OBJECTIVES: To explore the genetic diversity of human Caliciviruses (HuCVs) among diarrhoeic children in Kolkata. STUDY DESIGN: The HuCVs were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of the partial RNA dependent RNA polymerase gene (RdRp) and capsid gene and confirmed by sequencing. The sequences were analyzed and the recombination point was detected. RESULTS: Faecal specimens of children (n=111) visiting outpatient department of Dr B. C. Roy Memorial Hospital for Children with acute gastroenteritis were studied: 22 cases were HuCV positive with 21 NoVs. Of these, 12 NoV cases (54.5%) were GII.4 and six cases showed 99% identity with the new variant Japanese strain Hu/NoV/GII.4/OC07138/JP. Three novel NoV GII inter-genotype recombinant strains V1628/IND, V1656/IND and V1737/IND were also detected. The RdRp region of V1628 showed 96% identity with Pont de Roide 673/FRN whereas capsid region resembled GII.7/Osaka F140/JPN strain (98%); the strain V1656 showed 98% identity with RdRp region of GII.4/Monastir 375/TUN but capsid region resembled GII.8/Leverkusen 267/DE (91%); the strain V1737 showed 88% identity with RdRp of GII.5/Minato 6/N1/6/JPN whereas capsid region resembled the GII.12/Gifu 96/JPN (93%). During characterization of Caliciviruses two strains of NoV GII.b and one strain of each NoV GI.1/V1622/06/IND, GI.3/V1707/07/IND, GII.3/V1668/IND, GII.16/V1729/IND, Sapovirus GII.1/V1716/IND were also detected. CONCLUSIONS: The emergence of new variant of GII.4/2007, three novel NoV GII inter-genotype recombinant strains and various other NoVs, indicates the remarkable genetic diversity of the HuCVs as diarrhoeagenic viruses circulating in Kolkata, India.

RESUMEN

A child with Jervell-Lange Nielsen syndrome is presented from Kolkata. Family study showed that the other family members are suffering from long QT syndrome. The child had frequent syncopal attack and very prolonged QT interval requiring left cardiac sympathetic denervation and beta-blocker therapy as patient could not afford implantable defibrillator and cardiac pacing.
