RESUMEN

We synthesized a perovskite-type RbNbO3 at 1173 K and 4 GPa from non-perovskite RbNbO3 and investigated its crystal structure and properties towards ferroelectric material design. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed an orthorhombic cell in the perovskite-type structure (space group Amm2, no. 38) with a = 3.9937(2) Å, b = 5.8217(3) Å, and c = 5.8647(2) Å. This non-centrosymmetric space group is the same as the ferroelectric BaTiO3 and KNbO3 but with enhanced distortion. Structural transition from orthorhombic to two successive tetragonal phases (Tetra1 at 493 K, Tetra2 at 573 K) was observed, maintaining the perovskite framework before reverting to the triclinic ambient phase at 693 K, with no structural changes between 4 and 300 K. The first transition is similar to that of KNbO3, whereas the second to Tetra2, marked by c-axis elongation and a significant cp/ap ratio jump (from 1.07 to 1.43), is unique. This distortion suggests a transition similar to that of PbVO3, where an octahedron's oxygen separates along the c-axis, forming a pyramid. Ab initio calculations simulating negative pressure like thermal expansion predicted this phase transition (cp/ap = 1.47 at -1.2 GPa), aligning with experimental findings. Thermal analysis revealed two endothermic peaks, with the second transition entailing a greater enthalpy change and volume alteration. Strong second harmonic generation signals were observed across Ortho, Tetra1, and Tetra2 phases, similar to BaTiO3 and KNbO3. Permittivity increased during the first transition, although the second transition's effects were limited by thermal expansion-induced bulk sample collapse. Perovskite-type RbNbO3 emerges as a promising ferroelectric material.

Background: Cardiac autonomic function (CAF) decreases with aging, and Acanthopanax senticosus Harms (ASH) consumption reportedly induces anti-stress effects. This study aimed to assess the effect of continuous supplementation of ASH on CAF during resting and standing tests in the elderly population. Methods: This double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in the morning in a laboratory setting and was carried out between June 2017 and July 2017 at Kambaikan, Doshisha University (Karasuma-higashi-iru, Imadegawa-dori, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto 602-8580, Japan). In total, 28 community-dwelling elderly individuals (mean ± standard deviation = 72.5 ± 4.5 years) were included. Each subject was instructed to consume ASH or placebo supplements twice daily for 4 weeks. An autonomic reflex orthostatic tolerance recorder was used to measure CAF in pre- and post-intervention phases. Parameters were measured in a seated position and included coefficient of variation of R-R intervals (CVRR), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), LF/HF ratio, blood pressure, and heart rate (HR). Changes in each parameter were evaluated before and after standing. All parameters were defined as the difference between the mean value obtained in a standing position for 2 min and that obtained in a 2-min seated position. Results: A two-way analysis of variance revealed a significant group-time interaction effect on CVRR, HF, and ΔLF/HF ratio. Following the intervention, CVRR, HF, LF/HF ratio, systolic blood pressure (SBP), HR, ΔLF/HF ratio, ΔSBP, and ΔHR improved significantly in the ASH group only. Conclusions: Four-week supplementation of ASH improved CAF in community-dwelling elderly individuals during resting and standing tests. RESUMEN

Although droplet microfluidics has been studied for the past two decades, its applications are still limited due to the low productivity of microdroplets resulting from the low integration of planar microchannel structures. In this study, a microfluidic system implementing inverse colloidal crystals (ICCs), a spongious matrix with regularly and densely formed three-dimensional (3D) interconnected micropores, was developed to significantly increase the throughput of microdroplet generation. A new bottom-up microfabrication technique was developed to seamlessly integrate the ICCs into planar microchannels by accumulating non-crosslinked spherical PMMA microparticles as sacrificial porogens in a selective area of a mold and later dissolving them. We have demonstrated that the densely arranged micropores on the spongious ICC of the microchannel function as massively parallel micronozzles, enabling droplet formation on the order of >10 kHz. Droplet size could be adjusted by flow conditions, fluid properties, and micropore size, and biopolymer particles composed of polysaccharides and proteins were produced. By further parallelization of the unit structures, droplet formation on the order of >100 kHz was achieved. The presented approach is an upgrade of the existing droplet microfluidics concept, not only in terms of its high throughput, but also in terms of ease of fabrication and operation.

OBJECTIVE: Conventionally, knee extension strength is often used as the indicator for lower limb muscle strength; however, several recent studies have also used quadriceps setting strength. This study aimed to investigate and compare the association of quadriceps setting and knee extension strength with health-related physical fitness. METHODS: We evaluated quadriceps setting strength and isometric knee extension strength in 75 elderly subjects (mean age, 76.8±5.3 years) to determine their lower limb muscle strength. Health-related physical fitness was evaluated using the physical fitness test advocated by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. The test consists of the following components: grip strength, sit-up, sit and reach, one leg standing with eyes open, 10 m obstacle walk and 6 min walk. RESULTS: When adjusted for age, sex and body mass index, quadriceps setting strength was significantly correlated with grip strength, number of sit-ups, sit and reach distance, 10 m obstacle walking time and 6 min walking distance. In contrast, knee extension strength was associated only with grip strength and number of sit-ups. CONCLUSION: More health-related physical fitness parameters with quadriceps setting strength than knee extension strength. Quadriceps setting strength may be superior to knee extension strength as a predictor of health-related physical fitness.

The low-temperature (LT) superstructure and the phase transition temperature have been investigated for a series of Cd6M crystalline approximants by transmission electron microscopy as well as electrical resistivity measurements. Except for M = Lu, Cd6M is found to undergo a phase transition to a monoclinic phase at a low temperature and the transition temperature (Tc) scales well with the size of the M atom. For M = Ca, Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm the LT superstructure is explained by a √2a × a × âˆš2a lattice with the space group C2/c, and for M = Sr and Yb a √2a × 2a × âˆš2a monoclinic lattice with P2/m. On the other hand, no phase transition is observed for M = Lu, indicating that a Cd4 tetrahedron at the cluster center remains disordered down to the lowest temperature, i.e. 16 K. It is shown that the volume inside the Cd20 dodecahedron plays a crucial role in the occurrence of the phase transition, and long-term aging in particular promotes the phase transition for late rare-earth elements such as Ho, Er and Tm, suggesting that the transition is sensitive to and is even hindered by disorder such as atomic vacancies. The absence of the transition for M = Lu is attributed to the highest activation energy for the transition due to the smallest volume inside the Cd20 dodecahedron.
