RESUMEN

The SuperCam instrument, onboard the Perseverance rover (Mars 2020 mission) is designed to perform remote analysis on the Martian surface employing several spectroscopic techniques such as Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman (TRR), Time-Resolved Fluorescence (TRF) and Visible and Infrared (VISIR) reflectance. In addition, SuperCam also acquires high-resolution images using a color remote micro-imager (RMI) as well as sounds with its microphone. SuperCam has three main subsystems, the Mast Unit (MU) where the laser for chemical analysis and collection optics are housed, the Body Unit (BU) where the different spectrometers are located inside the rover, and the SuperCam Calibration Target (SCCT) located on the rover's deck to facilitate calibration tests at similar ambient conditions as the analyzed samples. To perform adequate calibrations on Mars, the 22 mineral samples included in the complex SCCT assembly must have a very homogeneous distribution of major and minor elements. The analysis and verification of such homogeneity for the 5-6 replicates of the samples included in the SCCT has been the aim of this work. To verify the physic-chemical homogeneity of the calibration targets, micro Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) imaging was first used on the whole surface of the targets, then the relative abundances of the detected elements were computed on 20 randomly distributed areas of 100 × 100 µm. For those targets showing a positive Raman response, micro-Raman spectroscopy imaging was performed on the whole surface of the targets at a resolution of 100 × 100 µm. The %RSD values (percent of relative standard deviation of mean values) for the major elements measured with EDXRF were compared with similar values obtained by two independent LIBS set-ups at spot sizes of 300 µm in diameter. The statistical analysis showed which elements were homogeneously distributed in the 22 mineral targets of the SCCT, providing their uncertainty values for further calibration. Moreover, nine of the 22 targets showed a good Raman response and their mineral distributions were also studied. Those targets can be also used for calibration purposes of the Raman part of SuperCam using the wavenumbers of their main Raman bands proposed in this work.

RESUMEN

The ChemCam instrument, which provides insight into martian soil chemistry at the submillimeter scale, identified two principal soil types along the Curiosity rover traverse: a fine-grained mafic type and a locally derived, coarse-grained felsic type. The mafic soil component is representative of widespread martian soils and is similar in composition to the martian dust. It possesses a ubiquitous hydrogen signature in ChemCam spectra, corresponding to the hydration of the amorphous phases found in the soil by the CheMin instrument. This hydration likely accounts for an important fraction of the global hydration of the surface seen by previous orbital measurements. ChemCam analyses did not reveal any significant exchange of water vapor between the regolith and the atmosphere. These observations provide constraints on the nature of the amorphous phases and their hydration.

RESUMEN

"Jake_M," the first rock analyzed by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instrument on the Curiosity rover, differs substantially in chemical composition from other known martian igneous rocks: It is alkaline (>15% normative nepheline) and relatively fractionated. Jake_M is compositionally similar to terrestrial mugearites, a rock type typically found at ocean islands and continental rifts. By analogy with these comparable terrestrial rocks, Jake_M could have been produced by extensive fractional crystallization of a primary alkaline or transitional magma at elevated pressure, with or without elevated water contents. The discovery of Jake_M suggests that alkaline magmas may be more abundant on Mars than on Earth and that Curiosity could encounter even more fractionated alkaline rocks (for example, phonolites and trachytes).

RESUMEN

Tissint (Morocco) is the fifth martian meteorite collected after it was witnessed falling to Earth. Our integrated mineralogical, petrological, and geochemical study shows that it is a depleted picritic shergottite similar to EETA79001A. Highly magnesian olivine and abundant glass containing martian atmosphere are present in Tissint. Refractory trace element, sulfur, and fluorine data for the matrix and glass veins in the meteorite indicate the presence of a martian surface component. Thus, the influence of in situ martian weathering can be unambiguously distinguished from terrestrial contamination in this meteorite. Martian weathering features in Tissint are compatible with the results of spacecraft observations of Mars. Tissint has a cosmic-ray exposure age of 0.7 ± 0.3 million years, consistent with those of many other shergottites, notably EETA79001, suggesting that they were ejected from Mars during the same event.

RESUMEN

The seismologically delineated transition zone, at depths between 400 and 670 kilometers, is a fundamental discontinuity in the earth that separates the upper mantle from the lower mantle. Xenoliths from within or close to the transition zone are dominated by pyropic garnet and associated pyroxene or mineralogically heterogeneous garnet lherzolite. These xenoliths show evidence for the high-pressure (90 to 120 kilobars) transformation of pyroxene to a solid solution of pyroxene in garnet (majorite) and silicon in octahedral coordination; low-pressure (less than 80 kilobars) exsolution of clinopyroxene or orthopyroxene from the original majorite is preserved. Although mineral modes and rock proportions below the transition zone and the relative amount of eclogite present cannot be accurately assessed from the xenoliths, it is likely that both majorite and beta-spinel help produce the observed seismic gradient of the transition zone.

RESUMEN

Geophysical discontinuities in Earth's upper mantle and experimental data predict the structural transformation of pyroxene to garnet and the solid-state dissolution of pyroxene into garnet with increasing depth. These predictions are indirectly verified by omphacitic pyroxene exsolution in pyropic garnet-bearing xenoliths from a diamondiferous kimberlite. Conditions for silicon in octahedral sites in the original garnets are met at pressures greater than 130 kilobars, placing the origin of these xenoliths at depths of 300 to 400 kilometers. These ultradeep xenoliths support the theory that the 400-km seismic discontinuity is marked by a transition from peridotite to eclogite.

RESUMEN

Because of the discovery of uric acid urolithiasis in rats after end-to-side portacaval anastomosis (PCA), uric acid metabolism was studied in these animals and in appropriate controls. Hyperuricemia and hyperuricosuria were observed in all experimental rats. The fraction of purine catabolites excreted in the urine as uric acid increased from an average of 4.8% to 15.3%. If 14C-uric specifically labeled at position 6 (6-14C-ua) was infused intravenously and the exhalation of 14CO2 was used to calculate a hepatic uric acid clearance, it decreased from 2.14 to 0.97 ml/min/100 gm despite a normal content of hepatic uricase activity as measured in liver homogenates. The fraction of the filtered amount of uric acid excreted in the urine increased from an average of 11% to 30%. Increased supersaturation of the urine with uric acid after PCA may be expected to contribute to the formation of uric acid urolithiasis. This investigation defines a hepatic and renal functional defect in uric acid metabolism which occurs as a result of the PCA.

RESUMEN

The consequences of a portacaval shunt on liver function were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Fourteen days after an end-to-side portacaval anastomosis the galactose elimination capacity and the plasma clearance of indocyanine green were reduced in proportion to the approximately 50% loss in liver mass. The biliary transport maximum for sulfobromophthalein, on the other hand, decreased by almost 70% from 153 to 52 nmoles per min per min per 100 g after portacaval anastomosis. This reduction of sulfobromophthalein excretion was accompained by a significant decrease in the hepatic conjugation of the dye to glutathione. Our findings demonstrate that a quantitative and qualitative functional deterioration of previously normal livers results from portal blood deprivation.
