PURPOSE: Assistive technologies have the potential for supporting people with memory complaints in their daily life. User-centered interaction design research helps developers to create systems that are suitable for users. The aim of this work is to describe the methodology and the results of the usability test for the first Memento prototype involving users. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In each country, 5 subjects with different levels of cognitive reserve and technical proficiency were enrolled in Italy, Austria and Spain, respectively (15 subjects; 6 M; 9 F, age 72.8 ± 10.8 years, MMSE score 25.6 ± 1.6). Observation methods, performance metrics and the System Usability Scale were used to collect data. RESULTS: The results are presented in terms of design, technical problems, target-group-related challenges and usability perception from the participant perspective. Suggestions for improvement were pointed out by the users. Considering the usability scores interpretation, the first prototype was classified as "OK" and "Good" by users. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the Lab Trials provide important information on usability and the users' needs in order to improve the Memento prototype and to create a final system to be evaluated during the Field Trials phase of the project.Implication for rehabilitationThe MEMENTO project mission is to improve the quality of life of people in the early and middle stages of dementia, by supporting the management of daily activities that are usually affected by the loss of memory and cognition. The Lab Trial phase is essential to have feedback on the usability of the Memento prototype to allow a better understanding of users' needs and expectations.

BACKGROUND: Assistive technologies have the potential to facilitate everyday life of people with dementia and their families. Close collaboration with affected people and interdisciplinary research are essential to understand and address the needs of prospective users. In this study, we present the results of the evaluation of such an assistive system prototype. AIMS: Challenges from the patient and caregiver side, technical and design problems and acceptance and usability with regard to our special target group were evaluated. METHODS: MEMENTO, a system of two e-ink tablets and a smartwatch, was tested in the domestic environment of dementia patients. Thirty participants from Italy, Spain and Austria took part in a 3-month field trial and compared the MEMENTO system to traditional strategies in everyday life. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and frequency of use of the system was monitored. RESULTS: There were no significant changes in quantitative measurements, such as activities of daily living and caregiver burden over the duration of the 3-month field trial. More frequent usage was significantly correlated with positive attitude towards technology (r = 0.723, p < 0.05), but not with age. The design of the system was positively emphasized, reducing fear of the technology on the one hand and stigmatization on the other. CONCLUSION: We show that a positive attitude towards technology is the essential variable for successful implementation of such systems, regardless of age. Participants showed great interest in digital solutions and agreed that technological systems will help in maintaining independency of persons with cognitive dysfunction in the future.

Mayotte is an island located in the Mozambique Channel, between Mozambique and Madagascar, in the South Western Indian Ocean region. A severe syndrome of unknown aetiology has been observed seasonally since 2009 in cattle (locally named "cattle flu"), associated with anorexia, nasal discharge, hyperthermia and lameness. We sampled blood from a panel of those severely affected animals at the onset of disease signs and analysed these samples by next-generation sequencing. We first identified the presence of ephemeral bovine fever viruses (BEFV), an arbovirus belonging to the genus Ephemerovirus within the family Rhabdoviridae, thus representing the first published sequences of BEFV viruses of African origin. In addition, we also discovered and genetically characterized a potential new species within the genus Ephemerovirus, called Mavingoni virus (MVGV) from one diseased animal. Finally, both MVGV and BEFV have been identified in cattle from the same herd, evidencing a co-circulation of different ephemeroviruses on the island. The clinical, epidemiological and virological information strongly suggests that these viruses represent the etiological agents of the observed "cattle flu" within this region. This study highlights the importance of the strengthening and harmonizing arboviral surveillance in Mayotte and its neighbouring areas, including Africa mainland, given the importance of the diffusion of infectious diseases (such as BEFV) mediated by animal and human movements in the South Western Indian Ocean area.

Objective: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a common chronic pain disorder associated with altered activity of neurotransmitters involved in pain sensitivity such as dopamine, serotonin, and noradrenaline. FMS may significantly impact an individual's functioning due to the presence of chronic pain, fatigue, and cognitive impairment. Dyscognition may be more disabling than the chronic pain but is mostly under-recognized. This study aimed to assess the potential co-occurrence of FMS and adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder also associated with impaired cognition and dopaminergic function. Methods: In a cross-sectional observational study, 123 previously confirmed FMS patients were screened for adult ADHD using the World Health Organization Adult ADHD Self Report scale v1.1. The Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ-R) was used to assess the impact of FMS. Cognitive assessment was based on self-report in accordance with the 2011 modified American College of Rheumatology criteria and the FIQ-R, respectively. Results: Of the 123 participants, 44.72% (N = 55) screened positive for adult ADHD. Participants with both FMS and a positive adult ADHD screening test scored higher on the FIQ-R score (64.74, SD = 17.66, vs 54.10, SD = 17.10). Self-reported cognitive impairment was rated higher in the combined group (odds ratio = 10.61, 95% confidence interval; 3.77-29.86, P < 0.01). Conclusions: These results indicate that the co-occurrence of adult ADHD in FMS may be highly prevalent and may also significantly impact the morbidity of FMS. Patients with FMS should be assessed for the presence of adult ADHD.

RESUMEN

The potential role of Eulemur fulvus (brown lemur) in the epidemiology of Rift Valley fever (RVF) in Mayotte, during an interepidemic period, was explored. In February and March 2016, 72 animals were blood sampled and tested for RVF. No evidence of RVF genome or antibodies was found in the samples. The role of other wild mammals on the island should, however, be further investigated.

RESUMEN

We describe a learning-based approach to blind image deconvolution. It uses a deep layered architecture, parts of which are borrowed from recent work on neural network learning, and parts of which incorporate computations that are specific to image deconvolution. The system is trained end-to-end on a set of artificially generated training examples, enabling competitive performance in blind deconvolution, both with respect to quality and runtime.

OBJECTIVE: RGS proteins (regulators of G protein signalling) negatively regulate G protein function as GTPase activating proteins. By controlling heterotrimeric G proteins they may regulate myocardial hypertrophy and contractility. We investigated the expression of RGS proteins in the human heart and whether they take part in the pathophysiological changes of heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using RNase protection assays (RPAs) RGS2, 3L, 3S, 4, 5 and 6 were identified in the myocardium from terminally failing human hearts with dilated (DCM, n=22) or ischemic (ICM, n=18) cardiomyopathy and from nonfailing donor hearts (NF, n=9). With reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction in addition mRNA of RGS1, 9, 12, 14 and 16 were detectable. Compared to NF in failing LV myocardium RGS4 mRNA and protein was upregulated 2-3-fold (mRNA, 10(-21) mol/microg+/-S.E.M.: NF: 22+/-5, DCM: 51+/-10*, ICM: 37+/-8; P<0.05 vs. DCM+ICM, *P<0.05 vs. NF, P<0.05 vs. DCM+ICM; protein, % of NF+/-S.E.M.: NF: 100+/-35, DCM 266+/-60*, ICM: 205+/-64, n=5, *P<0.05 vs. NF). In contrast, RGS2, 3L, 3S, 5, 6, and 16 protein and mRNA levels did not vary between failing and NF hearts. In order to investigate the impact of RGS4 on Gq/11 mediated signalling, PLC activity was measured in human LV membranes. Recombinant RGS4 blunted the endothelin-1 (ET-1) stimulated PLC activity. When overexpressed by adenoviral mediated gene transfer in rabbit ventricular myocytes RGS4 abolished the inotropic effect of ET-1. CONCLUSION: The upregulation of RGS4 in failing human myocardium diminishes Gq/11-mediated signalling and can be involved in the desensitization of Gq/11-mediated positive inotropic effects.
