RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: The interaction between a propeller and its self-induced vortices originating on the ground is investigated in a scaled experiment. The velocity distribution in the flow field in two different planes containing the self-induced vortices is measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV). These planes are a wall-parallel plane in close proximity to the ground and a wall-normal plane just upstream of the propeller. Based on the visualization of the flow field in these two planes, the occurrence of ground vortices and its domain boundary are analysed. The elevation of the propeller from the ground and the thrust of the propeller are two parameters that determine the occurrence of ground vortices. The main features of the propeller inflow in the presence of the ground vortices are highlighted. Moreover, the analysis of the non-uniform inflow in the azimuthal direction shows that with increasing the propeller thrust coefficient and decreasing the elevation of the propeller above the ground, the variation of the inflow angle of the blade increases.

RESUMEN

The body-machine interfaces (BMIs) map the subjects' movements into the low dimensional control space of external devices to reach assistive and/or rehabilitative goals. This work is a first proof of concept of this kind of BMI as tool for rehabilitation after stroke. We designed an exercise to improve the control of selective movements of the pelvis in stroke survivors, increasing the ability to decouple the motion in the sagittal and frontal planes and decreasing compensatory adjustments at the shoulder girdle. A Kinect sensor recorded the movements of the subjects. Subjects played different games by controlling the vertical and horizontal motion of a cursor on a screen with respectively the lateral tilt and the ante/retroversion of their pelvis. We monitored also the degrees of freedom not directly involved in cursor control, thus subjects could complete the task only with a correct posture. Our preliminary results highlight significant improvement not only in cursor control, but also in the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) and in the Five Times Sit to Stand Test (5xSST).

Prior to their having a 1st trimester abortion, women's perceptions of social support from their partner, family, and friends and self-efficacy for coping were assessed. Depression, mood, physical complaints, and anticipation of negative consequences were measured after the 30-min recovery period. As predicted, perceived social support enhanced adjustment indirectly through its effects on self-efficacy. Women who perceived high support from their family, friends, and partners had higher self-efficacy for coping. Higher self-efficacy, in turn, predicted better adjustment on the psychological measures but not on the physical complaint measure. No direct path between social support and adjustment was observed. In addition, women who told close others of their abortion but perceived them as less than completely supportive had poorer postabortion psychological adjustment than either women who did not tell or women who told and perceived complete support.
