RESUMEN

The allegedly unconventional superconducting phase of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has been predicted to possess extraordinary thermal properties, as it is formed from a highly diluted electron ensemble with a record-low carrier density (n) of ∼1011 cm-2 and electronic heat capacity (Ce) of <100kB. While these attributes position MATBG as a ground-breaking material platform for revolutionary calorimetric applications, these properties have so far not been experimentally shown. Here, we reveal the thermal properties of superconducting MATBG by monitoring its temperature dependent critical current (Ic) under continuous laser heating at 1550 nm. From the bolometric effect, we extract the temperature dependence of the electronic thermal conductance (Gth), which has a value of Gth = 0.2 pW/K at 35 mK and in the low temperature limit is consistent with a power law dependence, as expected for nodal superconductors. Our work lays the foundation for future thermal transport studies on this system.

Heat capacity is an invaluable quantity in condensed matter physics and yet has been completely inaccessible in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials, owing to their ultrafast thermal relaxation times and the lack of suitable nanoscale thermometers. Here, we demonstrate a novel thermal relaxation calorimetry scheme that allows the first measurements of the electronic heat capacity of graphene. It is enabled by combining a radio frequency Johnson noise thermometer, which can measure the electronic temperature with a sensitivity of ∼20 mK/Hz1/2, and a photomixed optical heater that modulates Te with a frequency of up to Ω = 0.2 THz. This allows record sensitive measurements of the electronic heat capacity Ce < 10 -19 J/K and the fastest measurement of electronic thermal relaxation time τe < 10 -12 s yet achieved by a calorimeter. These features advance heat capacity metrology into the realm of nanoscale and low-dimensional systems and provide an avenue for the investigation of their thermodynamic quantities.

Integration of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) into functional optoelectronic circuitries requires an understanding of the charge transfer across the interface between the TMD and the contacting material. Here, we use spatially resolved photocurrent microscopy to demonstrate electronic uniformity at the epitaxial graphene/molybdenum disulfide (EG/MoS2) interface. A 10× larger photocurrent is extracted at the EG/MoS2 interface when compared to the metal (Ti/Au)/MoS2 interface. This is supported by semi-local density functional theory (DFT), which predicts the Schottky barrier at the EG/MoS2 interface to be ∼2× lower than that at Ti/MoS2. We provide a direct visualization of a 2D material Schottky barrier through combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with spatial resolution selected to be ∼300 nm (nano-ARPES) and DFT calculations. A bending of ∼500 meV over a length scale of ∼2-3 µm in the valence band maximum of MoS2 is observed via nano-ARPES. We explicate a correlation between experimental demonstration and theoretical predictions of barriers at graphene/TMD interfaces. Spatially resolved photocurrent mapping allows for directly visualizing the uniformity of built-in electric fields at heterostructure interfaces, providing a guide for microscopic engineering of charge transport across heterointerfaces. This simple probe-based technique also speaks directly to the 2D synthesis community to elucidate electronic uniformity at domain boundaries alongside morphological uniformity over large areas.

Because of the ultralow photon energies at mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies, in these bands photodetectors are notoriously underdeveloped, and broadband single photon detectors (SPDs) are nonexistent. Advanced SPDs exploit thermal effects in nanostructured superconductors, and their performance is currently limited to the more energetic near-infrared photons due to their high electronic heat capacity. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting magic-angle bilayer graphene (MAG) device that is theoretically capable of detecting single photons of ultralow energies by utilizing its record-low heat capacity and sharp superconducting transition. We theoretically quantify its calorimetric photoresponse and estimate its detection limits. This device allows the detection of ultrabroad range single photons from the visible to sub-terahertz with a response time around 4 ns and energy resolution better than 1 THz. These attributes position MAG as an exceptional material for long-wavelength single photon sensing, which could revolutionize such disparate fields as quantum information processing and radio astronomy.

Crystals with symmetry-protected topological order, such as topological insulators, promise coherent spin and charge transport phenomena even in the presence of disorder at room temperature. We demonstrate how to image and read out the local conductance of helical surface modes in the prototypical topological insulators Bi_{2}Se_{3} and BiSbTe_{3}. We apply the so-called Shockley-Ramo theorem to design an optoelectronic probe circuit for the gapless surface states, and we find a well-defined conductance quantization at 1e^{2}/h within the experimental error without any external magnetic field. The unprecedented response is a clear signature of local spin-polarized transport, and it can be switched on and off via an electrostatic field effect. The macroscopic, global readout scheme is based on an electrostatic coupling from the local excitation spot to the readout electrodes, and it does not require coherent transport between electrodes, in contrast to the conventional Landauer-Büttiker description. It provides a generalizable platform for studying further nontrivial gapless systems such as Weyl semimetals and quantum spin-Hall insulators.

Three-dimensional topological insulators are a class of Dirac materials, wherein strong spin-orbit coupling leads to two-dimensional surface states. The latter feature spin-momentum locking, i.e., each momentum vector is associated with a spin locked perpendicularly to it in the surface plane. While the principal spin generation capability of topological insulators is well established, comparatively little is known about the interaction of the spins with external stimuli like polarized light. We observe a helical, bias-dependent photoconductance at the lateral edges of topological Bi2Te2Se platelets for perpendicular incidence of light. The same edges exhibit also a finite bias-dependent Kerr angle, indicative of spin accumulation induced by a transversal spin Hall effect in the bulk states of the Bi2Te2Se platelets. A symmetry analysis shows that the helical photoconductance is distinct to common longitudinal photoconductance and photocurrent phenomena, but consistent with optically injected spins being transported in the side facets of the platelets.

Topological insulators constitute a fascinating class of quantum materials with nontrivial, gapless states on the surface and insulating bulk states. By revealing the optoelectronic dynamics in the whole range from femto- to microseconds, we demonstrate that the long surface lifetime of Bi2Te2Se nanowires allows us to access the surface states by a pulsed photoconduction scheme and that there is a prevailing bolometric response of the surface states. The interplay of the surface and bulk states dynamics on the different time scales gives rise to a surprising physical property of Bi2Te2Se nanowires: their pulsed photoconductance changes polarity as a function of laser power. Moreover, we show that single Bi2Te2Se nanowires can be used as THz generators for on-chip high-frequency circuits at room temperature. Our results open the avenue for single Bi2Te2Se nanowires as active modules in optoelectronic high-frequency and THz circuits.

AIMS: The study aimed to assess drug adherence, transfer to the vessel wall, tolerance and efficacy of a constrained angioplasty balloon coated with an excipient-enhanced paclitaxel coating (Chocolate coated balloon [CCB]) in the porcine model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Drug adherence was investigated in vitro. Drug transfer was evaluated in porcine arteries. A stent overstretch model was chosen to provoke intimal thickening in the efficacy and tolerance study. Conventional uncoated balloons were used as controls. CCB were coated with a nominal (3 µg/mm2) and high dose (two completely overlapping inflations each at 6 µg/mm2) of paclitaxel. Efficacy was assessed by histomorphometry and quantitative coronary angiography (QCA). Tolerance, including potential downstream effects, was assessed by myocardial function and histopathology. The CCB lost 6±12% of dose during in vitro simulated delivery to the lesion; drug transfer to the vessel wall was 14±4%. QCA and histomorphometry revealed no baseline differences between treatment groups. Thirty days after treatment, both doses of the CCB resulted in a 50% reduction in neointimal thickening of arteries relative to the uncoated balloon group. Maximum neointimal thickness was 1.12±0.36 mm for uncoated control specimens and 0.46±0.06 mm and 0.44±0.30 mm for the two CCB doses (3 and 2×6 µg/mm2), respectively. There were no device-related animal deaths or changes in left ventricular ejection fraction or device-specific myocardial histopathologies. There were no statistically significant differences between inflammatory scores among treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrate efficacy and tolerance of a mechanically unique constrained angioplasty balloon within the tested dose range of the selected paclitaxel coating in the chosen porcine preclinical model.

BACKGROUND: Peri-strut low-intensity area (PLI) is a common imaging finding during the evaluation of in-stent neointima using optical coherence tomography (OCT). We aimed to determine the biological significance of PLI by comparing in-vivo OCT images with the corresponding histological sections obtained from the familial hypercholesterolemic swine model of coronary stenosis. METHODS: A total of 26 coronary vessels of nine familial hypercholesterolemic swine were injured with 30% balloon overstretch and then immediately followed by everolimus eluting or bare metal stent placement at 20% overstretch. At 30 days, all stented vessels were subjected to in-vivo OCT analysis and were harvested for histological evaluation. For OCT analysis, stent cross-sections (three per stent) were categorized into presence (PLI+) or absence (PLI-) of PLI. In histology, inflammation and fibrin deposition were scored semiquantitatively from 0 (none) to 3 (severe). RESULTS: PLI was found in 64.9% of stent sections. Peri-strut inflammation was more frequently observed in OCT sections PLI (+) compared with PLI (-) (56.0 vs. 7.4%, P=0.01). In contrast, peri-strut fibrin deposits was similar in both groups (PLI+=58.0% vs. PLI-=59.3%, P=0.94). Histological neointimal thickness was significantly higher in PLI (+) sections (mean±SE: 0.68±0.06 vs. 0.34±0.02 mm; P<0.01), yielding a higher percent area stenosis compared with PLI (-) (mean±SE: 59.0±4.4 vs. 34.1±2.2%, P<0.01). The PLI diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for inflammation were 80 and 76.1%, respectively (>56% PLI, area under the curve=0.86, P<0.01), whereas for fibrin deposition, the sensitivity and specificity were 42.2 and 76.1%, respectively (area under the curve=0.56, P=NS). Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was significantly higher for identifying inflammation than fibrin (0.86 vs. 0.56, P<0.01). The severity of PLI correlated with the neointimal thickness when assessed by OCT (R=0.79, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The presence of PLI in OCT correlates with neointimal thickness and appears to have a diagnostic value in the recognition of peri-strut inflammation, therefore possibly serving as a surrogate for in-vivo assessment of stent efficacy.

BACKGROUND: The utility of animal models for the prediction of drug-eluting stent (DES) efficacy in human clinical trials is still unclear. The familial hypercholesterolemic swine (FHS) model has been shown to induce a human-like neointimal response to bare metal stent (BMS) implantation. However, its utility to discriminate efficacy signals following DES implantation is unknown. In this study, we aimed to test the efficacy and healing response of several everolimus-eluting stent (EES) platforms in the coronary territory of the FHS. METHODS: A total of 19 EES platforms (SYNERGY=6, SYNERGY½-dose=7, and PROMUS Element=6) and an identical BMS control (Element=6) were implanted into the coronary arteries of nine FHS. All implants were performed under intravascular ultrasound guidance using a 1.2 : 1 overstretch ratio. At 30 days, the vascular response to the implant was evaluated by quantitative coronary angiography, optical coherence tomography, and histology. RESULTS: At 28 days, all EES platforms showed a significant decrease in angiographic late lumen loss (between 27 and 37%) compared with the BMS control group. This finding was confirmed both by optical coherence tomography (mean neointimal thickness=28-42% reduction) and by histology (mean neointimal thickness=44-55% reduction). All EES platforms showed similar degrees of neointimal inhibition. The presence of moderate to severe para-strut inflammation was observed in 83% of the stent sections in the BMS group compared with 28.6% in the SYNERGY½-dose group and 0% in the SYNERGY and PROMUS groups (P=0.0002). There was a 68-95% reduction in MMP9 expression in the media in all EES platforms compared with the BMS controls. The presence of mild to moderate para-strut fibrin deposits ranged from 66.7 to 83.4% in all EES platforms compared with 16.7% in the EBMS group. CONCLUSION: The FHS coronary injury model showed the efficacy of several EES platforms compared with an identical BMS control. Everolimus eluted from different polymeric platforms showed lower levels of inflammation and slightly higher fibrin deposits compared with BMS controls.

BACKGROUND: Animal models used to gain insight into the vascular response to drug-eluting stents are generally juvenile and nonatherosclerotic, whereas stents are placed in patients with complex atherosclerosis and comorbidities. Hence, models reflecting these complexities are needed to help elucidate the vascular effects of drug-eluting stents. We compared the vascular responses with bare metal stent (BMS) and paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) implantation in a diabetic/hypercholesterolemic (DM/HC) porcine model of advanced coronary atherosclerosis with the standard juvenile porcine model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two studies using similar stent procedural protocols were performed in either DM/HC (n=20) or domestic swine (non-DM/HC, n=20). Animals pretreated with dual-antiplatelet therapy, underwent BMS or PES implantation (1/artery, 2 stents per animal) and were euthanized 30 or 90 days later. DM/HC resulted in a 24% increase in platelet aggregation (P=0.05 versus baseline), whereas dual-antiplatelet therapy reduced platelet aggregation in both groups (P<0.0001). DM/HC pigs developed substantially greater neointimal area versus non-DM/HC pigs, regardless of stent type, (P=0.004 for BMS at 30 days and P=0.002 at 90 days, P=0.005 for PES at 30 days, P=0.002 at 90 days). Compared with non-DM/HC pigs, reendothelialization was delayed in DM/HC pigs, more so after PES implantation. Increased para-strut leukocytes were observed for PES compared with BMS in the DM/HC pigs at both 30 days (P=0.023) and 90 days (P=0.04). As well, increased T-lymphocyte infiltration was seen in the DM/HC pigs. CONCLUSIONS: Stent implantation in a DM/HC swine model provides a metabolic environment closer to human disease, including hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and increased platelet aggregation. This model augmented differences in the vascular response between PES and BMS that are not as clearly evident in the non-DM/HC swine, including increased neointimal area, delayed reendothelialization, and greater, persistent vascular inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: To date, most of all new developments in stent technologies are tested in normal animals. Although invaluable in the evaluation of device safety, the juvenile domestic swine (DS) do not follow the biological healing response occurring in humans following coronary stent implantation. By using a novel swine breed afflicted with familial hypercholesterolemia (FHS), we aimed to analyse the vascular response occurring following bare metal stent (BMS) implantation by comparing in vivo endovascular imaging and histological data. METHODS: A total of 26 swine were included in this study (12 FHS and 14 DS). Sixty eight BMS (FHS=28 versus DS=40) were implanted using a 10% overstretch ratio. Imaging evaluation (IVUS and OCT) was conducted in all animals at 30 (n=14) or 90 (n=12) days following stent implantation. After imaging, the stented coronary segments were harvested for histological evaluation. RESULTS: At 30 days, the degree of neointimal formation analysed by OCT (%AS=DS 21.9 ± 10% versus FHS 25.4 ± 12%; p=0.18) and histology (DS 24.6 ± 10% versus FHS 23.58 ± 10%; p=0.8) was similar between both animal groups. At 90 days, the degree of neointimal formation in the DS group decreased in all analysed variables (-40% in IVUS neointimal volume, -57% in OCT %AS, and -30% in %AS by histology) compared to the progression of neointimal formation observed in the FHS group (+29% in IVUS neointimal volume, +27% in OCT %AS and +43% in %AS by histology). CONCLUSION: The pattern of neointimal formation following BMS implantation in the FHS follows a progressive course that does not occur in the DS. Therefore, by providing a progressive neointimal biological response to BMS implantation, the FHS could serve as an ideal efficacy model for the validation of drug eluting stent technologies.

BACKGROUND: The early response to the TAXUS Express2 paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) system was compared to the response to the Express2 bare metal stent (BMS) system in porcine arteries. METHODS: Swine coronary arteries were implanted with overlapping PES or BMS and examined at 1, 2, 4, 10, and 20 days postimplantation using scanning electron microscopy or light microscopy. RESULTS: Vascular healing in terms of strut coverage, reendothelialization, degree of inflammation, and absence of thrombus was equivalent in both groups from 1 to 20 days. Interstrut member spaces were unaffected by stent deployment and remained covered with endothelium from Day 1. In both groups at 2 days, small patches of endothelial cells covered approximately 5-10% of the stent surface. At 4 days, endothelial cell coverage progressed to nearly 50% in both groups. After 10 days, endothelial cell strut coverage was nearly complete (>90%), with regions of incomplete coverage located primarily in strut overlap regions in both groups. BMS exhibited a fibrocellular neointima and no parastrut fibrin, whereas PES exhibited a developing but immature fibrocellular neointima and prominent parastrut fibrin. By Day 20, an endothelialized neointima was present in both groups, with comparable coverage of proximal and distal stented regions. The neointima of PES was more fibrocellular and parastrut fibrin was still comparable to that at 10 days. CONCLUSION: Early vascular response was comparable for both PES and BMS, with similar rates of reendothelialization, limited inflammatory response, and absence of thrombus, but differed parastrut fibrin clearance and neointimal maturation rate.
