BACKGROUND: Probiotics such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are among the supportive treatment methods to achieve effective results in ulcerative colitis. This study was established to investigate the effect of probiotics in experimental ulcerative colitis and to detect changes in mast cell and neuronal structures in this treatment method. METHODS: A total of 48 adult male rats were used to study the effects of probiotics on ulcerative colitis. The animals were divided into 6 groups as control, experimental colitis, and four probiotic protective groups. Three different bacterial strains were administered to the protective groups individually and in combination by gavage. PGP 9.5 antibody and mast cell tryptase were used for the detection of neuronal structures and mast cells. The number of Schwann cells and ganglia, size measurements of ganglia, and density of mast cells were evaluated. RESULTS: Compared to the control, an increase in the number of mast cells was detected in all groups. Especially the increase in the num- ber of mast cells was found to be statistically significant in combined probiotic administration. In the detection of neuronal structures, a significant increase in the number of Schwann cells and ganglia was detected in groups where probiotics were administered combined and individually. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that probiotics may play a role in the supporting effect of increasing the number of mast cells and neuronal structures, protecting the intestinal wall. We think that more specific and detailed studies should be conducted to evaluate the protective/therapeutic effect of probiotics in future studies.

BACKGROUND: Depth sensor-based motion analysis systems are of interest to researchers with low cost, fast analysis capabilities, and portability; thus, their reliability is a matter of interest. Our study examined the agreement and reliability in estimating the basic shoulder movements of Azure Kinect, Microsoft's state-of-the-art depth sensor, and its predecessor, Kinect v2, by comparing them with the gold standard marker-based motion analysis system. METHODS: In our study, the shoulder joint ranges of motion of 20 healthy individuals were analyzed during dominant-side flexion, abduction, and rotation movements. The reliability and agreement between methods were evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Bland-Altman method. RESULTS: Compared to the gold standard method, the old- and new-generation Kinect showed similar performance in terms of reliability in the estimation of flexion (ICC = 0.86 vs. 0.82) and abduction (ICC = 0.78 vs. 0.79) movements, respectively. In contrast, the new-generation sensor showed higher reliability than its predecessor in internal (ICC = 0.49 vs. 0.75) and external rotation (ICC = 0.38 vs. 0.67) movement. CONCLUSION: Compared to its predecessor, Kinect Azure has higher reliability in analyzing movements in a lower range and variability, thanks to its state-of-the-art hardware. However, the sensor should also be tested on multiaxial movements, such as combing hair, drinking water, and reaching back, which are the tasks that simulate extremity movements in daily life.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians need accurate, reproducible, fast, and cost-effective grading systems to determine facial functions. There is currently no internationally accepted objective method to report the loss of function at the onset of facial paralysis and subsequent recovery. Our study aimed to test a three-dimensional handheld light scanner's efficacy for grading facial paralysis and monitoring recovery. METHODS: Sixty-one healthy volunteers (28 men and 33 women) aged between 20 and 75 years (mean 36.4 ± 11.9 years old) and 22 patients with facial palsy (10 male and 12 female patients) aged between 12 and 77 years (mean 47.6 ± 19.7 years old) were included in the study. The healthy individuals' and patients' facial scans were performed with a three-dimensional handheld scanner during different facial expressions at 3-month intervals. The asymmetry and intensity degree of each facial expression were determined in terms of the root mean square. RESULTS: After facial paralysis, a significant larger asymmetry value (1.2 ± 0.4 mm vs. 2.0 ± 0.8 mm and p<0.05) was determined as compared to the control group, while a significant smaller intensity value (2.3 ± 1.2 mm vs. 1.7 ± 0.9 mm and p<0.05) was observed. At the end of 3 months, both parameters showed a tendency to recover. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that three-dimensional morphological analyses may be an effective method to grade facial palsy. However, our data need to be confirmed by larger cohort size and more extended follow-up periods.

PURPOSE: The influences of porus acusticus internus (PAI) on ethnicity and differences between populations have not been investigated so far. Therefore, we performed this study to elucidate further the relationship between the different morphologies of PAI and ethnicity and to discuss their effects on surgery. METHODS: One hundred twenty dry adult human temporal bones (61 male, 59 female) were investigated in the study. Their horizontal diameter (HD), vertical diameter (VD), shape, prevalence of the shapes of PAI, and the distance from the sulcus for the sigmoid sinus (SSS), sulcus for superior petrosal sinus (SSPS), and jugular foramen (JF) of dry Turkish temporal bones were recorded. RESULTS: Forty-three (35.8%) elliptical (or transverse) and 77 (64.1%) oval (or round) PAI were detected in the Turkish dry temporal bones. On both sides, round PAI were identified more frequently than elliptical ones (32; 26.6% (left); 39; 32.5% (right)) (p < 0.05). There was a similarity between the Indian and Turkish dry temporal bones in terms of distance from the PAI to the SSPS (7-8 mm) and SSS (19-20 mm) (p = 0.01) and prevalence of morphology of PAI (oval and elliptical) (p = 0.04, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study provided a detailed understanding of the preoperative and intraoperative identification of different morphologies of PAI and ethnicity. The ethnicity might contribute to morphology of the PAI and it can be explain the similar forms and distances between the various ethnic populations.

Hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis (HFA) aims to reanimate denervated mimic muscles with hypoglossal axons when the transected facial nerve is not accessible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the recovery of HFA using a "Y" tube in two variants: (1) the proximal stump of the hypoglossal nerve was entubulated to the "Y" tube (classic "Y" tube HFA) and (2) the "Y" tube was sutured to an epineurial window of a slightly damaged hypoglossal nerve (end-to-side "Y" tube HFA). A total of 48 adult female rats were divided into four groups: intact controls (group 1), sham operated (group 2), classic "Y" tube HFA (group 3) and end-to-side "Y" tube HFA (group 4). The abdominal aorta with both common iliac arteries of isogeneic male rats served as the Y-tube conduit. Animals from group 4 recovered better than those from group 3: the degree of collateral axonal branching (3 ± 1%) was significantly lower than that determined in group 3 (13 ± 1%). The mean deviation of the tongue from the midline was significantly smaller in group 4 (6 ± 4°) than that measured in animals from group 3 (41 ± 6°). In the determination of vibrissal motor function in group 3 and group 4, a decrease in amplitude was found to be - 66% and - 92%, respectively. No differences in the reinnervation pattern of the target muscles were detected. As a result, these surgical models were not determined to be able to improve vibrissal movements. It was concluded that performance of end-to-side "Y" tube HFA diminishes collateral axonal branching at the lesion site, which in turn, promotes better recovery of tongue- and vibrissal-motor performance.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to document a detailed investigation on the sesamoid bones (SBs) of Turkish subjects from different parts of Turkey in a multi-center study, in both hands, according to gender, frequency and divisions of the bones' coexistence and bilaterality by radiography. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective and three-centered study was performed between June 2010 and April 2012. Sesamoid bones were examined by anteroposterior and oblique X-rays of 1,444 hands of 772 subjects (367 males, 405 females; mean age 42.7 years; range, 18 to 87 years). All X-rays were evaluated by at least two independent observers. In controversial circumstances, at least three observers together gave the final decision by consensus. RESULTS: Metacarpophalengeal (MCP) joint of the thumb (MCP 1) had sesamoid in all subjects (100%) and it was seen bilaterally. The prevalence of the SB was 42.8% in the second MCP joint (MCP 2) in 772 subjects and 36.6% in 1,444 hands, 1.6% in the third MCP joint (MCP 3) for the subjects and 1.1% for the hands, 0.1% in the fourth MCP joint (MCP 4) for the subjects and 0.1% for the hands, and 72.5% in the fifth MCP joint (MCP 5) for the subjects and 62.5% for the hands. The prevalence of SB in the first interphalangeal joint (IP 1) was 21.8% and SB was detected in 18.6% of the hands. Sesamoid bones of the MCP 2, MCP 5, and IP 1 was recorded more frequently in females. Sesamoid bone of the same joints (MCP 2, MCP 5 and IP 1) was detected more frequently bilaterally than unilateral right side and more frequently unilaterally on right side than unilateral left side. CONCLUSION: The distribution of SBs varies according to hand regions, gender, and side. Having knowledge of the locations and the rate of bilaterality of SBs may assist clinicians in both clinical and radiological diagnoses.

Recent developments in the field of insecticide exposure have led to a renewed interest in alternative antioxidant therapy. The present study was to investigate the neuroprotective role of syringic acid (SA, 25 mg/kg/day) on the neurotoxicity and oxidative damage induced by deltamethrin (DTM, 1.28 mg/kg/day during two months) in CA1/3 pyramidal neurons. Animals were divided into 4 groups (n = 16/group) (250-270 g) for control, DTM, SA and DTM + SA. DTM and SA were administered by oral gavage daily. Rats that were given sub-chronic DTM had revealed a significant increase in caspase-3 levels, impaired recognition memory, reduced antioxidant activity and enhanced free radicals in the hippocampus. The results showed that SA ameliorated neurobehavioral alterations, reduced reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, pyknosis in the CA1/3 and increased antioxidant enzyme activity. In conclusion, SA (25 mg/kg/day) had potential neuroprotective and therapeutic impacts against sub-chronic DTM exposure via its antioxidant and antiapoptotic efficacy. Therefore, it can be used as a neuroprotective natural plant-derived agent against DTM-induced neurotoxicity.

INTRODUCTION: Efforts to prevent iatrogenic neurovascular injuries with humeral intramedullary nailing lead to design new implants and inside to out distal locking technique using an endopin aims to provide a safer screw application. InSafeLock (TST, Istanbul, Turkey) humeral nail have been recently developed to minimize the possible screw related complications. The anatomical relationship between locking screws and neurovascular structures with the application time were compared between Trigen Humeral Nail (Smith and Nephew, Memphis, USA) and InSafeLock Humeral Nail. HYPOTHESIS: InSafeLock humeral nail would be safer than Trigen Humeral nail in terms of neurovascular injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven cadavers were used with both shoulders and surgical application of two nails was performed as the manufacturer guide. An Insafelock humeral nail was used for each right humerus and a Trigen humeral nail was used for each left humerus. Once the nails were placed, proximal and distal region of the nails were dissected to evaluate the relationship between screws and adjacent anatomical structures. The duration of the each screw was assessed via a stopwatch. RESULTS: No significant finding was noted for the relationship between the neurovascular structures and proximal screws in two groups (p<0.05). The distal locking of the InSafeLock humerus nail had a shorter application time and no neurovascular damage was recorded. DISCUSSION: The newly developed Insafelock humerus nails are at least as safe and effective as current humeral nails available on the market. Additional benefits include the preservation of neurovascular structures, as the Insafelock humerus nail does not require the use of an extra incision. Furthermore, surgical time is significantly shorter with using distal endopin. LEVEL OF STUDY: III, controlled laboratory study.

The aim of the present study is to test whether ultrasound therapy of muscles denervated by nerve injury would improve the quality of their reinnervation by reduction of the collateral axonal branching at the lesion site and poly-innervation degree at the neuromuscular junctions. After transection and suture of the buccal branch of the facial nerve, pulsed or continuous type of ultrasound therapy was applied to the paralyzed whisker pad muscles of rats in the course of 2 months. Instead of reduction, we found a significant increase in the collateral axonal branching after continuous ultrasound therapy when compared to the branching determined after pulsed or sham ultrasound therapy. Both types of ultrasound therapy also failed to reduce the proportion of polyinnervated end plates in the reinnervated facial muscles. Accordingly, continuous ultrasound therapy failed to restore any parameter of the motor performance of the vibrissal hairs. Application of pulsed ultrasound therapy promoted slight improvements of the functional parameters angular velocity and acceleration. The inhomogeneous structural and functional results achieved after both types of ultrasound therapy let us conclude that further studies are required to evaluate its effects on peripheral nerve regeneration. PURPOSE: The three-dimensional morphological analysis of facial expressions has been becoming increasingly common and hand-held three-dimensional scanners can be advantageous in data acquisition due to their mobility. The aim of the present study was to test intra-subject, intra-observer and inter-observer reproducibility and reliability of a hand-held scanner during facial expressions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to investigate intra-subject reproducibility and reliability, we performed face scanning two times on 30 healthy subjects at three-month intervals. In addition, two observers scanned twice the face of 10 healthy subjects consecutively to evaluate intra-observer and inter-observer differences. Scannings were performed during facial expressions. Face asymmetry and severity of facial expression were determined using root mean square (RMS) value. Repeated-measurement ANOVA was used to test the reproducibility and correlation coefficient to determine the reliability of the facial expressions. RESULTS: The mean RMS values measured at different times were not significantly different for any facial expression (p > 0.05). The reliability of the measurements was variable depending on the facial expression (r = 0.47 and 0.98, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study may contribute to the development of new techniques for examining facial expressions. Hereby, morphological analysis may be possible in the clinic and at the bedside without the need for laboratory conditions.

Hypertension is an important health problem that is manifested by systemic arterial blood pressure being permanently elevated and leading to serious complications. Hypertension is the basis for coronary heart diseases, heart failure, kidney damage, cerebrovascular diseases. Due to ethical concerns, there is no detailed study of the mechanism, side effects and treatment of hypertension in humans. For this reason, specific studies related to the organ of hypertension are performed in experimental animals. The heart and kidney tissue, which are the most important organs that hypertension has damaged, have formed specific organs of our work. In our experimental study, a total of 35 (hypertensive group: 20, control group: 15) Rattus Norvegicus Wistar albino rats were used. In order to obtain our hypertension model, our experimental animals were given L-NAME together with drinking water for six weeks. After six weeks, the experimental procedures were terminated. Heart and kidney tissues of the hypertensive and control group were obtained. Expression of apelin and apelin receptor (APJ) was demonstrated by immunohistochemical and Western Blot protocols. Hypertrophic cardiac atrium of the hearts of the large cavities, interventricular septum and myocardium to the disintegration, as well as an increase in the diameter of the coronary artery has been observed. In general, kidney tissues of the hypertensive group showed narrowing in cortical renal structures and enlargement in structures in the renal medulla. As a result, in hypertensive cases, there was an increase in expression of Apelin and APJ receptor in heart tissue, and a decrease in expression of Apelin and APJ receptor in kidney tissue. We think that our findings may contribute to experimental or clinical studies related to hypertension and apelin.

Accessory ossicles of the foot and ankle are normal variants of bone development that usually remain asymptomatic. However, they may be involved in various disorders and become a source of pain such as in fractures, dislocations, degenerative changes, osteonecrosis, osteoarthritis, osteochondral lesions, avascular necrosis, and irritation or impingement of adjacent soft tissues. Hence, during the assessment of the situations above, knowledge about these little-known ossicles could be very important to reach the correct diagnosis. Recent studies in the literature have mostly focused on the most frequent 9-12 accessory bones. In this review, 24 types of accessory ossicle are described. These ossicles are accessory navicular bone, os peroneum, os trigonum, os intermetatarseum, os vesalianum. os subfibulare, os subtibiale, os calcaneus secundarius, os calcanei accessorium, os supratalare, os sustentaculi, os talotibiale, os tali accessorium, talus secundarius, os subcalcis, os cuboideum secundarium, os supranaviculare, os infranaviculare, os paracuneiforme, os intercuneiforme, os cuneometatarsale I tibiale, os cuneometatarsale plantare, os cuneo-I metatarsale-II dorsale, and os aponeurosis plantaris. The clinical importance of these bones should be known thoroughly to reduce unnecessary orthopedic consultations and misdiagnosis. This article describes the clinical importance of the accessory ossicles and their possible pathological conditions. Understanding the possible disorders of the accessory ossicles of the foot and ankle can provide a more accurate diagnostic process.
