RESUMEN

KEY MESSAGE: Here, we provide an updated set of guidelines for naming genes in wheat that has been endorsed by the wheat research community. The last decade has seen a proliferation in genomic resources for wheat, including reference- and pan-genome assemblies with gene annotations, which provide new opportunities to detect, characterise, and describe genes that influence traits of interest. The expansion of genetic information has supported growth of the wheat research community and catalysed strong interest in the genes that control agronomically important traits, such as yield, pathogen resistance, grain quality, and abiotic stress tolerance. To accommodate these developments, we present an updated set of guidelines for gene nomenclature in wheat. These guidelines can be used to describe loci identified based on morphological or phenotypic features or to name genes based on sequence information, such as similarity to genes characterised in other species or the biochemical properties of the encoded protein. The updated guidelines provide a flexible system that is not overly prescriptive but provides structure and a common framework for naming genes in wheat, which may be extended to related cereal species. We propose these guidelines be used henceforth by the wheat research community to facilitate integration of data from independent studies and allow broader and more efficient use of text and data mining approaches, which will ultimately help further accelerate wheat research and breeding.

RESUMEN

The emergence and accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in various aquatic environments have recently raised significant concerns. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as one of the major sources of MPs discharge to the environment, implying a substantial need to improve advanced techniques for more efficient removal of MPs. Polymeric membranes have been proven effective in MPs removal. However, fouling is the main drawback of membrane processes and MPs can foul the membranes due to their small size and specific surface properties. Hence, it is important to investigate the impacts of MPs on membrane fouling to develop efficient membrane-based techniques for MPs removal. Although membrane technologies have a high potential for MPs removal, the interaction of MPs with membranes and their fouling effects have not been critically reviewed. The purpose of this paper is to provide a state-of-the-art review of MPs interaction with membranes and facilitate a better understanding of the relevant limitations and prospects of the membrane technologies. The first section of this paper is dedicated to a review of recent studies on MPs occurrence in WWTPs aiming to determine the most frequent MPs. This is followed by a summary of recent studies on MPs removal using membranes and discussions on the impact of MPs on membrane fouling and other probable issues (abrasion, concentration polarisation, biofouling, etc.). Finally, some recommendations for further research in this area are highlighted. This study serves as a valuable reference for future research on the development of anti-fouling membranes considering these new emerging contaminates.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to reveal the possible effect of sulforaphane on oxidative stress and inflammation in rats liver with toxic hepatitis induced by acetaminophene. BACKGROUND: Sulforaphane is a compound with high antioxidant properties. Acetaminophen, which is a para-aminophenol derivative, can lead to fatal hepatic necrosis with direct hepatotoxic effects at high doses. METHODS: Thirty six male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups. Control group (n = 9) was fed with standard rat chow and water for 3 days. Group APAP (n = 9) received a single dose acetaminophen 1 g/kg by oral gavage in addition to standard chow and water. Group SFN (n = 9) received sulforaphane 500 µg/kg by oral gavage in addition to standard chow and water for 3 days. Group APAP+SFN (n = 9) received sulforaphane 500 µg/kg and a single dose acetaminophen 1 g/kg by oral gavage in addition to standard chow and water. Acetaminophen was administered three hours after SFN administration. RESULTS: Neopterin, MDA, AST, ALT and CRP levels of group APAP were significantly increased compared to control group. GSH level of group APAP was significantly lower than in the control group. CONCLUSION: Sulforaphane is a protective agent against acetaminophen-induced liver damage and it can be added in the treatment protocol (Tab. 1, Fig. 5, Ref. 51).

In this paper we show that the direct application of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle (HUP) leads to the expression of the electron statistics (ES) under extreme degeneracy and intense electric field in bulk, quantum wells, nano wires and in the presence of quantizing magnetic field in III­V, ternary and quaternary materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion laws without using the usual density-of-states (DOS) function approach for finding out the ES under different physical lattice matched to InP conditions. It appears taking HD InSb, InAs, Hg1−xCdxTe, In1−xGaxAsyP1−y as examples that the Fermi energy increases with increasing electron concentration and the surface electric field in all the cases. Besides the Fermi energy decreases with increasing alloy composition and film thickness in different manners which depend totally on the values of the energy band constants. The Fermi energy oscillates with inverse quantizing magnetic field due to SdH effect. We have also shown that under certain limiting conditions all our generalized results lead to the well known formulas as given in the literature.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop an accurate, reliable and easily applicable method for determining the anatomical location of the joint line during revision knee arthroplasty. METHODS: The transepicondylar width (TEW), the perpendicular distance between the medial and lateral epicondyles and the distal articular surfaces (DMAD, DLAD) and the distance between the medial and lateral epicondyles and the posterior articular surfaces (PMAD, DLAD) were measured in 40 knees from 20 formalin-fixed adult cadavers (11 male and nine female; mean age at death 56.9 years, sd 9.4; 34 to 69). The ratios of the DMAD, PMAD, DLAD and PLAD to TEW were calculated. RESULTS: The mean TEW, DMAD, PMAD, DLAD and PLAD were 82.76 mm (standard deviation (sd) 7.74), 28.95 mm (sd 3.3), 28.57 mm (sd 3), 23.97 mm (sd 3.27) and 24.42 mm (sd 3.14), respectively. The ratios between the TEW and the articular distances (DMAD/TEW, DLAD/TEW, PMAD/TEW and PLAD/TEW) were calculated and their means were 0.35 (sd 0.02), 0.34 (sd 0.02), 0.28 (sd 0.03) and 0.29 (sd 0.03), respectively. CONCLUSION: This method provides a simple, reproducible and reliable technique enabling accurate anatomical joint line restoration during revision total knee arthroplasty.Cite this article: B. AIM: Radial artery spasm is common during transradial procedures and is the most common cause of procedural failure. The objectives of this study were to assess whether the routine administration of sedation at the beginning of transradial coronary angiography with the use of hydrophilic-coated and smaller sheaths/catheters would reduce the incidence of radial artery spasm. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing transradial coronary angiography were prospectively randomized to receive midazolam during the procedure or no sedative treatment. The primary endpoint was angiographically confirmed radial artery spasm. Stenosis of the radial artery was measured with a computer-assisted quantification method. RESULTS: In all, 150 patients were randomized into a treatment group and a control group. Spasm occurred in 15 patients of the treatment group (20 %) versus 16 in the control group (21.3 %). There were no differences between the two groups regarding the incidence of spasm and the distribution of spasm severity (p > 0.05). No significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of 30-day mortality or repeat hospitalization for any cause (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Routine use of midazolam could not reduce the occurrence of radial artery spasm during transradial coronary angiography.

AIM: The Ceraflex atrial septal defect occluder is an alternative device to the Amplatzer septal occluder with some structural innovations including flexible connection, increased flexibility, and minimized amount of implant material. We evaluated the efficiency and safety of the Ceraflex septal occluder device in percutaneous closure of secundum atrial septal defects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, nonrandomized, multicenter study of patients undergoing transcatheter closure for an atrial septal defect with the Ceraflex and the Amplatzer septal occluder devices. A clinical evaluation and follow-up transthoracic echocardiography were performed at 1, 6, and 12 months. RESULTS: Between 2010 and 2014, 125 patients underwent atrial septal defect closure with the Ceraflex septal occluder (n = 58) and the Amplatzer septal occluder (n = 67) under transesophageal echocardiography guidance. Patient characteristics, the stretched size of the defect, device size, and fluoroscopy time were similar between the groups. The immediate and follow-up complete occlusion rates for both groups were 100%. There was no device embolization, procedure-related stroke, or pericardial effusion. CONCLUSIONS: The Ceraflex septal occluder is a safe and efficient device for closure of secundum atrial septal defects with no procedural complications. The Ceraflex has similar outcomes when compared with the Amplatzer septal occluder device. The advantage of the Ceraflex septal occluder device is that it can be deployed without the tension of the delivery catheter.

Neuronal cell death contributes significantly to the pathology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) irrespective of the mode or severity of the injury. Activation of a pro-survival protein, Akt, is known to be regulated by an E3 ligase TRAF6 through a process of ubiquitination-coupled phosphorylation at its T308 residue. Here we show that upregulation of a pro-apototic protein, GADD34, attenuates TRAF6-mediated Akt activation in a controlled cortical impact model of TBI in mice. TBI induces the expression of GADD34 by stimulating binding of a stress inducible transcription factor, ATF4, to the GADD34 promoter. GADD34 then binds with TRAF6 and prevents its interaction with Akt. This event leads to retention of Akt in the cytosol and prevents phosphorylation at the T308 position. Finally, in vivo depletion of GADD34 using a lentiviral knockdown approach leads to a rescue of Akt activation and markedly attenuates TBI-induced cell death.

Chronic pain after inguinal hernia repair with prosthetic meshes is recorded in some patients. Although the exact etiology of the pain is not fully understood, it can be related to the trauma to the regional nerves. It is possible to involve these nerves by injuring, suturing, stapling, tacking or compressing them during the operation. Therefore, a delicate surgical approach to the inguinal floor with correct identification of three nerves is necessary for patient comfort at early and late postoperative period. We herein report a surgical view of an inguinal floor which are very rich of neural structures in a patient undergo an elective inguinal hernia repair. The number of the main nerve bundles was excessive, and they were thicker than generally met. This kind of anatomic variations may create a difficulty for repair with prosthetic material. The identification of the nerve structures was hard at first sight and the correct identification was only made by consulting the surgical picture with a senior anatomist.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common operations in a junior surgical resident's postgraduate training. Short recall courses can improve junior residents' anatomy knowledge and results in better surgical outcomes. We aimed to investigate the effect of a short course on anatomical competency during inguinal hernia repairs. METHODS: During the first 25 inguinal hernia repairs, two junior residents were asked to identify iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, and genital branch of genitofemoral nerves. Then, the residents were given a short recall course by anatomists. Afterwards, the participants were taken into an in-vivo anatomy test again. The same parameters were recorded in another 25 inguinal hernia repairs. In addition to the nerve identification records, case characteristics [body mass index (BMI < or = 25 vs. >25), hernia type (indirect vs. direct), and anesthesia used (general or regional vs. local)] were recorded. RESULTS: Anatomy education had a clear impact on the correct identification rates for the iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves. The rates increased from 70% to 90% and above. Correct identification rate for the three nerves together significantly increased from 16 to 52% following anatomy education (P = 0.006). All three nerves were identified with significantly higher success rates after anatomy education. The increase in the success rate for identification of the genital branch of genitofemoral nerve was 4-fold. CONCLUSIONS: Short anatomy courses in specific subjects for junior surgical residents given by formal anatomists may be effective during postgraduate education. The benefit obtained in the present study for the inguinal region nerves may be expanded to more important anatomical structures, such as the recurrent laryngeal nerve in a thyroidectomy, or more complex subjects.

During eye development, apoptosis is vital to the maturation of highly specialized structures such as the lens and retina. Several forms of apoptosis have been described, including anoikis, a form of apoptosis triggered by inadequate or inappropriate cell-matrix contacts. The anoikis regulators, Bit1 (Bcl-2 inhibitor of transcription-1) and protein kinase-D (PKD), are expressed in developing lens when the organelles are present in lens fibers, but are downregulated as active denucleation is initiated. We have previously shown that in rats with a spontaneous mutation in the Cryba1 gene, coding for ßA3/A1-crystallin, normal denucleation of lens fibers is inhibited. In rats with this mutation (Nuc1), both Bit1 and PKD remain abnormally high in lens fiber cells. To determine whether ßA3/A1-crystallin has a role in anoikis, we induced anoikis in vitro and conducted mechanistic studies on astrocytes, cells known to express ßA3/A1-crystallin. The expression pattern of Bit1 in retina correlates temporally with the development of astrocytes. Our data also indicate that loss of ßA3/A1-crystallin in astrocytes results in a failure of Bit1 to be trafficked to the Golgi, thereby suppressing anoikis. This loss of ßA3/A1-crystallin also induces insulin-like growth factor-II, which increases cell survival and growth by modulating the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT/mTOR and extracellular signal-regulated kinase pathways. We propose that ßA3/A1-crystallin is a novel regulator of both life and death decisions in ocular astrocytes.

RESUMEN

A 15-year-old boy presented with priapism of 46 h duration. There was no known cause of priapism detected in him. During evaluation, biopsy of the lymph node and bone marrow aspiration detected patient to be having Niemann-Pick disease. He was managed with cavernous aspiration, saline irrigation, and intracavernosal phenylephrine injection. Although priapism is associated with many known diseases, about half of the cases are of idiopathic origin. We are reporting the first case of priapism associated with Niemann-Pick disease in the literature.

Isolated female epispadias without bladder exstrophy is an extremely rare congenital anomaly. The symptoms of female epispadias are primary urinary incontinence and abnormal anatomical features. A 7-year-old girl presented with partial incontinence of urine. On physical examination, bifid clitoris and labia minora were seen. The vagina and hymen were normal. Voiding cystourethrogram showed no reflux. With the diagnosis of isolated female epispadias, single stage reconstruction of the urethra, labia minora and clitoris was performed.

INTRODUCTION: The arteries of the anterior perforated substance (APS) are important due to their role in supplying blood to important internal structures such as the internal capsule, putamen and caudate nucleus. The purpose of this study was to investigate in detail the arteries of the APS. METHODS: The arteries of the APS were investigated in 60 cerebral hemispheres from 30 adult cadaveric brains. The internal carotid arteries were cannulated and perfused with coloured latex. The branches of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) penetrating the APS were investigated. These arteries, known as the lateral lenticulostriate arteries and originating from the M1 segment, early temporal and early frontal branches of the MCA, were recorded. RESULTS: The branches of the anterior choroidal artery, which reached the APS, were seen in all specimens. We found one to three branches that arose from the A2 segment of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) to the APS in all hemispheres, and one to three branches that originated from the A1 segment of the ACA in 48 hemispheres. In addition, two accessory MCAs that originated from the A2 segment of the ACA were recorded as variations, and perforating branches to the APS were observed. CONCLUSION: Serious complications like motor deficits can occur as a result of injury to the arteries of the APS. Hence, neurosurgeons performing operations such as aneurysm or insular tumour surgeries must be aware of the importance of preserving these arteries.

BACKGROUND: In order to document the understanding of current evidence for the management of triple negative breast cancer and application of this knowledge in daily practice, we conducted an interactive survey of practicing Indian oncologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A core group of academic oncologists devised two hypothetical triple negative cases (metastatic and early breast cancer, respectively) and multiple choice options under different clinical circumstances. The respondents were practicing oncologists in different Indian cities who participated in either an online survey or a meeting. The participants electronically chose their preferred option based on their everyday practice. RESULTS: A total of 152 oncologists participated. Just over half (53.8%) preferred taxane based chemotherapy as first-line chemotherapy in the metastatic setting. In the adjuvant setting, a taxane regimen was chosen by 61%. Over half of respondents (52.6%) underestimated the baseline survival of a patient with node positive triple-negative tumor and 18.9% overestimated this survival compared to the estimate of the Adjuvant! program. DISCUSSION: This data offers insight into the perceptions and practice of a diverse cross-section of practicing oncologists in India with respect to their therapeutic choices in metastatic and adjuvant settings in triple negative breast cancer.
