RESUMEN

Gastrointestinal tract involvement in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is common. A 46-year-old woman with PSS and calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal hypomotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasias with evidence of widespread intestinal tract involvement is described in whom multiple colonic telangiectasias (angiodysplasias) were found on colonoscopy, a finding not previously reported to our knowledge. The telangiectasias represent a potential cause of gastrointestinal tract bleeding.

RESUMEN

The Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is characterized by gastrin-producing tumors, gastric acid hypersecretion, peptic ulcers, and diarrhea. ZES may be associated with nonpancreatic endocrine tumors as part of the multiple endocrine adenomatosis-type 1 syndrome. The diagnosis of ZES can be confirmed in patients with a suggestive clinical picture and excessive gastric acid secretion by the finding of a markedly elevated fasting serum gastrin level or characteristic gastrin response to provocative testing. Standard treatment of ZES has traditionally been surgical. With the introduction of H2-histamine receptor antagonists, however, many patients can now be managed successfully with cimetidine alone, or cimetidine plus vagotomy, when no resectable gastrinoma is present.

RESUMEN

Menetrier's disease is an uncommon lesion which may have malignant potential. This report documents a case of gastric malignancy arising in a patient with long-standing Menetrier's disease and emphasizes that close follow-up of patients with this condition is necessary because of the possible development of gastric malignancy.
