RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The classification of renal tumors is expanding with the addition of new molecular entities in the 5th World Health Organization classification. Apart from this, the major updates in the definition of papillary renal cell carcinoma are that these tumors are no longer subtyped into type 1 and type 2. In oncocytic tumors, the new molecularly defined renal tumors, emerging and novel entities need to be considered in the diagnosis of oncocytic and chromophobe renal tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study to review and reclassify papillary, oncocytic, and chromophobe renal tumors based on the new WHO classification and correlate with clinical data, gross, microscopic features, and immunohistochemistry markers. RESULTS: A total of thirteen cases were reviewed and the tumor grade was changed for three out of four cases of papillary renal cell carcinoma and a single case was recategorized and graded. In nine cases of oncocytic and chromophobe renal tumors, the diagnoses were modified in 3 cases. CONCLUSION: Newly defined molecular renal tumors require advanced immunohistochemistry markers and molecular tests. This poses diagnostic challenges to pathologists practicing in low resource settings where molecular tests are not available.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are more prone to vulvovaginitis which is a great challenge for obstetricians today. In Ayurveda, Upapluta Yonivyapad described by Acharya Charaka, Sharangadhara, and both Vagbhata can be compared to vulvovaginitis during pregnancy. AIMS: The present study aimed to evaluate efficacy of Dhatakyadi Varti in the management of Upapluta Yonivyapad (vulvovaginitis during pregnancy). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 female patients in the age group of 19-40 years were registered and divided into two groups. In Group A (n = 46), Dhatakyadi Varti was inserted intravaginally, and in Group B (n = 34), Clingen vaginal suppository was inserted intravaginally once at bed time for 14 days. The effect of therapy was assessed on the basis of relief in subjective and objective criteria, i.e., vaginal smear test. RESULTS: In subjective parameters, such as Yoni Srava, Yoni Kandu, Yoni Vedana, Yoni Daha and Yoni Daurgandhya, better result was observed in trial Group A receiving Dhatakyadi Varti. Highly significant relief (P < 0.001) was observed in fungal infection, and significant relief (P = 0.005) was observed in Gram - negative bacterial infection and pus cells in Group A. In Group A, 34.88% patients had complete remission, marked improvement was found in 34.88% cases, and only 2.32% patients remained unchanged, while in Group B, 33.33% patients reported complete remission, marked improvement was found in 10% cases, and 20% patients remained unchanged. CONCLUSION: It was concluded from the clinical trial that Dhatakyadi Varti is highly effective in reducing subjective and objective variables of Upapluta Yonivyapad and can be introduced as a safe herbal therapy of vaginal discharge during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Glycowithanolides (Withaferin A), is one of the main withanolides active principle isolated from plant Withania somnifera and is claimed that it possess the aphrodisiac, sedative, rejuvenate and life prolonging properties. OBJECTIVE: In the present investigation, antioxidant activity of active principles of Withania somnifera was tested against D-galactose induced oxidative stress in mouse testes, epididymis and seminal vesicle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the present investigation Swiss male albino mice Mus musculus (Linn) were used. They were grouped in to control (I), D-galactose treated (II), protective (III) and curative groups (IV). Oxidative stress was induced in six month old mice by injecting a low dose of D-galactose. Antioxidant effect of plant extract was studied in testes, epididymis, and seminal vesicle of oxidative stressed mice on Lipid peroxidation (LPO) and fluorescence product. RESULTS: In the present study, both total as well as mitochondrial lipid peroxidation and fluorescence product in testes, epididymis and seminal vesicle were increased in D-galactose induced mice. After the treatment of glycowithanolides there was significantly decrease in total as well as mitochondrial lipid peroxidation and fluorescence product in protective and curative groups. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that Withania somnifera has a capability of preventing oxidative stress and also combating stress induced infertility.
