RESUMEN

Background This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to assess the level of knowledge on dietary management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients undergoing hemodialysis in a tertiary care hospital in Puducherry, South India. Methodology The study was conducted among 86 inpatients diagnosed with CKD and undergoing hemodialysis in the dialysis unit. They were selected by simple random sampling. The self-administered, validated, self-structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. The study was conducted from May to September 2019. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (chi-square) were used to find out the relationship between the level of knowledge and background variables using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0 (Released 2017; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). Results The findings indicated that the majority of patients were in the 20-30 age range (36, 41.9%), male (58, 67.4%), from nuclear families (58, 66.3%), with mixed dietary habits (60, 69.8%), and undergoing thrice-weekly hemodialysis (34, 53.5%). Additionally, 59 (68.6%) were hypertensive and 14 (16.3%) were diabetic. Most patients exhibited a moderate level of knowledge (74, 86%), while a small percentage had inadequate (6, 7%) and adequate (6, 7%) knowledge, with a mean (SD) value of 2.00 (0.376). The study identified statistically significant associations between knowledge levels and age, occupation, food habits, duration of dialysis, pre-existing co-morbid illnesses, and treatment of hemodialysis with a p-value <0.05. Conclusions In conclusion, this study highlights that the majority of the CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis exhibit moderately adequate knowledge of dietary management. However, a notable need remains for further education and support in this area. Addressing these knowledge gaps is crucial, as it can empower nursing students and healthcare professionals to educate these patients on their dietary needs effectively. By providing comprehensive education and support, we can enhance the quality of care and improve outcomes for hemodialysis patients.

Background This study aimed to assess the readiness toward flipped learning (FL) among novice nursing students in fundamental nursing care in Puducherry, South India.  Methodology A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 176 first-year B.Sc. Nursing students from three private nursing colleges by purposive sampling technique. In theory and practical classes, the students were taught fundamental nursing procedures such as oral medication, intramuscular injection, peripheral intravenous cannulation, and nasogastric tube feeding as FL. The study was conducted from November 2021 to March 2022. The responses were collected using the Nursing Students' Readiness for Flipped Classroom (NSR-FC) scale with four domains such as personal, technological, environmental, and pedagogical readiness. Pearson correlation and chi-square tests were used to analyze data by incorporating IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results Among 176 nursing students, 73.9% were aged between 17 and 19 years, the majority (76.7%) were females, and 98% of them used mobile phones to access online FL content. Of the novice nursing students, 69.88% agreed, 27.84% strongly agreed, and 2.27% were in a neutral state for readiness to adopt FL in their nursing curriculum with a mean (standard deviation, SD) value of 77.02 (6.27). Among the four domains of readiness, a positive correlation was found between personal with technological readiness (P = 0.001; r = 0.446) and pedagogical with personal readiness (P = 0.003; r = 0.223). Statistically, a significant association was found between students' readiness toward FL with the occupation of the head of the family, gadgets used to access the FL materials, and Wi-Fi/internet availability in the institutions with a P-value <0.05. Conclusions The study showed highly positive readiness for FL among nursing students in nursing subjects. It can be leveraged with educational institutions' environmental and technological support by properly utilizing mobile devices, computer laboratories, and access to the internet/Wi-Fi for students from their entry level to enhance FL.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phones have become a widely accepted learning mode due to the impact of COVID-19. This study explores the mobile technology acceptance, among nursing students at selected educational institutions in South India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative cross-sectional descriptive design. First-year 176 B.Sc. nursing students who underwent blended learning were selected by the purposive sampling method. The tool "Technology Acceptance Model" was used to collect responses. Bivariate analysis was used to determine the relationship between the demographic and study-related variables with the mobile technology acceptance using SPSS version 25.0. RESULTS: The majority 73.9% of the students belonged to the age group of 18-19 years, females 76.7% and, 98.9% were unmarried. Among the constructs of TAM, a mean (SD) value of 22.08 (2.26) was found for material (mobile device audio/video) characteristics the mean (SD) value was 22.08 (2.26), attitude about use 17.58 (1.95), behavioral intention 17.46 (1.78) and system characteristics 17.21 (2.27). The mobile technology acceptance revealed that 126 (71.6%) strongly agreed, 49 (27.8%) agreed, and 1 (0.6%) was neutral with a mean (SD) of 105.19 (8.68), respectively. A positive correlation was found between the system characteristics, material characteristics, perceived ease to use, perceived usefulness, attitude about the use, behavioral intention with a P value <0.001. There was a statistically significant association between Mobile technology acceptance and time spent by the students for independent studies shown the Chi-square value of 12.7, with P value <0.05. CONCLUSION: Nursing students had a positive acceptance and behavior toward smartphone use.
