RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study presents the successful management of a patient with chronic chemical-based injury using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelation. METHODS: This is a case report of a 59-year-old man who presented to us 2 months after a bilateral, accidental, ocular injury with lime particles at his workplace. RESULTS: The patient was initially managed with extensive debridement and amniotic membrane grafting for both eyes. At 4-month follow-up, the left eye appeared to have extensive calcium-based plaques. 0.02N EDTA chelation was performed for his left eye. Postchelation, the visual acuity improved to 20/800. At 1-week follow-up, a repeat EDTA chelation was performed. The corneal clarity improved further, and the patient recovered a visual acuity of 20/200. CONCLUSIONS: EDTA chelation in the setting of calcium deposition in the chronic phase of chemical injuries can be reasonably effective.

By neutron spin echo (NSE) and pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR, we study the dynamics of a polyethylene-oxide melt (PEO) with a molecular weight in the transition regime between Rouse and reptation dynamics. We analyze the data with a Rouse mode analysis allowing for reduced long wavelength Rouse modes amplitudes. For short times, subdiffusive center-of-mass mean square displacement ⟨rcom2(t)⟩ was allowed. This approach captures the NSE data well and provides accurate information on the topological constraints in a chain length regime, where the tube model is inapplicable. As predicted by reptation for the polymer ⟨rcom2(t)⟩, we experimentally found the subdiffusive regime with an exponent close to µ=12, which, however, crosses over to Fickian diffusion not at the Rouse time, but at a later time, when the ⟨rcom2(t)⟩ has covered a distance related to the tube diameter.

BACKGROUND: Medical consultations are often critical meetings between patients and health personnel to provide treatment, health-management advice, and exchange of information, especially for people living with chronic diseases. The adoption of patient-operated Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) allows the patients to actively participate in their consultation and treatment. The consultation can be divided into three different phases: before, during, and after the meeting. The difference is identified by the activities in preparation (before), the meeting, conducted either physically or in other forms of non-face-to-face interaction (during), and the follow-up activities after the meeting (after). Consultations can be supported by various ICT-based interventions, often referred to as eHealth, mHealth, telehealth, or telemedicine. Nevertheless, the use of ICTs in healthcare settings is often accompanied by security and privacy challenges due to the sensitive nature of health information and the regulatory requirements associated with storing and processing sensitive information. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to map the existing knowledge and identify gaps in research about ICT-based interventions for chronic diseases consultations. The review objective is guided by three research questions: (1) which ICTs are used by people with chronic diseases, health personnel, and others before, during, and after consultations; (2) which type of information is managed by these ICTs; and (3) how are security and privacy issues addressed? METHODS: We performed a literature search in ACM, IEEE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science and included primary studies published between January 2015 and June 2020 that used ICT before, during, and/or after a consultation for chronic diseases. This review presents and discusses the findings from the included publications structured around the three research questions. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies met the inclusion criteria. Only five studies reported the use of ICTs in all three phases: before, during, and after consultations. The main ICTs identified were smartphone applications, web-based portals, cloud-based infrastructures, and electronic health record systems. Different devices like sensors and wearable devices were used in 23 studies to gather diverse information. Regarding the type of information managed by these ICTs, we identified nine categories: physiological data, treatment information, medical history, consultation media like images or videos, laboratory results, reminders, lifestyle parameters, symptoms, and patient identification. Security issues were addressed in 20 studies, while only eight of the included studies addressed privacy issues. CONCLUSIONS: This scoping review highlights the potential for a new model of consultation for patients with chronic diseases. Furthermore, it emphasizes the possibilities for consultations besides physical and remote meetings. The scoping review also revealed a narrow focus on security and privacy. Security issues were more likely to be mentioned in the included publications, although with limited details. Future research should focus more on security and privacy due to the increasing amount of sensitive information gathered and used for consultations.

We study the dynamics of pure oleic acid and grafted oleic acid synthesized by decomposing iron oleate into oleic acid grafted iron oxide nanoparticles. Our quasielastic neutron scattering study shows that oleic acid dominantly performs translational diffusion at room temperature. On the other hand, in nanocomposites, constraints imposed by grafting and crowding of neighboring chains restrict the grafted oleic acid to uniaxial rotation. Interestingly, it also manifests mobility in grafted oleic acid below the crystallization temperature of pure oleic acid. The data from grafted oleic acid could be effectively described using a uniaxial rotational diffusion model with an additional elastic scattering contribution. This kind of elastic scattering arises due to the restricted bond mobility and increases with decreasing temperature. The radius of rotation obtained from the fitted data agrees very well with the geometry of the molecule and grafting density. These results open possibilities of research on the confined surfactant systems, which could be analyzed using the approach described here.

RESUMEN

ProteoVision is a web server designed to explore protein structure and evolution through simultaneous visualization of multiple sequence alignments, topology diagrams and 3D structures. Starting with a multiple sequence alignment, ProteoVision computes conservation scores and a variety of physicochemical properties and simultaneously maps and visualizes alignments and other data on multiple levels of representation. The web server calculates and displays frequencies of amino acids. ProteoVision is optimized for ribosomal proteins but is applicable to analysis of any protein. ProteoVision handles internally generated and user uploaded alignments and connects them with a selected structure, found in the PDB or uploaded by the user. It can generate de novo topology diagrams from three-dimensional structures. All displayed data is interactive and can be saved in various formats as publication quality images or external datasets or PyMol Scripts. ProteoVision enables detailed study of protein fragments defined by Evolutionary Classification of protein Domains (ECOD) classification. ProteoVision is available at http://proteovision.chemistry.gatech.edu/.

Sugarcane bagasse (SB) and sugarcane trash (SCT) containing 30% hemicellulose content are the waste from the sugarcane industry. Hemicellulose being heterogeneous, more complex, and less abundant than cellulose remains less explored. The optimized conditions for the pretreatment of SB and SCT for maximizing the delignification are soaking in aqueous ammonia (SAA), 18.5 wt %, followed by heating at 70 °C for 14 h. The optimization of hydrolysis of SAA pretreated (ptd) SB and SCT by the Box-Behnken design in the first step of saccharification by xylanase (CtXyn11A) and α-l-arabinofuranosidase (PsGH43_12) resulted in the total reducing sugar (TRS) yield of xylooligosaccharides (TRS(XOS)) of 93.2 mg/g ptd SB and 85.1 mg/g ptd SCT, respectively. The second step of saccharification by xylosidase (BoGH43) gave the TRS yield of 164.7 mg/g ptd SB and 147.2 mg/g ptd SCT. The high-performance liquid chromatography analysis of hydrolysate obtained after the second step of saccharification showed 69.6% xylan-to-xylose conversion for SB and 64.1% for SCT. This study demonstrated the optimization of the pretreatment method and of the enzymatic saccharification by recombinant xylanolytic enzymes, resulting in the efficient saccharification of ptd hemicellulose to TRS by giving 73.5% conversion for SB and 71.1% for SCT. These optimized conditions for the pretreatment and saccharification of sugarcane waste can also be used at a large scale.

Researchers and researched populations are actively involved in participatory epidemiology. Such studies collect many details about an individual. Recent developments in statistical inferences can lead to sensitive information leaks from seemingly insensitive data about individuals. Typical safeguarding mechanisms are vetted by ethics committees; however, the attack models are constantly evolving. Newly discovered threats, change in applicable laws or an individual's perception can raise concerns that affect the study. Addressing these concerns is imperative to maintain trust with the researched population. We are implementing Lohpi: an infrastructure for building accountability in data processing for participatory epidemiology. We address the challenge of data-ownership by allowing institutions to host data on their managed servers while being part of Lohpi. We update data access policies using gossips. We present Lohpi as a novel architecture for research data processing and evaluate the dissemination, overhead, and fault-tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Complying with individual privacy perceptions is essential when processing personal information for research. Our specific research area is performance development of elite athletes, wherein nutritional aspects are important. Before adopting new automated tools that capture such data, it is crucial to understand and address the privacy concerns of the research subjects that are to be studied. Privacy as contextual integrity emphasizes understanding contextual sensitivity in an information flow. In this study, we explore privacy perceptions in image-based dietary assessments. This research field lacks empirical evidence on what will be considered as privacy violations when exploring trends in long-running studies. Prior studies have only classified images as either private or public depending on their basic content. An assessment and analysis are thus needed to prevent unwanted consequences of privacy breach and other issues perceived as sensitive when designing systems for dietary assessment by using food images. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate common perceptions of computer systems using food images for dietary assessment. The study delves into perceived risks and data-sharing behaviors. METHODS: We investigated the privacy perceptions of 105 individuals by using a web-based survey. We analyzed these perceptions along with perceived risks in sharing dietary information with third parties. RESULTS: We found that understanding the motive behind the use of data increases its chances of sharing with a social group. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we highlight various privacy concerns that can be addressed during the design phase. A system design that is compliant with general data protection regulations will increase participants' and stakeholders' trust in an image-based dietary assessment system. Innovative solutions are needed to reduce the intrusiveness of a continuous assessment. Individuals show varying behaviors for sharing metadata, as knowing what the data is being used for, increases the chance of it being shared.

INTRODUCTION: The interocclusal registration materials record the occlusal relationship between the natural and /or artificial teeth for planning an occlusal rehabilitation in removable and fixed partial dentures. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate and compare the accuracy and the three dimensional stability offered by three different types of interocclusal recording materials at storage time intervals of 1 hour and 24 hours. METHODS: Three commercially available interocclusal recording materials were used: Group I-Polyether bite registration paste (Ramitec), Group II-Polyvinylsiloxane bite registration material (Imprint), Group III-Bite registration wax (Maarc). The test was carried out using an epoxy resin model. A total of 30 samples were made with each group consisting of ten samples. Three dimensional measurements were carried out by using 3D-Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) at time intervals of 0-1 hour and 0-24 hours in X, Y and Z-axis. RESULTS: Twelve readings were obtained for three axes (4 readings for each sample at 1 axis) and the averages of these four values were noted for a particular axis (X/Y/Z). Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for comparison among the groups and then Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) tests was performed for comparison among groups at the 0.05 level of significance. CONCLUSION: Polyvinylsiloxane was dimensionally the most stable material followed by polyether and finally bite registration wax. Dimensional accuracy and stability is influenced by both "material" and "time" factors.

AIM: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of ultraviolet irradiation on the bond strength of composite veneer adhered to the SSCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy anterior typhodont teeth (API, New Delhi, India) were randomly divided into two groups (N = 35/group) to be crowned with 70 maxillary left central incisor SSCs, size no. 3 (3MESPE, St. Paul, USA). The crowns were adjusted and cemented with the glass ionomer cement (type I, Ivoclar Vivadent, New York, USA). The labial surfaces of the experimental group were exposed to UV irradiation for 80 minutes using the UV chamber (Easy UV Chamber, India) with 2 UV lamps that produced 30 W of power to induce photoactivation. Standardized composite blocks (Ivoclar Vivadent, Gurgaon, India) of 4 × 4 × 1 mm were fabricated using Teflon molds and light cured for 60 seconds. The samples were fixed in the acrylic resin (NicTone62),with a label bearing the number of each sample. The samples were stored in a dry medium for 24 hours and tested using a universal testing machine. RESULTS: The mean shear bond strength in the non-UV group was 26.03 ± 9.42 MPa, while in the UV group, it was 35.10 ± 14.80 MPa. Thus, there was a statistically significant difference in the mean value of the shear bond strength between the non-UV and UV groups. The shear bond strength in the UV group is much higher as compared with the non-UV group. CONCLUSION: Based on this study's results, the following conclusion can be made: ultraviolet irradiation of pediatric stainless steel crowns was found to significantly increase the shear bond strength of composite resin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: UV irradiation could provide suitable adhesion of composite resins to stainless SSCs, leading to in-office veneering of SSCs. Systematic reviews underpin Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) by addressing precise clinical questions via comprehensive synthesis of all relevant published evidence. Authors of systematic reviews typically define a Population/Problem, Intervention, Comparator, and Outcome (a PICO criteria) of interest, and then retrieve, appraise and synthesize results from all reports of clinical trials that meet these criteria. Identifying PICO elements in the full-texts of trial reports is thus a critical yet time-consuming step in the systematic review process. We seek to expedite evidence synthesis by developing machine learning models to automatically extract sentences from articles relevant to PICO elements. Collecting a large corpus of training data for this task would be prohibitively expensive. Therefore, we derive distant supervision (DS) with which to train models using previously conducted reviews. DS entails heuristically deriving 'soft' labels from an available structured resource. However, we have access only to unstructured, free-text summaries of PICO elements for corresponding articles; we must derive from these the desired sentence-level annotations. To this end, we propose a novel method - supervised distant supervision (SDS) - that uses a small amount of direct supervision to better exploit a large corpus of distantly labeled instances by learning to pseudo-annotate articles using the available DS. We show that this approach tends to outperform existing methods with respect to automated PICO extraction.

PURPOSE: To study whether breastfeeding and breastfeeding status during gluten introduction influences the age at diagnosis of celiac disease (CD). In addition to study, whether the timing of gluten introduction influences the age at diagnosis of CD. METHODS: It was a hospital based observational study. Total 198 patients diagnosed with CD as per modified European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2012) criteria, aged between 6 months to 6 years were included. Detail history taken with special emphasis on breastfeeding and age of gluten introduction. Standard statistical methods used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Mean±standard deviation age of onset and diagnosis of CD in breastfed cases was 2.81±1.42 years and 3.68 ±1.55 years respectively as compared to 1.84±1.36 years and 2.70±1.65 years respectively in not breastfed cases (p<0.05). Those who had continued breastfeeding during gluten introduction and of longer duration had significantly delayed onset of disease. The age at onset of CD was under one year in 40.42% of the cases, who had started gluten before 6 months of age compared to only 12.58% of those who had started gluten later (p<0.001). The proposed statistical model showed that two variables, i.e., breast feeding status during gluten introduction and age at gluten introduction positively influencing the age at diagnosis of CD. CONCLUSION: Delayed gluten introduction to infant's diet along with continuing breastfeeding, delays symptomatic CD. However, it is not clear from our study that these infant feeding practices provide permanent protection against the disease or merely delays the symptoms.
