RESUMEN

Although the adoption rate among same-sex couples has been increasing, limited research has focused on factors influencing decision making related to placing children with such couples, particularly from the standpoint of birth mothers. Additionally, there is a gap in the literature regarding how biases may influence birth mothers' decision to place their child with a same-sex couple. This study sought to examine the association between birth mothers' racial ideologies and their decision to voluntarily place their children with same-sex couples (n = 29) or mother-father couples (n = 354) during the adoption process. Results indicated that birth mothers with stronger color evasive racial attitudes were significantly less likely to place their children with same-sex couples. The need for additional research about the intersections among various forms of bias in the adoption process and the effect of potential interactions between homophobia and racism are discussed. Suggestions for professionals wishing to minimize homophobic and racist bias are provided.

Using a sample of linked adopted children, adoptive and birth parents (N = 561), and biological siblings residing in the birth parent home (N = 191), we examined the role of genetics within family stress processes. We tested parental hostility (7 years) as a mediator of the associations between socioeconomic strain and rearing parent psychopathology (4 years) and adolescent externalizing behaviors (11 years) in adoptive and biological parent homes. Next, we examined parent social support (4 years) as a moderator of paths from socioeconomic strain and parent psychopathology to parental hostility. Parental hostility significantly mediated effects of socioeconomic strain and parent psychopathology on adolescent externalizing behaviors in biological and adoptive parent homes, respectively. Equivalence testing of the paths to adolescent externalizing behaviors across family types indicated a negligible role of passive gene-environment correlation. Parent social support significantly attenuated the effect of parent psychopathology on parental hostility in biological families. Birth parent externalizing behaviors were not significantly associated with adoptee externalizing behaviors nor adoptive parent hostility, suggesting negligible heritable risk or evocative gene-environment processes. Full- and half-sibling correlations indicated that children's unique rearing contexts contributed to the parenting they received and the externalizing behavior they exhibited. Implications for intervention are discussed.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) among pregnant people has increased dramatically during the opioid epidemic, affecting a significant number of families with young children. Parents with OUD commonly face significant challenges as they are often balancing the stress of caring for young children with maintaining recovery and co-occurring psychosocial challenges (e.g., mental health, low social support). Toward designing interventions to address parenting needs among parents with OUD, we conducted a mixed-methods study to understand the acceptability of receiving parenting support prenatally among pregnant people with OUD residing in the United States. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 18 pregnant and early postpartum people recruited from a substance use treatment program specializing in the care of pregnant and parenting populations. Among all participants, a prenatal parenting program that comprehensively addresses recovery, parenting, and wellbeing was found to be widely acceptable. Regarding content most desirable within a parenting intervention, participants indicated an interest in breastfeeding, caring for newborns with in-utero opioid exposure, parent-infant bonding, infant soothing techniques, their own wellbeing/mental health, and parenting skills. We introduce a prenatal adaptation of the well-established Family Check-up parenting intervention as a novel, prenatal intervention to prevent negative outcomes for caregivers in recovery and their children.


El trastorno de uso de Opioides (OUD) entre personas embarazadas ha aumentado dramáticamente durante la epidemia de opioides, lo cual afecta a un número significativo de familias con niños pequeños. Los progenitores con OUD comúnmente enfrentan retos significativos ya que ellos a menudo buscan equilibrar el estrés de cuidar a niños pequeños con mantener la recuperación y retos sicosociales concurrentes (v.g. salud mental, bajo apoyo social). Con miras al diseño de intervenciones que se ocupen de las necesidades de crianza entre progenitores con OUD, llevamos a cabo un estudio con métodos combinados para comprender el nivel de aceptación de recibir apoyo de crianza prenatalmente entre personas embarazadas con OUD residentes en Estados Unidos. Se llevaron a cabo entrevistas semiestructuradas con 18 personas embarazadas y en el estado temprano del postparto reclutadas de un programa de tratamiento por uso de sustancias que se especializa en el cuidado de grupos de población en estado de embarazo y de crianza. Entre todos los participantes, se notó la amplia aceptación de un programa prenatal de crianza que de manera comprensiva se ocupa de la recuperación. Con respecto al contenido más adecuado dentro de una intervención de crianza, los participantes indicaron su interés en amamantar, cuidar de los recién nacidos expuestos a opioides en el útero, la unión afectiva entre progenitor e infante, técnicas para calmar al infante, su propio bienestar/salud mental, así como las habilidades de crianza. Introdujimos una adaptación prenatal de la bien establecida intervención de crianza Family Check­Up (El Chequeo de Familia) como una novedosa intervención prenatal para prevenir resultados negativos para cuidadores en proceso de recuperación y sus niños.

Previous work has examined the impact of prenatal illicit drug use (PDU) on children's problem behaviors. However, many PDU-related risk factors, including genetic and rearing environmental risks, can also influence offspring's problem behaviors, thus confounding PDU, genetic, and rearing environmental influences. This study aimed to (a) identify effects of PDU on school-aged children's problem behaviors, including both externalizing and internalizing behaviors at Age 7, after controlling genetic and specific rearing environmental (e.g., maternal and paternal hostility at Ages 4.5 and 6) influences and (b) examine interaction effects between PDU and maternal and paternal hostility in predicting children's problem behaviors at Age 7. We used a parent-offspring adoption design to partition genetic and prenatal effects from postnatal rearing environmental influences. Participants were 561 children adopted at birth (42% female; 56% White, 19% multiracial, 13% Black/African American, 11% Latine, and 1% other), their adoptive parents, and their birth parents. Results indicate that PDU did not show a direct impact on Age 7 problem behaviors before or after controlling genetic risks and adoptive mother's and father's hostility. However, we found significant interactions between adoptive father's hostility and PDU when predicting children's problem behaviors, such that higher paternal hostility was associated with higher externalizing and internalizing behaviors for children whose birth mothers were non-use or rare use of illicit drugs during pregnancy. The results suggest that different from non- or rare drug-exposed children, higher levels of PDU may override the effects of paternal hostility, but not maternal hostility, on problem behaviors at Age 7. We present a machine learning (ML) approach to static contact angle measurement, trained on a large data set (>7.2 million) of half drop contours based on solutions to the Young-Laplace equation where the contact angle is known a priori (removing all sources of error from human input). The data set included the effects of surface roughness, gravity, the size of drop relative to the image, and reflections of the drop on the surface. The presented ML model (valid for contact angles >110°), in combination with a new automated image and contour processing approach, is shown to be more accurate than other methods when benchmarked against an experimental data set, with an estimated error of 1°. The ML model is also 2 orders of magnitude faster at predicting contact angles than Young-Laplace fitting (the current best practice approach). The accuracy and speed of the presented approach provides a viable pathway toward robust and reproducible high-throughput contact angle analysis. This approach, Conan-ML, is open-source and provided for the use and development of new approaches to goniometry.

This study examined gene-environment correlation (rGE) in intellectual and academic development in 561 U.S.-based adoptees (57% male; 56% non-Latinx White, 19% multiracial, 13% Black or African American, 11% Latinx) and their birth and adoptive parents between 2003 and 2017. Birth mother intellectual and academic performance predicted adoptive mother warmth at child age 6 (ß = .14, p = .038) and 7 (ß = .12, p = .040) but not 4.5 years, and adoptive father warmth at 7 (ß = .18, p = .007) but not 4.5 or 6 years. These rGE effects were not mediated by children's language. Contrary to theory that rGE accounts for increasing heritability of intellectual ability, parenting did not mediate genetic effects on children's language or academic performance.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated sex differences in longitudinal associations among youth depression, conduct problems, and peer rejection from ages 11 to 16. We hypothesized that girls would follow the irritable depression model, which posits that depression leads to conduct problems, and that peer rejection would mediate this relationship. We hypothesized that boys would follow the cumulative failure model, which suggests that conduct problems predict future depression, mediated by peer rejection. METHOD: We used integrative data analysis to combine three datasets, creating an aggregate sample of 2,322 adolescents, 58.4% of an ethnic minority group, and 51.3% boys. Using random-intercept cross-lagged panel modeling with data from ages 11-16, we conducted a nested model comparison. RESULTS: Results indicated that a model which allowed paths to differ by sex demonstrated better model fit than a constrained model. While depression, conduct problems, and peer rejection were relatively stable over time and had correlated random intercepts, there were few crossover paths between these domains for either sex. When the strengths of individual crossover pathways were compared based on sex, only the path from conduct problems at age 13 to depression at age 14 was significantly different, with this path being stronger for girls. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that stable, between-person effects largely drive relationships between depression, conduct problems, and peer rejection during adolescence, whereas there are few transactional, within-person pathways between these domains. This pattern of findings demonstrates the utility of random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling for disentangling between- and within-person effects.

A recent American Psychological Association Summit provided an urgent call to transform psychological science and practice away from a solely individual-level focus to become accountable for population-level impact on health and mental health. A population focus ensures the mental health of all children, adolescents, and adults and the elimination of inequities across groups. Science must guide three components of this transformation. First, effective individual-level interventions must be scaled up to the population level using principles from implementation science, investing in novel intervention delivery systems (e.g., online, mobile application, text, interactive voice response, and machine learning-based), harnessing the strength of diverse providers, and forging culturally informed adaptations. Second, policy-driven community-level interventions must be innovated and tested, such as public efforts to promote physical activity, public policies to support families in early life, and regulation of corporal punishment in schools. Third, transformation is needed to create a new system of universal primary care for mental health, based on models such as Family Connects, Triple P, PROmoting School-community-university Partnerships to Enhance Resilience, Communities That Care, and the Early Childhood Collaborative of the Pittsburgh Study. This new system must incorporate valid measurement, universal screening, and a community-based infrastructure for service delivery. Addressing tasks ahead, including scientific creativity and discovery, rigorous evaluation, and community accountability, will lead to a comprehensive strategic plan to shape the emergent field of public mental health. Introduction: Children and adolescents with elevated internalizing symptoms are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, and other psychopathology later in life. The present study examined the predictive links between two bioecological factors in early childhood-parental hostility and socioeconomic stress-and children's internalizing symptom class outcomes, while considering the effects of child sex assigned at birth on internalizing symptom development from childhood to adolescence. Materials and Methods: The study used a sample of 1,534 children to test the predictive effects of socioeconomic stress at ages 18 and 27 months; hostile parenting measured at child ages 4-5; and sex assigned at birth on children's internalizing symptom latent class outcomes at child ages 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-19. Analyses also tested the mediating effect of parenting on the relationship between socioeconomic stress and children's symptom classes. Other covariates included parent depressive symptoms at child ages 4-5 and child race and ethnicity. Results: Analyses identified three distinct heterogenous internalizing symptom classes characterized by relative symptom levels and progression: low (35%); moderate and increasing (41%); and higher and increasing (24%). As anticipated, higher levels of parental hostility in early childhood predicted membership in the higher and increasing symptom class, compared with the low symptom class (odds ratio (OR) = .61, 95% confidence interval (CI) [.48,.77]). Higher levels of early childhood socioeconomic stress were also associated with the likelihood of belonging to the higher-increasing symptom class compared to the low and moderate-increasing classes (OR = .46, 95% CI [.35,.60] and OR = .56, 95% CI [.44,.72], respectively). The total (c = .61) and direct (c' = .57) effects of socioeconomic stress on children's symptom class membership in the mediation analysis were significant (p <.001). Discussion: Study findings suggest that intervening on modifiable bioecological stressors-including parenting behaviors and socioeconomic stressors-may provide important protective influences on children's internalizing symptom trajectories.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to examine plurisexual identity, intimate partner violence (IPV), reproductive coercion, and parental monitoring among pregnant 13-21-year-olds. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data collected from a cohort of pregnant adolescents and young adults between October 2019 and May 2023 (n = 398). Logistic regression was completed to assess IPV and reproductive coercion as a function of plurisexual identity. Next, we assessed potential interactions between parental monitoring and plurisexual identity and examined IPV and reproductive coercion as a function of parental monitoring for the full sample and stratified by plurisexuality. Results: Plurisexual identity was associated with IPV (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.3; confidence interval [CI]: 1.4-4.0). IPV was inversely related to parental monitoring among plurisexual participants (aOR: 0.51; CI: 0.32-0.82), but this association was not significant for heterosexual participants (aOR: 1.1; CI: 0.75-1.6). Conclusions: This work demonstrates the importance of parental monitoring in supporting young plurisexual pregnant people.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Manually sculpting a wax pattern of a facial prosthesis is a time-, skill-, and resource-intensive process. Computer-aided design (CAD) methods have been proposed as a substitute for manual sculpting, but these techniques can still require high technical or artistic abilities. Three-dimensional morphable models (3DMMs) could semi-automate facial prosthesis CAD. Systematic comparisons of different design approaches are needed. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the trueness and repeatability of replacing facial features with 3 methods of facial prosthesis design involving 3DMM, traditional CAD, and conventional manual sculpting techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen participants without facial defects were scanned with a structured light scanner. The facial meshes were manipulated to generate artificial orbital, nasal, or combined defects. Three methods of facial prosthesis design were compared for the 15 participants and repeated to produce 5 of each design for 2 participants. For the 3DMM approach, the Leeds face model informed the designs in a statistically meaningful way. For the traditional CAD methods, designs were created by using mirroring techniques or from a nose model database. For the conventional manual sculpting techniques, wax patterns were manually created on 3D printed full face baseplates. For analysis, the unedited facial feature was the standard. The unsigned distance was calculated from each of the several thousand vertices on the unedited facial feature to the closest point on the external surface of the prosthesis prototype. The mean absolute error was calculated, and a Friedman test was performed (α=.05). RESULTS: The median mean absolute error was 1.13 mm for the 3DMM group, 1.54 mm for the traditional CAD group, and 1.49 mm for the manual sculpting group, with no statistically significant differences among groups (P=.549). Boxplots showed substantial differences in the distribution of mean absolute error among groups, with the 3DMM group showing the greatest consistency. The 3DMM approach produced repeat designs with the lowest coefficient of variation. CONCLUSIONS: The 3DMM approach shows potential as a semi-automated method of CAD. Further clinical research is planned to explore the 3DMM approach in a feasibility trial.

One long-standing analytic approach in adoption studies is to examine correlations between features of adoptive homes and outcomes of adopted children (hereafter termed 'measured environment correlations') to illuminate environmental influences on those associations. Although results from such studies have almost uniformly suggested modest environmental influences on adopted children's academic achievement, other work has indicated that adopted children's achievement is routinely higher than that of their reared-apart family members, often substantially so. We sought to understand this discrepancy. We examined academic achievement and literacy-promotive features of the home in 424 yoked adoptive/biological families participating in the Early Growth and Development Study (EGDS; i.e., adopted children, adoptive mothers, birth mothers, and biological siblings of the adopted children remaining in the birth homes) using an exhaustive modeling approach. Results indicated that, as anticipated, adopted children scored up to a full standard deviation higher on standardized achievement tests relative to their birth mothers and reared-apart biological siblings. Moreover, these achievement differences were associated with differences in the literacy-promotive features of the adoptive and birth family homes, despite minimal measured environment correlations within adoptive families. A subsequent simulation study highlighted noise in measured environmental variables as an explanation for the decreased utility of measured environment correlations. We conclude that the field's heavy focus on measured environment correlations within adoptive families may have obscured detection of specific environmental effects on youth outcomes, and that future adoption studies should supplement their measured environment analyses with mean differences between reared-apart relatives.

Objectives: Clinical productivity is an important operational and educational metric for emergency medicine (EM) residents. It is unclear whether working consecutive days and circadian disruption impact resident productivity. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between consecutive shifts and productivity. Methods: This was a single-site retrospective observational study using data from academic year 2021-2022 (July 1, 2021-June 23, 2022). Productivity was defined as primary resident encounters with patients per hour (PPH). Postgraduate year (PGY)-1 and PGY-2 productivity data and schedules were abstracted from the electronic medical record and scheduling software. Descriptive statistics, including arithmetic mean, standard deviation, and confidence interval (CI), were determined for each shift number and stratified by PGY level. Subgroup analysis of night shifts was performed. Analysis of variance and linear regression analysis were performed. Results: A total of 2950 shifts were identified, including 1328 PGY-1 shifts and 1622 PGY-2 shifts, which involved a total of 32,379 patient encounters. PGY-1 residents saw a mean of 0.88-0.96 PPH on sequential shifts 1-7, respectively (y-intercept 0.923, slope 0.001, 95% CI -0.008 to 0.009, p = 0.86). PGY-2 residents saw a mean of 1.61-1.75 PPH on Shifts 1-7, respectively (y-intercept 1.628, slope 0.004, 95% CI -0.007 to 0.015, p = 0.50). A subgroup analysis of 598 overnight shifts (11 p.m.-7 a.m.) was performed, in which residents saw a mean of 1.29-1.56 PPH on Sequential Shifts 1-7 (y-intercept 1.286, slope 0.011, 95% CI -0.011 to 0.033, p = 0.34). Conclusions: EM resident productivity remained relatively constant across consecutive shifts, including night shifts. These findings may have educational and operational implications. Further research is required to understand patient- and provider-oriented consequences of consecutive shift scheduling.

Activation parenting includes behaviors that challenge children to approach novel situations, explore their environments, and take physical and socioemotional risks through a balance of encouragement and limit-setting. Although components of activation parenting have been linked to lower levels of children's problem behaviors, comprehensive measures of activation parenting and longitudinal research on families from low socioeconomic backgrounds are lacking. The goal of the present study was to test associations between paternal activation parenting at age 3 and children's externalizing and internalizing problems at age 5 in a sample of low-income, ethnically diverse fathers. Participating fathers (N = 171; 9% Black, 47% white, 8% Latinx; mean household income = $25,145) and their children (51% female) were drawn from the Early Steps Multisite Study. Activation parenting during a teaching task at child age 3 was associated with lower levels of internalizing problems at age 5 and decreases in externalizing problems from baseline (age 2). Implications of the current findings are presented for future research on associations between activation parenting and child problem behaviors, including the potential for the development of prevention and intervention programs.

The manuscript by Wang et al. contributes mightily to our limited understanding of grandparental care and children's mental health problems. As the authors document, despite the growing number of families worldwide where grandparents serve as the sole primary caregivers or reside with the children's parents to share caregiving responsibilities, and the growing number of studies examining associations between grandparental care and children's mental health-related outcomes, systematic reviews and meta-analyses integrating this literature are missing. There are meta-analyses on relations between grandparental care and such child outcomes as physical health, nutrition and obesity, education, and even resilience, but the extant literature on child outcomes has been limited to more qualitatively oriented reviews and has typically focused on child internalizing and externalizing problems. Thus, the current meta-analysis adds a novel and critically missing quantitative component to our broad understanding of the associations between grandparental care and children's problem behavior. In addition, beyond studies examining children's internalizing and externalizing outcomes, the authors also report on several studies (n = 7) that examine children's positive well-being and overall mental health. Overall, among the 38 studies deemed acceptable for review, the meta-analysis included findings from nearly 345,000 children, with a mean age of 10 years and slightly more female (51%) than male children.

Development and Psychopathology has been a premier resource for understanding stressful childhood experiences and the intergenerational continuity of psychopathology. Building on that tradition, we examined the unique and joint influences of maternal stress on children's effortful control (age 7) and externalizing behavior (age 11) as transmitted via genetics, the prenatal environment, and the postnatal environment. The sample included N = 561 adopted children and their biological and adoptive parents. Path models identified a direct effect of biological mother life stress on children's effortful control (ß = -.08) and an indirect effect of her life stress on child externalizing behavior via effortful control (ß = .52), but no main or indirect effects of biological parent psychopathology, prenatal stress, or adoptive mother adverse childhood experiences (ACES). Adoptive mother ACES amplified the association between biological mother life stress and child effortful control (ß = -.08), externalizing behavior (ß = 1.41), and the indirect effect via effortful control, strengthening associations when adoptive mothers reported average or high ACES during their own childhoods. Results suggest that novel study designs are needed to enhance the understanding of how life stress gets "under the skin" to affect psychopathology in the offspring of adults who have experienced stress.

Allele-specific gene expression evolves rapidly on heteromorphic sex chromosomes. Over time, the accumulation of mutations on the Y chromosome leads to widespread loss of gametolog expression, relative to the X chromosome. It remains unclear if expression evolution on degrading Y chromosomes is primarily driven by mutations that accumulate through processes of selective interference, or if positive selection can also favor the down-regulation of coding regions on the Y chromosome that contain deleterious mutations. Identifying the relative rates of cis-regulatory sequence evolution across Y chromosomes has been challenging due to the limited number of reference assemblies. The threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) Y chromosome is an excellent model to identify how regulatory mutations accumulate on Y chromosomes due to its intermediate state of divergence from the X chromosome. A large number of Y-linked gametologs still exist across 3 differently aged evolutionary strata to test these hypotheses. We found that putative enhancer regions on the Y chromosome exhibited elevated substitution rates and decreased polymorphism when compared to nonfunctional sites, like intergenic regions and synonymous sites. This suggests that many cis-regulatory regions are under positive selection on the Y chromosome. This divergence was correlated with X-biased gametolog expression, indicating the loss of expression from the Y chromosome may be favored by selection. Our findings provide evidence that Y-linked cis-regulatory regions exhibit signs of positive selection quickly after the suppression of recombination and allow comparisons with recent theoretical models that suggest the rapid divergence of regulatory regions may be favored to mask deleterious mutations on the Y chromosome.

The present study examined genetic, prenatal, and postnatal environmental pathways in the intergenerational transmission of anxiety and depressive symptoms from parents to early adolescents (when these symptoms start to increase), while considering timing effects of exposure to parent anxiety and depressive symptoms postnatally. The sample was from the Early Growth and Development Study, including 561 adopted children (57% male, 55% White, 13% Black/African American, 11% Hispanic/Latine, 20% multiracial, 1% other; 407 provided data in early adolescence) and their birth (BP) and adoptive parents (AP). Using a trait-state-occasion model with eight assessments from child ages 9 months to 11 years, we partitioned trait-like AP anxiety and depressive symptoms from time-specific fluctuations of AP anxiety and depressive symptoms. Offspring anxiety and depressive symptoms were assessed at 11 years (while controlling for similar symptoms at 4.5 years). Results suggested that time-specific fluctuations of AP1 (mostly mothers) anxiety/depressive symptoms in infancy (9 months) were indirectly associated with offspring anxiety/depressive symptoms at 11 years via offspring anxiety/depressive symptoms at 4.5 years; time-specific fluctuations of AP1 anxiety/depressive symptoms at child age 11 years were concurrently associated with offspring anxiety/depressive symptoms at 11 years. AP2 (mostly fathers) anxiety/depressive symptoms were not associated with offspring symptoms. Genetic and prenatal influences measured by BP internalizing problems were not associated with offspring symptoms. Results suggested infancy and early adolescence as developmental periods when children are susceptible to influences of parent anxiety and depressive symptoms. Preventive interventions should consider time-specific fluctuations in parent anxiety and depressive symptoms during these developmental periods. RESUMEN

Introduced in the context of developmental psychopathology by Cicchetti and Rogosh in the Journal, the current paper incorporates the principles of equifinality and multifinality to support the use of tiered models to prevent the development of emerging child psychopathology and promote school readiness in early childhood. We use the principles of equifinality and multifinality to describe the limitations of applying one intervention model to address all children presenting with different types of risk for early problem behavior. We then describe the potential benefits of applying a tiered model for having impacts at the population level and two initial applications of this approach during early childhood. The first of these tiered models, Smart Beginnings, integrates the use of two evidenced-based preventive interventions, Video Interaction Project, a universal parenting program, and Family Check-Up, a selective parenting program. Building on the strengths of Smart Beginnings, the second trial, The Pittsburgh Study includes Video Interaction Project and Family Check-Up, and other more and less-intensive programs to address the spectrum of challenges facing parents of young children. Findings from these two projects are discussed with their implications for developing tiered models to support children's early development and mental health.
