RESUMEN

Optofluidic devices hold great promise in biomedical diagnostics and testing because of their advantages of miniaturization, high sensitivity, high throughput, and high scalability. However, conventional silicon-based photonic chips suffer from complicated fabrication processes and less flexibility in functionalization, thus hindering their development of cost-effective biomedical diagnostic devices for daily tests and massive applications in responding to public health crises. In this paper, we present an optofluidic chip based on directly printed polymer optical waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensors for label-free biomarker detection. With digital ultraviolet lithography technology, high-sensitivity asymmetric MZI microsensors based on a width-tailored optical waveguide are directly printed and vertically integrated with a microfluidic layer to make an optofluidic chip. Experimental results show that the sensitivity of the directly printed polymer optical waveguide MZI sensor is about 1695.95 nm/RIU. After being modified with capture molecules, i.e., goat anti-human immunoglobulin G (IgG), the polymer optical waveguide MZI sensors can on-chip detect human IgG at the concentration level of 1.78 pM. Such a polymer optical waveguide-based optofluidic chip has the advantages of miniaturization, cost-effectiveness, high sensitivity, and ease in functionalization and thus has great potential in the development of daily available point-of-care diagnostic and testing devices.

In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate an integrated polarizer on thin film lithium niobate (TFLN). The polarizer consists of a width-tapered 180° Euler bending waveguide featuring thin thickness and bilevel mode convertors with silica cladding. Notably, the TE0 mode is efficiently confined in the waveguide, while the TM0 mode confronts significant bending losses. The measurements reveal that the excess loss remains below 1.5 dB, and the extinction ratio surpasses 19 dB within a working bandwidth spanning from 1480 to 1578 nm. The proposed polarizer holds considerable promise for enhancing polarization handling within TFLN photonic circuits.

In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate a fiber-to-chip edge coupler (EC) on an x-cut thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) for polarization-insensitive (PI) coupling. The EC consists of three width-tapered full-etched waveguides with silica cladding and matches well with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The measured results show that the minimum coupling losses for TE0/TM0 modes remain to be 0.9 dB/1.1 dB per facet, and the polarization dependent loss (PDL) is <0.5 dB over the wavelength range from 1260 to 1340 nm. Moreover, the EC features large misalignment tolerance of ±2 µm in the Z direction and ±1.5 µm in the X direction for both polarizations for a 1 dB penalty. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first realized O-band edge coupler on TFLN with SMF. The proposed device shows promising potential for integration into TFLN polarization diversity devices.

RESUMEN

An iodoform-promoted functionalization of ether with secondary sulfonyl amides under visible-light irradiation was developed toward synthesis of hemiaminal skeleton with good to excellent isolated yields. The characterization of the isolated ether and iodoform complex revealed regioselective hydrogen atom transfer to initiate carbon radical formation and enabled the amination reaction with the sulfonamide.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a polarization multiplexed silicon optical phased array (OPA) with a wide scanning range. The two polarization states share the same power splitter tree and the phase shifter array. A polarization switch is introduced in front of the power splitter tree to manipulate the polarization state of the light in OPA. Through a polarization splitter-rotator (PSR), the light of two polarization states propagates into the superlattice grating antenna array. The wavelength tuning efficiency could be doubled by optimizing the parameters of the waveguide grating. We demonstrate the scheme on the commonly used 220 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Experimental results indicate that the 24.8° vertical scanning range could be realized with a high wavelength tuning efficiency of 0.31°/nm. The measured field of view (FOV) is 24.8 × 60°.

A radical hydroalkylative cyclization approach accessing various alkenyl heterocyclic compounds was developed using dimethyl malonate and 1,6-enynes in the presence of visible-light photoredox catalysis. The use of Ir(dtbbpy)(ppy)2PF6 as a photosensitizer enables carbon atom radical formation and initiates the cascade cyclization reaction under mild conditions.

Described herein is a photoinduced copper-catalyzed 1,2-difunctionalization of 1,3-dienes. The selenium atom radical was generated by the visible light irradiation of diselenides, triggering radical addition with 1,3-dienes to form allyl radical intermediate. Subsequent rapid Z/E isomerization allowed for thermodynamically favorable intermediate formation and enabled copper catalyzed stereoselective functionalization with various nucleophiles.

α-H alkylation of carbonyls is a significant reaction in the pharmaceutical industry because it can directly form a C-C bond in an environmentally benign manner. Thus, developing a novel catalyst for this reaction is a hot and practical topic in catalysis, organic synthesis, and materials science. In this paper, we found that polyaniline-supported tungsten could catalyze the α-H alkylation reaction of ketone with alcohol generating water as the only byproduct. Polyaniline support is the key for promoting the catalytic activity of tungsten, which is relatively cheaper than the traditionally employed noble metals. The reaction occurred under mild conditions with a wide substrate scope. The substrate initial concentration was enhanced to 1 mol/L, while the reaction speed was accelerated to reduce the reaction time to only 6 h; these improvements could significantly enhance the production capacity. The advantages make this reaction practical for synthesis with industrial purposes.

Low-loss and energy-efficient phase shifters are an effective tool to reduce the power consumption of large-scale photonic integrated circuits. In this work, a low-loss and power-efficient thermo-optic phase shifter has been demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The multimode spiral waveguide is optimized to obtain lower power consumption and low cross talk. The waveguide width is beyond the single-mode region in consideration of low propagation loss. The optimized ultra-low loss 180° Bezier bends are used to further reduce the bending loss. The experimental results show that the excess loss of the phase shifter is only 0.36 dB at 1550-nm wavelength and the power consumption is 4.87 mW/π.

Described herein is a palladium-catalyzed borylative cyclization and cyclopropanation of terminal alkyne-derived enynes, affording borylated bicycles, fused cycles, and bridged cycles in good isolated yields. The synthetic utility of this protocol was fully demonstrated by large scale reaction and synthetic derivatization of the borate group.

RESUMEN

High refractive index polymers (HRIPs) have drawn attention for their optoelectronic applications and HRIPs with excellent transparency and facile preparation are highly demanded. Herein, sulfur-containing all organic HRIPs with refractive indices up to 1.8433 at 589 nm and excellent optical transparency even in one hundred micrometre scale in the visual and RI region as well as high weight-average molecular weights (up to 44500) are prepared by our developed organobase catalyzed polymerization of bromoalkynes and dithiophenols in yields up to 92%. Notably, the fabricated optical transmission waveguides using the resultant HRIP with the highest refractive index display a reduced propagation loss compared with that generated by the commercial material of SU-8. In addition, the tetraphenylethylene containing polymer not only exhibits a reduced propagation loss, but also is used to examine the uniformity and continuity of optical waveguides with naked eyes because of its aggregation-induced emission feature.

Described herein is a visible-light photoredox-catalyzed regioselective 1,4-hydroalkylation of 1,3-enynes. Various of di- and tri-substituent allenes were really accessible under the present reaction conditions. The visible-light photoredox activation of the carbon nucleophile to generate its radical species, allowing the addition with un-activated enynes. The synthetic utility for the present protocol was demonstrated by a large-scale reaction, as well as the derivatization of the allene product.

A low-loss ridge waveguide is proposed and demonstrated with a novel, to the best of our knowledge, bound state in the continuum (BIC)-based structure on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The presented waveguide is designed appropriately to suppress TM-mode leakage, and has a theoretically low propagation loss of ∼0.0027 dB/cm at 1550 nm. In the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1600 nm, the 2-mm-long waveguide can achieve an average loss suppression of ∼30 dB in the experiment. Such a novel ridge waveguide structure can also be introduced into narrowband optical filters. The fabricated Bragg grating filter working at the TM mode can achieve a narrow bandwidth of ∼1 nm and an extinction ratio of ∼14.8 dB.

A grating lobe-free silicon optical phased array with large field of view is demonstrated. Antennas with periodically bending modulation are spaced at half wavelength or less. The experimental results show that the crosstalk between adjacent waveguides is negligible at 1550 nm wavelength. Additionally, to reduce the optical reflection caused by the sudden change of refractive index at the output antenna of the phased array, tapered antennas are added to the output end face so that more light will be coupled into the free space. The fabricated optical phased array shows a field of view of 120° without any grating lobes.

We propose and demonstrate two types of 1 × 2 power splitters based on multimode interference (MMI), which are ultra-compact, fabrication friendly, and low loss. The contours of MMI and output tapers are optimized with Bezier curves, which can implement arbitrary ratio power splitters (ARPSs) and ultra-broadband dual-polarization power splitters (UDPSs). For ARPSs, the experimental results show that arbitrary power splitting ratios can be obtained with an average excess loss (EL) of 0.17 dB at 1550 nm for fundamental TE polarization. For UDPSs, the experimental results show that the ELs for fundamental TE and TM polarization are less than 0.63 dB and 0.44 dB over a large bandwidth of 415 nm (1260-1675 nm). The footprints of the proposed devices are less than 10 µm × 2.5 µm (without input straight waveguide) with large fabrication tolerance.

Optical phased array (OPA) based on silicon photonics is considered as a promising candidate for realizing solid-state beam steering. However, the high refractive index contrast of the silicon waveguides leads to conventional silicon based OPA suffering from large random phase errors, which require complex post-processing such as time-consuming phase calibration. We propose and demonstrate a calibration-free silicon OPA with optimized optical waveguides width as well as the compact 90° waveguide bends beyond the single mode regime. By using grouped cascaded phase shifters, it is able to reduce the number of control electrodes from N to log2(N). A 16-channel OPA has been demonstrated with continuous beam steering over the field of view controlled by only four control voltages without any calibration.

Described herein is a copper-catalyzed efficient oxidative dearomatized functionalization of indoles by using alcohols as the nucleophiles. Various 3-alkoxy-2-oxindoles were accessible with good isolated yields. The synthetic potential applications are demonstrated by the large-scale reaction, as well as the derivatization of the desired 3-alkoxy substituted-2-oxindole products.

Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities with high Q factor and low volume have been applied in nonlinear, electro-optic and acoustic-optic devices due to the enhancement of the light-matter interactions. However, there are few devices and research on LiNbO3 (LN) PhC cavities due to the difficulty in making hyperfine structures on LN platform. In this work, we propose a PhC nanobeam cavity on the etchless x-cut LiNbO3-On-Insulator (LNOI). The fabrication-friendly device has been designed based on photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) exhibiting a high Q factor of over 10,000 with the device length of only about 100 µm. Utilizing the electro-optical effect γ13 of LN, we demonstrate an ultra-compact electro-optic modulator based on the PhC nanobeam cavities, which has the modulation efficiency of 1.5 pm/V and the 3 dB bandwidth of 28 GHz.

On-chip nonvolatile photonic switches enabled by phase change materials (PCMs) are promising building blocks for power-efficient programmable photonic integrated circuits. However, large absorption loss in conventional PCMs (such as Ge2Sb2Te5) interacting with weak evanescent waves in silicon waveguides usually leads to high insertion loss and a large device footprint. In this paper, we propose a 2×2 photonic switch based on two-mode interference in a multimode slot waveguide (MSW) with ultralow loss Sb2S3 integrated inside the slot region. The MSW supports two lowest order TE modes, i.e., symmetric TE00 and antisymmetric TE01 modes, and the phase of Sb2S3 could actively tune two-mode interference behavior. Owing to the enhanced electric field in the slot, the interaction strength between modal field and Sb2S3 could be boosted, and a photonic switch containing a ∼9.4 µm-long Sb2S3-MSW hybrid section could effectively alter the light transmission between bar and cross ports upon the phase change of Sb2S3 with a cross talk (CT) less than -13.6 dB and an insertion loss (IL) less than 0.26 dB in the telecommunication C-band. Especially at 1550 nm, the CT in the amorphous (crystalline) Sb2S3 is -36.1 dB (-31.1 dB) with a corresponding IL of 0.073 dB (0.055 dB). The proposed 2×2 photonic switch is compact in size and compatible with on-chip microheaters, which may find promising applications in reconfigurable photonic devices.

We have designed and demonstrated a reconfigurable channel add-drop filter (ADF) based on an antisymmetric multimode photonic crystal nanobeam cavity (AM-PCNC) in a silicon waveguide. The proposed AM-PCNC can realize channel add-drop filtering by selectively filtering and reflecting the fundamental mode (TE0) and 1st-order mode (TE1) in the multimode waveguide. A high-performance add-drop filter has been demonstrated with a high extinction ratio of 28.2 dB and an insertion loss of 0.18 dB. Meanwhile, the reconfigurable add-dropping has been realized by heating the nanobeam cavity to tune the filtering wavelength. A tuning efficiency of 0.464 nm/mW was measured. The rising and falling time are ∼6.5 µs and ∼0.6 µs, respectively, which are at microsecond time scale. The footprint of the involved nanobeam cavity is only 16.5 µm2. The device can potentially provide an integrated component for optical switch array, routers, and wavelength-division multiplexing in the optical networks.
