RESUMEN

We successfully demonstrated the effect of a membrane reactor for methanol synthesis to improve one-pass CO2 conversion. An Si-rich LTA membrane for dehydration from a methanol synthesis reaction field was synthesized by the seed-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method. The H2O permselective performance of the membrane showed 1.5 × 10-6 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 as H2O permeance and around 2000 as selectivity of H2O/MeOH at 473 K. From the results of membrane reactor tests, the CO2 conversion of the membrane reactor was higher than that of the conventional packed-bed reactor under the all of experimental conditions. Especially, at 4 MPa of reaction pressure, the conversion using the membrane reactor was around 60%. In the case of using a packed-bed reactor, the conversion was 20% under the same conditions. In addition, the calculated and experimental conversion were in good agreement in both the case of the membrane reactor and packed-bed reactor.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although it has been discussed which measures against atherosclerotic diseases should be started in childhood, the current situation in Japan is unclear. Methods and Results:We conducted a health management survey of all 12-year-old children in a local town for 20 years. The body mass index tended to decrease over time. Although the serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level did not change, the levels of serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and serum triglycerides significantly increased over time. CONCLUSIONS: The serum triglyceride levels in school children increased significantly, probably through lifestyle changes, and the health management system should be reviewed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: There has so far been little information on the clinical effect of bevacizumab against colorectal cancer in Japan. Hence, this study was conducted to retrospectively evaluate the safety and efficacy of bevacizumab in clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 181 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) received bevacizumab in combination with chemotherapy at 18 hospitals in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan. We surveyed the medical records of all patients regarding the patient characteristics, objective tumor responses, and adverse events. We analyzed their overall survival and the survival benefit when continuing the administration of bevacizumab beyond disease progression (progressive disease; PD) in patients who received bevacizumab-containing 1st line therapy. RESULTS: The response rate (RR) in all lines of therapy was 42 %. The 1st line patients showed significantly better survival in comparison to the patients who received further lines of treatment (P = 0.005). There were no significant differences in survival between the group with post-PD treatment with bevacizumab and the group with post-PD treatment without bevacizumab (P = 0.13). The most common grade 3 or greater adverse event associated with bevacizumab was hypertension (12.2 %). Especially, a high incidence of gastrointestinal (GI) perforation was shown in this study (4.4 %) and most of the patients with GI perforation had some risk factors for this complication. CONCLUSION: Although the survival benefit of bevacizumab in Japanese patients with mCRC was similar to that observed in previous clinical trials, this study showed a high incidence of GI perforation in comparison to previous studies. Therefore, the careful selection of patients with few risk factors for this complication is likely to lead to a greater benefit from bevacizumab treatment.

RESUMEN

A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of perineal pain. He was diagnosed as advanced rectal cancer with an invasion of prostate, and we conducted neoadjuvant capecitabine, oxaliplatin, bevacizumab and radiation therapy. After chemoradiation therapy, the tumor regressed to an ulcerative lesion without invasion of the prostate. Abdominoperineal resection was then performed without radical resection. The tumor regressed to an ulcer and only a few cancer cells were detected in the submucosal layer pathologically.

RESUMEN

A 67-year-old man underwent right hemi-colectomy for ascending colon cancer in 2007. One year later, he was diagnosed as early gastric cancer, and endoscopic submucosal dissection was performed. Pathologically, cancer cells were detected on the vertical margin, so we conducted distal gastrectomy. A dissected lymph node around the hepatic artery was histologically proved to contain adenocarcinoma cells. The cancer cells were positive for CK20. Colon cancer cells were also positive for CK20 but gastric cancer cells were focally positive for CK20. This pattern of CK staining suggested the ascending colon cancer metastasized to a gastric regional lymph node.
