RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although people strive for meaning in life, life is full of experiences that challenge meaning. According to Bowen's family systems theory, the family is both a relational and an emotional system in which family members influence and are influenced by each other. Invalidating environment, reflecting a deficient family emotional setting, may be a key influencing factor in diminishing meaning in life. Existing studies have not directly explored the effects of the invalidating environment on meaning in life and its underlying mechanism. OBJECTIVE: Guided by Bowen's family systems theory, this study aims to explore the relationship between invalidating environment and meaning in life, as well as the mediating effects of regulatory emotional self-efficacy and the satisfaction of basic psychological needs. METHODS: A sample of 555 university students (62.5 % female, 37.5 % male; Mage =19.13 years old, SD = 1.72) completed questionnaires regarding demographics, invalidating environment, meaning in life, regulatory emotional self-efficacy, and basic psychological needs satisfaction. RESULTS: Results revealed that: (a) invalidating environment negatively predicts meaning in life; (b) regulatory emotional self-efficacy and basic psychological needs satisfaction serve as both independent and chain mediators between invalidating environment and meaning in life. CONCLUSION: Invalidating environment affects meaning in life through regulatory emotional self-efficacy and basic psychological needs satisfaction. This finding has significant theoretical implications and provides a feasible pathway to improve children's meaning in life at both the parent and child levels.

RESUMEN

Purpose: Adolescents living in protracted conflict areas have mostly been perceived as passive recipients of the impact of events in their surroundings who are rarely considered agents of social transformation. But a growing body of research on adolescents' psychological development indicates that adolescents actively perceive concepts like peace and their roles and responsibilities toward creating conditions for peace. Applying the Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory, this study focuses on understanding how adolescents from Afghanistan with lifelong exposure to intractable conflict conceptualize peace. Methods: The study was conducted in the Bagrami, Paghman and Dih Sabz districts of Kabul City in Afghanistan. A semi-structured open-ended questionnaire was used to interview 63 male and female adolescents aged 13-19. The participants belonged to different ethnic groups, such as Pashtun, Hazara and Tajik. An inductive approach was applied to analyze the data using thematic analysis. Results: Three distinct themes about peace emerged from the data: peace based on individual emotions, social relations, and larger societal structures. Peace for adolescents had both personal and inner and social or outer dimensions. Afghan adolescents' conceptualization of peace is primarily based on their interaction with the micro-system. Home and family provided perceived calmness and normalcy, which characterized peace as individual emotion. Social relations, often determined by good communication, community cohesiveness, and social support between family members, neighbours, and ethnic groups, constituted adolescents' concepts about peace. Adolescents also demonstrated awareness of larger societal structures, such as the role of community leaders and government in ensuring perceived safety and security, forming their concepts of peace. Conclusion: Adolescents have meaningful voices capable of forming perceptions about peace. The microsystem of an adolescent's environment has a significant influence in the conceptualization of peace. This study contributes to expanding the knowledge on the underpinnings of peace by relating to developmental and peace psychology.

RESUMEN

Background: China is comprehensively promoting the construction of social psychological service system. Methods: Following qualitative approach semi-structured interviews were conducted with community mental health service providers experienced in working with migrant children. The 15 individual interviews were conducted in Hubei province and Guangdong province, including professionals working with different social organization and social psychological service program in communities. The data were analysed through coding, comparing fragments, constant comparison and recognizing patterns. Results: The analysis yielded 3 categories (Stimulate the internal strength, Reconstruct the support systems, Understanding and participate in social activities) and 6 sub-categories (Improve the understanding of "me" and explore excellent qualities, Clearly envision "my" future and clear career planning, Improve the parent-child relationship and understand the family environment, Improve subjective support and actively develop support system, Acquire reasonable cognition and behavior and interact with surrounding ecology, Take greater responsibility and cultivate a sense of ownership). The results found that individual traits, family, communities and multiple factors affect the mental health of migrant children and identified the urgent needs, and ways to improve mental health service in efficiently and economically. Social psychological service providers contribute in strengthening the psychological well-being of the migrant children. Conclusion: Social psychological service sectors need to be strengthened to enhance the psychological well-being of the migrant children. The inherent gaps between the service required and service provided needs to be addressed through further studies on mental health needs of the migrant children.

RESUMEN

A substantial portion of drug abuse research has concentrated on people with a single-substance-use disorder (SSUD), but many people abuse more than one drug. Studies have yet to examine how those with polysubstance-use disorder (PSUD) differ from those with an SSUD on the risk of relapse, self-evaluative emotions (e.g., shame and guilt), and personality factors (e.g., self-efficacy). Eleven rehab facilities in Lahore city, Pakistan were randomly chosen to provide a sample of 402 males with PSUD. For comparison, 410 age-matched males with SSUD were enlisted using a demographic form with eight questions, the State Shame and Guilt Scale, and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Mediated moderation analysis was performed using Hayes' process macro. The results demonstrate that shame-proneness is positively associated with relapse rate. Guilt-proneness mediates the relationship between shame-proneness and relapse rate. Self-efficacy buffers the influence of shame-proneness on relapse rate. Although the mediation and moderation effects were found in both study groups, these effects were significantly stronger among people with PSUD than those with SSUD. To be more specific, people with PSUD reported a higher overall score on shame, guilt, and relapse rate. Additionally, people with SSUD indicated a higher score on self-efficacy than those with PSUD. The findings of this study suggest that drug rehab facilities should implement a variety of strategies to raise drug users' levels of self-efficacy, which will help to reduce their risk of relapse.

RESUMEN

This study investigates the effects of loneliness and empathy on romantic relationship satisfaction and phubbing. Loneliness plays a mediating role in romantic relationship satisfaction and phubbing. The level of empathy moderates these mediating effects. Five hundred and four Chinese adults completed tests of romantic relationship satisfaction, phubbing, loneliness, and empathy. The results show that romantic relationship satisfaction is negatively correlated with phubbing. Loneliness mediates this process. Specifically, lower romantic relationship satisfaction leads to more phubbing by increasing loneliness. Our study also shows that the mediating relationship is moderated by the level of empathy. To be more specific, the higher the level of empathy, the stronger the impact of romantic relationship satisfaction on loneliness, and the more phubbing individuals exhibit.
