RESUMEN

Legumes account for a significant proportion of plants in the terrestrial ecosystems. Nitrogen-fixing capability of certain legumes is a pivotal trait that contributes to their ecological dominance. Yet, the functional traits and trait relationships between N-fixer and non-N-fixer legumes are poorly understood. Here, we investigated 27 functional traits associated with morphology, nutrients, hydraulic conductance, and photosynthesis in 42 woody legumes (19 N-fixers and 23 non-N-fixers) in a common garden. Our results showed that N-fixers had higher specific leaf area, photosynthetic phosphorus (P) use efficiency, leaf nitrogen (N) and iron concentrations on both area and mass basis, N/P ratio, and carbon (C) to P ratio, but lower wood density, area-based maximum photosynthetic rate (Aa), photosynthetic N use efficiency, leaf mass- and area-based P and molybdenum and area-based boron concentrations, and C/N ratio, compared to non-N-fixers. The mass-based maximum photosynthetic rate (Am), stomatal conductance (gs), intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi), mass- and area-based leaf potassium and mass-based boron concentrations, leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), and whole-shoot hydraulic conductance (Kshoot) showed no difference between N-fixers and non-N-fixers. Significant positive associations between all hydraulic and photosynthetic trait pairs were found in N-fixers, but only one pair (Kshoot-Aa) in non-N-fixers, suggesting that hydraulic conductance plays a more important role in mediating photosynthetic capacity in N-fixers compared to non-N-fixers. Higher mass-based leaf N was linked to lower time-integrated gs and higher WUEi among non-N-fixer legumes or all legumes pooled after phylogeny was considered. Moreover, mass-based P concentration was positively related to Am and gs in N-fixers, but not in non-N-fixers, indicating that the photosynthetic capacity and stomatal conductance in N-fixers were more dependent on leaf P status than in non-N-fixers. These findings expand our understanding of the trait-based ecology within and across N-fixer and non-N-fixer legumes in tropics.

PURPOSE: To develop a nomogram using clinical features and the MRI parameters for preoperatively predicting the expression of Ki-67 in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: One hundred and forty patients (training cohorts: n = 108; validation cohorts: n = 32) with confirmed HCC were investigated. Mann-Whitney U test, independent sample t-test, and chi-squared test were used to analyze the continuous and categorical variables. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the clinical variables and parameters from MRI associated with Ki-67 expression. As a result, a nomogram was developed based on these associations in patients with HCC. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and calibration curves. RESULTS: In the training set, multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive fraction of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP-L3) levels, protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) levels, and tumor shape were independent predictors for Ki-67 expression (p < 0.05). These three variables and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value were used to establish a nomogram, while the ADC value was found to be a marginal significant predictor. The model demonstrated a strong ability to discriminate Ki-67 expression in both the training and validation cohorts (AUC = 0.862, 0.877). CONCLUSION: A non-invasive preoperative prediction method, which incorporates MRI variables and clinical features was developed, and showed effectiveness in evaluating Ki-67 expression in HCC patients.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of coronary collateral circulation (CC) in patients undergoing chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is underdetermined. The purpose of the study was to assess the prognostic value of current two CC grading systems and their association with long-term outcomes in patients with CTO underwent PCI. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled patients with single-vessel CTO underwent PCI between January 2010 and December 2013. All patients were categorized into well-developed or poor-developed collaterals group according to angiographic Werner's CC (grade 2 vs. grade 0-1) or Rentrop (grade 3 vs. grade 0-2) grading system. The primary endpoint was 5-year cardiac death. RESULTS: Of 2452 enrolled patients, the overall technical success rate was 74.1%. Well-developed collaterals were present in 686 patients (28.0%) defined by Werner's CC grade 2, and in 1145 patients (46.7%) by Rentrop grade 3. According to Werner's CC grading system, patients with well-developed collaterals had a lower rate of 5-year cardiac death compared with those with poor-developed collaterals (1.6% vs. 3.3%, P = 0.02), those with suboptimal recanalization was associated with higher rate of 5-year cardiac death compared with optimal recanalization (4.7% vs. 0.8%, P = 0.01) and failure patients (4.7% vs. 1.6%, P = 0.12). However, the similar effect was not shown in Rentrop grading system. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with the single-vessel CTO underwent PCI, well-developed collaterals by Werner's CC definition were associated with lower rate of 5-year cardiac death. Werner's CC grading system had a greater prognostic value than Rentrop grading system in patients with CTO underwent PCI.

CONTEXT: Many patients recovering from surgery in wards are disturbed by environmental noise. However, the effects of environmental noise on postoperative pain are unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association between postoperative noise and pain. METHODS: This prospective study included 182 women who underwent cesarean sections. Postoperative noise was continuously recorded, and pain intensity at rest was assessed using a numerical rating scale (NRS) for 0-6, 6-12, 12-18, and 18-24 h after the patients were returned to the ward. Cumulative pain scores were calculated by summing the NRS scores at each time point and comprised the primary outcome. The maximum pain NRS score and analgesic consumption during the 24 h after surgery were also recorded. RESULTS: Mean environmental noise intensity during the daytime was an independent factor for cumulative pain scores, maximum pain scores, and analgesic use during the first postoperative 24 h (ß, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.21-0.53 and ß, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.07-0.17; P < 0.001 for both; ß, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.25-1.46; P = 0.006). Cumulative and maximum NRS pain scores as well as the incidence of NRS ≥ 4 were significantly higher in patients under mean daytime environmental noise of ≥58, than <58 decibels (dB) (8.0 [6.0-11.3] vs. 6.0 (5.0-7.0); 3.0 [2.0-4.0] vs. 2.0 [2.0-2.0, and 25.6% vs. 11.0%; RR, 2.32; 95% CI, 1.19-4.54, respectively; P < 0.001 for all). CONCLUSIONS: Higher-level postoperative noise exposure was associated with more severe postoperative pain and increased analgesic needs, as well as a higher incidence of moderate-to-severe pain in patients recovering from cesarean delivery. Our findings indicate that reducing environmental ward noise might benefit for postoperative pain management.

Bolboschoenus planiculmis (F.Schmidt) T.V.Egorova is a typical wetland plant in the species-rich Cyperaceae family. This species contributes prominently to carbon dynamics and trophic integration in wetland ecosystems. Previous studies have reported that the chromosomes of B. planiculmis are holocentric; i.e. they have kinetic activity along their entire length and carry multiple centromeres. This feature was suggested to lead to a rapid genome evolution through chromosomal fissions and fusions and participate to the diversification and ecological success of the Bolboschoenus genus. However, the specific mechanism remains uncertain, partly due to the scarcity of genetic information on Bolboschoenus. We present here the first chromosome-level genome assembly for B. planiculmis. Through the integration of high-quality long-read and short-read data, together with chromatin conformation using Hi-C technology, the ultimate genome assembly was 238.01 Mb with a contig N50 value of 3.61 Mb. Repetitive elements constituted 37.04% of the genome, and 18,760 protein-coding genes were predicted. The low proportion of long terminal repeat retrotransposons (∼9.62%) was similar to that reported for other Cyperaceae species. The Ks (synonymous substitutions per synonymous site) distribution suggested no recent large-scale genome duplication in this genome. The haploid assembly contained a large number of 54 pseudochromosomes with a small mean size of 4.10 Mb, covering most of the karyotype. The results of centromere detection support that not all the chromosomes in B. planiculmis have multiple centromeres, indicating more efforts are needed to fully reveal the specific style of holocentricity in cyperids and its evolutionary significance.

Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress contribute to the progression of sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE). Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is considered to be a neuroprotective factor due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the role of ACE2 on myeloid cells in regulating SAE and the underlying mechanism warrants further exploration. SAE was induced in ACE2 transgenic (TG), knockout (KO), and bone marrow (BM) chimeric mice by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The expression levels of apoptosis-, oxidation- and neuroinflammation-associated mediators and morphological changes were monitored by quantitative real-time PCR analyses and histological examinations in the cortex of septic mice. The contents of angiotensin (Ang) II and Ang-(1-7) along with the activity of ACE2 were examined with commercial kits. The expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and Sestrin2 was detected by immunoblotting analysis. Our results indicated that the expression of cortical ACE2 was significantly reduced in the early phase of CLP-induced sepsis. Moreover, ACE2 overexpression in TG mice conferred neuroprotection against sepsis, as evidenced by alleviated neuronal apoptosis, oxidative stress, and proinflammatory M1-like microglial polarization, accompanied by upregulation of the Ang-(1-7), Nrf2, and Sestrin2 protein levels. Conversely, ACE2 deficiency in KO mice exacerbated SAE. The neuroprotective effects of ACE2 were further confirmed in wild-type mice transplanted with ACE2-TG and KO BM cells. Therefore, our data suggest that myeloid ACE2 exerts a protective role in the pathogenesis of SAE, potentially by activating Ang-(1-7)-Nrf2/sestrin2 signaling pathway, and highlight that upregulating ACE2 expression and activity may represent a promising approach for the treatment of SAE in patients with sepsis.

BACKGROUND: The recently introduced ultrasonic flow ratio (UFR), is a novel fast computational method to derive fractional flow reserve (FFR) from intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images. In the present study, we evaluate the diagnostic performance of UFR in patients with intermediate left main (LM) stenosis. METHODS: This is a prospective, single center study enrolling consecutive patients with presence of intermediated LM lesions (diameter stenosis of 30%-80% by visual estimation) underwent IVUS and FFR measurement. An independent core laboratory assessed offline UFR and IVUS-derived minimal lumen area (MLA) in a blinded fashion. RESULTS: Both UFR and FFR were successfully achieved in 41 LM patients (mean age, 62.0 ± 9.9 years, 46.3% diabetes). An acceptable correlation between UFR and FFR was identified (r = 0.688, P < 0.0001), with an absolute numerical difference of 0.03 (standard difference: 0.01). The area under the curve (AUC) in diagnosis of physiologically significant coronary stenosis for UFR was 0.94 (95% CI: 0.87-1.01), which was significantly higher than angiographic identified stenosis > 50% (AUC = 0.66, P < 0.001) and numerically higher than IVUS-derived MLA (AUC = 0.82; P = 0.09). Patient level diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for UFR to identify FFR ≤ 0.80 was 82.9% (95% CI: 70.2-95.7), 93.1% (95% CI: 82.2-100.0), 58.3% (95% CI: 26.3-90.4), respectively. CONCLUSION: In patients with intermediate LM diseases, UFR was proved to be associated with acceptable correlation and high accuracy with pressure wire-based FFR as standard reference. The present study supports the use of UFR for functional evaluation of intermediate LM stenosis.

Background: Pain management after lung resection plays a crucial role in reducing postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). This study aimed to examine the effect of postoperative esketamine infusion as an adjunct to opioid analgesia on ventilation and pulmonary complications in patients underwent lung resection. Methods: Patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic lung resection were randomly assigned to either the esketamine group or the control group. The esketamine group received a 24-h infusion of 1.5 mcg/ml sufentanil combined with 0.75 mcg/ml esketamine after surgery, while the control group received 1.5 mcg/ml sufentanil alone. The primary outcome measure was low minute ventilation, and the secondary outcome measures were hypoxemia, PaO2/FiO2 levels, postoperative pulmonary complications, hospital stay duration, ambulation time, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score, depression and anxiety levels, sleep quality, and analgesia satisfaction. Results: 80 patients were randomly divided into two groups: the esketamine group (n = 40) and the control group (n = 40). The esketamine group exhibited notably reduced incidence of low minute ventilation (P = 0.014), lower occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) compared to the control group (P = 0.039), and decreased incidence of hypoxemia (P = 0.003). Furthermore, the esketamine group showed improved outcomes with lower VAS scores on the second postoperative day and enhanced sleep quality (P < 0.001) after the surgery. Conclusions: Postoperative esketamine infusion with opioids improved ventilation and reduced PPCs after lung resection, warranting further clinical studies. Introduction: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and pain are common and distressing complications in patients undergoing surgery. However, it remains uncertain whether timing of the postoperative course or the diel rhythm influences the occurrence of PONV or severe pain. Therefore, we aimed to explore the temporal distribution of PONV and severe pain. Material and methods: In this prospective observational study, we enrolled patients aged 18-65 years with American Society of Anesthesiologists classifications I-III, who were scheduled for surgery under general anesthesia. Patients were visited postoperatively at regular intervals (every 6 h over a 24-h period). Incidence of PONV was recorded and categorized based on real-time divisions: before dawn (00:00-05:59), morning (06:00-11:59), afternoon (12:00-17:59), and evening (18:00-23:59) and as sequential periods (i.e., 0-6, 6-12, 12-18, and 18-24 h). Severe pain and use of additional remedies were also recorded. Results: A total of 724 patients were included in the final analysis. Of these, 14.92 % experienced PONV within the first 6 h, and 8.29 % received antiemetic therapy. Occurrence of PONV and administration of remedies declined over the 24-h postoperative period. The lowest rate of PONV was observed during the pre-dawn hours (5.66 %). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of PONV 24-h postoperatively between surgeries with different end times. Patients underwent orthopedic surgeries had the highest incidence of PONV during 18:00-23:59, gynecological surgery patients had the highest incidence at 12:00-17:59, and 6:00-11:59 for other surgery patients. All patients had the lowest incidence during 0:00-5:59. During the initial 6-h postoperative period, 24.59 % of patients experienced severe pain, which declined in the remaining episodes. Patients who underwent orthopedic and gynecological surgeries exhibited similar temporal patterns and distribution characteristics of PONV and severe pain. Discussion: Both PONV and severe pain declined within the 24-h postoperative period, particularly within the first 6 h. Additionally, the onset patterns of PONV vary among patients undergoing different types of surgeries, all patients demonstrated decreased susceptibility to PONV between 00:00-05:59. Our findings enhance prevention and treatment strategies within an optimized timeframe during the postoperative course.

Objective: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complications in patients who use tramadol for analgesia. This study evaluated the risk of nausea and vomiting related to intravenous tramadol administration. Methods: In this study, 315 patients who received pre-analgesia before elective surgery were selected, and participants were divided into groups based on the Apfel risk assessment of nausea and vomiting, as follows: high risk (Apfel=4), medium risk (Apfel=2-3), and low-risk (Apfel=1). Tramadol (1.5 mg/kg) was administered intravenously over a duration of 1 min, 2 min, or 3 min before anaesthesia induction to observe preoperative nausea and vomiting reactions within 10 min. Results: In the low-risk group, the numeric rating scale for postoperative nausea scores and the incidence of nausea and vomiting were significantly lower in the 3-min group than those in the 1-min group, and the incidence of preoperative nausea and vomiting after intravenous administration of tramadol in the 1-min and 3-min groups were significantly related to the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting. The incidence of nausea and vomiting during pre-administration in the 1-min and 3-min groups was identified as an independent risk factor for postoperative nausea and vomiting. Conclusions: In the clinical treatment of pain with tramadol, the slow intravenous application of tramadol within 3 min is worthy of being adopted and promoted by clinicians in their daily work.

Background: The effect of pain genes (NAV1, EHMT2, SP1, SLC6A4, COMT, OPRM1, OPRD1, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4) have not been reported previously in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) patients and thus we made a comprehensive analysis of pain genes in the prognosis of KIRC and tumor immunotherapy. Methods: In this study, TCGA, Kaplan-Meier plotter, Metascape, STRING, Human Protein Atlas, Single Cell Expression Atlas database, LinkedOmics, cBioPortal, MethSurv, CancerSEA, COSMIC database and R package (ggplot2, version 3.3.3) were used for comprehensive analysis of pain genes in KIRC. Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were for co-expression analysis. Immunotherapy and TISIDB database were used for tumor Immunotherapy. Results: Representative pain genes (SP1, SLC6A4, COMT, OPRD1, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4) were statistically significant (p < 0.0001) in the prognosis of KIRC. Immunotherapy (anti-PD-1 therapy, anti-PD-L1 therapy, and anti-CTLA4 therapy) and immunomodulator (immunoinhibitor, immunostimulator, and MHC molecule) in KIRC were significant associated with pain genes (SP1, SLC6A4, COMT, OPRD1, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4), which were the important addition to clinical decision making for patients. Conclusions: Our study uncovered a mechanism for the effect of pain genes on KIRC outcome via the modulation of associated co-expression gene networks, gene variation, and tumor Immunotherapy.

Importance: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are often used by smokers as an aid to stopping smoking, but evidence is limited regarding their efficacy compared with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and no evidence is available on how their efficacy compares with that of varenicline. Objective: To evaluate whether ECs are superior to NRT and noninferior to varenicline in helping smokers quit. Design, Setting, and Participants: This was a randomized clinical trial conducted at 7 sites in China and including participants who were smoking at least 10 cigarettes per day and motivated to quit, not using stop-smoking medications or EC, and willing to use any of the study products. Participants were first recruited in May 2021, and data analysis was conducted in December 2022. Interventions: A cartridge-based EC (30 mg/mL nicotine salt for 2 weeks and 50 mg/mL after that), varenicline (0.5 mg, once a day for 3 days; 0.5 mg, twice a day for 4 days; and 1 mg, twice a day, after that), and 2 mg (for smokers of ≤20 cigarettes per day) or 4 mg (>20 cigarettes per day) nicotine chewing gum, all provided for 12 weeks and accompanied by minimal behavioral support (an invitation to join a self-help internet forum). Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was sustained abstinence from smoking at 6 months as validated by an expired-air carbon monoxide reading (<8 parts per million). Participants lost to follow-up were included as nonabstainers. Results: Of 1068 participants, 357 (33.5%) were female, and the mean (SD) age was 33.9 (3.1) years. A total of 409 (38.3%), 409 (38.3%), and 250 (23.4%) participants were randomized to the EC, varenicline, and NRT arms, respectively. The 6-month biochemically validated abstinence rates were 15.7% (n = 64), 14.2% (n = 58), and 8.8% (n = 22) in the EC, varenicline, and NRT study arms, respectively. The quit rate in the EC arm was noninferior to the varenicline arm (absolute risk reduction, 1.47%; 95% CI, -1.41% to 4.34%) and higher than in the NRT arm (odds ratio, 1.92; 95% CI, 1.15-3.21). Treatment adherence was similar in all study arms during the initial 3 months, but 257 participants (62.8%) in the EC arm were still using ECs at 6 months, with no further use in the 2 other study arms. The most common adverse reactions were throat irritation (32 [7.8%]) and mouth irritation (28 [6.9%]) in the EC arm, nausea (36 [8.8%]) in the varenicline arm, and throat irritation (20 [8.0%]) and mouth irritation (22 [8.8%]) in the NRT arm. No serious adverse events were recorded. Conclusions and Relevance: The results of this randomized clinical trial found that when all treatments were provided with minimal behavior support, the efficacy of EC was noninferior to varenicline and superior to nicotine chewing gum. Sepsis-induced acute liver injury (ALI) is common in intensive care units. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) plays a vital role in hepatic fibrosis and steatosis; however, its role in sepsis-induced ALI remains unclear. This study found that hepatic ACE2 expression in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-treated mice significantly decreased 24 h after CLP. ACE2-transgenic (TG) mice exhibited a significant improvement in CLP-induced ALI, accompanied by the inhibition of hepatocyte apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation, while ACE2-knockout mice demonstrated an opposite trend. During sepsis-induced ALI, ACE2-TG could also elevate the Ang-(1-7) and Mas receptor (MasR) levels in liver tissues. Interestingly, the MasR inhibitor A779 abrogated the favorable effects of ACE2 on CLP-induced ALI. In a bone marrow transplantation experiment, the ACE2-TG transplantation group showed significantly improved inflammation and liver dysfunction, less hepatocyte apoptosis, and reduced oxidative stress after CLP compared with the wild-type transplantation group. In contrast, the ACE2-knockout group showed poor inflammatory response and liver dysfunction, significantly more hepatocyte apoptosis, and elevated oxidative stress than the wild-type transplantation group after CLP. ACE2 protects against sepsis-induced ALI by inhibiting hepatocyte apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation via the Ang-(1-7)-Mas receptor axis. Thus, targeting ACE2 may be a promising novel strategy for preventing and treating sepsis-induced ALI.

Sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC), caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, is a major contributor to high mortality. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a crucial component of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), has protective effects against several cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction and heart failure. However, the role of ACE2 in the pathogenesis of SIC and underlying mechanisms remain unknown. The present study was designed to examine the effects of ACE2 activation or inhibition on SIC in C57BL/6 mice. The ACE2 activator diminazene aceturate (DIZE) and ACE2 inhibitor MLN-4760 were applied for treatment. Myocardial function, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, apoptosis and mitochondrial biogenesis were investigated. Major assays were echocardiography, H&E staining, immunofluorescence staining, DHE staining, TUNEL staining, Western blot, qPCR analysis, ELISA and corresponding kits. We confirmed that ACE2 was markedly downregulated in septic heart tissues. Pharmacological activation of ACE2 by DIZE ameliorated cecal ligation puncture (CLP)-induced mortality, cardiac dysfunction, inflammatory response, oxidative stress and the cardiomyocyte apoptosis by promoting MasR-Sirt1-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis. In contrast, SIC was aggravated via inhibiting MasR-Sirt1-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis by the use of ACE2 inhibitor MLN-4760. Consequently, activation of ACE2 may protect against SIC by promoting MasR-Sirt1-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Most laparoscopic surgeries under general anesthesia are performed in noisy environments, although the effect of intraoperative noise reduction on postoperative pain remains uncertain. This study aimed to explore whether postoperative pain could be reduced through the intraoperative use of noise-cancelling headphones. DESIGN: This study was conducted as a prospective parallel-group randomized clinical trial. SETTING: Operating room and surgery room. PATIENTS: Ninety patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia. INTERVENTIONS: In the intervention group, noise-cancelling headphones were used to reduce noise intensity during laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia. MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome was the maximum movement-evoked pain intensity within 24 h post-surgery, measured using a 10-point numeric rating scale. Secondary outcomes included the maximum resting pain score and total opioid consumption during the 24-h period post-surgery. Mean intraoperative noise and the proportion of intraoperative time with noise intensity ≥70 dB were recorded. MAIN RESULTS: The maximum movement-evoked pain score was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (mean score [SD], 2.7 [1.0] and 4.0[1.0], respectively; P < 0.001). The intervention group required significantly fewer opioids than the control group (mean [SD], 44.2 [12.8] and 51.3[17.5] mg, respectively; P = 0.032). In the control group, but not the intervention group, all postoperative pain scores were significantly associated with the proportion of intraoperative time with noise intensity ≥70 dB, which was an independent risk factor for postoperative pain. CONCLUSION: During laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia, intraoperative noise isolation using noise-cancelling headphones is a safe and effective strategy for relieving postoperative pain and decreasing total opioid analgesic consumption.

Leaf nutrient resorption and drought resistance are crucial for the growth and survival of plants. However, our understanding of the relationships between leaf nutrient resorption and plant drought resistance is still limited. In this study, we investigated the nitrogen and phosphorus resorption efficiencies (NRE and PRE), leaf structural traits, leaf osmotic potential at full hydration (Ψosm), xylem water potential at 50% loss of xylem-specific hydraulic conductivity (P50) and seasonal minimum water potential (Ψmin) for 18 shrub and tree species in a semiarid savanna ecosystem, in Southwest China. Our results showed that NRE and PRE exhibited trade-off against drought resistance traits (Ψosm and P50) across woody species. Moreover, this relationship was modulated by leaf structural investment. Species with low structural investment (e.g., leaf mass per area, leaf dry mass content and leaf construction cost [LCC]) tend to have high NRE and PRE, while those with high LCCs show high drought resistance, showing more negative Ψosm and P50.These results indicate that species with a lower leaf structural investment may have a greater need to recycle their nutrients, thus exhibiting higher nutrient resorption efficiencies, and vice versa. In conclusion, nutrient resorption efficiency may be a crucial adaptation strategy for coexisting plants in semiarid ecosystems, highlighting the importance of understanding the complex relationships between nutrient cycling and plant survival strategies.

In conventional message communication systems, the practice of multi-message multi-receiver signcryption communication encounters several challenges, including the vulnerability to Key Generation Center (KGC) attacks, privacy breaches and excessive communication data volume. The KGC necessitates a secure channel to transmit partial private keys, thereby rendering the security of these partial private keys reliant on the integrity of the interaction channel. This dependence introduces concerns regarding the confidentiality of the private keys. Our proposal advocates for the substitution of the KGC in traditional certificateless schemes with blockchain and smart contract technology. Parameters are publicly disclosed on the blockchain, leveraging its tamper-proof property to ensure security. Furthermore, this scheme introduces conventional encryption techniques to achieve user identity privacy in the absence of a secure channel, effectively resolving the issue of user identity disclosure inherent in blockchain-based schemes and enhancing communication privacy. Moreover, users utilize smart contract algorithms to generate a portion of the encrypted private key, thereby minimizing the possibility of third-party attacks. In this paper, the scheme exhibits resilience against various attacks, including KGC leakage attacks, internal privilege attacks, replay attacks, distributed denial of service attacks and Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks. Additionally, it possesses desirable security attributes such as key escrow security and non-repudiation. The proposed scheme has been theoretically and experimentally analyzed under the random oracle model, based on the computational Diffie-Hellman problem and the discrete logarithm problem. It has been proven to possess confidentiality and unforgeability. Compared with similar schemes, our scheme has lower computational cost and shorter ciphertext length. It has obvious advantages in communication and time overhead.

Energy utilization rates have been largely improved thanks to the wide application of smart grids, thereby realizing the reliable, economic and efficient operation of the grids. However, such an application is also accompanied by many security issues. In response to the many problems within existing security schemes, such as not supporting the communication between heterogeneous cryptosystems, low security levels and a low data retrieval efficiency, a heterogeneous signcryption (HSC) scheme that supports a trusted multi-ciphertext equality test (MET) is proposed. The adoption of the HSC helps to identify secure communications from identity-based cryptosystems to certificateless cryptosystem, eliminates the certificate management problems in the traditional public key cryptography scheme, and ensures the confidentiality and authentication of power data. The introduction of the MET technology can avoid the high cost of equality test calculations after grouping ciphertexts in pairs. Using blockchain and smart contract technologies ensure the credibility of test results and eliminates the reliance on trusted cloud servers. Under the random oracle model, on the basis of the bilinear Diffie-Hellman, the computational Diffie-Hellman and the q-strong Diffie-Hellman problems, this paper proves that the scheme proposed herein meets the requirements of indistinguishability and one-way security under adaptive choice ciphertext attacks, and the unforgeability under the adaptive choice message attack. From the findings of the analysis, it has been shown that the proposed scheme satisfies more security attributes and requires lower computational overhead compared to similar schemes.

Keloids are common benign cutaneous pathological fibrous proliferation diseases, which are difficult to cure and easily recur. Studies have shown that fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 (FGFR1) was enhanced in pathological fibrous proliferation diseases, such as cirrhosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), suggesting the FGFR1 pathway has potential for keloid treatment. Derazantinib is a selective FGFR inhibitor with antiproliferative activity in in vitro and in vivo models. The present study determined the effects of derazantinib on human keloid fibroblasts (KFs). Cell viability assay, migration assay, invasion assay, immunofluorescence staining, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western blot analysis, HE staining, Masson staining, and immunohistochemical analysis were used to analyze the KFs and keloid xenografts. In this study, we found that derazantinib inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion, and collagen production of KFs in vitro. The transcription and expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), which is closely related to collagen deposition and tissue fibrosis, was significantly inhibited. Also, derazantinib inhibited the expression of FGFR1 and PAI-1 and reduced the weight of the implanted keloid from the xenograft mice model. These findings suggest that derazantinib may be a potent therapy for keloids via FGFR signaling.
