RESUMEN

Sustainable production of valuable biochemicals and biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass necessitates the development of durable and high-performance catalysts. To assist the next stage catalyst design for hydrothermal treatment of biosugars, this paper provides a critical review of (1) recent advances in biosugar hydrothermal valorization using heterogeneous catalysts, (2) the deactivation process of catalysts based on recycling tests of representative biosugar hydrothermal treatments, (3) state-of-the-art understandings of the deactivation mechanisms of heterogeneous catalysts, and (4) strategies of preparing durable catalysts and the regeneration of deactivated catalysts. Based on the review, challenges and perspectives are proposed. Some remarkable achievements in heterogeneous catalysis of biosugars are highlighted. The understanding of catalyst durability needs to be further increased based on full examination of the catalytic performance based on the conversion of substrates, the yield and selectivity of products. Further, a full examination of the physiochemical changes based on multiple characterization techniques is required to illuminate the relationships between treatment variables and catalyst durability. Collectively, a clear understanding of the relationships between chemical reaction pathways, treatment variables and the physiochemistry of catalysts is encouraged to be gained to advise the development of heterogeneous catalysts for long-term and efficient hydrothermal upgrading of biosugars.

RESUMEN

Carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) family 91 is a novel module primarily associated with glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 43 enzymes. However, our current understanding of its function remains limited. PphXyl43B is a ß-xylosidase/α-L-arabinofuranosidase bifunctional enzyme from physcomitrellae patens XB belonging to the GH43_11 subfamily and containing CBM91 at its C terminus. To fully elucidate the contributions of the CBM91 module, the truncated proteins consisting only the GH43_11 catalytic module (rPphXyl43B-dCBM91) and only the CBM91 module (rCBM91) of PphXyl43B were constructed, respectively. The result showed that rPphXyl43B-dCBM91 completely lost hydrolysis activity against both p-nitrophenyl-ß-D-xylopyranoside and p-nitrophenyl-α-L-arabinofuranoside; it also exhibited significantly reduced activity towards xylobiose, xylotriose, oat spelt xylan and corncob xylan compared to the control. Thus, the CBM91 module is crucial for the ß-xylosidase/α-L-arabinofuranosidase activities in PphXyl43B. However, rCBM91 did not exhibit any binding capability towards corncob xylan. Structural analysis indicated that CBM91 of PphXyl43B might adopt a loop conformation (residues 496-511: ILSDDYVVQSYGGFFT) to actively contribute to the catalytic pocket formation rather than substrate binding capability. This study provides important insights into understanding the function of CBM91 and can be used as a reference for analyzing the action mechanism of GH43_11 enzymes and their application in biomass energy conversion.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ginkgolide Meglumine Injection (GMI) combined with Butylphthalide in the treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS), and provide reference for rational clinical medication. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of science, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP and other databases were searched for published studies on the treatment of AIS with GMI combined with Butylphthalide in both Chinese and English. The search period was from the establishment of the database to July 2023. The included studies that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using RevMan 5.3 software for Meta-analysis. RESULTS: A total of 25 studies involving 2362 patients (experimental group = 1182, control group = 1180) were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that the overall effective rate of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group [RR = 1.21, 95% CI (1.16, 1.26), P< 0.00001]. In addition, compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significant improvement in NIHSS score [SMD = -1.59, % CI (-2.00-1.18), P< 0.00001] and ADL score [SMD = 2.12, 95% CI (1.52, -2.72), P<0.00001], significant decrease in CRP [SMD = -2.24, 95% CI (-3.31, -1.18), P<0.0001] and TNF-α [SMD = -2.74, 95% CI (-4.45, -1.03), P< 0.005] levels, and improvement in plasma viscosity [SMD = -0.86, 95% CI (-1.07, -0.66), P< 0.00001]. However, the influence on homocysteine level remains inconclusive. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups [SMD = 0.95, 95% CI (0.71, 1.28), P> 0.05]. CONCLUSION: GMI combined with Butylphthalide shows good clinical application effects and good safety in the treatment of AIS. However, more large-sample, multicenter, randomized controlled are needed to confirm these findings.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND:Most of the studies on combined orthodontic-orthognathic treatment of skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusions have focused on the improvement of the patient's lateral appearance and recovery in the later stages of the treatment, while there are fewer studies observing the microcosmic nature of the alveolar bone remodeling of the lower anterior teeth. OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of lower anterior tooth decompensation and alveolar bone remodeling in patients with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion before and after orthodontic-orthognathic treatment based on oral X-ray lateral films and oral cone-beam CT. METHODS:From January 2015 to May 2023,15 patients with skeletal class Ⅲ malocclusion who underwent orthodontic-orthognathic surgery at Qingdao Hospital of Rehabilitation University were enrolled. All patients underwent lateral cephalography and cone beam computed tomography before and after treatment.Cephalometric measurement items related to the angle and line distance,lip/lingual bone cracking length(d-La/d-Li)and bone cracking/bone fenestration of the lower anterior teeth before and after treatment were measured. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Lateral X-ray films showed that the amount of alveolar bone remodeling after decompensation of the lower anterior teeth showed significant changes compared to before treatment. The root of the tooth moved significantly towards the center of the alveolar bone, and the specific data was closer to normal data, but there were still some differences compared with normal individuals.Based on the cone-beam CT measurement, the bone cracking/bone fenestration length and width of the alveolar bone were improved in almost all the teeth after orthodontic-orthognathic combined treatment, alveolar bone remodeling in some teeth even reached the level of healthy individuals. Before treatment, most patients often experienced bone fenestration/cracking on the lip/lingual side of the lower incisor due to compensatory tooth growth. However, during the preoperative orthodontic stage, decompensation triggered alveolar bone remodeling and significant changes in tooth angle.Preoperative orthodontic treatment caused the upper anterior teeth to retract and the lower anterior teeth to tilt and control the root, but the amount of decompensation before surgery was often insufficient. In the orthognathic surgery stage, the jaw was removed through the positioning guide plate, the maxilla moved forward, and the mandible retreated.During the postoperative orthodontic process, the effect of fine adjustment was better.Although there is a certain degree of recurrence trend in the position of teeth and jawbones, the postoperative orthodontic treatment is closer to the normal value.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND:Vibration environment can cause spinal injury, especially in patients with scoliosis. At present, there is no information about the inherent mode of the whole spine from T1 to the pelvis in scoliosis patients in the free state. OBJECTIVE:To analyze the dynamic characteristics of the whole spine in patients with scoliosis by the finite element method. METHODS:Based on CT scan images,a three-dimensional finite element model of the T1-pelvic total spine of an 11-year-old patient with thoracolumbar biflexion scoliosis was established, and the Cobb angles of thoracolumbar scoliosis were 36° and 24°,respectively.The mode analysis in the free state of the whole spine was carried out by the finite element method. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The fifteen-order free modes of the spine were extracted, and the dynamic characteristics of the scolio-curved spine were obtained. The resonance frequency distribution of the spine was concentrated. The thoracic vertebra was the most deformed in the whole spine model, and the amplitude of the thoracic vertebra was larger than that of the lumbar vertebra.Modal analysis was used to analyze the vibration characteristics of scoliosis patients in the vibration environment. It is of great significance to determine the natural frequency, vibration mode, and amplitude of scoliosis patients for analyzing the vibration characteristics of scoliosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND:Temporomandibular joint disorders are closely related to high stress in temporomandibular joint. With the change of molar position after tooth reduction extraction, the establishment of new occlusal relationship often leads to the change of internal stress environment of the temporomandibular joint. OBJECTIVE:To analyze the stress distribution of temporomandibular joint in patients undergoing orthodontic reduction tooth extraction with different degrees of molar forward movement using the three-dimensional finite element model of the maxillary complex and temporomandibular joint. METHODS:A case of individual normal occlusal patient was selected from the Orthodontics Department of Qingdao Municipal Hospital,Shandong Province, and the finite element models of 1/3 anterior molar space(extraction of four second premolar teeth)before and after reduction and 2/3 anterior molar space(extraction of 4 second premolar teeth)after reduction were established based on the cone-beam CT and MRI data.ABAQUS software was used to analyze the stress distribution of various parts of the temporomandibular joint during the interposition of tooth tips. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The stress distribution of the condyle, articular disc, and osteoarticular fossa in the model before and after the reduction was basically the same. The stress of the condyle was mainly distributed in the anterior and apical part of the condyle, the stress of the articular disc was mainly distributed in the middle band and lateral part of the articular disc, and the stress of the articular fossa was mainly concentrated in the anterior and apical part of the articular fossa. However, the equivalent stress value of the condyle, articular disc and articular fossa decreased after reduction. After orthodontic reduction extraction, the equivalent stress values of condyle and articular disc in the 1/3 anterior molar space model were smaller than those in the 2/3 anterior molar space model. From the perspective of biomechanics, orthodontic reduction extraction can reduce the stress of the temporomandibular joint and provide a good biomechanical environment.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE To investigate the protective effect and mechanism of quercetin on the cardiac and renal functions of rats with cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) based on the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/nuclear factor kappa- B (NF-κB) signaling pathway. METHODS CRS model of SD rats was induced by left anterior descending coronary artery ligation combined with acute renal ischemia-reperfusion. Model rats were randomly separated into model group, quercetin low-dose group (35 mg/kg), quercetin high-dose group (70 mg/kg), high-dose of quercetin+740Y-P group (70 mg/kg quercetin+3.5 mg/kg PI3K/Akt/ NF-κB signaling pathway activator 740Y-P), with 12 rats in each group. Another 12 normal rats were selected as sham operation group. They were given relevant drugs, once a day, for 14 consecutive days. After administration, the cardiac function indexes [left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), end-diastolic volume (EDV), isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT)] and renal function indicators [blood urea nitrogen (BUN), 24-hour urine protein, and serum creatinine (Scr)] were detected, and fibrosis in the cardiac and renal tissues was observed; the levels of inflammatory indexes [interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)] in the serum and cardiac and renal tissues as well as the expression of PI3K/Akt/NF-κB pathway-related proteins in the cardiac and renal tissues were detected. RESULTS Compared with sham operation group, the levels of BUN, 24-hour urine protein and Scr, collagen volume fraction of cardiac and renal tissues, the levels of IL-1β and TNF-α in serum and cardiac and renal tissues, and the phosphorylation of PI3K, Akt and NF-κB p65 protein in cardiac and renal tissues were increased significantly in model group (P<0.05); the levels of LVEF, IVRT and EDV were reduced significantly (P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the above indexes were reversed significantly in quercetin low-dose and high-dose groups (P<0.05), and the reversal effect was better in the high-dose group (P<0.05). 740Y-P restored the reverse effect of high-dose quercetin on the indexes (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Quercetin can alleviate cardiac and renal fibrosis and function injury, the mechanism of which may be 20232016) associated with inhibiting the activation of the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the association between congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and the adverse outcomes during hospitalization in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI). Methods: This prospective, multicenter observational cohort study was conducted based on the data from the Sino-northern Neonatal Network (SNN). Data of 5 818 VLBWI with birth weight <1 500 g and gestational age between 24-<37 weeks that were admitted to the 37 neonatal intensive care units from January 1st, 2019 to December 31st, 2022 were collected and analyzed. Thyroid function was first screened at 7 to 10 days after birth, followed by weekly tests within the first 4 weeks, and retested at 36 weeks of corrected gestational age or before discharge. The VLBWI were assigned to the CH group or non-CH group. Chi-square test, Fisher exact probability method, Wilcoxon rank sum test, univariate and multivariate Logistic regression were used to analyze the relationship between CH and poor prognosis during hospitalization in VLBWI. Results: A total of 5 818 eligible VLBWI were enrolled, with 2 982 (51.3%) males and the gestational age of 30 (29, 31) weeks. The incidence of CH was 5.5% (319 VLBWI). Among the CH group, only 121 VLBWI (37.9%) were diagnosed at the first screening. Univariate Logistic regression analysis showed that CH was associated with increased incidence of extrauterine growth retardation (EUGR) (OR=1.31(1.04-1.64), P<0.05) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) of stage Ⅲ and above (OR=1.74(1.11-2.75), P<0.05). However, multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed no significant correlation between CH and EUGR, moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, grade Ⅲ to Ⅳ intraventricular hemorrhage, neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis in stage Ⅱ or above, and ROP in stage Ⅲ or above (OR=1.04 (0.81-1.33), 0.79 (0.54-1.15), 1.15 (0.58-2.26), 1.43 (0.81-2.53), 1.12 (0.70-1.80), all P>0.05). Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between CH and in-hospital adverse outcomes, possibly due to timely diagnosis and active replacement therapy.

RESUMEN

Developing a highly efficient photocatalyst for energy and environmental applications is urgently required. Herein, graphitic carbon nitride (CN) coupled with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) (denoted as MCC-X/CN) shows excellent photocatalytic performance for tetracycline (TC) degradation and H2 evolution. And the optimized MCC-0.05/CN shows an improved TC degradation rate (Kapp = 0.019 min-1) and H2 evolution rate (642.71 µmol g-1 h-1), which are 1.9 and 22 times higher than those of pure CN, respectively. This improvement primarily results from hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) between CN and MCC, which enables excellent charge separation and migration, leading to the outstanding photoelectrochemical properties of MCC-0.05/CN.

RESUMEN

Low-grade heat exists ubiquitously in the environment, and gel-state thermogalvanic cells (GTCs) can directly convert thermal energy into electricity by a redox reaction. However, their low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties are still insufficient for their potential applications. Here, we designed a bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofiber-macromolecular entanglement network to balance the GTC's thermopower and mechanical properties. Therefore, the BC-GTC shows a Seebeck coefficient of 3.84 mV K-1, an ionic conductivity of 108.5 mS cm-1, and a high specific output power density of 1760 µW m-2 K-2, which are much higher than most current literature. Further connecting 15 units of BC-GTCs, the output voltage of 3.35 V can be obtained at a temperature gradient of 65 K, which can directly power electronic devices such as electronic calculators, thermohydrometers, fans, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This work offers a promising method for developing high-performance and durable GTC in sustainable green energy.

RESUMEN

Plywood is widely used in construction, such as for flooring and interior walls, as well as in the manufacture of household items such as furniture and cabinets. Such items are made of wood veneers that are bonded together with adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins1,2. Researchers in academia and industry have long aimed to synthesize lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives using biomass-derived lignin, a phenolic polymer that can be used to substitute the petroleum-derived phenol3-6. However, lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives are less attractive to plywood manufacturers than urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins owing to their appearance and cost. Here we report a simple and practical strategy for preparing lignin-based wood adhesives from lignocellulosic biomass. Our strategy involves separation of uncondensed or slightly condensed lignins from biomass followed by direct application of a suspension of the lignin and water as an adhesive on wood veneers. Plywood products with superior performances could be prepared with such lignin adhesives at a wide range of hot-pressing temperatures, enabling the use of these adhesives as promising alternatives to traditional wood adhesives in different market segments. Mechanistic studies indicate that the adhesion mechanism of such lignin adhesives may involve softening of lignin by water, filling of vessels with softened lignin and crosslinking of lignins in adhesives with those in the cell wall.

RESUMEN

Biobased furfural is a sustainable alternative to petrochemical intermediates for bulk chemicals and fuel production. However, existing methods for the conversion of xylose or lignocelluloses in mono-/bi-phasic systems to furfural involve non-selective sugar isolation or lignin condensation, limiting the valorisation of lignocelluloses. Herein, we used diformylxylose (DFX), a xylose derivative that is formed during the lignocellulosic fractionation process with formaldehyde protection, as a substitute for xylose to produce furfural in biphasic systems. Under kinetically optimized conditions, over 76 mol% of DFX could be converted to furfural in water-methyl isobutyl ketone system at a high reaction temperature with a short reaction time. Finally, isolation of xylan in eucalyptus wood as DFX with formaldehyde protection followed by converting DFX in a biphasic system gave a final furfural yield of 52 mol% (on the basis of xylan in wood), which was more than two times of that without formaldehyde. Combined with the value-added utilization of formaldehyde-protected lignin, this study would enable the full and efficient utilization of lignocellulosic biomass components and further improve the economics of the formaldehyde protection fractionation process.
