Leishmaniasis is an important travel-related parasitic infection in the United States. Treatment regimens vary by Leishmania species and require an accurate diagnosis. The sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic methods depend on the type and condition of specimen analyzed. To identify the best algorithm for detection of parasites in fresh and fixed tissue samples, we evaluated parasite cultures, two PCR methods, and Leishmania immunohistochemistry (IHC) in samples received by the CDC from 2012 through 2019. The sensitivity and specificity of IHC assays were evaluated in fresh specimens tested. Diagnostic accuracy for formalin-fixed tissue was evaluated by using PCR-based methods and IHC. Of 100 suspected cases with fresh tissue available, Leishmania spp. infection was identified by PCR in 56% (56/100) of specimens; from these, 80% (45/56) were positive by parasite culture and 59% (33/56) by IHC. Of 420 possible cases where only fixed specimens were available, 58% (244/420) were positive by IHC and/or PCR. Of these, 96% (235/420) were positive by IHC and 84% (204/420) by PCR-based methods. Overall parasite detection using all methodologies was similar for fresh and formalin-fixed tissue specimens (56% versus 58%, respectively). Although PCR-based methods were superior for diagnosis of leishmaniasis and species identification in fresh samples, IHC in combination with PCR increased the accuracy for Leishmania spp. detection in fixed samples. In conclusion, PCR is the most effective method for detecting Leishmania infection in fresh tissue samples, whereas for formalin-fixed samples, IHC and PCR-based methods should be used in combination.

AIM: To test the association between sociodemographic and social characteristics with COVID-19 cases and deaths in small and large Brazilian cities. METHODS: This ecological study included COVID-19 data available in State Health Secretaries (managed by brasil.io API) and three national databases (IBGE, DATASUS and Embrapa). Temporal spread of COVID-19 in Brazil during the first year considered as outcome: a) days until 1st case in each city since 1st in the country; b) days until 1,000 cases/100,000 inhabitants since 1st case in each city; c) days until 1st death until 50 deaths/100,000 inhabitants. Covariates included geographic region, city social and environmental characteristics, housing conditions, job characteristics, socioeconomic and inequalities characteristics, and health services and coverage. The analysis were stratified by city size into small (<100,000 inhabitants) and large cities (≥100,00 inhabitants). Multiple linear regressions were performed to test associations of all covariates to adjust to potential confounders. RESULTS: In small cities, the first cases were reported after 82.2 days and 1,000 cases/100,000 were reported after 117.8 days, whereas in large cities these milestones were reported after 32.1 and 127.7 days, respectively. For first death, small and large cities took 121.6 and 36.0 days, respectively. However, small cities were associated with more vulnerability factors to first case arrival in 1,000 cases/100,000 inhabitants, first death and 50 deaths/100,000 inhabitants. North and Northeast regions positively associated with faster COVID-19 incidence, whereas South and Southeast were least. CONCLUSION: Social and built environment characteristics and inequalities were associated with COVID-19 cases spread and mortality incidence in Brazilian cities.

The leading cause of death among patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is cardiovascular disease. A significant percentage of MASLD patients develop heart failure driven by functional and structural alterations in the heart. Previously, we observed cardiac dysfunction in hepatocyte-specific peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha knockout (Ppara HepKO), a mouse model that exhibits hepatic steatosis independent of obesity and insulin resistance. The goal of the present study was to determine mechanisms that underlie hepatic steatosis-induced cardiac dysfunction in Ppara HepKO mice. Experiments were performed in 30-week-old Ppara HepKO and littermate control mice fed regular chow. We observed decreased cardiomyocyte contractility (0.17 ± 0.02 vs. 0.24 ± 0.02 µm, p < 0.05), increased cardiac triglyceride content (0.96 ± 0.13 vs. 0.68 ± 0.06 mM, p < 0.05), collagen type 1 (4.65 ± 0.25 vs. 0.31 ± 0.01 AU, p < 0.001), and collagen type 3 deposition (1.32 ± 0.46 vs. 0.05 ± 0.03 AU, p < 0.05). These changes were associated with increased apoptosis as indicated by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling staining (30.9 ± 4.7 vs. 13.1 ± 0.8%, p < 0.006) and western blots showing increased cleaved caspase-3 (0.27 ± 0.006 vs. 0.08 ± 0.01 AU, p < 0.003) and pro-caspase-3 (5.4 ± 1.5 vs. 0.5 ± 0.3 AU, p < 0.02), B-cell lymphoma protein 2-associated X (0.68 ± 0.07 vs. 0.04 ± 0.04 AU, p < 0.001), and reduced B-cell lymphoma protein 2 (0.29 ± 0.01 vs. 1.47 ± 0.54 AU, p < 0.05). We further observed elevated circulating natriuretic peptides and exercise intolerance in Ppara HepKO mice when compared to controls. Our data demonstrated that lipotoxicity, and fibrosis underlie cardiac dysfunction in MASLD.

Urban parks are not only important for the wellbeing of the human population, but are also widely considered to be potentially important sites for the conservation of biodiversity. However, they may offer risk parasitic infections, such as schistosomiasis and fascioliasis, which are both transmitted by freshwater snails. The present study investigated the occurrence of freshwater gastropods in urban parks of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, and their possible infection by helminths of medical-veterinary importance. Gastropods were collected from six parks (2021 - 2022) and examined for the presence of larval helminths. In all, 12 gastropod species from different families were collected: Ampullariidae, Assimineidae, Burnupidae, Lymnaeidae, Physidae, Planorbidae, Succineidae, and Thiaridae. The parasitological examination revealed cercaria of three types in five snail species, with the Pleurolophocerca cercariae type in Melanoides tuberculata (the most abundant species), Echinostoma cercariae in Physella acuta and Pomacea maculata, and Virgulate cercariae, in Pomacea sp. and Pomacea maculata. None of the Biomphalaria tenagophila and Pseudosuccinea columella (the most frequent species) specimens were parasitized by Schistosoma mansoni or Fasciola hepatica, respectively. Even so, some parks may represent a considerable potential risk for transmission of both Schistosoma mansoni and Fasciola hepatica, given the presence of these gastropod vectors and the frequent contact of visitors with the waterbodies.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and limb amputation are frequent complications of diabetes that cannot always be explained by blood glucose control. Metabolomics is a science that is currently being explored in the search for biomarkers or profiles that identify clinical conditions of interest. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze, using a metabolomic approach, peripheral blood samples from type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) individuals, compared with those with diabetic retinopathy and limb amputation. METHODS: The sample consisted of 128 participants, divided into groups: control, DM2 without DR (DM2), non-proliferative DR (DRNP), proliferative DR (DRP), and DM2 amputated (AMP). Metabolites from blood plasma were classified by spectra using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and the metabolic routes of each group using metaboanalyst. RESULTS: We identified that the metabolism of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan was discriminant for the DRP group. Histidine biosynthesis, on the other hand, was statistically associated with the AMP group. The results of this work consolidate metabolites such as glutamine and citrulline as discriminating for DRP, and the branched-chain amino acids as important for DR. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrate the relationship between the metabolism of ketone bodies, with acetoacetate metabolite being discriminating for the DRP group and histidine being a significant metabolite in the AMP group, when compared to the DM2 group.

PURPOSE: Although bariatric surgery is an effective intervention for obesity, it comes with risks such as early postoperative bleeding (EPB). Identifying preoperative risk factors for this complication can help patients' risk stratification and optimization. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to find predictors for early postoperative bleeding after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review, searching PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science until November 2023. We performed a random-effects meta-analysis to explore preoperative risk factors associated with early postoperative bleeding after RYGB. Sources of heterogeneity were explored by leave-one-out analyses. RESULTS: 23 studies were included, comprising 232,488 patients. Male gender (meta-analytical RR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.21-1.66, I2 = 18%, Q Cochran test p-value = 0.29) and revisional surgery (meta-analytical RR = 1.35, 95%CI = 1.12-1.62, I2 = 22%, Q Cochran test p = 0.21) were associated with higher risk of EPB. On average, patients with EPB were older than the remainder (MD for the mean age = 2.82 years, 95%CI = 0.97-4.67, I2 = 0.00%, Q Cochran test p = 0.46). Except for hypertension (meta-analytical RR = 1.33, 95%CI = 1.02-1.73, I2 = 66%, Q Cochran test p < 0.0001), comorbidities were not associated with a higher risk of EPB. CONCLUSION: Preoperative risk factors, including age, gender, hypertension, and revisional bariatric surgery, are associated with early postoperative bleeding after RYGB. Further primary studies, with higher methodological quality, are required to detail more risk factors.

Results: The study cohort comprised five patients, each presenting with unilateral high axial myopia and classic clinical features of HES, including large angle esotropia, hypotropia, and restricted abduction and supraduction. All patients displayed evident superotemporal globe prolapse on MRI imaging, corresponding to the downward displacement of the LR muscle and medial shift of the SR muscle.Following the surgical procedure, all patients demonstrated significant improvements in both vertical and horizontal deviations, effectively addressing the primary clinical manifestations of HES.Conclusions: In the management of HES, several surgical approaches have been explored, yielding mixed results. Our study, employing the technique of partial muscle splitting and scleral fixation, offers a promising avenue for effectively addressing this challenging condition. By adapting the full loop myopexy technique originally proposed by Yokoyama et al. we achieved satisfactory ocular alignment in all five patients. Notably, this approach mitigates the risk of anterior segment ischemia by preserving the unsecured portions of the SR and LR muscles along with MR retroequatorial myopexy.These findings support the consideration of this surgical technique as a safe and effective option for managing HES, providing both cosmetic and functional improvements to afflicted individuals.

ViralFlow v1.0 is a computational workflow developed for viral genomic surveillance. Several key changes turned ViralFlow into a general-purpose reference-based genome assembler for all viruses with an available reference genome. New virus-agnostic modules were implemented to further study nucleotide and amino acid mutations. ViralFlow v1.0 runs on a broad range of computational infrastructures, from laptop computers to high-performance computing (HPC) environments, and generates standard and well-formatted outputs suited for both public health reporting and scientific problem-solving. BACKGROUND: Walking/run promotes greater post-exercise hypotension (PEH) than resistance exercise (RE) which can be associated nitric oxide production. Then, we investigated if adding walking between RE increases PEH. METHODS: Thirteen hypertensive women (48 ± 1.9 years; 26.8 ± 0.3 kg/m2) performed five experimental sessions: 1-traditional RE with passive interval (PIBS); 2-RE with active interval between sets (AIBS); 3-RE with active interval between exercises (AIEX); 4-aerobic exercise (AE); 5-no exercise. Blood pressure was measured before and immediately after exercise and every 10 min of a 60-min post-exercise recovery period. Plasma nitrite (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were also measured. RESULTS: AIBS, AIEX, and AE sessions promoted systolic PEH (12 ± 1.53; 16 ± 2.13; 18 ± 1.34 mmHg, respectively) and diastolic PEH (8 ± 1.38; 8 ± 0.79; 8 ± 0.58 mmHg). In AIBS, AIEX and AE sessions, significant PEH was noted at 10 or 20 min; in PIBS, PEH was significant only at 40 min. In the PIBS session, NO did not change, but presented higher values after AIBS, AIEX and AE sessions. MDA showed no changes between sessions. CONCLUSIONS: Passive or active intervals in resistance exercise promote PEH in hypertensive women. Active intervals shorten the PEH onset time as additional benefit.

To assist in the conservation of collared peccary, it is important to strengthen semen processing protocols. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different commercial extenders (BTS; NUTRIXcell+ and PRIMXcell Ultra) and TRIS + egg yolk on the functional and morphological aspects of collared peccary semen stored at 17 °C for 48 hours. Ten ejaculates obtained by electroejaculation were divided into 4 aliquots and diluted in the respective extenders, then stored in a biological incubator at 17 °C for 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours. The samples were evaluated for kinetic parameters, membrane functionality, membrane integrity, mitochondrial activity, morphology, and sperm-binding capacity. At the end of storage (48 h), promising results were found for motility parameters, with TRIS + egg yolk (71.0 ± 4.6%) being more efficient than NUTRIXcell+ (38.9 ± 10.9%) (P < 0.05) and similar to BTS (42.9 ± 11.9%) and PRIMXcell Ultra (46.8 ± 10.8%). The results for membrane integrity and mitochondrial activity were around ∼30-50%, with TRIS being the only extender to preserve both parameters (58.9 ± 5.3 and 59.2 ± 5.6%) for up to 48 hours, respectively (P < 0.05). Finally, the extenders could guarantee 60% membrane functionality and ∼ 60-70% normal sperm morphology, as well as similar binding capacity among the groups. In conclusion, TRIS + egg yolk is effective in preserving the sperm parameters of collared peccary semen at 17 °C for 48 hours, while PRIMXcell Ultra and BTS are viable alternatives for this purpose.

SARS-CoV-2 virus emerged as a new threat to humans and spread around the world, leaving a large death toll. As of January 2023, Brazil is among the countries with the highest number of registered deaths. Nonpharmacological and pharmacological interventions have been heterogeneously implemented in the country, which, associated with large socioeconomic differences between the country regions, has led to distinct virus spread dynamics. Here, we investigate the spatiotemporal dispersion of SARS-CoV-2 lineages in the Pernambuco state (Northeast Brazil) throughout the distinct epidemiological scenarios that unfolded in the first 2 years of the pandemic. We generated a total of 1,389 new SARS-CoV-2 genomes from June 2020 to August 2021. This sampling captured the arrival, communitary transmission, and the circulation of the B1.1, B.1.1.28, and B.1.1.33 lineages; the emergence of the former variant of interest P.2; and the emergence and fast replacement of all previous variants by the more transmissible variant of concern P.1 (Gamma). Based on the incidence and lineage spread pattern, we observed an East-to-West to inner state pattern of transmission, which is in agreement with the transmission of more populous metropolitan areas to medium- and small-size country-side cities in the state. Such transmission patterns may be partially explained by the main routes of traffic across municipalities in the state. Our results highlight that the fine-grained intrastate analysis of lineages and incidence spread can provide actionable insights for planning future nonpharmacological intervention for air-borne transmissible human pathogens.IMPORTANCEDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil was one of the most affected countries, mainly due its continental-size, socioeconomic differences among regions, and heterogeneous implementation of intervention methods. In order to investigate SARS-CoV-2 dynamics in the state of Pernambuco, we conducted a spatiotemporal dispersion study, covering the period from June 2020 to August 2021, to comprehend the dynamics of viral transmission during the first 2 years of the pandemic. Throughout this study, we were able to track three significant epidemiological waves of transmission caused by B1.1, B.1.1.28, B.1.1.33, P.2, and P.1 lineages. These analyses provided valuable insights into the evolution of the epidemiological landscape, contributing to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of virus transmission during the early years of the pandemic in the state of Pernambuco.

We verified the possibility of cooling peccary semen for 4, 24, and 48 h before cryopreservation, using different dilution media (TRIS + egg yolk (20%) and PRIMXcell Ultra). Ten ejaculates were divided equally into six aliquots and then diluted. Two aliquots were stored in a biological incubator (4 h), and the remaining aliquots were stored in a commercial container, the Botutainer® (24 and 48 h), both at 5 °C. The samples were cryopreserved and then evaluated for kinetic parameters, functionality, integrity, mitochondrial activity, morphology, and sperm binding capacity. After thawing, samples diluted in TRIS showed total motility of 43.4 ± 6.8%, 48.4 ± 6.2%, and 38.6 ± 5.0% after cooling for 4, 24, and 48 h before cryopreservation, respectively. Such results are significantly greater than those achieved with the use of PRIMXcell diluent for 4 (8.3 ± 2.8%), 24 (4.7 ± 1.4%), and 48 h (4.8 ± 2.9%) storage (p < 0.05). Furthermore, TRIS provided better preservation of sperm membrane integrity when samples were cooled for 24 h (44.5 ± 4.7%) before cryopreservation compared to those samples diluted in PRIMXcell Ultra stored for 24 (25.7 ± 4.0%) and 48 h (25.2 ± 4.0%) before freezing (p < 0.05). In summary, we suggest TRIS diluent + egg yolk (20%) as an effective option to allow semen to cool for 24 or 48 h in a transport container before cryopreservation.

Although obesity is recognized as a risk factor for cardiorenal and metabolic diseases, the impact of parental obesity on the susceptibility of their offspring to renal injury at adulthood is unknown. We examined the impact of parental obesity on offspring kidney function, morphology, and markers of kidney damage after acute kidney injury (AKI). Offspring from normal (N) diet-fed C57BL/6J parents were fed either N (NN) or a high-fat (H) diet (NH) from weaning until adulthood. Offspring from obese H diet-fed parents were fed N (HN) or H diet (HH) after weaning. All offspring groups were submitted to bilateral AKI by clamping the left and right renal pedicles for 30 min. Compared with male NH and NN offspring from lean parents, male HH and HN offspring from obese parents exhibited higher kidney injury markers such as urinary, renal osteopontin, plasma creatinine, urinary albumin excretion, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels, and worse histological injury score at 22 wk of age. Only albumin excretion and NGAL were elevated in female HH offspring from obese parents compared with lean and obese offspring from lean parents. We also found an increased mortality rate and worse kidney injury scores after AKI in male offspring from obese parents, regardless of the diet consumed after weaning. Female offspring were protected from major kidney injury after AKI. These results indicate that parental obesity leads to increased kidney injury in their offspring after ischemia-reperfusion in a sex-dependent manner, even when their offspring remain lean.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Offspring from obese parents are more susceptible to kidney injury and worse outcomes following an acute ischemia-reperfusion insult. Male, but not female, offspring from obese parents exhibit increased blood pressure early in life. Female offspring are partially protected against major kidney injury induced by ischemia-reperfusion.

Introducción: La pandemia de COVID-19 ha generado la necesidad de ajustes y adaptaciones en diversas áreas, desde el comportamiento hasta la normativa, con grandes repercusiones en términos de salud pública. Objetivo: Comparar los consumos promedio mensuales (CPM) de medicamentos de control especial utilizados para la salud mental antes y durante la pandemia en una Unidad Básica de Salud (UBS) en el Distrito Federal, Brasil. Métodos: Los consumos se obtuvieron a través del sistema de gestión de inventarios local y el CPM (±desviación estándar) se calculó sin tener en cuenta los meses de desabastecimiento, considerando el período de 2020 a 2022. Como parámetro comparativo, se utilizó el CPM±DE de 2019. Resultados: Se analizaron los consumos de 32 medicamentos, siendo la mayoría antiepilépticos (N=10; 31,2 %), antidepresivos (N=10; 31,2 %) y antipsicóticos (N=8; 25,0 %). Se observó que más de la mitad de los medicamentos analizados (n=18; 56,3 %) mantuvieron un aumento en el consumo a lo largo de los años de la pandemia. Conclusión: Hubo una variación significativa en el consumo de medicamentos sujetos a control especial en la UBS durante la pandemia. Estos resultados pueden estar asociados a diversos factores, como el aumento de los cuadros clínicos que justifican su prescripción, en línea con la literatura actual sobre el impacto potencial del aislamiento social y las medidas tomadas por las autoridades competentes para contener la propagación del virus SARS-COV-2. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has generated the need for adjustments and adaptations in various areas, from behaviour to regulations, with significant repercussions in terms of public health. Objective: To compare the monthly average consumption (MAC) of special control medications used for mental health before and during the pandemic in a Basic Health Unit (UBS) in the Federal District, Brazil. Methods: Consumption data were obtained through the local inventory management system, and the MAC (±stan-dard deviation) was calculated excluding months of stockouts, considering the period from 2020 to 2022. The MAC±SD of 2019 was used as a comparative parameter. Results: Consumption of 32 medications was analyzed, with the majority being antiepileptics (N=10; 31.2 %), anti-depressants (N=10; 31.2 %), and antipsychotics (N=8; 25.0 %). It was observed that more than half of the analyzed medications (n=18; 56.3 %) maintained an increase in consumption throughout the pandemic years. Conclusion: There was a significant variation in the consumption of special control medications at the UBS during the pandemic. These results may be associated with various factors, such as the increase in clinical conditions justi-fying their prescription, in line with current literature on the potential impact of social isolation and measures taken by competent authorities to contain the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the influence of the BsmI polymorphism of the vitamin D receptor gene on vitamin D levels, and inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in patients with Cystic Fibrosis supplemented with cholecalciferol megadose. METHODS: We performed a single-arm, non-randomized pre- and post-study of 17 patients aged 5 to 20 years with cystic fibrosis diagnosed with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency 25-hydroxy vitamin< 30 ng/mL. Individuals were genotyped for the BsmI polymorphism of the vitamin D receptor gene and all received cholecalciferol supplementation of 4,000 IU daily for children aged 5 to 10 years and 10,000 IU for children over 10 years of age for 8 weeks. Interviews were conducted with personal data, sun exposure, anthropometric and blood samples of 25-hydroxy vitamin parathormone, serum calcium, ultrasensitive C-reactive protein, alpha 1 acid glycoprotein, total antioxidant capacity, malondialdehyde and kidney and liver function. Inter- and intra-group assessment was assessed by paired t-test Anova test or its non-parametric counterparts. RESULTS: The individuals were mostly male and reported no adverse effects from the use of supplementation, 64 % had 25-hydroxy vitamin levels >30 ng/mL. Patients with BB and Bb genotypes showed increased serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin. The group with BB genotype showed a reduction in alpha 1 acid glycoprotein. And individuals with the bb genotype had high levels of malondialdehyde compared to the pre-intervention time. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that variations of the BsmI polymorphism of the vitamin D receptor gene have different responses in vitamin D levels and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.

Establishing new somatic cell cultures has raised significant attention as an effective and convenient way to preserve genetic samples for different applications. Although many lines have been established in model animals, none derived from six-banded armadillo species is currently available. We report the successful isolation and characterization of fibroblasts from six-banded armadillos, evaluating the cell quality after extended culture and cryopreservation. Initially, we collected ear skin from five captive adult individuals and identified fibroblast lines by morphology, karyotyping, and immunophenotyping assays. The isolated fibroblasts were evaluated after several passages (fourth, seventh, and tenth passages) and cryopreservation by slow freezing. Cell morphology, viability, metabolism, proliferative activity, mitochondrial membrane potential, and apoptosis levels were analyzed. The skin explants had great adhesion, and cell outgrowth could be seen after 3-6 d. The cells were verified as fibroblasts at the fourth passage by vimentin expression and normal karyotype (2n = 58). The viability remained high (> 87%) and constant from the fourth to the tenth passage (p > 0.05). The passages did not change the cell morphology and metabolic and growth rates. Moreover, cryopreservation did not affect most evaluated parameters; post-thawed cells maintained their viability, growth, metabolism, and apoptosis levels. Nevertheless, cryopreservation increased mitochondrial membrane permeability and cell population doubling time compared to non-cryopreserved cells (p < 0.05). In summary, viable fibroblasts can be obtained from six-banded armadillo skin while conserving their quality as the number of passages increases and featuring few changes after cryopreservation.

Cajuína is a processed drink derived from cashew and is widely consumed in the northeast region of Brazil. This study evaluated the effect of a cajuína-based hydroelectrolytic drink on the aerobic performance and hydration status of recreational runners. Seventeen males (31.9 ± 1.6 years, 51.0 ± 1.4 ml/kg/min) performed three time-to-exhaustion running sessions on a treadmill at 70% VO2max, ingesting cajuína hydroelectrolytic drink (CJ), high carbohydrate commercial hydroelectrolytic drink (CH) and mineral water (W) every 15 min during the running test. The participants ran 80.3 ± 8.4 min in CJ, 70.3 ± 6.8 min in CH and 71.8 ± 6.9 min in W, with no statistical difference between procedures. Nevertheless, an effect size of η2 = 0.10 (moderate) was observed. No statistical difference was observed in the concentrations of sodium, potassium, and osmolality in both serum and urine between the three conditions. However, the effect size was moderate (urine sodium) and high (serum sodium, potassium, and osmolality). Urine specific gravity, sweating rate and heart rate were not significantly different between drinks. The cajuína-based hydroelectrolytic drink promotes similar effects compared to commercial hydroelectrolytic drink and water, considering specific urine gravity, heart rate, sweating, and time to exhaustion in recreational runners.

Loss of an upper limb exerts a negative influence on an individual's ability to perform their activities of daily living (ADLs), reducing quality of life and self-esteem. A prosthesis capable of performing basic ADLs functions has the capability of restoring independence and autonomy to amputees. However, current technologies present in robotic prostheses are based on rigid actuators with several drawbacks, such as high weight and low compliance. Recent advances in robotics have allowed for the development of flexible actuators and artificial muscles to overcome the limitations of rigid actuators. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) consist of a thin elastomer membrane arranged between two compliant electrodes capable of changing dimensions when stimulated with an electrical potential difference. In this work, we present the design and testing of a finger prosthesis driven by two DEAs arranged as agonist-antagonist pairs as artificial muscles. The soft actuators are designed as fiber-constrained dielectric elastomers (FCDE), enabling displacement in just one direction as natural muscles. The finger prosthesis was designed and modeled to show bend movement using just one pair of DEAs and was made of PLA in an FDM 3D printer to be lightweight. The experimental results show great agreement with the proposed model and indicate that the proposed finger prosthesis is promising in overcoming the limitations of the current rigid based actuators.

AIM: This study reports the bilateral association of Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia in monozygotic twins subsequently diagnosed with Wilms tumour (WAGR syndrome). METHODS: Two monozygotic female twins were referred at age 2 months with bilateral corneal opacity. A diagnosis of Peters' anomaly associated to aniridia was made in both eyes of both twins. Physical examination and ultrasonography were carried out at 12 months of age to explore the possibility of WAGR-related anomalies, specifically Wilms tumour. DNA were isolated and subjected to whole exome sequencing. RESULTS: Peters' anomaly associated to aniridia in both eyes as well as bilateral Wilms tumour in both children were diagnosed. Exome analyses showed a large heterozygous deletion encompassing 6 648 473 bp in chromosome 11p13, using Integrative Genomics Viewer and AnnotSV software. CONCLUSION: WAGR syndrome is a rare contiguous gene deletion syndrome with a greater risk of developing Wilms tumour associated with Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia. However, co-occurrence of both anomalies was rarely reported in twins, and never in both eyes of monozygotic twins. Here, we report the bilateral association of Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia in monozygotic twins with WAGR syndrome.
