The circulating micronutrient pattern in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) may impact glycemic control and insulin resistance; however, there is a scarcity of studies that have evaluated the circulating micronutrient pattern in the T2DM population. Therefore, our objective was to identify circulating micronutrient pattern and their association with markers of glycemic control and insulin resistance in individuals with T2DM. We developed a cross-sectional observational study involving adults with T2DM in Sergipe, Brazil. We assessed plasma levels of magnesium, zinc, calcium, potassium, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Additionally, also measured fasting glucose levels, the percentage of glycated hemoglobin (%HbA1c), and calculated the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Patterns of body reserve were established using principal component analysis and categorized into quartiles. Binary logistic regression models were employed. We evaluated 114 individuals (63.7% women), with a median age and body mass index of 49 years and 29.6 kg/m², respectively. Two circulating micronutrient patterns were identified, explaining 62.5% of the variance: Pattern 1 (positive contributions from magnesium, zinc, calcium, and potassium) and Pattern 2 (positive contributions from 25-hydroxyvitamin D and zinc, with a negative contribution from potassium). Lowest quartile for Pattern 1 and Pattern 2 exhibiting a 4.32-fold (p = 0.019) and 3.97-fold (p = 0.038) higher likelihood of increasing HOMA-IR and %HbA1c values, respectively, compared to the larger quartiles. However, no associations were found between these patterns and fasting glucose values. Lowest quartile for both patterns of micronutrients was associated with inadequate metabolic control in individuals with T2DM.

Introduction: Nephelium lappaceum L. (Sapindaceae) is a plant known as rambutan. It is used for various purposes in traditional medicine. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of the ethanol extract of the fruit peel of N. lappaceum (EENL), the mechanisms involved in these effects, and the acute toxicity in zebrafish. Methods: We performed chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, acute toxicity assay in zebrafish, and evaluation in mice submitted to models of nociception and locomotor activity. Results: We identified (epi)-catechin, procyanidin B, and ellagic acid and its derivatives in EENL. We did not find any toxicity in zebrafish embryos incubated with EENL. The locomotor activity of mice submitted to oral pretreatment with EENL was not changed, but it reduced the abdominal constrictions induced by acetic acid, the licking/biting time in both the first and second phase of formalin testing and capsaicin testing, and carrageenan-induced paw mechanical allodynia. Oral pretreatment with EENL increased latency time in the hot plate test. This antinociceptive effect was significantly reversed by naloxone, L-arginine, and glibenclamide respectively showing the participation of opioid receptors, nitric oxide, and KATP channels as mediators of EENL-induced antinociception. Conclusion: EENL causes antinociception with the participation of opioid receptors, nitric oxide, and KATP channels, and is not toxic to zebrafish.

Gentianaceae family (such as Coutoubea spicata) contains iridoids and flavonoids with antidiabetic properties. However, there is no information available about the antidiabetic effects of C. spicata when combined with resistance exercise training (RET). This study evaluated the effects of the ethanolic extract (EE) and ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) of C. spicata on biochemical markers, muscle damage, and oxidative stress in diabetic rats submitted to RET. Alloxan-induced diabetic rats were distributed into 4 groups (each group, n = 8) treated with distilled water (TD), EE, EAF, or metformin and submitted to RET. Two groups without the disease (each group, n = 8) (sedentary control and trained control), as well as a sedentary diabetic group (n = 8) were included. Body weight and glycemia were evaluated weekly. After 30 days, lipid/lipoprotein profile, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, muscle damage ((creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)), and oxidative stress (malondialdehyde (MDA), sulfhydryl groups (SH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power) were evaluated. MDA and SH for pancreas, liver, heart, and muscle were evaluated. C. spicata extract and fraction combined with RET recovered body weight and reduced glycemia, muscle damage (CK: 36.83% and 21.45%; LDH: 49.83% and 68.55%), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (70.63%; 59.18%) and improved redox status (MDA: 50.33%, 39.74%; and SH: 53.97%; 76.41%), respectively, when compared with the TD group. C. spicata plus RET promoted anti-hyperglycemic, lipid-reducing, and antioxidant effects in diabetic rats. Novelty C. spicata presents anti-hyperglycemic and lipid-lowering effects potentiated by RET. C. spicata reduces muscle injury and increases antioxidant defense.

α-Terpineol (TP) is present in a wide range of essential oils of the genus Eucalyptus, with recognized potential for a range of biological effects, such as analgesic. Hence, our study aimed to investigate the effect of TP on cancer pain induced by sarcoma 180 in Swiss mice. Our results showed that TP reduced significantly mechanical hyperalgesia and spontaneous and palpation-induced nociception, improved paw use without reducing tumor growth and grip strength. Importantly, no evident biochemical and hematological toxicity was oberved. Furthermore, TP increased the tissue antioxidant capacity due to ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and glutathione (GSH). TP also reduced inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) immunocontent in the tumors. Molecular docking estimated that TP binds within the same range of iNOS regions (other iNOS inhibitors), such as N-Nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME). These data provide strong evidence that TP may be an interesting candidate for the development of new safe analgesic drugs that are effective for cancer pain control.

We evaluated the effect of the hydroethanolic extract of fruits of Vaccinium macrocarpon (HEVm) in a model of acute pancreatitis (AP) in mice. AP was induced by two injections of L-arginine and animals were treated with HEVm (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, p.o.) or vehicle (saline) every 24 h, starting 1 h after the induction of AP. Phytochemical analysis of the extract and measurement of inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters, as well as abdominal hyperalgesia, were performed. Catechin, epicatechin, rutin, and anthocyanins were identified in HEVm. Treatment with HEVm decreased L-arginine-induced abdominal hyperalgesia (from 48 to 72 h). Also, treatment with HEVm decreased L-arginine-induced pancreatic edema, pancreatic and pulmonary neutrophil infiltration, and levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1ß, and interleukin-6, after 72 h of induction. L-arginine-induced hyperamylasemia and hyperlipasemia were also reduced by the treatment with HEVm in comparison to vehicle-treated group. Moreover, lipoperoxidation, carbonyl radicals, nonprotein sulfhydryl groups, and activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase, but not glutathione peroxidase, were restored by the treatment with HEVm. These results show that treatment with HEVm decreased hyperalgesia and pancreatic/extrapancreatic inflammation and oxidative damage in L-arginine-induced AP, making this extract attractive for future approaches designed to treat this condition.

Rosmarinus officinalis L. phenolic compounds have attracted considerable attention because of their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, including its ability to treat inflammatory disorders. In this work, we investigated the in vivo and in vitro effects of R. officinalis aqueous extract on neutrophil trafficking from the blood into an inflamed tissue, on cell-derived secretion of chemical mediators, and on oxidative stress. Anti-inflammatory activity was investigated using carrageenan-induced inflammation in the subcutaneous tissue of male Wistar rats orally treated with the R. officinalis extract (100, 200, or 400 mg/kg). The leukocyte influx (optical microscopy), secretion of chemical mediators (prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), TNF-α, interleukin 6 (IL-6), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), and cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant 1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), and the anti-oxidative profile (super oxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) spectrophotometry) were quantified in the inflamed exudate. N-Formyl-methionine-leucine-phenylalanine-induced chemotaxis, lipopolysaccharide-induced NO2 (-) production (Greiss reaction), and adhesion molecule expression (flow cytometry) were in vitro quantified using oyster glycogen recruited peritoneal neutrophils previous treated with the extract (1, 10, or 100 µg/mL). Animals orally treated with phosphate-buffered saline and neutrophils incubated with Hank's balanced salt solution were used as control. R. officinalis extract oral treatment caused a dose-dependent reduction in the neutrophil migration as well as decreased SOD, TBARS, LTB4, PGE2, IL-6, and TNF-α levels in the inflamed exudate. In vitro treatment with R. officinalis decreased neutrophil chemotaxis, NO2 (-) production, and shedding of L-selectin and ß2 integrin expressions. Results here presented show that R. officinalis aqueous extract displays important in vivo and in vitro anti-inflammatory actions by blocking pathways of neutrophil migration and secretion, suggesting its therapeutic application to acute inflammatory reactions.

The high intensity physical exercise induces to excessive formation of oxygen reactive species as well as changes in the metabolism of antioxidant nutrients. The zinc, particularly, which is a cofactor of enzymes of antioxidant defense system, seems to have alterations in its metabolic behavior in athletes. This study evaluated the effect of physical exercise on biochemical parameters of zinc and oxidative stress biomarkers of soccer players. A transectional, analytical and experimental study was performed with 20 players from the youth team (basis category sub20) in the first division of the brazilian championship with age between 17 and 19 years, male gender. The analysis of zinc intake, plasmatic and erythrocyte zinc, the activity of superoxide dismutase enzyme, and the plasma malondialdehyde were carried out before and after the match. Players showed zinc intake superior to recommendation. The mean plasmatic zinc was 77.6 ± 9.9 μg/dl pre-match and 68.9 ± 8.2 μg/dl post-match (p<0.05). The mean of erythrocyte zinc did not show significant difference after exercise (p>0.05). The mean plasmatic malondialdehyde was 1.1 ± 0.3 nmol/ml, and 5.5 ± 1.4 nmol/ml pre and post–exercise, respectively (p<0.05). The activity of superoxide dismutase enzyme did not change after 48 hours of the soccer match (p>0.05). High performance athlets like soccer players, show a reduction in zinc concentration and an increase in the plasmatic malondialdehyde. Further investigations using other biomarkers of oxidative stress and/or of inflammation may better clarify the alterations in the metabolic behavior of antioxidant nutrients in soccer players.


O exercício físico de alta intensidade favorece a formação excessiva de espécies reativas de oxigênio assim como distúrbios no metabolismo de nutrientes antioxidantes. O zinco, em particular, que é cofator de enzimas do sistema de defesa antioxidante, parece sofrer alterações no seu comportamento metabólico em atletas. Este estudo avaliou o efeito do exercício físico sobre parâmetros bioquímicos do zinco e marcadores do estresse oxidativo em jogadores de futebol. Estudo transversal, analítico e experimental realizado com 20 jogadores de futebol do time de juniores (categoria de base sub-20) da primeira divisão do campeonato brasileiro com idade entre 17 e 19 anos, do gênero masculino. Foram realizadas análises da ingestão de zinco, zinco plasmático e eritrocitário, atividade da enzima superóxido dismutase e malondialdeído plasmático antes e após a partida. Os jogadores de futebol mostraram ingestão de zinco superior à recomendação. Os valores médios de zinco plasmático foram de 77,6 ± 9,9 μg/dL no período pré-partida e de 68,9 ± 8,2 μg/dL no pós-partida (p<0,05). A média de zinco eritrocitário não mostrou diferença significativa após o exercício (p>0,05). A média do malondialdeído plasmático nos jogadores de futebol foi 1,1 ± 0,3 nmoL/mL e 5,5 ± 1,4 nmoL/mL no pré e pós-exercício, respectivamente (p<0,05). A atividade da enzima superóxido dismutase não alterou após 48 horas da partida de futebol (p>0,05). Atletas de alto rendimento, como jogadores de futebol, apresentam aumento de malondialdeído no plasma e redução nas concentrações de zinco no plasma. Novas investigações utilizando outros biomarcadores do estresse oxidativo e/ou da inflamação podem melhor esclarecer as alterações no comportamento metabólico de nutrientes antioxidantes em jogadores de futebol.

LDL oxidation and oxidative stress are closely related to atherosclerosis. Therefore, natural antioxidants have been studied as promising candidates. In the present study, the LDL oxidation inhibition activity of bioactive compounds from Halimeda incrassata seaweed. associated to antioxidant capacity, was evaluated in vitro. Experimental work was conducted with lyophilized aqueous extract and phenolic-rich fractions of the seaweed and their effect on LDL oxidation was evaluated using heparin-precipitated LDL (hep-LDL) with exposure to Cu2+ ions and AAPH as the free radical generator. H. incrassata had a protective effect for hep-LDL in both systems and the presence of phenolic compounds contributed to the activity where phenolic-rich fractions showed significant capacity for inhibition of oxidation mediated by Cu2+ ions. The observed effect could be related to the antioxidant potential of polar fractions evidenced by reducing activity and DPPH• radical scavenging. The results obtained in vitro further support the antioxidant and LDL oxidation inhibition properties of H. incrassata and further knowledge toward future phytotherapeutic application of the seaweed.


A oxidação da LDL e o estresse oxidativo estão intimamente relacionados com a aterosclerose. Por isso, os antioxidantes naturais têm sido estudados como candidatos promissores. No presente trabalho foi avaliada in vitro a capacidade de inibição da oxidação da LDL pelos compostos bioativos da alga Halimeda incrassata em associação à capacidade antioxidante. O trabalho experimental foi conduzido com extratos polares (extrato aquoso liofilizado e frações ricas em fenólicos) e seu efeito na oxidação da LDL foi avaliado usando LDL precipitada com heparina (hep-LDL), oxidada com íons de Cu2+ e AAPH, como geradores de radicais livres. A H. incrassata apresentou efeito protetor para hep-LDL em ambos sistemas e a presença de compostos fenólicos contribuiu para a atividade em que as frações ricas em fenólicos demonstram capacidade significativa em inibir a oxidação mediada pelos íons de Cu2+. O efeito observado deve estar relacionado com o potencial antioxidante das frações polares medido pela atividade redutora e varredura do radical DPPH. Os resultados obtidos demonstram as propriedades antioxidantes e de inibição da oxidação da LDL da H. incrassata e podem contribuir para as evidências de futuras aplicações fitoterapêuticas desta alga.

Introdução: As doenças crônicas não transmissíveis (DCNT), como o diabetes, apresenta estreita relação com os marcadores do estresse oxidativo e da inflamação. Estes marcadores podem ser modulados pelos compostos bioativos presentes nos alimentos. Os compostos fenólicos presentes no alecrim (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) possuem atividades biológicas importantes, como antioxidante, antiinflamatória, anticarcinogênica, entre outras. Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito dos compostos fenólicos do alecrim (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) na inflamação aguda e sobre os marcadores de estresse oxidativo de ratos diabéticos induzidos por estreptozotocina. Métodos: Extrato aquoso (EA) e frações ricas em compostos fenólicos foram obtidos das folhas de alecrim e avaliados quanto à sua composição em fenólicos e capacidades antioxidante e anti-inflamatória in vitro. Ratos Wistar, machos, foram tratados com EA, fração hidroalcoólica (FHA) ou fração de ácidos fenólicos livres (AFL). O efeito do EA, FHA e AFL foram avaliados em ratos diabéticos. Foi avaliada a atividade anti-inflamatória in vivo do EA nos modelos de inflamação aguda: edema de pata e bolsa de ar. O efeito do EA também foi investigado em células de hepatócitos humano (HepG2). Para análise dos resultados utilizou-se a análise de variância (ANOVA, post-hoc Tukey), adotando como nível de significância p<0,05. Resultados: O EA e suas frações apresentaram alto conteúdo em compostos fenólicos, entre eles os flavonoides. Os ácidos rosmarínico e carnósico foram os compostos majoritários das frações de ácidos fenólicos. A composição em compostos fenólicos contribuiu significativamente para a expressiva capacidade antioxidante e inibitória da lipoxigenase in vitro. O EA de alecrim alterou positivamente a atividade das enzimas antioxidantes, reduziu as concentrações séricas de TNF-α e IL-6; e aumentou níveis de LTB4 em animais diabéticos quando comparado ao grupo controle diabético (D-H2O). A AFL não atenuou os marcadores de estresse...


ntroduction: Non-transmissible chronic diseases, such as diabetes, are strongly associated with oxidative stress and inflammation markers, which are known to be modulated by bioactive compounds found in foods. Polyphenols present in rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) display important biological activities, including among others, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects. Objective: To assess the effects of polyphenols from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) on acute inflammation and oxidative stress markers in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Methods: Aqueous extract and phenolic acid fractions were obtained from rosemary leaves and assayed for their phenolic composition and in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The effects of the aqueous extract (EA), the hydroalcoholic fraction (FHA) and the free phenolic fraction (AFL) were assessed in diabetic male Wistar rats. The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of EA was evaluated against two models of acute inflammation: paw edema and air pouch. The effect of EA was also investigated in human hepatocyte cells (HepG2). Results were compared using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey post-test at a significance level of p<0.05. Results: Polyphenols, mainly flavonoids, occurred in high quantities in EA and its fractions. Rosmarinic and carnosic acids were found chiefly in the phenolic fractions. The rich phenolic composition contributed significantly to the high in vitro antioxidant activity and lipoxygenase inhibiting capacity observed. The rosemary aqueous extract (EA) positively affected antioxidant enzyme activities, reduced serum TNF-α and IL-6 concentrations and elevated LTB4 levels in diabetic rats, compared with those in the diabetic control group (D-H2O). Treatment with AFL did not attenuate the oxidative stress markers altered by diabetes. In the acute inflammation models, paw edema was reduced by EA as successfully as by indomethacin (p>0.05)...

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o efeito do extrato aquoso de alecrim sobre o estresse oxidativo em ratos diabéticos. MÉTODOS: O extrato aquoso de alecrim foi obtido por método sequencial. Os fenólicos totais foram determinados pelo método de Folin Ciocateau e a atividade antioxidante in vitro foi determinada através de três métodos: β-caroteno/ácido linoleico, varredura do radical 2,2 Difenil-1-Picril-hidrazil e oxigen radical absorbance capacity. Ratos Wistar machos foram distribuídos em 5 grupos: controle, diabético, e três grupos de animais diabéticos tratados com extrato aquoso de alecrim em concentrações diferentes: 25, 50 ou 100mg/kg por via oral durante 30 dias. O diabetes foi induzido por estreptozotocina e, no final do experimento, foi coletado sangue para avaliar o percentual de hemoglobina glicada e os tecidos hepático e cerebral para determinação das enzimas antioxidantes: superóxido dismutase, catalase, glutationa peroxidase e glutationa redutase. RESULTADOS: Constatou-se que o extrato aquoso de alecrim apresentou altos teores de compostos fenólicos totais e expressiva atividade antioxidante in vitro nos três métodos de avaliação. O extrato aquoso de alecrim na concentração de 50mg/kg diminuiu o percentual de hemoglobina glicada e aumentou a atividade das enzimas catalase e glutationa peroxidase no fígado, e da superóxido dismutase no cérebro de ratos diabéticos. No entanto, não foi observado efeito dose-resposta nas demais concentrações analisadas. CONCLUSÃO: O extrato aquoso de alecrim apresenta significativa capacidade antioxidante in vitro, atribuída à presença de compostos fenólicos em sua composição. E, quando administrado em ratos na concentração de 50mg/kg, demonstrou-se eficiente na atenuação do estresse oxidativo presente no diabetes experimental.


OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effect of aqueous rosemary extract on the oxidative stress of diabetic rats. METHODS: Aqueous rosemary extract was obtained by the sequential method. Total phenolic content was determined by the Folin Ciocateau method and antioxidant activity in vitro was determined by the following methods: β-carotene/linoleic acid, 2,2 Difenil-1-Picril-hidrazil and oxygen radical absorbance capacity. Male Wistar rats were distributed into 5 groups: control, diabetic, and three groups of diabetic animals treated with aqueous rosemary extract in different concentrations: 25, 50 or 100mg/kg orally for 30 days. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin and, at the end of the experiment, blood was collected to assess the percentage of glycated hemoglobin; liver and brain tissues were collected for the determination of the antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutatione peroxidase and glutatione reductase. RESULTS: Aqueous rosemary extract contains high levels of phenolic compounds and significant total antioxidant activity in vitro according to the three methods. Aqueous rosemary extract at a concentration of 50mg/kg decreased the percentage of glycated hemoglobin and increased the activity of glutatiose peroxidase and catalase enzymes in the liver and superoxide dismutase in the brain of diabetic rats. However, no dose-response effect was observed in the other concentrations. CONCLUSION: Aqueous rosemary extract presented significant antioxidant capacity in vitro attributed to its high phenolic compound content. When administered to rats at a concentration of 50mg/kg, it proved to be efficient against the oxidative stress secondary to experimental diabetes.

O caju (Anacardium occidentale L.) apresenta substâncias fenólicas, as quais são atribuídas propriedades antioxidantes. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho objetivou verificar a capacidade antioxidante em subproduto, ou seja, no bagaço do pedúnculo do caju. O potencial antioxidante do extrato hidroalcoólico (EHAlc) do bagaço do pedúnculo de caju foi avaliado em sistema de varredura do radical 2,2'-difenil-1-picrilhidrazilo (DPPHò) e em ensaio in vivo. No sistema DPPH, o extrato demonstrou atividade antioxidante de cerca de 95% em sua maior concentração (1000 µg/mL). Para o estudo in vivo, foram utilizados ratos Wistar administrando oralmente EHAlc (200 e 400 mg/kg de peso corpóreo) por 30 dias e analisados os tecidos plasmático, hepático e cerebral. Não houve alterações na peroxidação lipídica no plasma e no fígado dos animais tratados comparados ao grupo controle. Contudo, foi observada redução da lipoperoxidação no cérebro dos grupos tratados. Além do mais, neste tecido, os animais tratados apresentaram maior quantidade de ácidos graxos poliinsaturados (AGPI), destacando-se o ácido docosahexaenóico (DHA). Estes resultados indicam que o EHAlc contém antioxidantes naturais efetivos e que podem contribuir na redução da lipoperoxidação e preservação dos AGPICL no tecido cerebral de ratos, dando indícios da capacidade antioxidante do bagaço do pedúnculo de caju CCP-76.


The cashew apple (Anacardium occidentale L.) contains phenolic compounds usually related with antioxidant properties. Then, the aim of this study was to investigate its antioxidant capacity. The antioxidant capacity of the hydroalcoholic extract of the cashew apple pulp (EHAlc.) was assessed for the scavenging of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) by in vitro method and by an in vivo essay. For this essay a 30-day oral (gavage, EHAlc. 200 and 400 mg/kg) study was conducted in Wistar male rats, evaluating hepatic, plasma and brain tissues. In DPPH model, the extract demonstrated antioxidant activity of 95% (largest concentration, 1000 µg/ mL). There were found no relevant peroxidation comparing the treated animals with the control group. However, the treated group presented a lower level of brain lipoperoxidation. Also in the treated animals brain tissue was found the largest amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), mainly docosahexaenoic (DHA). Therefore, the analyzed extract from cashew apple pulp clone CCP-76 contains effective natural antioxidants, responsible for free radical scavenging in vitro and also for decreasing the brain lipoperoxidation and keeping the PUFAS levels in Wistar rats.

A insuficiência renal crônica apresenta alterações metabólicas e nutricionais, estando a desnutrição associada ao aumento da morbimortalidade. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o estado nutricional de pacientes renais crônicos em hemodiálise. Foram selecionados 83 de ambos os sexos, numa faixa etária entre 18 e 90 anos, com um tempo médio de diálise de 120 meses, assistidos na Clínica Nefrológica do Hospital Casa Mater, Teresina - PI. Para avaliação da composição corporal, foram utilizados IMC, prega cutânea triciptal, circunferência do braço e circunferência muscular do braço. A avaliação das dietas foi feita utilizando um recordatório de 24h e a análise por meio de um software. Para determinação do estado nutricional dos pacientes, foram utilizados parâmetros antropométricos e bioquímicos (albumina sérica, hematócrito, hemoglobina, uréia e creatinina urinária). Os valores médios encontrados para o IMC foram de 22,52 +- 3,62 kg/m². O consumo médio de energia e proteína foi de 30,0 +- 12,3 Kcal/Kg/dia e 1,3 g/Kg/dia, respectivamente. O valor médio da albumina foi de 4,5 +-0,9g/dL. A concentração de creatinina na urina dos pacientes do sexo masculino e feminino foi de 8,6 +- 2,6mg/dL e 8,9 +-1,8mg/dL, respectivamente. Os valores médios do hematócrito e hemoglobina foram de 29,9% +- 5,9 e 10,1 +- 2,0g/dL para os homens e 30,8% +- 4,8 e 10,4 +- 1,5g/dL para as mulheres, respectivamente. Concluindo, os pacientes apresentaram alteração do estado nutricional, indicando a necessidade de verificar a terapia nutricional na sua qualidade de vida.


Chronic renal failure presents nutritional and metabolic disorders, malnutrition and is associated with increased mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of patients on hemodialysis. We selected 83 of both sexes, an age range between 18 and 90 years with a mean time of dialysis was 120 months, assisted at the Hospital Clinic Nephrological House Mater, Teresina - PI. To assess body composition, we used BMI, triceps skinfold, arm circumference and arm muscle circumference. The evaluation of the diets was made using a 24-hour recall and analysis by means of a software. To determine the nutritional status of patients, we used anthropometric and biochemical parameters (serum albumin, hematocrit, hemoglobin, urea and urinary creatinine). The average values for BMI were 22.52 +- 3.62 kg/m². The average consumption of energy and protein was 30.0 +- 12.3 kcal/kg/day and 1.3 g/kg/day, respectively. The mean albumin was 4.5 +- 0.9 g/dL. The concentration of creatinine in the urine of males and females was 8.6 +- 2.6 mg/dL and 8.9 +-1.8 mg/dL, respectively. Mean values of hematocrit and hemoglobin were 29.9% +- 5.9 and 10.1 +- 2.0 g/dL for men and 30.8% +- 4.8 and 10.4 +- 1,5 g/dl for women, respectively. In conclusion, the patients showed alterations of nutritional status, indicating the need to check the nutritional quality of their lives.


La insuficiencia renal crónica presenta desnutrición de nutrición y trastornos metabólicos, y se asocia con una mayor mortalidad. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el estado nutricional de los pacientes en hemodiálisis. Se seleccionaron 83 de ambos sexos, un rango de edad entre 18 y 90 años con un tiempo medio de diálisis fue de 120 meses, atendidos en el Hospital Clínico nefrológica Casa Mater, Teresina - PI. Para evaluar la composición corporal, se utilizó el IMC, el pliegue del tríceps, circunferencia del brazo y circunferencia muscular del brazo. La evaluación de las dietas se realizó mediante un recordatorio de 24 horas y el análisis por medio de un software. Para determinar el estado nutricional de los pacientes, utilizando parámetros antropométricos y bioquímicos (albúmina sérica, hematocrito, hemoglobina, urea y creatinina en orina). Los valores promedio de IMC 22,52 +- 3,62 kg/m². El consumo promedio de energía y proteína fue 30,0 +- 12,3 kcal/kg/día y 1,3 g/kg/día, respectivamente. La albúmina media fue de 4,5 +- 0,9 g/dl. La concentración de creatinina en la orina de los machos y las hembras fue de 8,6 +- 2,6 mg/dl y 8,9 +-1,8 mg/dL, respectivamente. Los valores medios de hematócrito y hemoglobina fueron 29,9% +- 5,9 y 10,1 +- 2,0 g/dl para los hombres y el 30,8% +- 4.8 y 10.4 +- 1,5 g/dl en mujeres, respectivamente. En conclusión, los pacientes presentaron alteraciones del estado nutricional, lo que indica la necesidad de comprobar la calidad nutricional de sus vidas.

En la actualidad existe un marcado interés por la búsqueda de antioxidantes de fuentes naturales, incluidas las algas marinas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la composición química y propiedades antioxidantes del alga Bryothamnion triquetrum. Se estudió la composición centesimal y de minerales, identificación de ácidos grasos y sustancias antioxidantes. La composición centesimal es la siguiente: Proteínas (9,5 por ciento), Lípidos (1,3 por ciento), Carbohidratos (5,9 por ciento), Fibras (10,2 por ciento) y Cenizas (43 por ciento). Los resultados de la actividad antioxidante para las diferentes metodologías empleadas fueron: atrapamiento de radicales DPPHò (38 por ciento, 4 mg de liofilizado), beta-Caroteno-Linoleico (12 por ciento, 4 mg de liofilizado), actividad atrapadora de radicales O2ò- (CI50 0,36 mg/mL), de radicales OHò (CI50 2,11 mg/mL) y unión al Fe (CI50 0,37 mg/mL). Las propiedades antioxidantes de esta alga parecen explicarse por la capacidad atrapadora de radicales libres, particularmente relacionada con mecanismos de dismutación de radicales O2ò-, inactivación de radicales OHò y quelación de Fe. En trabajos previos se identificaron ácidos cinámicos y fenólicos como moléculas que pudieran explicar la actividad antioxidante, sin embargo adicionalmente se debe considerar un efecto sumatorio y/o sinérgico de otros componentes antioxidantes del extracto, como los descritos en este trabajo, incluidos minerales, carotenoides y vitamina C.


An increasing interest has been growing during the past years for the search of natural origin antioxidants, particularly those from marine algae. In this context, the main objective of current research was to evaluate the chemical composition and some antioxidant properties of the aqueous extract of the seaweed Bryothamnion triquetrum. The extracts contains: Proteins (9.5 percent), Lipids (1.3 percent), Carbohydrates (5.9 percent), Fibers (10.2 percent) and Ashes (43 percent). In current approach, the following results were obtained for the different procedures assessed: DPPHò radicals scavenging (38 percent for 4 mg of lyophilized); beta-Carotene-Linoleic assay (12 percent for 4 mg of lyophilized); O2ò- radicals scavenging (IC50 0.36 mg/mL); OHò radicals scavenging (IC50 2.11 mg/mL) and iron quelation ability (IC50 0.37 mg/mL). Thus, antioxidant properties of this natural product seem to be related to its ability to scavenge free species. In previous reports of our group, cinnamic and phenolic acids were proposed as at least partially responsible for the antioxidant properties of the extract, but the necessity for the presence of other components was also shown. Then, the antioxidant properties of the extract could be envisioned as the result of the additive and/or synergic effect between phenolic constituents and the other antioxidant components, such as minerals, carotenes and ascorbic acid.
