RESUMEN
One of the main objectives of the National Plan of Prevention is prevention of overweight and obesity. The realization of such plan has been submitted at ASL level mostly to the Food and Nutrition Hygiene Services (SIAN) according to their competences, as well specified by the decree of October 16th 1998, which deals with the collective nutritional prevention and overseeing. In the following sections we present the experiences of some SIANs considered meaningful in order to offer a survey, along the whole country, of what already realised about prevention of the obesity and promotion of correct life styles.

Treatment of acrolein diethyl acetal sulfide 8 with methanesulfenyl bromide at low temperature results in an efficient thiirane ring opening to a halo disulfide 9. The bromine in this halo disulfide is easily substituted by silver acetate, sodium azide, sodium iodide, and silver nitrate. Treatment of 9 with tetrabutylammonium acetate yields a novel dehydrohalogenation product 12. Silica gel converts bromide 9 into a disulfide-substituted version of acrolein 15. The orthogonal-protected version of 2-thioglyceraldehyde 13 can be deprotected to a useful form of this aldehyde.

An outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium belonging to phage type (PT) 193 occurred in autumn 1995 and involved 83 individuals in a large area of Northern Italy (Lombardy Region). Epidemiological and microbiological investigations of strains isolated from clinical and food specimens revealed that the vehicle was a batch of salami, produced on 4 September 1995 by a local firm. The outbreak was contained when the batch was withdrawn from sale. Insufficient ripening of the salami had allowed the salmonella to survive, emphasizing the need to define criteria for the ripening process of foods such as salami.

Haematologic toxicity is the most common adverse effect related to long-term administration of zidovudine (AZT). We evaluated the kinetics of modifications of some haematologic parameters of erythroid series in 65 patients with HIV infection treated with AZT for a mean duration of 7.6 +/- 4.7 months (13 of them with a previous diagnosis of AIDS, 34 with ARC, 18 asymptomatic or with LAS/PGL), in order to correlate the observation and the evolution of these laboratory changes with the onset of severe anaemia. The development of macrocytosis occurs in a large majority of AZT-treated subjects, in spite of folate and vitamin B12 supplementation; the monitoring of erythrocytes distribution according to cellular volume and cellular haemoglobin concentration makes it possible to early recognize the occurrence of modification in erythropoiesis. There is no correlation between an elevated mean corpuscular volume and the development of severe anaemia (Hb less than or equal to 9 g/dl) in an individual patient; a fall in the reticulocyte count appears to be the earliest peripheral blood sign of the development of bone marrow toxicity.

We describe a qualitative immunoenzymatic method for the determination of specific IgE antibodies in serum or plasma, that can be used as screening in case of suspected IgE-mediated allergy. The comparative analysis of results obtained with this new method and with standard methods for in vitro determination of specific IgE shows a perfect correspondence of the results for both sera with levels of specific IgE or non detectable levels of specific IgE.

E.U.E. cells (general population) were submitted to biochemical and cytoenzymatic tests to compare the enzymatic profile of E.U.E. cells (controls) with that of E.U.E. adapted to hypertonic medium. The adapted cells are characterized by very high oxoreductase activity (LDH, HBDH, G-6-P DH) and very high alkaline-phosphatase activity. Clones derived from general population were also submitted to biochemical tests to characterize those more strictly related to the enzymatic profile of adapted cells. The profile of clone N. 13 resembles on this respect that of the adapted cells. The high redox activity is a prerequisite supporting energy supply for osmotic work. The increased activity of plasma membrane enzymes of the adapted cells is also demonstrable in cells exposed for short time to salinity.
