RESUMEN
INTRODUCTION: Skilled preceptors are crucial to the pharmacy profession as they contribute to the growth and development of student pharmacists and resident pharmacists. As a result, providing education and further growth for preceptors is vital. The purpose of this survey was to determine preceptor development topics of interest and preferred platforms for receiving education. METHODS: A survey was conducted by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Section Advisory Group on Pharmacy Practice Experience Precepting. The survey was designed to identify preceptor needs based on experience and background. Professional development opportunities, tools needed to assist preceptors, and the preferred method of delivery were also determined. RESULTS: Two hundred seventy-two pharmacists completed the entire 30 question survey. On demand webinars were identified as the preferred method of education delivery. A preceptor tip of the week email was selected as the most favored type of online education resource for preceptors. There was no major difference on the types of online resources for students that preceptors would use. A survey to assist in self-identifying areas for developmental improvement was favored by 81% of respondents. CONCLUSIONS: This needs assessment identified that preceptor development materials are in high demand for all surveyed topic areas provided via live and/or on demand webinars or other virtual means. Accessibility of resources should be highlighted in multiple forums in order to ensure the information reaches all preceptors.

Academic tenure is a controversial and highly debated topic. Is tenure truly outdated or does it simply need to be reformed? On one hand, the tenure system has shortcomings including deincentivizing productive faculty members, inconsistent application of tenure policies and procedures, and the potential for discrimination during tenure decisions. On the other hand, the tenure system is a long held tradition in the academy, essential in higher education to ensure academic standards and values are upheld in the best interest of students. It provides faculty members with the academic freedom to try innovative teaching strategies and conduct research and assists with faculty retention and recruitment. Regardless of one's opinion, the tenure debate is not going away and warrants further discussion. This paper represents the work of a group of academic leaders participating in the 2014-2015 AACP Academic Leadership Fellowship Program. This work was presented as a debate at the 2015 AACP Interim Meeting in Austin, TX in February 2015.

OBJECTIVE: To review the pharmacology, microbiology, in vitro susceptibility, pharmacokinetics, clinical trial data, safety, and tolerability of iclaprim, a novel dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitor. DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search was conducted from 1966 through December 2008. Additional sources included abstracts from meetings of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and the Infectious Diseases Society of America from 2001 to 2008 and information available from the manufacturer's Web site. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: In vitro and clinical studies, in addition to Phase 1, 2, and 3 clinical trials, were included. DATA SYNTHESIS: Iclaprim, a novel diaminopyrimidine and DHFR antagonist, has a mechanism of action similar to that of trimethoprim. It has in vitro activity mainly against gram-positive organisms, including resistant Staphylococcus aureus. In Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials, oral and intravenous administration of iclaprim was effective and well tolerated for the treatment of complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSI). Trials are currently ongoing for the treatment of ventilator-associated and healthcare-associated pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: Iclaprim is a promising antimicrobial agent for the treatment of gram-positive organisms, including resistant S. aureus and trimethoprim-, macrolide-, fluoroquinolone-, and glycopeptide-resistant strains. Additionally, in vitro activity similar to that of trimethoprim has been observed against gram-negative and atypical organisms.
