RESUMEN

Candida albicans infections are widespread in people and cause cutaneous and systemic infections. Optimisation of garlic mustard oil macerate (GMM) based on antifungal activity against C. albicans was done using agar diffusion method. Upon vapour diffusion assay, the volatile organic compounds of both GMM and MO were found to eradicate C. albicans. During agar diffusion, MO did not inhibit fungal growth, while undiluted GMM oil demonstrated a 26.33 ± 0.33 mm zone of inhibition. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum fungicidal concentration against C. albicans were 12.5%, v/v of GMM oil and 25%, v/v of GMM oil, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed cell membrane disintegration of fungal cells by 50%, v/v of GMM oil, and MO caused no cell wall damage. In-silico analysis revealed strong binding affinity of sinigrin, ajoene, dithiin with N-myristoyltransferase. In conclusion, the optimised GMM preparation can be a potential antifungal agent against tropical C. albicans infections.

We construct an equivalent cellular automaton (CA) for a system of globally coupled sine circle maps with two populations and distinct values for intergroup and intragroup coupling. The phase diagram of the system shows that the coupled map lattice can exhibit chimera states with synchronized and spatiotemporally intermittent subgroups after evolution from random initial conditions in some parameter regimes, as well as to other kinds of solutions in other parameter regimes. The CA constructed by us reflects the global nature and the two population structure of the coupled map lattice and is able to reproduce the phase diagram accurately. The CA depends only on the total number of laminar and burst sites and shows a transition from co-existing deterministic and probabilistic behavior in the chimera region to fully probabilistic behavior at the phase boundaries. This identifies the characteristic signature of the transition of a cellular automaton to a chimera state. We also construct an evolution equation for the average number of laminar/burst sites from the CA, analyze its behavior and solutions, and correlate these with the behavior seen for the coupled map lattice. Our CA and methods of analysis can have relevance in wider contexts.

We study the existence and stability of splay states in the coupled sine circle map lattice system using analytic and numerical techniques. The splay states are observed for very low values of the nonlinearity parameter, i.e., for maps which deviate very slightly from the shift map case. We also observe that depending on the parameters of the system the splay state bifurcates to a mixed or chimera splay state consisting of a mixture of splay and synchronized states, together with kinks in the phases of some of the maps and then to a stable globally synchronized state. We show that these pure states and the mixed states are all temporally chaotic for our systems, and we explore the stability of these states to perturbations. Our studies may provide pointers to the behavior of systems in diverse application contexts such as Josephson junction arrays and chemical oscillations.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common non-melanoma skin cancer. The incidence of BCC is rising. The nodular, superficial spreading, and infiltrating variants are the three most commonly encountered types of BCC in descending order of prevalence. Superficial spreading basal cell carcinoma (SSBCC) accounts for 15-26% of all cases of BCC. It usually occurs on the trunk and upper extremities, but may be seen on the face. Surgical excision is the most commonly used treatment for BCC. Topical chemotherapy agents such as imiquimod or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) may be various alternatives or adjuvants in the treatment of SSBCC. characteristically shows areas of uninvolved skin between tumor nests.[7].

Darier's disease is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis resulting from ATP2A2 gene mutation. A 62-year-old male presented at our outpatient (OPD) with sudden-onset numerous dirty, warty papules over the head, neck, and back since 2 months. Histopathology of the skin lesions revealed acantholytic dyskeratosis suggestive of Darier's disease. He was referred to the gastroenterology department for some gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms where he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the stomach and was subsequently operated. On his next visit to our department for follow-up, we found a marked diminution of the skin lesions in the absence of any specific treatment. In view of the above finding, we concluded that paraneoplastic dermatosis in the form of Darier's disease occurred in this patient. Paraneoplastic Darier's disease with gastric adenocarcinoma is not yet described in dermatology literature and is hence reported here.

RESUMEN

Keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatum (KCM) is a rare variant of keratoacanthoma (KA). It is characterized by a progressive peripheral expansion and central healing leaving atrophic scar. It is sometimes confused with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) both clinically and histopathologically. We here report a case of KCM over the extensor aspect of the right forearm in a 57-year-old man with an abnormal looking scar.
